Every month for years we have dedicated a series of posts to the theme, “Political Class Insanity.” In those posts we talk about the greed, incompetence, stupidity, and often criminal behaviors of those today that make up the American political class. Their antics and failures never fail to provide more than enough information to fill up many posts.
Today’s discussion could have fallen into the classic ”Political Class Insanity” genre. However, we are going to slice today’s discussion away from that category since it focuses solely on illegal and immoral behaviors of a subset of today’s politicians, from the Federal government down to the local government level. These are the types of people that are making life altering decisions for us everyday and it is precovid,tty scary.
Note: Many of the politicians discussed today have only been arrested and charged with crimes. They are assumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
1)Senator Robert Menendez is a U.S. Senator from New Jersey, my original home state. I have followed his career in that capacity for a number of years and he has had some close calls when it comes to criminal prosecution:
He had been charged a number of years ago with accepting private plane flights, campaign contributions, and other bribes from a wealthy patron for which that patron received a number of alleged government-related favors.
However, a 2017 trial ended in a jury deadlock and he did not go to jail and, in fact, he continued to serve in the Senate.
There was a bribery case against him by prosecutors but that case was eventually dropped and he continued to serve in the Senate.
He was also criminally investigated back in 2006.
But quite possibly his luck may have run out:
Federal prosecutors recently charged him and his wife with bribery relative to their relationship with various businessmen.
They allegedly took thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange to enrich these businessmen and to benefit the government of Egypt.
The indictment included pictures of gold bars seized at the Senator’s home along with pictures of envelopes stuffed with cash found inside Menendez’s jackets hanging in his closet.
In total, they found $480,000 in cash hanging around inside the Senator’s home.
Prosecutors said that the Senator and his wife also received payments toward a home mortgage and a luxury vehicle.
According to U.S. Attorney, Damian Williams: "This investigation is very much ongoing. We are not done. And I want to encourage anyone with information to come forward and to come forward quickly."
Memendez and his wife each face three criminal charges: conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right.
Four others were included in the indictments.
We will not go into the details of how Menendez, his wife, the four alleged co-conspirators, and the Egyptian government were involved since the main point to be made here is that a sitting U.S. Senator may be guilty of a major bribery effort to use his government influence to illegally enrich himself and his family. If true, then truly despicable.
2)The next piece of political misbehaving is one that I don't think anyone saw coming or who believed could actually happen. If someone had proposed this escapade as a movie it would be rejected as being too far fetched:
Susanna Gibson is trying to get elected to a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates.
She is a 40 year old nurse practitioner and mother.
According to the Washington Post and other news reports, in order to fund her election campaign, she and her husband are live streaming sex acts to viewers in exchange for money.
They are active on a website called Chaturbate which defines itself as being associated with “the act of masturbating while chatting online,” as described by The Washington Post.
On this website, people could see Gibson and her husband engaged in various “intimate scenarios” which were sometimes interrupted by Gibson encouraging viewers to enter a “private room” where specific sex acts would be performed and viewed, assuming the users paid for the “honor” of viewing them.
Again, you cannot make this stuff up: campaign fundraising via online sex acts.
3)Bernie Sanders is a long time U.S. Senator from the state of Vermont. Sanders has made a name for himself by politically acting like a socialist/communist in his political ideology, always looking to tax the rich to feed the poor. But it appears that this all may be a giant piece of hypocrisy since Sanders allegedly has no problem enriching himself and his family, the poor and rich be damned:
Recent news reports allege that Sanders has moved $200,00 out of his campaign coffers.
If he was a true socialist.communist then in theory that money would have been donated to support the needs of the less fortunate.
But that is not the case since he is alleged to have moved that money to a non-profit institute that employs both his wife and son.
It is unclear what this non-profit does, if anything at all, with funds it collects.
Sanders has offered no comment or explanation on where the money is going or how it is being spent.
His son is paid a six figure salary for his work, or non-work, of the institute.
According to the Washington Post, the institute was established in 2017 to “promote progressive voices.” but suspended operations just two years later in 2019.
It resumed operations in 2021 but tax filings show a whopping 40% of its donations went to pay salaries and no discernible work or accomplishments were presented in the filings.
Must be nice to do very little work, have people give you money for your political career, and then you allegedly funnel that money to family members who pay themselves high salaries for doing basically nothing.
4)Let;s get back to another moral corruption matter of the American political class:
Patrick Wojahn is the former mayor of College Park, Maryland.
He recently pleaded guilty to a whopping 160 counts of child pornography possession and distribution.
He faces up to 30 years in prison.
According to the state's attorney general for the county of College Park, Aisha Braveboy: “This is a horrific case. I am truly pleased that Mr. Wojahn has [pleaded] guilty and accepted responsibility for his actions and these horrendous crimes. As a former elected official, the College Park community put its faith and support in him to serve each resident and their best interests. Instead, he let them down in a most disgraceful way.” \
Again, these are the types of people that make life impacting political and legislative decisions for us…when not exploiting kids, selling sex acts online for money, or enriching themselves and their families.
5)One more corrupt politician to wrap up today’s disgusting review of our nation’s political class behavior:
Michael DiMassa was, until recently, a member of the Connecticut General Assembly.
He recently resigned from the General Assembly after he was accused of stealing COVID relief funds.
The accusation says he took over $636,000 of COVID relief funds that should have gone to help the citizens of West Haven, Connecticut during the COVID crisis.
He and a partner allegedly formed a shell company that fraudulently billed the city via its “COVID-19 Grant Department” for consulting services that were never rendered.
Authorities allege that a lot of the $636,000+ money he got went to pay off his gambling debts at a state casino.
The list goes on and on: Menendez, Pelosi, the Biden crime family, the Clinton crime family, Sanders, and local and state politicians, the alleged financial and moral corruption and continuing self enrichment is disgusting.
