Every month we devote posts to just general political class insanity that is running rampant through the country. The members of the American political class Far continue to show that they are incapable of efficiently operating any level of government in this country.
Even their best efforts are almost always ineffective at resolving any problem facing Americans. They spend a great amount of time not trying to improve the lives of their citizens but continually ensuring their reelection and enriching themselves, their families, and their friends in the process, all at taxpayer expense.
1)We have often discussed the reality that a major American city or state government will soon go bankrupt in the not too distant future. Top candidates for this dubious honor have always been the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois. The high taxation, high crime rate, and other factors of the city and state are driving residents and businesses out of other states and cities, reducing the tax revenue and tax bases which eventually will result in the city and/or state government going bankrupt.
Given this dire situation, one would hope that city and state politicians were working hard to fix the ailments that are driving people elsewhere and endangering the city and state fiscal situations. But as always with American politicians, to think and hope they are focused on the real issues is certainly going to lead to disappointment:
State politicians recently passed a piece of legislation called HB 4409.
HB 4409 does not attack the crime and violence Chicago, it does not reduce taxes for overly tax city and state residents, it doesn't provide help to homeless, hungry and drug addicted residents.
No, it does none of those worthy goals, it simply makes it official that criminal suspects and actual criminals in the state will no longer be called offenders, they will be called “justice impacted individuals.”
Not only is this a stupid priority, but it will require that taxpayer money be spent by every government entity in the state to change every one of the government documents that reference criminal offenders, a total waste of government wealth and resources.
A classic “rearranging the chairs on the Titanic” moment: we do not know how to fix real problems so we will look busy doing this nonsense and hope our voters realize we did nothing to justify the high taxes or to make their lives better and safer.
2)Another prime city likely to go bankrupt is San Francisco. Its politicians have made such a mess of the city that the following is just a short list of the problems they have created in a once great city:
Homelessness is a major and growing problem.
Crime and drug addiction make the city streets very unsafe.
A stupid city law that made it basically made it lawful to shoplift anything you wanted as long as its value was less than about $900 has caused shoplifting crimes to skyrocket which in turn has caused dozens of real locations to close, taking tax dollars and neighborhood jobs with them.
The city government has been lax in cracking down on all crimes and supporting its law enforcement officers.
The city is now a dirty, drug addicted, high crime, third world type city.
Thus, given the negative impact of liberal politicians policies in San Francisco, one would hope that politicians elsewhere would realize that they should do the opposite of what San Francisco politicians did in order to not turn their own cities into crime infested, declining urban centers. But alas, as we said above, hoping that politicians will take right, smart, and common sense actions is never a good bet.
Consider what the mayor in Boston is considering doing, having learned nothing from San Francisco:
The current mayor of Boston, Michelle Wuh, says that she is all for the prosecution of those that break the city’s laws.
But she is also calling for the abolition of the city’s gang member registry.
Of course, like most big city liberal mayors, she basically said and believes that the registry is racist, in that it is unfair to “marginalized communities.”
According to the New York Post, she also wants to decriminalize a whole serious of crimes including “shoplifting, larceny, disorderly conduct, receiving stolen property, driving with a suspended license, breaking and entering with property damage, wanton and malicious destruction of property, threats, minor in possession of alcohol, marijuana possession, possession with intent to distribute, non-marijuana drug possession.”
Again, politicians never learn. By getting rid of police tools to control gang violence and crime and making crimes like shoplifting, larceny, and other crimes not crimes, Ican almost guarantee the city of Boston will share the same fate of cities like Sam Francisco: businesses closing and moving, residents leaving the city, the tax base shrinking and who knows, Boston may join our short list of cities that could go bankrupt in the very near future.
3)To say Americans are fed up with the country’s politicians is probably a gross understatement. In Gallup’s tracking studies, a measly 13% of Americans approve of how Congress is handling its job. And out in Oregon, that same feeling is feeding a desire for freedom from over a dozen counties in the state:
13 counties in rural Oregon have voted in favor of leaving the state of Oregon and becoming part of Idaho.
The attraction of moving to Idaho includes lower taxes, less crime, less homelessness, less gun control, and less freedom restrictions.
They want to get out from under the bigger cities like Portlaand where that city’s politicians have raised taxes, failed to reduce crime and homelessness, and want to control Second Amendment rights.
As we have said so many times, people just want to be free: free to keep their hard earned wealth for themselves and their families, free from oppressive government and politician control, and free from fear of their lives and property. Moving to a new state is a long difficult process but the first step has been taken: politicians beware.
4)We have pointed out how wasteful most government entities are and how corrupt and inept the many politicians operating these government entities are. But apparently government corruption is not restricted just to sitting politicians;
Robert Burke is a retired admiral of the U.S. Navy.
He is also now an indicted and retired admiral of the U.S. Navy, having recently been arrested on bribery charges.
He is accused of receiving bribes from a private company to steer Navy business to that company and accepting a job with that company after he retired.
The indictment states that Burke failed to disclose to the Navy that he had received this job offer before arranging the Navy contract with the bribing company, leading to the charges of lying to officials and concealing material facts.
He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
The good news is that this corruption was found out. The bigger question is how many more corrupt officials and politicians are out there that continue to get away with their own self enrichment schemes.
That will do it for today: government corruption is not restricted to politicians, Oregon citizens yearning to be free, stupidity in the Boston mayor’s office, and bad priorities for public safety in Illinois.
