By the Numbers - Proof That California Politicians Care More About Illegal Immigrants Than Needy Californians

We occasionally do a post under the theme “by the numbers” where we take real world numbers to show how delusional and ignorant the American politician can be in the face of numbers that tell a different story that he or she is telling. Today we will return to this theme as it relates to illegal immigration. It has been our view that over the past two years since Trump was elected that many Democrats and liberals have cared more about illegal immigrants than needy Americans:

• They complained when illegal immigrant kids were temporarily separated from their illegal immigrant parents when they all tried to sneak into the U.S. but were hypocritically silent when Obama did the same thing.
• They raised issues when some illegal immigrants kids died while in custody but were silent when an average of two to three American kids die everyday from abuse. 
• They advocate for food stamps, free or subsidized housing and free medical care for illegal immigrants but are silent when the subject of millions of hungry, homeless, and drug addicted Americans is brought up.

Nowhere is this disregard for needy Americans but love for illegal immigrants more prevalent than in California. According to news reports, the California political class recently decided to fund free medical care for 90,000 illegal immigrants in that state. The free medical care would be focused on young adult illegal immigrants. Let’s look at the numbers:

• The cost to the American citizens living in California would be $98,000,000 a year.
• There are about 130,000 homeless Americans living in California.
• According to the Feeding America organization, the average cost per meal to feed a homeless American is $2.94 per meal.
• Thus, that $98,000,000 could get the 130,000 homeless American citizens in California 256 meals each.
• There are 15,000 homeless armed forces veterans in California which means that every homeless veteran could get three meals a day for $48,300,000, less than half of which is being spent on free medical care for 90,000 illegal immigrants.
• There are just over 3,000,000 illegal immigrants living in California which means that only 3% of illegal immigrants will be getting this free health care, hardly worth the effort, especially since the $98,000,000 will only be available to only young adults, those least likely to need medical care, leaving older illegal immigrants no better off.
• The average monthly cost of spending $98,000,000 to give 90,000 illegal immigrants free healthcare comes out to about $91 a month.
• But the average cost of an Obama Care bronze (the cheapest and worst) insurance policy in California is $296 a month, three times the cost of this handout to illegal immigrants so why do illegal immigrants get such a great deal while Americans have to pay three times as much for a bare bones insurance policy for themselves?
• There are about 30,400,000 adults living in California and 8%, about 2.4 million, are living with a substance abuse issue of some kind. 
• But only 10% of the 2.4 million are currently getting treatment support and help to deal with their addiction.
• According to the Drug Abuse government website (www.drugabuse.gov), an annual program of methadone treatment for opioid addiction, likely a big part of the 2.4 million Californians with a substance abuse problem, costs $6,522 a year.
• Thus, that $98,000,000 could treat 15,000 California opioid substance abusers for a year.
• According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, it would cost the city about $354 million a year to run a full homeless shelter system once the initial year investment of $657 million was spent. 
• Since there are about 59,000 homeless people in the city, that $98,000,000, if it was only spent in LA, could theoretically give about 28% ($98,000,000/$354,000,000) of LA’s homeless population, 16,000 homeless Americans, a roof over their heads in the city for a year.

You get the idea. California taxpayer citizens are going to have to pony up almost $100,000,000 a year to take care of 90,000 young illegal immigrants while millions of fellow California citizens continue to suffer with hunger, homelessness, and substance abuse problems. 

And what makes this plan even more obnoxious is that part of the $98,000,000 cost will be funded by fining middle class and poorer working California residents who cannot afford to purchase health insurance for themselves. As mentioned above the cost of an Obama Care cheap bronze health insurance policy is about $296 a month, $3,552 a year. This can be a significant, possibly unaffordable, household cost, a cost that is even higher for a full, better family policy. 

Thus, a working California family that may not be able to pay for its own health insurance coverage, and thus does not buy an insurance policy, will be assessed a fine by the political class in California to help pay for free medical care for illegal immigrants. How perverted is that logic and sense of fairness? 

As the above numbers show, our initial observation stated above is now proven: Democrats and liberals have cared more about illegal immigrants than needy Americans. The numbers never lie even if politicians do.
