Part 2 - California Sinking

We have often argued the case that quite soon a major U.S. city or an entire state government will go bankrupt. The politicians running these entities have imposed heavy tax burdens on their citizens while allowing crime, homelessness, and other quality of life issues to become bigger and bigger problems.

As a result, businesses and residents abandon these cities and states in order to be safer and to  keep more of their wealth away from greedy government bureaucracies. This out migration reduces the tax base, increases the taxes of those that remain, driving more people out of the state, and the financial death spiral is in place.

The top cities likely to go bankrupt, in our minds, are Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City and Chicago. Top states with the chance to go bankrupt include California, Illinois, New York and New Jersey. All of these entities are facing massive budget shortfalls, crime, homelessness, and other problems and untold thousands of their citizens have been moving to other places, taking their tax dollars with them.

Depending on the latest and  lamest actions by their inept politicians, our views on which city and state will go bankrupt first changes month to month.  Last month we thought Chicago would go first given the heavy unfunded liabilities it is facing in the next too distant future. Before that we thought it might be New York City when even its mayor, Eric Adams, commented that the current situation in the city was unsustainable, given the burden of caring for almost 200,000 illegal immigrants.

But now, given the total incompetence of the political class in California, maybe that state and some of its dying cities deserve to be declared bankruptcy race leaders. While the state sinks further and further down the drain, the attitudes and actions of its politicians are inane and ineffective in providing good government and good quality of life for its citizens.

Example Number One - Homelessness is a big problem throughout California and especially in its biggest cities. Despite spending $54 billion to try and fix the problem since Gavin Newsom became the governor of the state, the problem just keeps getting larger and larger. Whatever they have tried has been a failure.

But their creativity, and ability to waste taxpayer money, never has any limits. Consider the latest lamebrained idea, you cannot make up this insanity:

  • The local politicians have decided that it would be a good idea to spend taxpayer money to build a new high rise building in Los Angeles for homeless people living on the streets of the city.

  • These new accommodations for the homeless population will include views of the LA skyline, a cafe, a gym, a soundproof music room,, a computer room, a library, a TV lounge, a TV in each apartment, a courtyard, and an art studio.

  • And best of all, the rent will be free or minimal for those that move into this taxpayer funded apartment building.

  • The building will have 19 stories, 278 apartments.

  • The total cost will be $165 million of taxpayer wealth.

  • And this will be the first of THREE similar high rises for the homeless population.

  • When all is said and done, the three buildings will serve about 700 homeless people.

So state politicians think it is a good idea for hard working taxpayers to be taxed up the gazoo to fund free or near free luxury apartments for homeless people. And can a plan be  more inefficient with taxpayer money: dividing the $165 million cost by 700 homeless people means that this program will spend almost $240,000 per person to shelter them.

And what is the motivation for these people to get their lives together and move out to a place of their own? Given all the amenities they will enjoy for free or minimal  rent, why try to get their lives back  together and leave the homeless population? Common sense is obviously a rarity with California politicians.

Example Number 2 - Of all the major problems facing the state of California and its residents, its politicians continue to waste time and resources on efforts that will make virtually no difference in the lives of the state’s residents:

  • State senator Scott Wiener is the brainchild of a piece of legislation called the Speeding and Fatality Emergency Reduction Package.

  • The objective is to require new cars with a speed governor that would restrict a car’s speed to no more than 10 miles over the speed limit.

  • His nebulous objective is to reduce the number of car fatalities on the roads of the state, higher than the national average.

High homelessness rate, secondary issue.  Higher and higher crime rate, secondary problem. High gas prices, high energy costs, high food costs/secondary issues. Let’s work on a stupid solution to a relatively minor problem. More insane priorities.

Example Number 3 - Even  when the state’s  politicians work hard at producing stupid laws and legislature, they often fail to even  get that right. About a decade ago, California became the first state to ban single use plastic bags, bags that many of us get everyday from supermarkets, drugstores and other retail locations.

However, almost ten years later, the New York Times, that newspaper outfit that loves liberal causes like banning single use plastic bags, reported that the program from that legislation is a complete failure. We will not go into the details of why this massive failure happened but let’s just look at how the New York Times summarized the results: “The unhappy results: last year, Californians threw away more plastic bags by weight than when the law first passed, according to figures from CalRecyle, California’s recycling agency.”

Yes, even when  they work on trivial issues they get it wrong and pass legislation that makes the given situation even worse.

Example Number 4 - Way too many times we have discussed the many problems facing the citizens of San Francisco:

  • Higher and higher crime rate.

  • Higher and  higher homelessness rate.

  • Higher and higher tax burden.

  • More and more retail stores are leaving the city due to retail theft and danger to employees and customers.

  • Filthy city streets covered with human defecation and urination and used drug needles.

No wonder we believe that San Francisco is a leading candidate to be the next major U.S. city to go bankrupt. The current mayor reinforced our belief:

  • London Breed is the current mayor of San  Francisco.

  • She is running for reelection and was recently involved in a debate with other candidates who want to become the next mayor of the city.

  • Rather than address the real issues listed above, she took time out of the debate time to ask one of her challengers to name three LGBTQ people on his staff and name three drag queens living in the city.

  • Specifically: “I’d like to ask Mark a question. You were at the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club and couldn’t name any LGBT advisers to your campaign. You were at the debate last week and couldn’t name any drag queens on your own. I was wondering if you could — this is an opportunity to redeem yourself. And if you could name three LGBTQ advisers for your campaign and three drag queens in San Francisco.”

Seriously, the city is going down the toilet and this is what she is focused on? Rather than treat every resident as a unique and equal individual, she, like most politicians, would rather play the bigot card, dividing the residents into different camps that can be exploited for personal political use.

No wonder no issue or problem ever gets resolved in the city and state. These folks have no idea how to fix what they broke so they focus on idiocy like playing the “Name That Drag Queen” game.

August, 2022, Part 5, Political Class Insanity: The CDC Cannot Count, San Francisco realizes Defunding the Police Was Stupid, and the New York Governor Is Stupid

Time to check in on the American political class and see what nonsense, idiocy, and other shenanigans they are up to:

1) Readers of this blog know that we have very little respect for most government functions and the politicians and bureaucrats that oversee their operation. The reason is very simple: these government functions almost always do their jobs ineffectively, inefficiency and waste a lot of time and taxpayer wealth in the process.

And apparently the Centers For Disease Control is no different:
  • Apparently the CDC updated its covid death statistics recently.
  • One would hope that the CDC knows how to count because a lot of their advice and statistics were responsible for shutting down the country and ruining lives, business, and well being of millions of Americans.
  • But their latest update indicated that they had included 72,277 deaths due to covid in their analyses but that those 72,000 plus deaths should not have been counted.
  • The reduction in deaths due to the disease impacted the covid death totals in 26 states and spanned all categories of Americans.
  • They attributed the massive over counting of covid deaths to a :coding logic error,” i.e. their computer program had not been properly vetted before put in use.
  • Children deaths due to covid were reduced significantly and now stands at just 1,341.
  • The CDC now says that while children accounted for 19% of all covid cases reported and tallied by the CDC, only a tiny one quarter of one percent of those afflicted by covid actually died from it.
  • Which raises the obvious and disturbing question: did we really have to shut down schools for months and months at a time, denying our kids an education when the childhood death toll from the disease was so so small? While most states had overstated their covid death totals, apparently New York state severely under counted its nursing home deaths from covid, by possibly as much as 50%.
  • Recall that then New York governor Andrew Cuomo ordered covid infected senior citizens to be shipped into nursing homes which resulted in a massive amount of nursing home deaths from those already infected interacting with healthy but vulnerable nursing home folks.
  • Thus, while the New York state government says 17,425 people died from covid in state nursing homes the real figure, caused by Cuomo’s fatal decision, was likely between 35,000 and 40,000.
General incompetence from the Federal government to state governments. The CDC did not count correctly because its computer systems were flawed, a situation that should have been discovered and fixed prior to any pandemic outbreak and the draconian restrictions that followed. That flaw probably unnecessarily impeded the education of our kids and unnecessarily disrupted the lives of millions of American families.

And in New York, ignorance or arrogance led to the under counting, or possibly cover up, due to Cuomo’s ignorant sheltering of healthy, vulnerable senior citizens with infected senior citizens. Failures all around.

2) Far too many times we have discussed the reality that the whole “defund the police” effort has been a huge and fatal failure. Fatal because the defunding and the disrespecting of police officers in many major cities has led to violent and rising crime waves that led to the unnecessary deaths of innocent residents of those cities.

We have always asserted that “defund the police'' was no more than a political slogan with no plan, no details, and no experience to support the slogan and ill fated movement. As a result, major cities across the country are dealing with soaring crime rates, rising homicide rates, early retirement for the beleaguered police force, and difficulty recruiting new police officers.

Finally, though, the same idiotic politicians that supported and acted on defunding their police forces, have now realzied that they made a huge mistake that has led to death and destruction in their cities. Consider one of the biggest perps in the defund the police movement:
  • A couple of years ago, San Francisco mayor, London Breed, took a whopping $120 million out of her city’s police budget and used the money to fund addiction treatment for black drug users in the city.
  • Specifically: “We will redirect $120 million from law enforcement to support these priorities over the next two years. Let me repeat that. This is $120 million.”
  • She actually sounded proud that she had gutted her own police force.
  • The year after she reduced the police force budget, the city experienced an annual 30% increase in homicides, a record.
  • A year later, the homicide rate went up another 17%.
  • In one city neighborhood, the Tenderloin district, violent crimes went up 121% from 2020 to 2021.
  • Finally, in December, 2021, the mayor submitted an emergency funding request to the city council to send more money to the police force budget.
  • She finally realized that her defunding the police effort was a huge mistake: “I’m proud this city believes in giving people second chances [but] we also need there to be accountability when someone does break the law. Our compassion cannot be mistaken for weakness or indifference…I was raised by my grandmother to believe in ‘tough love,’ in keeping your house in order, and we need that.”
  • As a result of the city government’s defunding the police hysteria, there are now 300 vacancies for city police officers after a whopping 50 resigned just in this past month alone.

Just like with covid, ineffective and stupid politicians and bureaucrats have endangered the lives and property of millions of Americans, an endangerment that has resulted in unnecessary death and destruction, a typical outcome of most efforts led by the American political class.

3) We have often discussed the real possibility that a major U.S. city or even a state government in this country is quite possibly already in a financial death spiral that will bankrupt that city or state. Cities most likely on the verge of financial collapse include Chicago (our best bet), New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and a few others.

States that we think will most likely soon enter into a financial death spiral include New York, Illinois, California, and New Jersey. This death spiral will likely unfold in the following manner:
  • High taxes drive out wealth generating and tax paying families and businesses.
  • This reduces the state government’s tax revenue stream that requires that government services be cut and taxes raised on the remaining families and businesses.
  • These increased taxes in turn drive out more tax paying families and businesses which results in more government service cutbacks, degrading the quality of life in the state, and more tax revenue shortfalls which causes more taxation and the death spiral is in place.
Once the financial death spiral starts it is very hard to reverse the trend. We have often discussed the reality that businesses and residents are fleeing high tax states like California, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois already. These states have lost Congressional seats recently because of their decreasing population and with that decreasing population their tax revenue streams are under stress. For example, according to moving companies, for every household moving into New Jersey, two households are moving out of the state.

Thus, one would hope that politicians in these cities and states would be smart enough to look at the numbers and realities and take steps to stop the out migration of families and businesses and the resulting loss of tax revenue. One would hope that is the case but apparently that is not the case in New York:
  • Current New York governor, Kathy Hochul, is running for reelection in the state in the fall.
  • She recently got her party’s nod as their candidate for governor.
  • As the current governor, you would expect that she would know the deteriorating condition of her state government’s finances and would be trying to at least maintain the current tax base of families and businesses.
  • But apparently that is not important to her as she recently announced that anyone in the state that disagrees with her policies, probably mostly Republicans (Hochul is a Democrat) should “Just jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong, OK? You are not New Yorkers.”
  • That is certainly not leadership, that is certainly not representing all of the residents of New York and is certainly not a way to stop the out migration of your tax base.
  • In the last year alone, over 45,000 New York residents moved to Florida to get away from the high taxation levels in the state and possibly the highly arrogant attitude of politicians like Hochul.
  • And it is highly likely that the majority of those 45,000 movers were productive and quite likely paying high levels of taxes to the state government since they had the means and desire to relocate their families a thousand miles away.
  • The state is expected to be short over $14 billion in tax revenue over the next five years so telling over 5 million of your taxpayers to jump on a bus and get out of town seems pretty stupid.
  • But the numbers and realities are worse than 45,000 residents going to Florida.
  • Over the past decade, 1;5 million New York residents have packed up and moved out of state.
  • Public opinion polls consistently show that high taxes are the primary reason while New Yorkers are leaving, be they Republicans, Democrats, liberals, conservatives, etc.
And taxes will just go higher and higher if Hochul’s arrogance and hatred drive millions of more taxpayers out of state, constantly accelerating a financial death spiral that is probably already underway in the state. Just pure stupidity to tell millions of taxpayers to leave your state if you dare to have a difference of opinion with her.

A true leader would look to get viewpoints from a wide variety of sources in order to make the right decisions for the most people they serve. Hochul is obviously not a true leader, she is just another political hack who cannot stand to have her opinion challenged, a trait that may make New York the first state government to go bankrupt, thanks to her “my way or the highway” approach to government.

So we have a politician telling her taxpayers to go away, we have a city finally realizing that defunding the police is a stupid move, and the CDC cannot count.

June, 2022, By The Numbers: Gas Prices Through The Roof, Federal Government Debt Through the Roof, and Homeless Idiocy In San Francisco Through The Roof

On a periodic basis we do some posts that fall under the theme of “by the numbers.” Rather than trust what the American political tells us about reality, we like to examine the real numbers and the real reality in the world to understand what is actually going on. Relying on politicians, and their cohorts in the media, to tell us what is reality is always a sucker bet. They have their own agendas and goals, usually centering around their needs and self-enrichment. So we need to look at the reality of the numbers to determine what is really going on.

Previous analyses of “by the numbers” can be accessed by entering the phrase in the search box above. This is the third and final post this month where we look at the numbers to truly find out how good, not likely, or bad, most likely, the American political class is doing in managing our tax dollars, protecting our freedoms, and resolving major issues that affect all of us.

1) We have often discussed the fatalistic budget and spending numbers of the Federal government. The Washington political class has run up a national debt that is now over $30 TRILLION. The Congressional Budget office estimates that in addition to this $30 trillion debt load, they predict that the amount of unfunded liabilities, future expenses that the government has no idea how to fund, mostly for future Social Security and Medicare expenses, is over $80 TRILLION.

Consider a few numbers and calculations:

  • In 2021, the IRS processed about 168 million tax returns from American citizens.

  • That means each American taxpayer would have to write a check for about $179,000 just to pay off the CURRENT national debt.

  • In reality, they would have  to pay more since every day the Federal government spends more money than it collects.

  • To pay off the $80 trillion in unfunded future liabilities, each American taxpayer would have to pay about $476,000 more in taxes.

  • Thus, to dig the Federal  government out of its debt hole that the Washington political establishment has created, every American taxpayer would have to lay out $655,000 to pay off the current debt and future unfunded liabilities.

Obviously, that math is not possible, American households have nowhere near that amount of wealth available to pay off the debt. Taxing businesses to pay off the debt and liabilities would also not be feasible since: 1) there is not enough taxable revenue in the American business world to cover that debt and 2) even if there was, for businesses to stay in business to pay that amount of taxes would require them to raise prices to astronomical heights creating runaway inflation.

Taxing the rich, a rallying cry of liberal politicians would not work  either. For example, in 2021, according to Forbes, Jeff Bezos of Amazon fame was the richest American with a net worth of about $200 million. If you confiscated, not taxed, his entire wealth then the $200 billion would pay off about .7% of the national debt and about ,25% of the unfunded liabilities. If you only taxed his wealth at say 2% of the total amount, an actual proposal by some liberal Washington politicians, then you would pay off about .01% of the current national debt .005% of the unfunded liabilities.

The bottom  line is that the amount of debt being run up by Washington politicians is unsustainable, not possible to be paid off, and will eventually crash our economy and our democracy if changes are not made to government spending.

All of this lead us to the latest, and horrible, numbers that were recently crunched by the Congressional Budget Office:

  • If nothing changes in Washington, the Congressional Budget Office predicts that the Federal government will be spending over $1 trillion every fiscal year for the foreseeable future beyond what it collects in taxes.

  • For the next decade, the annual government spending deficit will average $1.6 trillion.

  • This means that the Federal  government will on average spend $43 million a DAY that it cannot cover with current tax collections.

  • If nothing changes, the Congressional Budget Office predicts that the 2032 annual government spending deficit will be $2.3 trillion.

  • These deficits over the next ten years are projected to be worth 5.1% of the gross domestic product (GDP), the value of everything the entire U.S. economy produces.

  • Over the last 50 years, the annual federal deficit has averaged 3.5% of GDP.

  • These spending deficits are the largest in both actual and percentage of GDP that the Federal government has ever operated at.

  • The total national debt is projected by CBO to run near 100% of the country’s GDP every year, exceeding the record set by that metric during World War II.

  • The ratio of federal debt to GDP is more than double what it was in 2000.

You get the idea. The Federal government current and future debt is out of control and outrageously high, it cannot be covered with increased taxation, and current spending trends will make the debt situation that much worse over time. Eventually programs like Social Security and Medicare will be severely cut back in a last ditch attempt by the Federal government to avoid going bankrupt and defaulting on its debt obligations which will cause severe hardships for tens of millions of Americans.

The rest of the world will eventually lose trust in the value of the American dollar, which will contribute \to already skyrocketing inflation. And the current Washington politicians still do not understand the magnitude and depth of the problem as they continue to send money overseas, give their Federal employees free Peloton exercise subscriptions, shower themselves with benefits and high  salaries, and make sure their family members, friends and political  donors get rich while the country sinks into a sea of red ink. The numbers don't lie.

2) It is certainly no secret that gasoline prices in this country have risen to ridiculous heights since Biden became President. And while he wants us to believe that the Russian/Ukraine conflict is responsible for the gas price increase, that is a ridiculous lie to try to hoist on the American public. Gas prices started rising way before that war broke out.

In fact, gas prices started rising almost the same day that Biden took office. His killing off of the Keystone pipeline, his suspending drilling leases on Federal lands, etc., were his doing, not Putin’s doing or impacts from the Ukraine invasion.

There is a saying that a manager I once worked for had and managed by: “Don’t tell me the seas were rough, just tell me you brought the ship safely into port.” In other words, stop bitching and start acting to remedy the situation. Obviously, Biden had no clue how to execute that saying.  Rather than bring the ship into port and eliminate crushing gas prices, he sits around trying to place the blame on others without doing anything to fix the problem.

And it is a big problem and it has happened on his watch:

  • Gas prices in this country recently hit an all time high, the average price for a gallon of gas hitting $4.60 per gallon.

  • This average is about a ghastly 92% higher since Biden took office and I would bet that at least half of that increase happened BEFORE Putin invaded Ukraine.

  • Gas is $.44 more expensive than it was last month.

  • On  Memorial Day 2021, about a year ago, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.05 which was less than today but was still probably up 50% since the day Biden became President.

Again, if Biden was a leader he would spend less time telling us who is to blame and more time resolving the crisis, “bringing the ship safely into port,” and we all would be better off. But given that Biden was the VP in the Obama administration, an administration that spent eight years blaming everyone and everything else than themselves for their failures, his behavior is no surprise.

What is also very interesting is the numbers that occur at the state level for

average price for a gallon of gas:

  1. Arizona: $4.95 a gallon

  2. California: $6.15 a gallon

  3. Hawaii: $5.44 a gallon

  4. Illinois: $5.00 a gallon

  5. Maine: $4.77 a gallon

  6. Nevada: $5.30 a gallon

  7. New York: $4.93 a gallon

  8. Oregon: $5.20 a gallon

  9. Washington: $5.23 a gallon

These states currently have the highest priced gas in the country. I find it interesting that states with the highest gas prices are those states that have a long tradition of being run by liberal politicians/Democrats: Washington, Oregon, New York, Maine, Illinois, Hawaii, and California.

I  would bet on a closer look that these states also have the highest state gas taxes in the country, a double whammy on those residents in those states: high taxes on everything else, property, sales, , etc., and also gas taxes which makes the gas burden that much worse in those political blue states.

Bad times for Americans’ transportation needs and an administration  and President that are clueless on how to resolve it even though two short years ago this was not even close to being a crisis for American drivers.

3) I debated whether to put the following piece of political idiocy in this “by the numbers” post or save it for our next “political class insanity" post. I decided to go with it here since the single number it has is really a doozy:

  • London Breed is the mayor of San Francisco.

  • Her city has a tremendous homeless problem which manifests itself in public defecation, public urination, public use of illegal drugs, drug overdoses, violence, etc.

  • Her solution: spend an additional $6.5 million over five years to remedy the situation or at least alleviate it to some degree.

  • The problem: she wants the money to only alleviate homelessness of transgender people.

  • Forget helping the homeless elderly who cannot find a place to live because of Biden’s inflationary policies.

  • Forget the homeless veterans who may be suffering any number of maladies from their service and combat experiences.

  • Forget the families who may be homeless because the breadwinner lost his or her job.

  • Nope, Breed wants to spend the money only on transgender homeless people, which number only about 400, in a city with thousands and thousands of homeless people.

  • Specifically: "Transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming San Franciscans are eighteen times more likely to experience homelessness compared to the general population, and we know that the rates are even higher for our minority trans communities. With one of the largest TGNC populations in the country, we not only must ensure that all San Franciscans have access to housing and essential resources through continued investments, but we can show the country that we continue to be a leader on supporting and protecting our trans communities."

$6.5 million for only a certain type of citizen. Any number of problems wrong with this stupidity:

  • First off, it is probably illegal to use taxpayer money for only a certain segment of the population.

  • This approach is so easy to game,  anyone could claim they are transgender to get a peice of the $6.5 million, it is not as if you can say a transgender person has a certain skin color, a certain ethnic background, a certain DNA, a person would just be able to claim their are transgender.

  • If you do the math of $6.5 million over 5 years to serve only 400 people, it turns out that the city will theoretically be spending about $9 a day to help a homeless transgender person.

  • I doubt you can feed and shelter a person for $9 a day, about $270 a month in a high priced city like San Francisco and that assumes the $6.5 million goes directly to the homeless transgender people.

  • Once you take overhead costs out of the the $6.5 million along with government incompetence and fraud, that $9 a day goes down dramatically.

I have no idea how to handle the large and growing homeless problem in this country. But I am pretty sure helping one a small minority of those that are homeless, whatever the criteria is, does not resolve the bigger problem affecting people of all sexual orientations, genders, education backgrounds, etc. Another stupid government program as proven by some simple numbers.

Stupid spending in San Francisco, stupid and overwhelming debt driven spending in D.C., and the inability to manage an inflationary economy by Biden. The numbers don't lie even if politicians do.
