August, 2023, By The Numbers, Part 2: Biden's Incompetence, Old People In Congress, Dystopian Tours In San Francisco, and More

On a periodic basis we do some posts that fall under the theme of “by the numbers.” Rather than trust what the American political class tells us about reality, we like to examine the real numbers and the real reality in the world to understand what is actually going on. Relying on politicians, and their cohorts in the media, to tell us what is reality is always a sucker bet. They have their own agendas and goals, usually centering around their needs and self-enrichment. So we need to look at the reality of the numbers to determine what is really going on.

Previous analyses of “by the numbers” can be accessed by entering the phrase in the search box above. We look at the numbers to truly find out how good, not likely, or bad, most likely, the American political class is doing in managing our tax dollars, protecting our freedoms, and resolving major issues that affect all of us.

1)Biden’s economic policies have  pretty much been a disaster from Day One. The prices of everything are much higher than two short years ago with inflation at one point in Biden’’s term hitting 40 year highs.  Gas prices are still almost 100% higher than they were at the end of the Trump era. Americans have struggled economically because of his economic ignorance.

And now we learn that mortgage rates are also going through the roof:

  • The average long term mortgage rate in the country has risen to its highest level in more than 20 years.

  • The average hit 7.09%, up from 6.96% last week and up from 5.13% a year ago.

  • In  other words, from a mortgage perspective, things are getting worse under Biden, not better.

  • You have to go back to April, 2002 to get a mortgage this high, 7.13%.

  • Two years ago, as a remnant of the Trump administration, the average rate was 2.86%.

  • Thus, mortgage costs are now almost 2.5 times more expensive than when Biden came into office.

  • Not surprising, home sales are down  23% in the first six months of this year.

The numbers do not lie, Biden’s  economic policies are causing havoc on the housing market and related industries. And he created this havoc in just over two years, amazing incompetence.

2)As everyone knows by now, there have been devastating and fatal wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of Maui this past week. Fatalities are likely to be well  over the current death toll of 110. Such a sad, sad story.

But one number stands out in this disaster. A very, very basic function of any government is to protect the lives and property of the citizens it serves. But the Honolulu Star-Adveriser newspaper reported that when emergency services asked for water to be released to stop the wildfires early in their life, that request was delayed for many hours. That request was delayed by Deputy Director M.  Kaleo Manuel of the Hawaii Commission on Water Management:

  • The fire was contained at 9:00 am that fateful morning.

  • But to be prepared, a request was made to take stream water and move it into storage in case the fire kicked up again.

  • Manuel did not release the water until 6:00 pm.

  • By then the fire started raging again and firefighters had no water available to put them down.

Thus, the ineptness of a government official has likely killed well over 110 people.  Totally unprepared and incapable of doing the right thing at the right time and as a result, the numbers are horrific.

3)We have often discussed the reality that the San Francisco city politicians have allowed a once great city to digress into a cesspool of crime, violence, drug addiction, homelessness, and unhealthy quality of life given the public use of drug needles, and public defecation and urination. As a result, stores have closed, businesses have moved out of the city, and the downtown area has become a ghost town.

But an entrepreneur has come up with a unique way to make a profit off of the situation:

  • This person is advertising that for $30, he will take people on  “Doom Loop Walking Tour” to show those interested how far the city has deteriorated.

  • His claim:  “You’ve read the headlines. You’ve seen the Tweets, now get close and personal to the Doom and Squalor of downtown San Francisco. How can a city with a $14.6 billion annual budget be a model of urban decay? How can it spend $776.8 million per year on police and have no rule of law to show for it?”

$14.6 billion budget and the city clowns at town hall now reside over the death bones of a great city? Amazing.

4)In our opinion, the Biden administration has been a total failure regarding the war in Ukraine after the Russians invaded. Biden hasn't met with, or contacted the Russian leader Putin, to try and put pressure on him to negotiate an end to the warfare. Biden’s Secretary of State waited over a year to meet with the Russian foreign minister. Complete failures from a diplomatic perspective.

As a result of this diplomatic failure:

  • Sources estimate that the Russians have had almost 300,000 casualties in the war with possibly 120,000 of them being fatalities.

  • Ukraine has experienced almost 70,000 military killed and over 100,000 wounded.

And with no end in sight and no sign that Biden has the interest, ability, or courage to step up and stop the carnage, the deaths and wounded numbers will continue to climb to disgustingly high waar-realted numbers.

5)Above we expressed amazement at how quickly Biden has screwed up the economy. He has continued his ineptness from a voter perspective also:

  • A recent opinion poll shows that only 46% of Hispanic voters would back Biden in the 2024 Presidential campaign.

  • This is down from 63% in 2020.

  • Thus, in just over two and a half years Biden has lost about 27% worth of support from this major demographic segment.

His incompetence boggles the mind.

6)Apparently, 20 sitting members of Congress are over 80 years old. Now, I am not saying that being old should prevent someone from serving in Congress although the odds that someone that old still has full use of their faculties do go down by that age segment.

The bigger problem I have with these 80 years old is that most, if not all of them, have been serving in Congress since the 1990s or earlier. Thus, the old saying applies: if you are not part of the solution then you must be part of the problem. Being around for 30-40 years makes you part of the problem since obviously these folks have not succeeded in addressing the many issues facing the country today.

7)And last, but not least, a “By the Numbers” post is not complete unless we check in with the city of Chicago and see what the death and  wounded toll was over a recent weekend: 23 citizens shot with 3 Chicago residents dying from their gunshot wounds. Thus, even with a new mayor, the local political class continues to fail to protect the lives of its citizens. As of mid-August, 372 city residents had been killed by gun fire. The numbers do not lie.

As you can see, the numbers are not good: violent crime is up, inflation is up, mortgage rates are up, war fatalities are up, and political incompetence is up.

August, 2023, By The Numbers: Biden Drives Up Gas Prices, Biden Family Crime Family Dealings Uncovered, and Washington Continues to Explode the National Debt

1)Inflation and the cost of just about everything has risen dramatically since Biden’s economic policies took root. At one point, price inflation was running at 40 year highs. And while inflation has dropped down from that ridiculously high level, it is still running over 50% higher than what is normal.

And gas prices have not been immune to this economic insanity:
  • Keep in mind that when Biden came into office, the average national price of gas was around $2.00 a gallon.
  • The most recent survey of gas prices nationally found that they were at $3.83.
  • This was about 90% higher than when Biden took office, only about 2.5 years ago.
  • And somehow Biden is defying conventional economic knowledge since AAA says that less gas is being burned this summer season which would traditionally result in falling prices, given falling demand.
  • But Biden’s economic policies are so screwed up that lower demand somehow drove up gas prices.
  • And if you think that $3.83 is way too high for a gallon of gas, consider that the average price in California is a whopping $5.03 a gallon, Washington state’s average price is $4.99, and Oregon’s average price is $4.64.
All which proves two points:
  • Biden continues the Washington history of being economically ignorant when it comes to economic policy.
  • Why do we have a Federal Department of Energy when it has done nothing to make energy inexpensive in this country or make us energy independent?
The numbers do not lie, gas prices stink.

2)We could spend many days and many posts reviewing the financial and likely criminal corruption of the Biden crime family. Kickbacks, play to pay schemes, outright gifts from foreign entities, etc. The list of corruption activities gets longer everyday. Consider:
  • The House of Representatives Oversight Committee recently released bank records of multiple Biden family members.
  • These records show that these family members received more than $20 million just from Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.
  • According to the Committee: “In Spring 2014, a Ukrainian oligarch placed Archer and Biden on the Burisma board of directors and agreed to pay each of them $1 million per year. Then-Vice President Joe Biden visited Ukraine soon after they joined Burisma. Hunter claimed credit for this visit to show “value.””
Unbelievable the numbers that are coming out regarding the Biden family corruption. Makes you wonder what Biden had to give up from a United States government perspective in order to become millionaires over and over.

3)A former business partner of Hunter Biden, Devon Archer, recently produced sworn testimony in front of the House Oversight Committee that said a company controlled by Kenes Rakishev, a Kazakhstan oligarch, wired a large sum of money to a Hunter controlled bank account.

This was about the time that Rakishev had dinner with Archer, Hunter Biden, and then Vice president Joe Biden. The $142,300 that was wired was then sent to a car dealership which Hunter Biden used to buy himself a Porsche.

Rakishev is believed to be worth about $1 billion and is considered one of his country’s most important businessmen. He is also alleged to be a close friend of Ramzan Kadyrov, a Chechen warlord. These are the types of people around the world that Biden family members were receiving money from.

4)But others were also at this dinner mentioned in the previous point:
  • Also at the dinner was Yelena Baturina.
  • She is the former CEO of a huge Russian real estate company and wife of the late mayor of Moscow.
  • A bank account allegedly tied to her wired $3.5 million to a Hunter Biden associate account around the same time of the dinner.
$142,000 for a Porsche, $3.5 million from the Russians, and a massive diamond from a Chinese businessman that we had previously reported on, the corruption is unreal.

5)One thing that Washington politicians have never been able to do is operate a budget where costs are aligned with tax revenue. As a result:
  • The current Federal government national debt is around $32,000,000,000,000 or $32 trillion.
  • This comes out to just over $99,000 for every man, woman, and child in the country.
  • Thus, a family of four would have to write a check for just under $400,000 to theoretically cover their fair share of the debt, an impossibility.
  • And you cannot solve this debt issue by “taxing the rich,” a usual stupid solution some politicians propose, since consider: if you could somehow confiscate 100% of the assets of the country’s richest people and liquidate those assets to pay off the national debt you would account for only 1.6% of the debt.
  • And Biden continues to fund this disaster since the Federal government’s budget deficit for this year’s first ten months is more than 50% higher than the deficit vs last year, $1.7 trillion.
  • Thus, Biden has increased the Federal debt that has been accumulating for hundreds of years by over 5% in less than a full year.
  • For the first 10 months of this year, Federal government spending was up 10% while Federal government tax revenue was down 10%, a lethal financial situation.
  • According to The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget president Maya MacGuineas, the Federal government is now borrowing $5.3 billion per DAY to cover its expenses.
  • No wonder that the financial rating agency, Fitch, recently downgraded the Federal government’s credit rating.
Obviously, at some point the fiscal soundness of the Federal government is going to come crashing down unless drastic steps are taken SOON to reign in government spending.

You cannot keep spending more money than you have and assume you are not going to go bankrupt at some point in time. And when that happens at the Federal government level, you will see massive inflation that makes Biden’s inflation numbers look tame in comparison. The numbers do not lie: Biden’s inflation, Biden’s corruption, and a Federal government spending itself into oblivion.

August, 2023, Part 2, Political Class Insanity: California Continues To Depopulate, Massachusetts Politicians Have No Homeless Solution and More Kamala Harris Word Salad

Every month we devote posts to just general political class insanity that is running rampant through the country. The members of the American political class continue to show that they are incapable of operating any level of government in this country.

Even their best efforts are almost always inefficient and ineffective at resolving any problem facing Americans. They spend a great amount of time not trying to improve the lives of their citizens but continually ensuring their reelection and enriching themselves, their families, and their friends in the process, all at taxpayer expense.

1)A continuing saga in this blog has been the race to see which liberal controlled city and state will go bankrupt first. Our leading candidates for cities most likely to go bankrupt first include New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and long shots Seattle and Portland. The states we think are most likely to go bankrupt first include New York, Illinois, California, and New Jersey.

These cities and states are already in or about to enter a financial death spiral from which there is probably no escape:

  • Politicians in a city or state continue to spend and waste more and more taxpayer wealth which makes living in that city or state more and more expensive.

  • To protect their wealth, residents and businesses start moving out of those cities and states.

  • This reduces the tax base and tax revenue.

  • Rather than reduce government spending to match their reduced tax revenue streams, these politicians raise taxes to make up for the shortfall.

  • This increase in taxes forces more residents and businesses to leave these cities and states, further reducing the tax base and tax revenue stream.

  • Politicians get desperate and start cutting services such as police, fire, and EMT, to make up for the ever shrinking tax base, reducing the quality of life, driving more residents and businesses out and further reducing the tax base.

  • And thus, the financial death is now feeding on itself.

State-wise, recent analyses show that California is still barreling down this financial death spiral path:

  • A recent analysis of Internal Revenue Service data confirms that California and New York  lost the most in taxable income in 2021 because of out-migration to other states.

  • IRS data shows that California lost $340 million in tax revenue in 2021 from its tax base.

  • The study concluded that high personal  income tax rates and high cost of living were two main drivers in the lost taxable revenue.

  • The state had a net loss of 700,000 taxpayers between January, 2020 and July, 2022.

  • A whopping 5 million residents left which was offset by fewer people moving into the state.

  • The so-called 2022 U-Haul Growth Index showed that California ranked last in the country for one-way U-Haul rentals out of the state.

  • All this ended up costing the state a Congressional seat, the first time this ever happened, all because of a reduced state population.

  • Other reasons driving the out-migration besides high taxes and high cost of living include a massive homeless problem, skyrocketing crime, and drug abuse, reducing the quality of life issue referred to above.

  • Despite the high state taxes and personal tax rates, the state government will still likely have a massive $32 billion budget deficit in the coming year.

  • While California was losing $340 million in taxable income, states with no personal state income taxes, Florida and Texas, were respectively gaining taxable income in the same time period.

People want to be free and that desire for freedom includes the ability to keep as much of their hard earned wealth as possible. This principle never seems to get through to the politicians running these death spiral candidate cities and states.

Rather than adjust government spending downward to their reduced revenue stream, they just make the situation worse by thinking that raising taxes is the solution. Instead, raising taxes just accelerates the financial death spiral. Or as the authors of the study concluded: “Money goes where it is treated the best.”

2)We have often discussed the reality that Biden’s border security policies have been a fatal joke in so many ways:

  • Fentanyl and other illegal drugs are flooding over the border, killing more and more Americans every day from their addictions.

  • Other Americans are dying and being victimized by Central and South American gangs who have come across the border and set up criminal gangs throughout the country.

  • Illegal immigrants are dying in so many ways trying to get through Biden’s porous borders, dying in trucks smuggling them into the country, dying from hot weather conditions trying to get into the country dying at the hands of human and drug traffickers, dying in Mexican shelters from horrible living conditions, etc.

Not only are people dying but Americans are directly and indirectly suffering as a result of Biden’s failed policies:

  • Untold billions of dollars a year from American taxpayers are being used to house, feed, give medical attention to and give cell phones to.

  • These are billions of dollars that cannot be used to house, feed, and provide drug addiction support to America’s homeless, hungry, and drug addicted.

  •  Crime rates caused by illegal  immigration are skyrocketing across the country, bringing violence, robberies, rapes, and other crimes to Americans who would never have experienced these episodes if the border was secure.

  • Politicians of so-called “sanctuary cities” have boasted about their compassion for illegal immigrants for years but now that these same immigrants are flooding their cities and overwhelming their resources, these boastful politicians are no longer so boastful or full  of themselves.

In reality, these politicians talked big about being sanctuaries and now that you know what is hitting the fan, they are desperate to find easy ways, any way, to get out of the mess they created. And one state is  suggesting the unthinkable burden it want to place on its American citizens:

  • The state government of Massachusetts is recommending that state residents accept illegal immigrants into their homes.

  • The theory is that these in-home accommodations of undocumented, unvaccinated, and unverified illegal immigrants would be for only a short time frame until the Massachusetts politicians who caused this illegal immigration problem can figure out a solution.

  • Apparently, so many of these illegal immigrants have fled to Massachusetts, a self proclaimed sanctuary state, that the state political class was not prepared to handle what they boasted about.

  • The state government and  taxpayers are already paying 40 state hotels to house and feed the illegal immigrants in this sanctuary state.

  • The Boston Herald claims this will  cost the state’s taxpayers $11 million a year.

  • State Rep. Peter Durant understands that every dollar spent on illegal immigrants is a dollar that cannot be spent on the homeless, hungry, and drug addicted in the state, accusing Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey of having a “woefully incomplete” approach to the current situation: “This is about what we’re spending in taxpayers’ dollars to house, feed, secure those who are in the country illegally.”

With a sanctuary plan that is woefully incomplete, the state government and state politicians are hoping that state residents will take illegal immigrants into their homes, a ridiculous approach to a serious problem. No one in their right mind is going to endanger themselves and their families by allowing an illegal immigrant or illegal immigrant family to move into their home. The insanity of the idea is mind boggling but the fact that it was the best idea that the state politicians could come up with is not.

3)Almost daily Joe Biden goes in front of reporters or the cameras and makes a fool of himself. He often cannot read and/or operate a teleprompter many times and he just collapses into talking gibberish. And it appears that his Vice President, Kamala Harris, is not much better when trying to simply state a few words in front of the cameras.

Consider her “word salad” insanity when doing a press conference with the President of Mongolia of all people [my emphasis added]: “In particular, we will discuss the work that we will do together to strengthen our space cooperation. What that means, in terms of your leadership and your vision for the future, and certainly, strengthening our space cooperation would be a part of that agenda — including, of course, using our space cooperation to think about how we strengthen the economic prosperity and development of our nations.”

Anytime she tries to communicate anything she just ends up going in circles, repeating the same  phrase, in this case space exploration, over and over. I dare anyone to explain what point she is trying to make with the above paragraph.

The other obvious question to be asked, independent of another word salad episode from Harris, what possible space exploration upside is there going to come forth from partnering with Mongolia of all  places? Of all the problems facing the country today, illegal immigration, fentanyl pouring over the border in record numbers, human trafficking at the border, homelessness, inflation, etc. why is she wasting time with the head of Mongolia talking about space? Horrible priorities.

Enough insanity: wasting time on idiocy with the President of Mongolia, California continues to self-destruct, and Massachusetts expects its citizens to fix what its politicians broke.
