A mix of political class insanity today: an Obama administration leader surprised that Obama Care failed despite his long ago assurances it would be great, another politician caught in a lie, and Seattle taxpayers get whacked for $30 million in a lost lawsuit.
1)David Axelrod was a big shot during the Obama administration. He was also a big advocate and pusher of Obama Care, bragging about how wonderful the legislation will be and how it will make health care wonderfully cheap and effective. But in previous posts in this blog we have reviewed how awful the Obama Care effort actually turned out to be:
Rather than reduce health care costs by $2,500 a year as Obama promised, health care costs on average increased 60% over the first four years after the law took effect.
Rather than "bend the curve” of health care’s increasing cost in this country, the cost curve got worse.
Rather than being able to keep your current doctor as Obama promised, millions of Americans lost access to their preferred doctors as a result of Obama Care.
Rather than being able to keep your health insurance policy as Obama promised, millions of Americans lost access to their preferred health insurance policy.
Recent Congressional debates have revolved around the reality that unless Obama Care subsidies are increased, millions of Obama Care policy holders will see large increases in their insurance premiums, something that Obama Care was supposed to avoid.
In the face of the above disasters of Obama Care, all of a sudden Axelrod acts surprised that it has been a failure, given a recent story he told: “Through family, I heard about a couple in WI who started a small business and were planning to expand. Now, with their ACA premiums TRIPLED due to congressional inaction, they’ve had to scrap plans to expand & grow. I’m sure that scenario is repeating itself all over the U.S.”
But Mr. Axelrod, Obama Care, the legislation you supported, was supposed to reduce insurance costs, not triple them. Obama Care was supposed to make life easier for businesses and people, not more complicated and expensive. Of course, many on the Internet had better response than my two observations:
“If only we could identify who wrote this law in the first place!
“So what you’re saying is the Affordable Care Act is not actually affordable? If only we knew who came up with this system….”
“You know you’re David Axelrod, right?”
“You and Obama lied about Obamacare. You destroyed Healthcare in this country.”
“That’s weird Mr. Axelrod, I don’t remember your concern back when the ACA was passed and I lost my insurance, the only doctors my kids knew, and the replacement Obamacare insurance was TRIPLE the price with TRIPLE the deductible. You hypocrite…”
“David Axelrod, 2026: People’s ACA premiums are tripling. David Axelrod, pushing the ACA in 2009: ”I have no doubt that once this bill is passed and implemented, the American people will appreciate it. It will improve the lives of people all across this country.”
Anyone with any sense of logic and common sense knew back in the day that Obama Care would fail along with every one of the promised advantages. America’s health care problems are health based: Americans smoke too much, Americans eat too much, Americans eat too much of the wrong kind of food, Americans do not exercise enough. It is a health care problem.
However, Axelrod, Obama and others in the cabal treated this health care problem as a problem that could be answered with an economic solution and approach: put in effect a massive economic subsidy program that does nothing to fix the underlying bad health situations listed above. A massive failure in problem solving and the lies of the politicians and operatives like Axelrod that accompanied Obama Care implementation.
2)And while the lying about the unfulfilled Obama Care benefits goes back to well over a decade, more current politician lies are illustrated by a recent, apparently fictitious story by the governor of Maryland:
The governor of Maryland, Wes Moore, an African American, recently asserted that his great grandfather was “run out of this country by the KuKLux Klan” while a preacher in South Carolina.
This occurred during an interview with Time magazine.
Horrible story of racism and oppression …. if true.
The Washington Free Beacon newspaper decided to check into the governor’s heartbreaking family tale.
When the paper investigated the historic records of the Protestant Episcopal Church down in South Carolina, they found a conflicting set of facts: “Detailed church archival records, as well as contemporary newspaper coverage, indicate that Thomas, a Jamaica native, on Dec. 13, 1924, made an orderly and public transfer from South Carolina to the island of his birth, where he was appointed to succeed a prominent Jamaican pastor who had died unexpectedly a week earlier, on Dec. 6, 1924. Amid the copious documentation of the life and career of Moore’s great-grandfather, there is no mention of trouble with the Klan, which operated openly in 1920s South Carolina but never had a chapter operating out of Pineville, according to Virginia Commonwealth University’s Mapping of the Second Ku Klux Klan.”
So, according to public records that the newspaper investigated, there was no Ku KLux Klan activity that drove the good preacher out of the country, he apparently left on his own to fulfill a vacancy out of the country.
Not surprisingly, when presented with this apparent conflict between public records and his story, the governor did what most Democratic politicians do, he played the deflection and reverse blame card (via a spokesperson): “We’re not going to litigate a family’s century old oral history with a partisan outlet.”
Translated another way: yes, you did catch me in a lie but I am now moving on before this lie really gets out of hand and I will blame you for being an unbiased news source.
Church records contradict him, newspapers from the time contradict him, university Klan tracking contradict him but it is the newspaper that is the problem. All of which gets us to the age-old question: do politicians lie because they think we are too stupid to not understand they are lying or do they actually believe the lies they tell?
3)As we have discussed so many times in this blog, a very, very basic responsibility of any government entity is to protect the lives and property of the voters they serve. If they cannot fulfill this basic requirement, then anything else they accomplish is worthless if basic safety cannot be provided. The city and taxpayers of Seattle just found out the hard way when a government fails in this basic responsibility
In 2020, amid the George Floyd riots, the city government and politicians of the city of Seattle allowed radical anarchists to take over a pretty big section of the center of the city (seven blocks), preventing police, fire, and EMTs from entering the barricaded area.
The occupied area was nicknamed the CHOP zone or the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest.
During the time that city politicians allowed this atrocity to go on, people inside the one were attacked, murdered, robbed, raped, and left to defend themselves.
Unfortunately, 16 year old Antonio Mays, Jr. was murdered inside the one during the occupation that city politicians allowed to exist.
Given this failure to protect the citizens it served, the city of Seattle recently lost a lawsuit filed by the family of Antonio Mays and will have to pay out $30.5 million.
He was shot by so-called “security” personnel that patrolled the zone and since ambulances were not allowed into the zone, while still alive, the boy’s body had to be carried out of the occupied area before he could be placed in any ambulance.
This delaying of treatment eventually killed him.
The jury ruled that the city was negligent in its emergency response responsibilities by allowing the occupied zone to exist without adequate police and medical coverage.
The mayor of the time, Jenny Durkan, was not only negligent but so out of touch with reality when she described the occupation as the “Summer of Love.”
However, subsequent testimony by former Seatlte Police Chief, Carmen best, said that rapes, robbereies and violent crime tripled during the time the zone was allowed to exist, hardly the “Summer Of Love.”
People die when the politicians do not do their job, especially when ones as out of touch with reality as Durkan are calling the shots.
That will do it for today’s political class insanity: Obama Care crashes and Axelrod acts surprised, the governor of Maryland gets caught in a major lie, and the bill finally comes due in the city of Seattle for the ineptness of its political class, costing the city and its taxpayers tens of millions of dollars.
