January, 2026, Part 4, Political Class Insanity: Mountains Of Government Debt at the State and Local Level, Virginia Raises Taxes, and Congress Members Shower Money on Their Alma Matters

It’s been a little while so let’s check in with the American political class and review the latest political class insanity in several  different areas.

1)We have  often talked,  reviewed and  fretted  about the sad reality that the American political class segment in  Washington has run  up a national  debt that is fast approaching an incomprehensible level of $40,000,000,000,000. Mathematically, to pay off this debt,  every American would have to pay almost $120,000 each or almost half a  million dollars for a family of  four.

But the debt problem does not end in Washington:

  • According to an analysis by Reason  magazine, as of the end of 2023, state and local  government entities had a total state, county, and local debt level of about $6,100,000,000,000 or six trillion dollars.

  • It would cost each American  over $18,000 each to pay off this debt load in  addition to the debt load of the Federal government.

  • California’s government  entities have the  largest debt  load of about $1 trillion.

  • Other states with very high debt  levels include New York (almost $800 billion), Texas ($550 billion), Illinois (just over $400 billion), and New Jersey (just over $300 billion).

  • Note that four of the top five debt burdened states, California, New York,  Illinois, and  New Jersey, are the top four states that we believe are in a race to become the first state government to go bankrupt.

  • Eleven states have a debt  load over $100 billion.

  • On a per resident basis, New York gets the top spot with a debt  burden of $39,491 per person, New Jersey is third with a debt level of $33,338 per person, Illinois is fourth with a debt level of $31,873 per person,  and California is seventh with a debt level of $27,362 per person.

The real disgrace  of all of  this debt at every level of government,  is that politicians at every level of government have misspent, wasted, and abused the money they were entrusted with: Social Security is heading towards insolvency,  Medicare is headed towards insolvency our infrastructure is falling apart, our education efforts generally fail to educate, our electric grid is old and vulnerable, etc. We basically have nothing positive to show for the debt that politicians have run up.

And yet across many states (New York, New Jersey,  Illinois, California), the top candidates we feel are leading the race to state government  bankruptcy, the politicians continue to raise taxes  and  incur debt when they have  proven they are poor stewards of the tax money they already get.

2)One of the  drivers of a state spiraling downward into financial insolvency is the high tax burden state politicians place on their residents and businesses. But these people never learned that raising and raising taxes eventually drives businesses and residents to other geographic locations where they can keep their hard earned wealth.

Obviously, in Virginia, these economic lessons have not been learned:

  • Virginia Democrats have introduced a number of tax burden increasing laws for their citizens and businesses to bear.

  • HB 378 would impose a 3.8% income tax on individuals, trusts, and  estates and  would increase the state’s marginal income tax rate to 9.55%.

  • HB 900 would allow sales tax increases on transportation districts.

  • It would also put a new tax on every retail delivery (think Amazon, Uber Eats, UPS, etc.).

  • HB 919 would place an 11% tax on firearm and ammunition purchases.

  • HB 978 would expand the sales and use tax to  dry cleaning , landscaping and other currently exempt services.

  • The new governor will re-enter Virginia into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative which will increase state residential and  business utility bills.

  • Meanwhile, neighboring states are reducing the tax burden on  their people.

  • West Virginia is phasing out its state income tax, North Carolina reduced its income tax rate from 4.25% to 3.99%, and is also phasing out its corporate income tax, and Georgia and South Carolina are also looking to phase out their state income tax altogether.

  • According to Grover Norquist of the Americans for Tax Reform: “It’s always a bad time to raise taxes, but it would be particularly foolish for Governor Spanberger and the Democrats who now control Richmond to do so at this time of heightened state tax competition. Governors and lawmakers in other states aren’t just seeking to reduce income taxes and other levies, they’re pursuing full tax elimination in many state capitals. For individuals, families, and employers who wish to avoid the hostile tax policies pursued by Democrats in Richmond, they have plenty of options close by.”

Several years ago we discussed a situation  in Maryland where state politicians raised the state income tax rate on anyone making over a  million dollars a year, expecting to gain over $100 million in increased tax revenue from millionaire earning residents. Several years later, they found that not only were they not getting the additional $100 million in increased tax revenue, but tax revenue from millionaire residents actually fell by over a quarter billion dollars.

Millionaires are not  stupid: they either found ways to  shield themselves from the tax increase or more  likely,  moved across the border to  another state to protect themselves from  the increased taxes. The same thing is happening in  California, New York,  Illinois, and New Jersey: residents and  businesses are simply picking up and  leaving these high tax states and relocating to lower taxed states like Texas and Florida.

The same basic economic principle will also play out to the dismay of the economically ignorant politicians in Virginia: their residents and  businesses will eventually migrate out of the state, taking their tax base and tax revenue with them and who knows, Virginia might enter the race to bankruptcy court also.

3)And while politicians keep taking our money and wealth, they constantly come up with novel and despicable new ways to waste that wealth.

The following outlines a wasteful  spending habit of Washington politicians that we had never heard of before:

  • According to the organization, Open The Books, the U.S. taxpayer does not  know that millions of their dollars are funneled to the favorite universities of Washington politicians.

  • Last year, 24 U.S Senators were allowed  to designate $636 million dollars of your tax money to the universities they attended as students.

  • Kentucky Senator Mitch  McConnell  requested $164.9 million for his  alma mater, the University of Kentucky, which follows on his diverting $750,000 of taxpayer money way back  in  2003 so  that the university could build the  Mitch McConnell Center For Distance Learning.

  • West Virginia Senator Jim Justice requested  $57.5 million  of taxpayer money for his alma mater, Marshall University,  including a whopping $1,5  million to “increase grant  writing and project development capacity.”

  • Washington Senator Patty Murray requested $59.9  million of taxpayer money for her alma mater, Washington State.

You get the  idea, we will not go through the entire list of Senators but it  is certainly a novel easy to  waste money  feeding the egos and the alma mater universities of those in the Senate. Meanwhile, millions of Americans are homeless, hungry, in need of medical  care, lack health insurance, and are stretched to the  limit within their budgets, But the priorities of these Senators are their alma  maters, not their constituents.

Oh, by the way,  the above numbers are just for Senators’  alma maters, there is another whole other slush fund the members of the House of Representatives use to reward their personal alma maters and their egos.

That will do it for today: state and local government have also run up untold, and possibly unpayable mountains of debt, but have not fixed any societal problems, Virginia may have just entered the state government race to bankruptcy with their bevy of new taxes, and Congressional members shower millions on their alma maters while their constituents continue to suffer.

A Grand Proposal For A Grand Coalition To Restore Freedom In America

The following proposal to restore freedom and liberty in this country, two principles that are under attack by any number of sources, not the least of which is the American political class, is being mailed out this week. As freedom ebbs in this country, something dramatic has to be done to turn back the tide of oppression, unseat the entrenched, long term politicians whose first priority is self enrichment, and restore the Founders concepts embedded in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Your comments would be appreciated and if you agree with what the proposal sets forth, your support going forward would be great!

Good day. My name is Walter (“Bruno”) Korschek and I am just a regular American. I am not an employee or formally affiliated with any of the organizations listed above.

However, I have been a big fan of all of the listed organizations for a long time. I have been a Libertarian voter since Roger McBride ran in the 1970s. I have been a long time subscriber to Reason magazine and Cato. And I have enjoyed and been positively challenged by the work, the research, opinions, and publications of every organization listed above for many, many years.

Thus, I am an American who cherishes the idea of freedom and liberty, an ideal that I think is a common link among all of you and your organizations. I believe that the concept of America, with its foundation in the Constitution and Bill of Rights, has provided humanity the best chance ever to have regular folks like myself live in a free, safe, and prosperous country.

But as you and your organizations are well aware, that ideal of freedom is under attack as we speak, by an overreaching, entrenched, and corrupt American political class. Every freedom has been chipped away at over the years, be it freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to bear arms, freedom to gather, and freedom to not be dominated and bullied by government bureaucrats, rules, and regulations.

From the failure of Obama Care to excessive and draconian pandemic shutdowns and lock downs and to the obvious future failure of the New Green Deal, this loss of freedom cannot be justified by the gaining of wonderful new government services. Just about every government program and service, from the Federal government level to the local government level, eats up wealth, destroys freedom, and provides substandard services and results in return.

And this loss of freedom seems to be accelerating. Outrageous government debt will make future Americans economic slaves to this debt burden if nothing is done. Censorship in so many forms is growing more and more prevalent as those in charge form partnerships with a failed and corrupt mainstream press and tech companies to control information and news for the benefit of the elitists that operate those entities.

The chance of returning America to its roots of freedom, liberty, minimal government interference in our lives is becoming more and more difficult every day. Which is why I am writing to all of you. While I have the utmost respect for the work you and your organizations do, working independently of each other has not been enough to stem the tide of totalitarianism and political corruption in this country that is destroying the very fabric of freedom.

Thus, I am proposing a grand coalition of the organizations listed above, a coalition which is solely focused on restoring freedom to this country and its citizens. Working independently has proven your dedication to freedom but has not stemmed the tide of an ever growing attack on freedom. Working together may be the only hope in this country of moving the needle back towards liberty and away from darkness.

Think about what you each could bring to the table of this liberty coalition. There are political parties that already have the infrastructure in place to get on ballots. There are research and policy experts that can prove the value of freedom and the negatives of government dominance. You have journalists that can spread that research and policy information to the public. Together you would be so much stronger and effective than continuing to operate independently of each other.

Now, I realize that there might be differences of opinion on individual issues and matters. But there has to be some sort of overarching agreement and consensus on freedom and liberty that can be agreed on by all of you and put forth to the public. Every family has its own disagreements but the family usually stays together for the common, overriding good of everyone. Same with the coalition, find the common ground of liberty that you all share and handle the outlier issues later. Erect a freedom tent that would be broad enough to attract disaffected voters of all kinds under a common theme of restoring freedom to this country.

This does not mean you and your organizations cede your identities and individual organizational goals to this effort. Your unique identities and skills are what would make the coalition that much stronger. You each come at freedom from a unique and different perspective which would make that freedom tent broader and more powerful.

I am only a single American, I cannot make this happen, but I would make a few suggestions about the next steps:
  • This coalition and its structure, working principles, staffing, contributions, decision making process, etc. has to come together quickly, the ebbing away of freedom is not abating and thus, time is of the essence.
  • Being right, doing the proper analysis, having the most effective policy proposals, and putting forth great candidates for office, are all necessary to success but not a guarantee of success. While I did not vote for Donald Trump, I did recognize that he had a wonderfully simple but effective message that resonated with tens of millions of Americans, “Make America Great Again.” A similar message is required for this coalition, one that is simple but effective, easily understood but which conveys the deep need for change that this coalition would stand for. Smarter people than me are necessary to find that powerful theme and message.
  • The Presidential ticket that this coalition puts forth has to be identified and put into action as soon as possible. We cannot wait until the summer of 2024 to identify the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates this coalition will support, that is not enough time to get the message out. By then, the mainstream press and the tech companies would be that much stronger at suppressing alternative views. The candidates should be picked quickly, after a proper vetting process, and their work needs to begin now and continue on for the next four years.
I realize this is a pretty radical idea. You all have your own organization goals, objectives, and challenges. But remember, the concept of America was a pretty radical idea at one time and the Founders pulled it off in grand style. I can't think of any other way to beat back the attack on freedom, our lives, and the future of the country and generations that follow us.

America is in a dark place right now: divided, fighting among ourselves, being oppressed by a number of forces inside and outside of the country, and being served by a political class that care only about their long term tenure in office and the resultant self enrichment possibilities that come with “public service.” You all have the unique resources to come together and change the tide of darkness that now exists. I know of no other way or approach that can protect what the Founders created.

Sorry if I ran on a little long but I passionately believe that you and your organizations can make a gigantic positive difference in the future of this country if you work together. Put aside any minor differences you may have on an individual issue, that can be worked out later if we can all rally around the basic human need to be free. As a retired, middle class American I cannot make much of a difference. But I believe you and your organizations can change the world.

Thank you for your time and please continue the great work you do individually but also consider what you could accomplish if you took your talents, resources, and love of liberty into a grand coalition of freedom.

By The Numbers: From New York To California To The Post Office, The Numbers Stink

On a periodic basis we do some posts that fall under the theme of “by the numbers.” Rather than trust what the American political class tells us about reality, we like to examine the real numbers and the real reality in the world to understand what is actually going on.

Relying on politicians, and their cohorts in the media, to tell us what is reality is always a sucker bet. They have their own agendas and goals, usually centering around their needs and self-enrichment. So we need to look at the reality of the numbers to determine what is really going on.

Previous analyses of “by the numbers” can be accessed by entering the phrase in the search box above. This is the first this month where we look at the numbers to truly find out how good, not likely, or bad, most likely, the American political class is doing in managing our tax dollars, protecting our freedoms, and resolving major issues that affect all of us.

1) We have often talked about the reality that California is going through a difficult time, mostly because of boneheaded actions and laws put forth by the state’s political class. Crime is up, homelessness is up, quality of life is down and many residents are moving out. Here are some numbers that generally describe at least part of the situation:
  • Five of the top ten (50%) cities in the country that have the most homeless people living on the cities’ streets are in California even though California accounts for only about 12% of the country’s population.
  • 53% of all of America’s homeless reside in California.
  • 30% of the state's electricity is generated by renewable sources as pushed by the state’s politicians, sources that are not reliable and consistent and which has resulted in planned rolling blackouts across the state.
  • Adding insult to injury, in addition to the rolling blackout reality, state residents pay about 55% more for their electricity than the average across the country.
  • This rolling blackout condition has frustrated residents and businesses alike: California Manufacturers and Technology Assessment Association president, Lance Hastings: “Hot weather and a cloudy day should not be able to shut down the fifth-largest economy in the world.”
  • The state ranks 3rd, trailing only New York and New Jersey, in the number of coronavirus deaths and recently reported a whopping 43,077 new infections of the virus in a single week.
  • As crime skyrockets across the state, mayors of major California cities are cutting police force resources and personnel even though the state currently, before the cuts, has only 2.4 police officers per 1,000 residents, 63% less than the national average.
  • The volume of homeless people in San Francisco has risen 17% between 2017 and 2019.
  • California ranks 48th, third worst, in the country from a regulatory freedom perspective, given the high amount of regulations put forth by the state politicians in all aspects of life.
  • The state has the highest state income top rate in the country, 13.3%, a ridiculously high rate that some politicians want to raise even higher and make the higher tax retroactive back to the beginning of the year.
  • The state has the fifth highest/worst state and individual income tax collections per capita in the country.
  • The state has the sixth highest/worst state and local tax burden in the country.
High taxes but poor quality of life. High electricity rates that are not constant or reliable. High homeless rate with no idea how to fix the problem. The numbers do not lie: California politicians have screwed up what used to be one of the most desirable places to live in the country. As a result, a state that constantly grew in population is now in a population shrinking mode as the numbers and the reality they represent cause more and more state residents to look elsewhere for a better life for themselves and their families.

2) New York state has many of the same problems as California has: high taxes, high homeless population, increasing crime rates. And possibly more importantly, the numbers indicate that state residents may actually be doing the same thing that California residents are doing, moving elsewhere:
  • According to a recent New York Times article, the number of real estate sales closed in the state is down 54% vs. the same time in 2019.
  • This is the largest year over year decline in the state in 30 years.
  • The median selling price is down 17.7% over last year, the largest drop in the past ten years.
The story seems the same in each state: make a place dangerous, expensive, and highly taxed, the numbers will eventually drive people somewhere else.

3) The coronavirus crisis has been terrible for the entire country but especially bad for families who have lost loved ones to the disease. The sad part of this reality is that many of those that died because of the virus may have been spared if governors in number of states, especially New York, had not ordered that elderly real and potential coronavirus patients be housed in the same long care and nursing home facilities as other elderly, and vulnerable, residents.

As a result, the Justice Department is launching an investigation to see if those four states, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, violated Federal law by imposing such a stupid requirement on hospital and care facilities. Letters were sent to those states’ governors stating that an investigation is underway to see if those governors’ actions “may have resulted in the deaths of thousands of elderly nursing home residents” and that actions taken were in violation of Federal law.

The numbers seem to indicate there is a major and despicable failure of these governors’ decisions:
  • Long term care and nursing home facilities house 1% of the U.S. population.
  • Now, these facilities usually house elderly folks and since the virus was especially potent against these types of people, one would not expect to see only 1% of the virus deaths to be the same as the population living in those places.
  • But a whopping 42% of the total country’s virus deaths came from those living in these facilities, 42 times higher than their population percentage.
  • This 42% translates to 70,000 total nursing home-type deaths out of about 170,000 deaths in total nationwide.
  • This is probably a primary reason why New York led the country in virus deaths, 32,000, almost 20% of the nationwide total although the state of New York has nowhere near 20% of the country’s population, and New Jersey was second.
The numbers don't lie: New York, New Jersey and to a lesser extent, Pennsylvania and Michigan politicians, made a set of horrendous virus decisions which were fatal for thousands of Americans.

4) One last, quick set of numbers for today, all related to the Post Office:
  • The postal market is in decline and has been in decline for a long time as person to person electronics communications and other online functions (e.g. bill paying) have driven down mail volumes.
  • This has left the Postal System with a large fixed asset and cost base that has had less and less revenue to support over time.
  • According to Reason magazine, the Post Office has lost a whopping $69 billion in the past 11 years.
  • A large chunk of that, $3.9 billion, happened just in 2018.
  • Its unfunded liabilities was $143 billion at the end of 2018.
  • This unfunded liability is twice the size of its annual, and shrinking, revenue stream.
sanIt is a shame that the numbers don't lie because it is obvious the Post Office is in a financial death spiral and politicians for a long time have known about this coming disaster. And did nothing to fix what the numbers showed so clearly.

Post Office numbers stink, virus numbers are fatal, and New York and California numbers do not paint a pretty picture as they are staring at their own financial and quality of life death spirals. The numbers do not lie.
