January, 2023, Part 1, Political Class Insanity: Another Defunding The Police Disaster, More Congressional Insider Trading, and More Foreign Aid While Americans Suffer

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

1)As we have discussed, there are a lot of suffering Americans in the country today:

  • At any one time there are anywhere from 500,000 to 600,000 homeless Americans roaming the streets of the country.

  • In  this time of high inflation, there are millions of American families struggling to feed their families.

  • The death rate from drug addiction is skyrocketing in this country as Biden has opened the southern border and allowed a flood of cheap fentanyl to come into the country.

And  yet despite the suffering, and deaths, of millions of Americans, where has Waashington decided to send billions of tax dollars? To Africa to combat climate change:

  • The Biden administration is sending $8 billion to Africa to encourage those countries to shut down their coal burning plants.

  • Even  if you think that man-made climate change is a real thing, wouldn't it be a  kinder, more humane use of $8 billion to shelter, feed, and provide drug addiction treatment for Americans in need today instead of wasting money on a problem that may or may not exist decades in the future?

  • That $8 billion could provide about 2.7 billion meals to hungry Amerians, or about  4500 meals for the current homeless population in the country, or three meals a day for that population for about four years, certainly a better, more humane, and more immediate benefit than sending $8 billion overseas chasing climate change.

Oh, by the way, that $8 billion pales when  you consider that the Biden administration has already sent $68 billion to Ukraine in their battle against the invading Russians. That $68 billion could feed, shelter, and treat a lot of suffering Americans.

2)We have talked about how the inane “defunding the police” effort has resulted in skyrocketing crime and violence in major U.S. cities such as NYC,  Chicago, San Francisco, and elsewhere. But it is not just big cities where this stupidity has resulted in increased crime:

  • Burlington is the biggest city in Vermont even though it only has about 44,000 residents, a fraction of the population of other big cities.

  • Over the past few years, the politicians in the city decided, incorrectly, that defunding their police force was a good idea.

  • Now, the crime rate in the city is at its highest rate in about 60 years.

  • And within that escalating crime wave is a rising rate of murders.

  • The crime statistics include five murders and 18 other non-fatal  shootings, which is a lot for a city with only 44,000 residents.

  • In 2020, the city’s politicians cut the funding for the city’s police force by about 30%, going from 105 police officers to 74.

  • The funding taken away from law enforcement went into so-called “racial justice” programs.

  • Obviously, those programs are not working if the crime rate has reached a 60 year high.

  • But this should  not be a surprise since the police force warned that such a drastic cut would result in increased crime but the city politicians did not listen and the residents of the city are paying the price.

We have  often pointed out that a basic, fundamental function of any government entity is to protect the lives and property of the citizens it is responsible for. Obviously, the politicians in Burlington are falling down on executing that basic government function.

3)The STOCK Act, passed by Congress a number of years ago was supposed to punish Congressional members and their staff members who indulge in insider trading. Obviously, people in Washington get access to all sorts of secret, undisclosed information that is invaluable from a personal investing perspective.

The STOCK was supposed to stop such insider trading, actions that get ordinary, and famous people like Martha Stewart, thrown in jail. But after the act was passed, with much fanfare, Congress eventually gutted the consequences of such actions. This allowed Washington insiders to commence insider trading activities with very little financial penalty, or jail time, if they got caught. In other words, the upside financial gain by insiders far outweighed the consequences if they got caught.

As an example:

  • A recent  analysis by the Insider news publication found that at least 77 members of Congress failed to report their financial trades and transactions as required by the STOCK Act.

  • This is about 15% of the sitting members of Congress and does not include those additional members that did not get caught.

  • Excuses by Washington politicians  for not complying with the law would make a fourth grader proud including clerical errors, accounting mistakes, and some even claiming they were not aware of the law.

  • Obviously, if the IRS was investigating us for insider trading, none of those excuses would keep us out of jail.

  • These 77 members of Congress could face fines totaling hundreds of dollars while their insider trading may have gotten many times more than this puny fine process.

  • After ten years, not a single member of Congress has faced any serious ramifications from their obviously illegal stock and insider trading deeds.

One of the very few things that American politicians do well is that old saying: “Do as I say, not as I  do.” And that trait has made many, many members of Congress, very, very rich.

That will do it for today: the  hypocrisy of Washington insider trading, sending billions of our tax dollars overseas while millions of Americans suffer, and another example why defunding the police was a stupid idea from day one.

March, 2022, Part 3, Political Class Insanity: Possible Insider Trading By A Senator,Possible Criminal Activity By A President's Son, And Possible Dementia In The White House

1) Far too many times we have discussed the reality that the only process that Washington politicians seem to do efficiently and effectively is self enrichment. Seems every month some politician is trading on insider information, delaying or changing legislation to make themselves richer, using taxpayer money and resources to enrich their families, etc.

Another Senator may have been the latest Washington politician to ignore ethics and laws:

  • Richard Blumenthal is a Senator from Connecticut.

  • Robinhood is a brokerage firm that fed the stock trading frenzy in certain company stocks, e.g. GameShop.

  • The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) has called for an ethics investigation into the good Senator who 1)  apparently bought shares of Robinhood, worth up to $2.5 million, but did not disclose the purchase within 45 days as required by law and 2) purchased the stock at the same time the company was under intense review by the Federal government.

  • According to Kendra Arnold of FACT: "Blumenthal's stock trades raise conflict of interest concerns, and to make matters worse, Blumenthal failed to disclose his trades as required by the very laws intended to reveal conflicts of interest.”

  • While Blumenthal publicly joined other members of Congress to investigate the Robinhood trading frenzy, as chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection,  he did not launch any investigation into Robinhood despite his powerful position on this matter.

  • Blumenthal has denied any wrongdoing because he was not aware of the stock trades in Robinhood since it was done via a trust controlled by his wife’s family.

  • He did not deny that he violated the STOCK act’s stock trading deadlines

He is obviously innocent until proven guilty. But why does it seem that more and more politicians continue to seem to violate the STOCK Act while they continue to actively trade stocks during their time in Congress? Could it be that the ability to make thousands or millions of dollars on Congressional insider trading information far outweighs the hundreds of dollars in fines they may get hit with if they get caught?

2) One of the most embarrassing aspects of the current Biden administration is the unethical and possibly criminal self enrichment activities of his son, Hunter. From Ukraine, to Moscow, to Communist China, Hunter has pranced around the world, trading on his father’s high position in our government to make himself wealthy with very little effort.

And it now looks like the Secret Service might be facilitating his unethical activities:

  • A Congressional investigation into Hunter’s business dealings has encountered some roadblocks by the Secret Service.

  • When Congressional staffers asked the Secret Service for three years worth of Hunter Biden's travel records, they were told that those records were “missing.”

  • The Secret Service had many years of Hunter's travel records but “lost” the records from the years 2020, 2011, and 2013.

  • Specifically: “In October 2020, the Secret Service worked extensively with your committees and agreed to search parameters provided by your offices to identify communications regarding Mr. Biden’s travel. These search parameters did not yield communications for the years 2010, 2011, or 2013."

  • These investigations are important especially given the war Russia has started with Ukraine, two countries that helped make Hunter rich, and that a former business partner of his has been found guilty of bilking the poorest Indian tribe in the country out of $60 million.

They could find some of the records but not all of the records? Seriously, we are to believe this ridiculous excuse for covering up Hunter Biden’s worldwide travels, across five continents, and the deals and influence that was thrown his way? The corruption of a politician's family members is as bad as the corruption of the politicians themselves.

3) Speaking of Biden, first consider some realities facing the country, its citizens, and the rest of the world:

  • There is a genocide going on in Europe as Russia and invaded Ukraine and civilians are being targeted and killed and over 2 million Ukranians have been turned into refugees.

  • In this country, inflation is at a four decade high as food, gas, and utility prices go through the roof.

  • The southern border is still an open door for drug smugglers, potential terrorists, human traffickers, criminal gangs, and who knows what else.

  • On a random day in America, 500,000 - 600,000 Americans are homeless, millions are not sure where their next meal might come from, and a couple of hundred probably died from a drug overdose before they could receive drug addiction treatment.

  • Urban crime is going sky high, particularly in Democratically controlled cities, who thought the idiotic “defund the police” concept was actually a good idea.

The country is facing real problems that require real leadership and vision. And many times leadership involves the right type of optics to at least give people hope that the problems they face are being addressed even if not getting resolved.

But what has Biden been doing over the past 13 months? He has spent over 35 weekends, over a 100 days not in Washington, at least looking like he is working to solve our problems, but flying home to Delaware to either of his two homes in that state. Given that a year has 52 weeks, Biden is spending about 70% of his weekends away from the office. Really, really bad optics.

Maternity wards are being bombed in the Ukraine and he is at his beach house or manor in Delaware. The drug overdose issue in this country will likely set another record for deaths and he is at his beach house or manor in Delaware. Gas prices are killing poor and middle class families and he is at his beach house or manor in Delaware.

If Trump or Bush had spent this much time on vacation, Democrats and the mainstream media would be beside themselves with indignation on how bad the optics were. A Democrat does it and nothing. Disgusting behavior all around but  especially from Biden who looks clueless when he actually is in Washington and out of touch with reality the many, many times he is not in Washington.

There is possibly a bigger issue at work here also, given his need to always go home. According to the Alzheimer’s Project website, Persons with dementia thrive on familiarity. Familiarity is important because dementia gradually impairs a person's ability to plan, initiate, and complete an activity. By creating an environment of familiar routines and activities, it allows them to feel comforted and calm.”

I am certainly not a doctor or an expert on dementia. However, I did care for an elderly, dementia afflicted uncle for a number of years and one of his constant complaints was his desire to leave the dementia assisted living facility where he was constantly requesting that he  “just be allowed to  go home.” Biden has exhibited other symptoms of dementia and this is one that continues to manifest itself almost every weekend, his need to get home and into familiar surroundings. This is the leader of the free world, very scary, very scary.

That will do it for today: a possible insider trading scandal and law breaking of a sitting U.S. Senators, a possible cover up by the Secret Service for the potential criminal activities of a President’s son, and a President who has possibly the worst leadership optics ever, a possible result of a possible dementia affliction.

January, 2022, Part 9, Political Class Insanity: Self Enrichment Now More Important Than Integrity In Washington

1) It is no secret that most Washington politicians are much wealthier after their term in office vs. when they enter public office. And that increase in wealth cannot be explained by their salaries alone. Not even close

One of the best Washington politicians at self enrichment appears to be Nancy Pelosi. As we have previously discussed, she made about a half a million dollar killing when the VISA credit card business went public. She made sure her husband’s company was included and well rewarded with covid relief money even though their family is worth tens of millions of dollars.

And her greed may be getting worse:
  • Some Washington sources are calling for an investigation of Nancy Pelosi’s family insider stock trading.
  • The trigger for this interest is that she and her family may have earned up to $30 million on insider stock trades.
  • At the same time, she has arrogantly said she opposes any efforts to ban lawmakers from trading stocks while in office.
  • The majority of these earnings have come from high tech companies such as Apple, Google, etc., companies that Pelosi has been slow to act on their potential antitrust violations.
  • A Congressional aide summed up the problem quite nicely: “The optics are terrible for her, for the party, and for Congress. And it raises serious questions anytime she takes actions or doesn’t act on issues relating to holding these companies accountable.”
  • Furthermore, “Sure, it’s a free-market economy, but your average schmuck doesn’t get confidential briefings from government experts chock full of nonpublic information directly related to the price of stocks,” argues Walter Shaub, former director of the US Office of Government Ethics.
  • Her office puts forth the stupid argument that Pelosi is not doing insider trading since all of the stock earnings were done by her husband, not her.
  • And while she, as Speaker of the House, can significantly affect legislation and has the most access to insider information, over 50 members of Congress are also likely in violation of the STOCK which was supposed to prevent insider trading by members of Congress.
  • The problem is that these people, especially Pelosi, are making millions of dollars because of their positions while the fine for violations of the STOCK Act is only $200 and thus, the downside of violating the STOCK Act is minimal vs. the high upside.
  • Blake Masters, a candidate running for the Senate from Arizona, gives a nice summary of how disgusting this practice is: “These lawmakers are just out of touch with how normal people view the situation. Members of Congress should not be buying call options on Big Tech companies they’re in charge of regulating, that is ludicrous.”
And while members of Congress are so busy enriching themselves, millions of Americans are going hungry, going homeless, and need drug addiction support and they are a secondary, if any, priority of the American political class.

2) But it it not just members of Congress and their staffs that are guilty of insider trading and self enrichment:
  • Secretary of Energy, Jennfer Granholm, failed to report, as required by the STOCK law, a load of stock transactions she made over the past year or so.
  • She may have been guilty of nine violations just in 2021 according to a Biden administration report.
  • Apparently, she failed to report these transactions within 45 days of the transaction as required.
  • She ludicrously claimed that it was not her fault, that “clerical errors” were involved: “This was an inadvertent clerical oversight on reporting stock sales that ethics officials previously determined did not pose a conflict in her role as Energy Secretary and the Secretary paid the late filing fee,” an Energy Department spokeswoman said of Granholm’s transactions.
Seriously, she violates a Federal law and gets away with this “clerical error” excuse? I wonder if the IRS would accept a “clerical error” excuse if they were to audit our tax returns? I doubt it, which illustrates just another situation where the political class gets to do what they want to do but we, the common folk, are subjected to the various rules and laws that they enact and then ignore.

3)  continue along the theme of crooked and corrupt people in Washington DC:
  • Marie Newman is currently a Congresswoman from Illinois
  • Recently the House of Representatives Ethics Office reported that there is “substantial reason to believe “ that the Congresswoman violated Federal law by bribing a potential political opponent not to run against her in the primary.
  • It accuses Newman of likely promising a Congressional job to her potential primary opponent, Lymen Chehade, if he stayed out of the primary and supported her candidacy for Congress.
  • Newman denied early reports that this was the case, claiming that she had no idea Chehade was planning to run against her.
  • But emails were eventually uncovered that showed Newman had indeed had direct communication with Chehade where they discussed having him not run against her in the primary in exchange for a $140,000 a year Congressional job that would have little responsibilities and supervision and that Newman would endorse him for Congress once she decide to leave her Congressional seat.
  • According to the Ethics Office, Newman and Chehade actually signed a document with these terms of agreement, a document she then refused to honor after she got elected.
  • This refusal resulted in Chehade suing the Congresswoman for breach of contract.
What a mess and a potentially serious violation of Federal law. Not to mention the alleged breach of contract, lying to investigators, bribery, and using taxpayer money to bribe someone with a high paying, nonsensical job.

So much for those in Washington being honest, high in integrity, and hard working individuals, looking out for the good of Americans everywhere. More and more it seems these people are only in the business for self enrichment with no or little chance of ever being held accountable for their actions. Disgusting.

January, 2022, Part 2,Political Class Insanity: People Flee Blue States, Congress Continues to Self Enrich Themselves and Will California Ever Be Safe Again?

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

1)In our last post we discussed the reality that New York residents are fleeing that state faster than the net out-migration rate of every other state. No surprise given that New York has some of the highest taxes, most overbearing regulations, high crime rates, and totally ineffective politicians.

Our premise in that post is that people want to be free to run their lives as they see fit with minimal government interference, want to keep as much of their hard earned income as possible to have more freedom in their life decisions, and have their taxes used to benefit their lives, not the lives and pocketbooks of politicians.

A few years ago we hypothesized what state would go bankrupt first and New York, along with California, New Jersey, and Illinois, were the top contenders for going belly up financially. All of these states have overspent their revenue streams, rolling up huge unfunded future liabilities, have taxed the state businesses and residents to death, their out of control government spending has not been used efficiently to improve the lives of the taxpayers, and as a result state residents and businesses are leaving the state for better quality of life situations.

As more and more taxpayers and businesses leave the state, the tax  revenue stream shrinks which requires more taxation which results in more exits from  the state which reduces tax revenue and a financial death spiral is put in motion.

The latest Census data confirms that these death spirals are indeed taking place right now:

  • California showed the largest, absolute negative total population change from 2020 to 2021, a little over 367,000.

  • New York had the second largest negative population change while Illinois had the third worst negative population change.

  • New Jersey was also way down there with these states although not as bad from a rate of negative population growth.

  • Meanwhile, states with little or not state income tax laws, lower overall taxes, smaller government spending totals, and less government regulations saw some substantial population gains, over 1.00% population growth in a single year.

  • These growth states included Texas, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, South Carolina, Utah and Delaware.

  • Florida, another state without a state income tax burden, also grew substantially but not quite as fast as these states from a growth rate perspective.

The bottom line is people want to be free: free to spend their money as they want, not taxed to death, free to not worry about being a victim of violent crime, free to live their lives as they please with minimal government regulations. And they are showing their desire to be free by moving their families, themselves, and their businesses to those states which accommodate freedom.

Meanwhile, politicians in the states left behind in the population growth and freedom race are now dealing with what will eventually be the financial death spiral of their states. And that will not be pretty. But the voters in those states have no one to blame but themselves, they voted in the inept politicians who drove their states into the ground. Elections have consequences and we are about to see some huge, negative consequences in places like California, New York, Illinois and New Jersey. The population numbers don't lie.

2)  There are some very strict stock trading laws on the books in this country. These laws are designed so that so-called “insiders” in a business who have special, secret information, do not unfairly gain financial advantage by using that information to trade stocks and bonds to their favor. Failure to adhere to these so-called insider trading laws can result in fines and prison time. Marthat Stewart is one of the most famous citizens to be convicted of insider trading, serving prison for her actions.

But apparently, insider trading violations only apply to regular U.S. citizens. If you are a member of Congress, and have access to secret government, legislative, and business information, you are free to use that information for self enrichment without danger of being subjected to the same insider trading laws that the rest of us have to obey:

  • During the Obama administration back in 2012, legislation was enacted called the Stock Act, Stop Trading on Congressional knowledge.

  • This law was passed at a time when it became known that members of Congress were getting quite rich trading stock based on secret government information that only they had access to.

  • The original legislation was passed with overwhelming Congressional support, passing by a vote of 417 to 2 in the House and 96 to 3 in the Senate.

  • Great idea but subtly, a little time after this act a was passed, additional legislation was passed that considerably weakened the penalties that were originally included in the first passage of the law.

  • The law was weakened so much that the penalties/fines if you got caught doing trading on inside government information was minimal compared to the potential wealth upside that could be garner on secret government information.

  • Which is exactly what happened since recent news reports found that at least 14 members of Congress and at least 182 Congressional staff members have indeed violated the Stock Act’s provisions.

  • The Congressional violators come from both parties and both Houses of Congress and include Pat Fallon (R-Texas),  Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), Dan Meuser (R-Pa.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.),  Blake Moore (R-Utah),  Kim Schrier (D-Wash.), Lance Gooden (R-Texas),  Susie Lee (D-Nev.), Diana Harshbarger (R-Tenn.), Tom Malinowski (D-N.J.), Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.), and Chris Jacobs (R-N.Y.).

  • These members of Congress failed to properly report their stock and financial activities as required by law.

  • And these are not some small slip ups, e.g. Pat Fallon violated the Stock Act at least 100 times and Tom Suozzi may have violated it over 300 times.

  • But the problem is despite these hundreds of violations, the penalties they may end up paying are likely to be minimal, hundreds of dollars, relative to whatever self enrichment they experienced.

As always with the American political class, it is “do as I say, not as I do.” Maybe if these folks did less self enrichment and spent more time on the problems facing their constituents we would not have skyrocketing gas and food prices, a supply chain fiasco, a Federal government debt issue, and millions of homeless, hungry and drug addicted Americans in need.

3)Unfortunately, we have had to return to this topic way too many times in just the past year or so. It is always our contention that a very, very basic function of any government entity is to protect the lives and property of its citizens. No matter how successful a government entity is in other areas, if it cannot protect its citizens then it is a failure.

Consider the following opinion from an LA Times article by Ayaan Ari Ali:

  • The title of his article is, “Will  California Ever be Safe?

  • This is obviously written in light of the reality that there have been astronomical rises in crime rates across the entire state.

  • Things have gotten so bad that a representative of the LAPD union organization has publicly told people not to visit the city, that they cannot be protected by local law enforcement.

  • She starts off her article with the following dose of reality: “In my home state of California, smash-and-grab is fast becoming a way of life. Crime is a rampant, daily occurrence. Just this week, two of my close friends were robbed near San Francisco. One owns a popular restaurant; the front door was destroyed, and the cash register robbed. The other was renting a car, the entire rear window of which was smashed to bits and the contents swiped. So common is this sort of looting and thievery that when he returned the rental car, he noticed that the car company’s lot was full of vehicles with broken windows.”

  • She goes on to discuss the rampant attacks on retail stores throughout the state.

  • These stores include Apple, CVS, Louis Vuitton, and Burberry.

  • $40,000 was stolen from a Lululemon store and a criminal gang of at least 80 people descended on a Nordstrom store to ransack that store.

  • All of this has resulted in law abiding citizens needing to change their behaviors in order to not become victims by not going out alone after dark, keeping their car doors and trunks unlocked so that would-be robbers would see there is nothing to steal, installing fences and alarms, etc.

  • Businesses are boarding up their windows, closing earlier, and hiring security guards.

What a mess, a huge failure to provide that very basic government service, protecting the lives and property of law-abiding citizens and businesses. Ali goes on to propose the theory that the very rich are in cahoots, if only indirectly, in causing this vicious and widespread crime wave: “Those with enormous wealth are often also the loudest advocates for leniency towards criminals. Those individuals, who have the least contact with crime, are frequently the most enthusiastic proponents of reforms that reduce the safety of the average American. Democratic donors give their money to candidates who support defunding the police. They campaign against stop-and-search, three strikes, and “broken window” policies. They argue for lighter sentences or even the decriminalisation of certain crimes — shoplifting, for example, has been all but legalised in San Francisco.”

That will do it for today: people fleeing states where politicians have overtaxed, over-regulated, and under-reacted to rampant crime, Washington politicians continue to put their self enrichment higher in priority than the needs of Americans, and California implodes with crime and politician inaction.
