California Political Class Insanity and Socialism, Part 4: More Blackouts, High Gas Prices, and Bad Budget Priorities

We have done any number of posts strictly focusing on the crises in different California cities, from going broke to large homeless problems to medieval diseases making a comeback. What was once the land of opportunity is now the land of impending disasters on several fronts, fronts we will be exploring in a series of posts.

Before going further, let’s review a few California realities we have covered previously:

• There are upwards of 30,000 homeless Americans roaming the streets of San Francisco.
• Without a home to go to, the city has made it legal to defecate, urinate, and shoot up drugs anywhere in the city including in public and on the streets of the city.
• This has led to a public health hazard and has caused the city to hire five full time government employees who go around the city each day in hazmat gear to pick up human feces and to clean the spot where it was found.
• Things are so bad that residents can use a city cell phone app to report where they found piles of feces.
• There are upwards of 60,000 homeless Americans in Los Angeles that is causing some of the same problems that are going down in San Francisco.
• Public defecation and urination in LA is causing health problems in that city which has actually led to the outbreak of at least one medieval disease, typhus, and the concern is that the bubonic plague may also make a comeback, given how the exploding rat population has fed off of the garbage that homelessness causes.

The reason we are doing so is to point out that the state that has had the most far reaching intrusions into freedom and citizens’ lives, the state that has put its nose into every aspect of citizens’ lives, the state that has has misspent and overspent its way far down the road of bankruptcy, and the state that has reduced the freedom of its citizens the most is the state of California. The state is by far the most socialistic state in the union and has basically been ruled by a single party for decades, the Democrats. 

And since a number of Democratic candidates for President have basically declared themselves to be socialists, I thought it might be an interesting subject to explore what would happen if socialism took over the whole country. What would it look like if the country took on the aspects of socialism and Democratic rule that has swept up California. Warning: the future is NOT bright if California is the leading edge.

In our first two posts we discovered nine current characteristics of living in California:

1. The rate of sexually transmitted diseases is skyrocketing.
2. Gas prices are about twice as much as the average price across the country.
3. Citizens are enduring rolling electricity blackouts.
4. Medieval diseases are making a comeback in Los Angeles.
5. Solar panels do nothing for you when the electric company blacks out your area on purpose.
6. San Francisco no longer feels like America.
7. The state government financial situation is very bleak.
8. California city governments are also deep in debt.
9. California has a dysfunctional voter registration process.
10. State politicians worry more about what other states are doing rather than fix what is wrong in their own state.

Let’s find out what other “adventures” Californians are living through:

1) The state of California has over $200 billion in unfunded future liabilities. This debt burden will likely bankrupt the entire state government in the not too distant future. But rather than work fixing overspending and debt loads, the state government politicians are working on spending more, not less taxpayer wealth:

• The Democrats in the state government and in the governor’s mansion in California have recently passed a plan that would allow the state government and the state’s taxpayers to pay two years worth of tuition at community colleges.
• This will likely cost the taxpayers $42.6 million a year and affect over 30,000 community college students.
• So the governor and state legislators are worrying about helping 30,000 students avoid paying for their education while well over 100,000 state residents are homeless and roaming the streets of the state’s cities, with about 90,000 just in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
• According to the Feeding America organization, the average cost per meal to feed a homeless American is $2.94 per meal.
• Thus, in theory, that $42.6 million could provide over 14 million meals to the homeless population of California.

How many lives of needy California Americans could be helped by getting a good meal vs. paying for the college tuition of other citizens who in all likelihood know where their next meal is coming from? Such bad priorities of state politicians.

2) We have already talked about how gas costs so much more in California, in some places twice as expensive than the national average. Chris White, writing for the Daily Caller website on October 24, 2019, did an analysis of why that is the case and not surprisingly, state politicians and their over regulation of the lives of state residents are the main causes of sky high gas prices:

• The average price of a gallon of gas in the state is $4.18, about double the national cost.
• In some places in California the price is actually over $5.00 a gallon.
• In 2017, the governor at the time, Jerry Brown, signed legislation that raised the state’s gas tax 12 cents a gallon on gas and 20 cents a gallon on diesel.
• At the same time the state raised vehicle license fees from $25 to $175 per car.
• This tax increase was not an absolute number, it was based on a percentage of the price of gas so if the prices goes up the tax goes up also, a very sneaky way of increasing taxes without having to legislate it.
• According to Kara Siepmann, a spokeswoman for the Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA): “State and federal laws like the recently approved gas tax, the Low Carbon Fuel Standard, and other fuel-related taxes and fees add a little over 92 cents to each gallon of gas and have a profound impact on California’s businesses and communities.” 
• California has the second highest gas tax in the country.
• The state’s strict, and likely unnecessary, regulations result in California requiring gas sold in the state to be blended differently, adding additional costs to refining and making it impossible to import gas from other states, reducing the potential supply and increasing the price.
• Adding insult to injury, the special California blended gas changes depending on what time of year it is, adding additional costs and reducing the supply.
• Local and state zoning strategies have reduced the available land that could be used for gas stations, further reducing supply and increasing prices even more.
• There are 40% fewer gas stations in San Francisco than there were ten years ago.
• Some California cities are suing oil companies because of their obsession with global warming and if they go too far down that road these oil companies might just stop selling and refining gas in the state which would further increase prices.

Obviously these folks in the state government have a tremendous lack of economic knowledge, supply and demand drive prices. By reducing supply in so many ways prices go up and state taxpayers get stuck with more costs of living in the state with no relief insight.

3) Let’s finish up this series on the hell that California is becoming from a daily living perspective with an update on the intentional blackouts that are still going on, blackouts that definitely reduce the quality of life in the state:

• The latest blackouts by Pacific Gas and Electric are affecting almost a million customers and likely over 2 million people.
• This is being done to try and stop the utilities’ equipment from adding to the wildfires currently raging in the state.
• These people being blacked out range over 36 counties.
• The latest blackouts will last for two days.

Now, while the utility can rightfully be blamed for these disasters and the blackouts and fires its faulty equipment causes, keep in mind it is the state government which regulates all of the utilities’ operations. They should be overseeing the operations of all utilities so the state government bureaucracy, and the politicians that oversee this bureaucracy, are also to blame for this mess.

So in summary, Democrats and liberals who dominate state and local governments in the state of California have succeeded in bringing the state’s residents high gas prices, rolling electricity blackouts, bad spending priorities, a skyrocketing homeless population, the appearance of at least one Medieval disease, skyrocketing sexually transmitted diseases, heavy government debt burdens, and a dysfunctional voter registration system. 

This is what socialism looks like as practiced in California. It is not pretty along so many dimensions and yet, Democrats think socialism is still a good idea. Proving again, that when it comes to the American political class there is still no cure for stupid.

Let’s find out what other “adventures” Californians are living through:

1) America has been and should always be the land of the free where respecting others’ opinions is a given. But according to a recent article by Mairead McArdle, writing for the National Review website, California politicians not only force their control and ideas on California residents but they are trying to do the same with people outside of California:

• California politicians now have banned state sponsored travel to 11 states because they disagree with some aspect of those states’ laws and priorities.
• Iowa is the latest state to feel the “wrath” of California politicians.
• Apparently Iowa politicians do not want to use scarce Medicaid funds to pay for gender transition surgeries, preferring to use their limited funds for real sicknesses and real illnesses Iowans are suffering with.
• This ticked off California’s politicians so they put forth a ban that prohibits California state employees and college students to travel to Iowa using California state government money.

So, we know from previous discussions that there is a massive homeless problem in California, the state is going bankrupt, the state has seen the rise of Medieval diseases and the skyrocketing of STD disease rates, sky high gas prices and they are worried about what is going on in another state 1,500 miles away relative to tiny, tiny portion of the population in that other tiny, tiny state. Talk about bad priorities.

2)A recent report from KTLA discussed a voter registration study in California and the results were not good:

• Auditors found that in just a five month period that there were 84,000 duplicate voter registration records put on the voting books of California.
• In Los Angeles county there are 1.6 million more registered voters than there are eligible voters living in the county which is equivalent to having another city the size of Philadelphia in the state.
• Almost 20% of all counties in California have more registered voters than eligible voters.

It goes without saying that the potential for voter fraud and the destruction of one’s right to vote and their First Amendment rights is very high when the error range of your voting processes are so screwed up.

3) In our last California post we discussed the reality that the state of California has far more unfunded future liabilities than it has assets and tax revenue streams to pay for those liabilities. In fact, according to the Truth In Accounting organization, every California taxpayer would have to write a check to the state government for about $21,800 just to cover the debt shortfall, assuming that the shortfall does not get any larger, a highly unlikely event in that state.

The $21,800 is not the only check Californians would have to write from a debt perspective, seems that local government politicians have also dug their voters and constituents a deep debt hole at the city level:

• While Truth in Accounting gave the state government of California an “F” rating relative to its financial situation, it gives the city of Los Angeles a “D” rating, not much better.
• Every taxpayer in the city of Los Angeles would have to write a check for $6,000 to eliminate the unfunded debt liability of the city, meaning that a Los Angeles resident would have to spend $27,800 to keep their city and state governments from going bankrupt.
• But LA residents get off easy since if they lived in San Francisco they would have to write a check for $22,800 to help eliminate the deep debt hole that their city politicians have dug for their city, bringing their total debt burden to a whopping $44,600 to keep their city and state governments from going bankrupt.
• And the city debt burden per taxpayer is also bad in other California cities, $21,100 in Oakland, $4,000 in Sacramento, and $7,200 in Anaheim.

Thus, state politicians have created giant holes of unfunded liabilities at both the state AND local levels, holes that can only be filled by large increases in taxes or eventual bankruptcy.

So, what did we learn today about California politicians:

1. They have really bad priorities, worrying about a nit of an issue over a thousand miles away when major issues in their own state go unresolved.
2. Local California governments still do not know how to run an efficient and effective voter registration program.
3. It is not only the California state government that is likely headed towards bankruptcy because of its pathetic handling of the state’s financial obligations but local city politicians have also dug major debt holes for their city residents.

Combining the past three posts we see that the state of California, a laboratory for socialism and intrusive politicians, has resulted in: high rates of sexually transmitted diseases and the comeback of Medieval maladies, financial ruin, rolling electricity blackouts, bad priorities of politicians, high taxation, high homelessness rates, high gas prices, and a voting registration process that is out of control and open to massive fraud.

If California is a leading edge for the rest of the country, then this is the world we can expect.

Let’s find out what other “adventures” Californians are living through:

1) There are about 60,000 homeless Americans wandering the streets of Los Angeles. This has resulted in public defecation, public urination, and mountains of trash in the streets. All of this has led to an explosion in the rat population. Which is where we pick up the story:

• Apparently the medieval disease, typhus, has made a comeback in LA.
• And it is not only the homeless population that is danger, Los Angeles City Attorney Elizabeth Greenwood is suing the city for $5 million.
• She is claiming that she came down with typhus as a result of a rat infestation at her workplace...city hall!
• Keep in mind that typhus is spread by infected fleas on rats.
• The disease causes high fevers, headaches, and muscle pain.
• The disease dates back hundreds of years and had been mostly eliminated in modern societies because of improvements in sanitation and living standards.
• According to Dr. Negeen Farmland, a physician for the Saban Community Clinic, who often goes into the homeless population to treat those in need: "Typhus ... was something that was eradicated so many years ago. To have that come up again tells you that how bad the situation is."
• According to Ms. Greenwood, the disease, “felt like someone was driving stakes, railroad stakes through my eyes. It absolutely disabled me."
• Celebrity doctor,  Dr. Drew Pinsky, claims that typhus is not the only medieval making a comeback in LA, saying that the plague and tuberculosis are also making a comeback.
• City spokespeople insist that there are no typhus carrying fleas in the city hall.

But Ms. Greenwood is just one of many new typhus cases so wherever she got it is really immaterial to the bigger picture, she has it, which gives you an idea of how unhealthy LA has become.

2) According to a Freedom Outpost website article by Alicia Luke on October 13, 2019, Californians are getting a rude awakening because their politicians have forced many of them to install and use solar panels:

• It appears that even if you have solar panels on your home or business, in all likelihood you still have no electricity when the electric company goes to intentional blackouts.
• You see, the vast majority of solar installations feed electricity to the electric company’s grid during the daylight hours and the electric company gives back electrical power at night or on overcast days.
• There is no storage of solar panel electricity in someone’s home of business unless they also purchased expensive batteries.
• So when the electric company goes to an intentional blackout mode like what is going on in California now, solar powered buildings may just as well had no panels since those panels are useless in blackouts.

So, let’s review: California politicians, i.e. Democrats, mandate and encourage residents and businesses to convert to solar power at great expense. But those who put out the big bucks for solar energy are just as helpless when the local utilities go into intentional blackout mode, making solar power owners just as much in the dark as their neighbors who do not have any investment in solar energy.

3) I can give you statistics and news reports of how the socialism policies of California have brought disease, high taxes, public defecation and urination, skyrocketing housing prices, and other challenges for state residents. But let me refer you to an article by someone who once thought that San Francisco was one of the greatest cities in the world. But now, he says that, “San Francisco no longer feels like its in America”:

4) Let’s finish up today’s California lesson in socialism and the agony and failures it causes by going to a wonderful website run by an organization called “Truth In Accounting.” These folks do deep dives into the financial status and condition for every state and many major cities to get a true financial picture of what is really going on with a government entity’s financial condition. In the past, state and local governments have used accounting tricks to hide the true financial picture of a government. This website does accounting the right way to get rid of the hiding places and portray a true financial picture.

As you will see from its work, it is not just the living conditions that are deteriorating rapidly in California, the financial picture is not that great either. In fact, it has earned a grade of “F” from Truth In Accounting’s analysis because:

• The state will have about $114 billion in assets to pay its future, expected bills and costs.
• But it will face $389 billion in total liabilities that need to be funded, leaving it $275 billion short of what it needs to pay its current commitments and expected costs.
• To theoretically cover this shortfall, every California taxpayer would have to write a check for $21,800 to help the state government not go bankrupt.
• But that number is probably too small since California politicians have not shown any propensity or desire to get spending under control so the financial situation is likely to get worse before it gets better.
• This financial situation makes it the 43rd worst state in the union according to Truth In Accounting’s analysis.
• State politicians have committed California taxpayers to pay over half a trillion dollars in future government employee retirement benefits in the coming years but they have not funded over $220 billion of the half a trillion dollar liability.
• The state also has almost $134 billion in bonds that will have to be paid off in the future.
• If every taxpayer did give the state’s politicians $21,800 to pay off the financial hole these politicians dug, then that would be money that could not be used to grow the economy and create jobs for the residents of the state. That money is strictly used for non-productive payoff of debts. But if the economy stops growing than there would be even less tax revenue coming into the state government which would make the debt crisis worse which then leads to a financial death spiral.
• In any case, as the state government gives more and more of its tax revenue to pay off its staggering F-rated debt load, that is less and less money available to improve schools, fix roads and bridges, help the thousands of homeless, etc. And thus, the quality California life goes out the window.

So, in our first California post we learned that:

1. The rate of sexually transmitted diseases is skyrocketing.
2. Gas prices are about twice as much as the average price across the country.
3. Citizens are enduring rolling electricity blackouts.

In this post we learned that:

1. You do not have to be homeless to get a medieval disease in Los Angeles, even white collar workers who work in the LA city hall can catch typhus.
2. Solar panels as required or suggested by Democrats in the state mean nothing when you have to suffer through unexpected and days long intentional electric company blackouts.
3. Someone who once loved San Francisco now thinks that it does not feel like you are in America any more when you visit the city.
4. The state government’s financial situation is worthy of an F and will eventually lead the state to bankruptcy.

Again, what was once possibly the greatest place to live in the country is now probably one of the worst places to live, likely do to the socialism mantra and failed programs that Democrats have brought to the entire state.

July, 2019, Part 9, Political Class Insanity: LA Mayor's Bad Priorities, Bubonic Plague Outlook for LA, and Inane Auto Repair Rules...In California, Of Course

It is another month which means it is again time to review the latest political class insanity from Washington and around the world. Political class insanity takes many forms including the wasting of taxpayer wealth, criminal fraud within government programs, inane and stupid political quotes and actions, the inability to create and implement effective and efficient government programs, stupid and ill performing economic policies and strategies, and other forms of insanity that continue to evolve and surprise and shock us.

Let’s get started:

1) We have often made the case that it seems like Democrats today care more about illegal immigrants than they care about hungry, homeless, and other needy Americans. You never see Democrats visiting homeless shelters or street encampments, you never see Democrats complaining that American homeless folks do not have enough to eat or get enough medical care like they do for illegal immigrants.

And this conclusion was recently proven right again out in Los Angeles. Keep in mind that there are probably about 60,000 homeless Americans walking the streets of L.A. the city and L.A. the county. Keep in mind that the number of homeless there grew by double digits in the past year. Keep in mind that this is not a new problem, the political class in L.A. has been faced with this problem for years and it never seems to get any better. Keep in mind that there are now outbreaks of typhus, a medieval disease caused by the squalor caused by the massive homelessness and the accompanying explosive growth in the rat population.

Keep that in mind as you read the following recent actions and words of the L.A. mayor:

• Trump has instructed immigration officials to begin rounding up and sending back to their home countries illegal immigrants who do not belong here, i.e. they have broken our laws.
• This got LA Mayor Eric Garcetti up in arms and protesting and trying to protect the illegal immigrants in his city: “We’ve all heard reports the Trump administration is threatening to round up and deport thousands of immigrant families in cities across America this weekend. I want every Angeleno to know their rights and how to exercise them. Remember, you have the right to remain silent. You don’t have to open your door to an ICE agent that doesn’t have a warrant signed by a judge. You have the right to speak to a lawyer before signing any documents or speaking to law enforcement. And, if you need help finding an attorney, you can call 311 and learn more about our Justice Fund and other resources that offer legal support.”
• He went on to counsel them on how to act and what information to record if they are approached or apprehended by immigration officials.
• He concluded his remarks with a summary of how much he loved illegal immigrants: “In Los Angeles, we draw strength from the diverse dynamic communities that call our city home and we support immigrant families because they’re our friends, neighbors, colleagues, confidants, our fellow taxpayers, local business owners, and co-workers. For us, this isn’t partisan politics. It’s about being a good neighbor and we will never let fear and intimidation win the day. We are in this together.”

Would not his time be better spent fixing the homeless plight of 60,000 homeless AMERICANS in his city? How come he never said that the 60,000 homeless AMERICANS are his “friends, neighbors, colleagues, confidants, etc.?” How come he has never been a “good neighbor” to the 60,000 homeless AMERICANS in his city? How come he has never said he supports homeless AMERICAN families among those 60,000?

And let’s move beyond the 60,000 homeless folks. LA has one of the highest poverty levels in the country. LA schools stink at educating its kids. LA probably has a crumbling infrastructure like the rest of the country. But he focuses on the plight and welfare of illegal immigrants, wasting time and resources on that problem while his American citizens suffer in so many different ways. Pathetic priorities.

2) Let’s stay in L.A. for this piece of insanity. But before we do that let’s look at some Wikipedia information on a Dr. David Drew Pinsky:

• He is known as a celebrity doctor who is a trained medical internist, and an addiction and medicine specialist.
• He is the former medical director for the Department of Chemical Dependency at Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena, California. 
• He a former chief resident at Huntington Memorial Hospital.
• He has a private medical practice.
• He got his medical degree at USC and did his residency at USC County Hospital.
• He has been active in TV and radio shows over the years which got him the “celebrity doctor” nickname.

I give you his medical background and you can decide if you believe the viewpoints he discussed in a recent interview:

• It is his professional opinion that Los Angeles faces a pending outbreak of bubonic plague.
• If true, this revival of a deadly medieval disease will be caused by the tremendous growth in the LA homeless population and the concurring growth in the rodent population, problems that local politicians have had no success in curbing.
• He claims he predicted the recent outbreak in typhus in LA, another medieval disease.
• Both typhus and bubonic plague are often carried by rats, transferred to fleas to pets and from pets to humans.
• As a point of reference, the bubonic plague wiped out one third of the European population in the fourteenth century.
• The last time the bubonic plague occurred in the U.S. was in 1924 in, surprise, surprise, Los Angeles.
• Dr. Pinsky says that conditions are ripe in that same city for a recurrence almost one hundred years later.
• He claims that LA is one of only a few cities in the country that has no rodent/rat control plan: “And if you look at the pictures of Los Angeles, you will see that the homeless encampments are surrounded by dumps. People defecate there, they throw their trash there, and the rats just proliferate there.”
• In addition, the huge size of the homeless population results in the raw sewage of 60,000 homeless people washing down city sewers to the ocean every day.
• Eventually he predicts that this could grow into a national emergency with the intervention of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Red Cross, and the National Guard “if we start to see the diseases that I think we are going to.”

Nasty, nasty stuff. Two observations: maybe it is time to throw out the existing political class in the LA area, obviously they have let a problem get out of control with potentially far reaching national emergency health implications. Second, why is the mayor wasting his time counseling and focusing on illegal immigrants on how to avoid being arrested by immigration officials. Wouldn’t his time and resources be better spent on fixing the homeless issue, avoiding the bubonic plagues, and stopping the pollution of the ocean from his city? Just saying, a really, really bad set of priorities.

And the same goes for the national politicians from California. Is it more important for Nancy Pelosi to feud with Trump and focus on helping illegal immigrants avoid our laws or would her time and resources be better spent helping her home state, and home town of San Francisco, a city with the same types of problems as LA? I know my answer but that priority viewpoint obviously does not line up with the priorities of Pelosi and Garcetti.

3) One last piece of political class insanity today and of course, it comes from California. In Sacramento County, you are allowed to the following minor repair work on your car:

• Brake part replacement
• Minor tune-ups
• Change of oil and filter
• Repair of flat tires
• Lubrication
• Other similar operations

Okay, sounds reasonable to some degree. But the law comes with restrictions:

• You cannot use tools not normally found in a residence or home.
• You cannot work on cars that are registered to people not residing at the residence.
• You cannot work on cars outside a fully enclosed garage.
• You cannot have a vehicle being inoperable on your property for more than 24 hours.

So if I get this right, if you have a tool to do brake work that is not normally found in a home, and how many homes have break work specific tools, you are in violation of the law even if that tool is kept locked away in a closed garage.

So if I get this right, if our mom is having brake problems and comes over to your home or you daughter needs an oil change and comes over to your house, you are breaking the law since neither of them live at your house.

So if I get this right, if you are working on your car and the parts supplier store will not have the part you need for 25 hours, rendering your car inoperable for more than 24 hours, you are breaking the law.

So if I get this right, if you do not have a fully enclosed garage but need to fix a flat tire in your driveway, you are breaking the law.

I understand the need to prevent someone from opening a renegade auto repair shop in a residential neighborhood. I understand the desire to not have dangerous auto chemicals running down the street gutters in a residential neighborhood.

But really, can we have a little common sense here from our politicians? Is the time, debate, and energy worth it to micro manage the lives of the citizens in the county? Are there not far more important issues to worry about than checking mom’s car registration home address location? Again, the bad, bad priorities of the American political class. 

More insanity to follow. Unfortunately.

How American Politicians Have Allowed LA To Become a Third World Cesspool

We have often discussed the reality that Democrats/ liberals/socialists in west coast cities have turned once wonderful cities into crime infested, feces infested, drug infested cesspools with ever growing numbers of homeless folks and drug addicts. In all cases and all cities, Democrats and Socialists have been in charge of local government for so long that they alone are responsible for the mess they have turned these cities into. And none of them seem to have clue or desire to fix what they have so severely broken, a typical trait of most American politicians.

Let’s continue that theme today, basing our discussion on a recent article in the LA Times by Steven Lopez on June 2, 2019, “Rats at the police station, filth on L.A. streets — scenes from the collapse of a city that’s lost control”:

• The homeless, drug addiction, and public defecation and urination problems have gotten so bad in the city of Los Angeles that the rat population has exploded which has led to such unsanitary conditions that a recently city employee was found to have a strain of bacteria that causes typhoid fever, a truly Medieval disease.
• There are over 50,000 homeless Americans in just the city of Los Angeles.
• This has caused entire blocks of city streets to be overrun with trash and makeshift shelters usually reserved for third world countries.
• These unsanitary conditions have led to reports of typhoid and typhus outbreaks.
• According to Mr. Lopez’s first hand reporting: “On Thursday I saw a county health inspector on rat patrol between 7th and 8th streets on skid row. He was carrying a clipboard and said he had found droppings and other evidence of rodents, and I asked where: “Everywhere,” he said.”
• He claims that once a sanitation department cleans up one mess another mess pops up nearby with sometimes the mess consisting of bags of human excrement.
• His first hand reporting: “OK, the shovels were still out on Crocker Street, which was looking pretty good, so I went over to East 10th Street and Naomi Avenue, several blocks away, near the Coca-Cola distribution center. The north side of 10th Street looked like a landfill. Trash was scattered in the street and on the sidewalk, and there was a little bit of everything. Splintered lumber, metal poles, soiled blankets and clothing, a sofa, buckets, boxes.”
• He interviewed a homeless person on the street who had recently returning to his makeshift shelter on the street but said he was going to go somewhere else, his current street shelter had too many rats.
• In the middle of one  urban homeless encampment, the writer saw a standing puddle of murky green water, having no clue how people could live near it or what it consisted of.
• The article included some words from a local businessman, James Campbell: “I call the city [when a pile of trash appears] and they usually come within a week, but then it’s always piled right back up again. I don’t even like stepping out here because of the [drug] needles.”
• Mr. Lopez then rightfully goes off on current Mayor Eric Garcetti and the 15 members of the city council who apparently have no clue, no desire, or no ability to fix what a mess they have allowed a great city to become.

You can tell that the writer is very distraught at what has happened to his city and hometown as he should be. These problems did not crop up overnight and yet very little progress has been made to stem the tide of disgusting living conditions. 

But his is what happens when you have a professional political class whose only loyalty is to themselves to make sure they are well compensated for as long as possible which means staying in office as long as possible. Getting and staying in office is their only priority.

Which is why two things have to happen in this country:

• First, we need term limits so that anyone elected to office has only a defined window to make a difference and knows that spending time to get reelected is not an option any more. Maybe then they will actually do some good for others and not just for themselves.
• We need to start holding people accountable for their actions, whether it is politicians, government bureaucrats, and yes, the drug addicted and homeless folks that need our help but also have to realize that they have to also contribute to their well being.

It is so unbelievable that in the midst of the longest running economic recovery ever, when tax revenues are at an all time high and unemployment are staying at or near historically low levels, that such filth and degradation can be allowed to exist in this country. And as we have said above, the politicians have not the will, ability or desire to fix anything.
