October, 2018, Part 1, Political Class Insanity: Hypocrisy, Tax Evasion, and Body Language of Those In The Senate

It is another month which means it is again time to review the latest political class insanity from Washington and around the world. Political class insanity takes many forms including the wasting of taxpayer wealth, criminal fraud within government programs, inane and stupid political quotes and actions, the inability to create and implement effective and efficient government programs, stupid and ill performing economic policies and strategies, and other forms of insanity that continue to evolve and surprise and shock us.

Let’s get started:

1) Unless you have been living in a cave, you know that there has been a long, grueling, and embarrassing set of Senate hearings to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. In what was supposed to be a serious and solemn process was turned into a circus by Senate Democrats on so many levels. I will not go into details here on how those Democrats embarrassed the country and the Constitution here, it would take days.

However, I will focus on the inane comments made by a Senator that was not on the committee conducting the confirmation hearings. Heidi Heitkamp is a Democratic Senator from North Dakota. She obviously voted with the full Senate on whether or not to confirm Kavanaugh and claimed that initially she was going to vote yes on his nomination. But she changed her mind and voted no.

Did she change her mind because of something Kavanaugh said during the hearings? Did she change her mind because of new information that deemed him not a good candidate? Did he cheat on his taxes? Did he commit a crime? What information made her change her mind?

Apparently it was one of the most insane and stupid actions that any politician ever gave for their actions. In her own words: “It’s something I do,” she added, explaining why she watched the hearing without the television volume turned on. “We communicate not only with words, but with our body language and demeanor. I saw somebody who was very angry, who was very nervous, and I saw rage that a lot of people said, ‘Well, of course you’re going to see rage; he’s being falsely accused.’ But it is at all times you’re to acquit yourself with a demeanor that’s becoming of the Court.”

Rather than base this critical decision on facts and testimony, she based her vote on BODY LANGUAGE. Why even have hearings and discovery efforts, Senator? Let’s secretly videotape judicial candidates and vote based on their body language. Why let facts get in the way, it would save a lot of time and angst; body language, great way to operate a government. Idiocy.

2) Long, long ago, Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy was driving from a political event with a young female staffer, Mary Jo Kopechne, in his car. Unfortunately, he drove off a bridge on that drive and into a tidal channel. He swam away, told no one of the incident until the next day which, of course, by that time Ms. Kopechne had drowned.

There are those of us that believe that Kennedy needed time to get his family’s extensive resources organized to protect his budding political career from scandal(s): what was he doing he doing out late with a young, single female and why had he not immediately reported the accident, providing at least a chance of surviving? There were a whole lot spin and shenanigans going on to prove his innocence at the time.

So a Democratic Senator directly contributes to the death of a young woman long ago but present day Democrats try to deny a Republican nominated candidate for the Supreme Court because of a likely false attempted rape story from over three decades ago. Democrat John Kerry recently fell down totally rabbit hole of idiotic logic when he stated that Kavanaugh had to be denied a Supreme Court seat because of a flimsy and likely false, decades past accusation in which no one died. But that Kennedy’s actions that actually led to a death/murder, not so bad: “He [Kennedy] stood up and owned moments where he knew he’d stepped over the line.” So, abandoning Kopechne and leaving her to drown was just a “step over the line”?

Help me with the logic, John. A flimsy, likely false, unsubstantiated attempted rape accusation is good enough to stop someone’s career but contributing to or causing an actual death is no big deal, just an innocent step over the line? Cold hearted, insane, soulless view of life Mr. Kerry.

3) Elizabeth Warren is a Democratic Senator from Massachusetts. Like most Democrats she would like to raise everyone’s taxes in the country so that she and her Democratic peers would have more power over us which in turn would reduce our personal freedom. But as is always the case, politicians want us to suffer while they create loopholes from themselves to avoid the pain they want to inflict on us:
  • According to a Boston Herald news report, Warren and her husband have filed some pretty shaky tax returns over the past years.
  • It appears, on the surface, that they took some very hefty and questionable deductions on their returns.
  • These charitable deductions total in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • Warren claims these inflated donations were a “mistake” but this “mistake” occurred over many years and many tax returns and included high claimed donations of clothes, books, and other items.
  • For example, in 2017, they reported annual income of $913,442 and they deducted a whopping $81,858 in charitable deductions (about 9% of her income), leading to the obvious conclusion, that’s a lot of clothes to donate.
  • In the previous five years, their charitable donations totaled over $190,000, again leading to the same conclusion, that is a lot of used clothes to donate.
  • Considered from another perspective, how many pieces of used clothes does it take to hit a value of of over $190,000?
  • And it appears that it was mostly clothing since Warren’s office claims that the donations that often went to organizations that were focused on helping kids was indeed used clothing.
  • When the Herald contacted Warren’s office, they said that there was a data entry error in the Senator’s 2014 tax return but that did not affect what taxes the Senator paid: “The original values of donated clothing and household items listed on Senator Warren’s 2014 tax return (column g) were entry errors that did not affect the ultimate amount that she owed to the IRS because the deductions taken (column h) were correct. The accurate original value was closer to the original value of similar clothing and household items in Senator Warren’s 2012 taxes (around $8,000).”
  • But that does not explain the huge $81,000 charitable deduction in 2017 or the other large deductions over the past five years which apparently included thousands of dollars in donated books and in-flight WI-FI expenses, neither of which I believe is a legitimate deductible expense.
So the good Senator wants you and I to pay more in taxes but behind the scenes she allegedly is trying to minimize her tax burden with shady and possibly illegal tax manipulations. As always with greedy politicians, the word hypocrisy rings true.

That will do it for today’s insanity: a possible tax dodging Senator, a hypocritical politician that thinks false rape attempt accusations are more important than negligent homicide, and a Senator that thinks body language is more important than facts. More insanity to follow.
