Part 1 - California Sinking

We have often argued the case that quite soon a major U.S. city or an entire state government will go bankrupt. The politicians running these entities have imposed heavy tax burdens on their citizens while allowing crime, homelessness, and other quality of life issues to become bigger and bigger problems.

As a result, businesses and residents abandon these cities and states in order to be safer and to  keep more of their wealth away from greedy government bureaucracies. This out migration reduces the tax base, increases the taxes of those that remain, driving more people out of the state, and the financial death spiral is in place.

The top cities likely to go bankrupt, in our minds, are Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City and Chicago. Top states with the chance to go bankrupt include California, Illinois, New York and New Jersey. All of these entities are facing massive budget shortfalls, crime, homelessness, and other problems and untold thousands of their citizens have been moving to other places, taking their tax dollars with them.

Depending on the latest and  lamest actions by their inept politicians, our views on which city and state will go bankrupt first changes month to month.  Last month we thought Chicago would go first given the heavy unfunded liabilities it is facing in the next too distant future. Before that we thought it might be New York City when even its mayor, Eric Adams, commented that the current situation in the city was unsustainable, given the burden of caring for almost 200,000 illegal immigrants.

But now, given the total incompetence of the political class in California, maybe that state and some of its dying cities deserve to be declared bankruptcy race leaders. While the state sinks further and further down the drain, the attitudes and actions of its politicians are inane and ineffective in providing good government and good quality of life for its citizens.

Example Number One -

  • California governor, Gavin Newsom, was recently bragging on how his state was the home to more Fortune 500 companies than any other state.

  • Specifically: "For the first time in 10 years, CA is officially home to the most Fortune 500 companies. More than Texas. More than Florida. 57 incredible and booming companies, right here in the Golden State."

  • That might be good news but in reality in 2022  about 340,000 state residents moved out of the state.

  • Los Angeles, San  Francisco, San Diego and Santa Clara counties each  lost about 40,000 residents on their own.

  • The state’s current population is about 1.2% less than it was in 2019.

  • These latest out migration numbers follow in the reality that the state lost a seat on Congress back in 2020 as a result of its declining population while states like Texas and Florida actually gained a seat.

  • California currently has, by far, the largest homeless population in the country, more than twice as many homeless as New York.

  • Under Newsom’s tenure, the state government went from a $90 billion budget surplus a year  ago to at least a $30 billion shortfall this year.

  • High rates of homelessness, the highest gas and utility prices in the country, and even the worst road conditions in the country are just some of the reasons why people are leaving the state.

Given these realities, maybe bragging about having the most Fortune 500 companies in the country in his state is the only thing that Newsom can brag about.

Example Number 2 -

As most people already know, most politicians have no concept of what sound and wise economic policy is. Be it in Washington or state houses across the country, government economic policies, driven by their politicians, usually make bad economic conditions worse or introduce new economic  problems.

Such is the case where California's politicians recently decided that fast food workers deserved a 25% pay increase and they raised the minimum wage for these folks from $16 an hour to $20 an hour, completely oblivious to the economic downside of this idiocy, as recently noted in the press:

  • Mod Pizza, a pizza chain in the state, recently announced it was closing five locations in california, in all likelihood because of the increase in their wage expense caused by the new $20 an hour minimum wage.

  • The New York Post reported that in just one of those closed locations 15 employees lost their jobs.

  • Employees were told that they got a two day notice of their terminations.

  • They are not the only casualties of the minimum wage hike since some McDonald's locations in the state are charging a ridiculous $18 for a Big Mac in order to cope with the higher minimum wage.

  • We have previously discussed the reality that thousands and thousands of fast food workers, like those that were once employed at Mod Pizza, have also lost their jobs since fast food locations are trying to cope with the higher labor costs in their business.

Well duh, only the politicians did not see this happening: “The good news is that you got a raise, the bad news is that you no longer have a job.” And as prices for fast food go up, those that most frequently patronize these fast food locations, those at the lower end of the economic wage scale will eat out less often, causing further financial difficulty for the fast food locations owners and the economic death  spiral is in place: raised labor costs means higher meal prices which means less sales which means less revenue which means cut more staff, etc.

And thus, California politicians create, rather than resolve, another issue facing their resident.s

Example Number 3

A basic tenet of  government is that government should only exist to do jobs that benefit everyone and can do those jobs most efficiently. Those jobs include such things as a justice system, police, fire and EMT services, sound infrastructure such as roads and bridges, etc. Do these functions right and you have a useful, efficient government operation.

Well, apparently the politicians in Oakland do not have a handle on some of these basic functions. Crime is running rampant in the city: robberies have increased 38% in a year and car thefts have increased 44% in the past year. In fact, one out of every 30 Oakland residents have had their car stolen in the past year.

The high crime rate has driven many businesses out of the city including In-N-Out Burger and the last Denny’s restaurant. Other businesses have closed due to the high crime rate and the  danger to the businesses’ employees.

Also, many city roads are in need of repair. And this brings us to an interesting failed government issue in the city:

  • A street in Oakland is in horrible shape and needs to be replaced and replaced, a typical government function.

  • But this issue is  not going to be resolved anytime soon.

  • The crime in the area of the street that needs to be repaved is so bad that the repaving contractor decided it was too dangerous to send its repaving crew to the area to do the job.

Think about this reality: the street needing repaving was too dangerous for a crew to work on in the middle of the day because crime was too high as was the potential for danger. A very, very basic  tenet of any government entity is to protect the  lives of the people it governs. Obviously, the politicians in Oakland have failed miserably in this area.

Example Number 4

Consider some realities that exist today in the state of California:

  • They are facing a large budget deficit.

  • Crime rates are skyrocketing throughout the state’s cities.

  • Homelessness rates are also sky high.

  • The state’s infrastructure is falling apart.

  • The state is being overwhelmed with untold numbers of illegal immigrants that siphon off taxpayer wealth to pay for the illegal immigrants’ food, shelter and other needs.

  • Residents are taking themselves, their families, their businesses, and  their tax streams out of the state.

  • Gas prices and tax burdens are some of the highest in the country.

  • California public schools are some of the worst in the country.

Lots of problems to work on and a dwindling tax base to provide the support to pay for the solutions.

Consider some other, historical, realities:

  • California was not a participant in the Civil War.

  • No one in California owned slaves back in the day.

  • There were no cotton plantations in the state.

  • There are no surviving slaves from the Civil War living in the state today.

And yet, despite the major problems that face California citizens today, the fact that California had absolutely no part of the civil war and slavery, the state politicians have decided that it would be a good idea to pay reparations to slave relatives that live in the state:

  • The state government’s Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a bill that would create a state agency that would implement the state’s reparations task force recommendations.

  • That task force recommended that eligible black residents of the state, distant relatives of slaves that lived far away in other states, each get the ridiculous sum of $1.2 million.

  • Thus, untold thousands of people could get $1.2 million of taxpayer wealth while the state government has about a $30 billion budget deficit.

Big problems to resolve, but state politicians are focusing on giving away taxpayer wealth to people that were never slaves, people who never picked cotton. If the state government has that much  money lying around, would it not be a better idea to invest that money in inner city schools so that black kids could get a real education vs. what they get today? If it has that much money laying around, how about feeding the hungry or sheltering the homeless in the state? Insanity.

That will do it for today: quite possibly the most inept group of politicians in the country. They create new problems without resolving existing problems, they work on projects that make no sense relative to the major issues facing most of the state’s citizens while at the same time driving residents and businesses out of the state, losing the tax wealth that is leaving with them. Looks like California may have retaken the lead to become the first state government to go bankrupt.

November, 2013 Political Class Insanity, Part 4: Obama Phone Fraud, Alternative Energy Fraud, Outhouse Fraud, and More

This is our fourth post this month in our continuing series on political class insanity. Our first post this month can be viewed at:

http://loathemygovernment.blogspot.com/2013/11/november-2013-poliical-class-insanity.html

Wasteful spending, delusional and unreal views of the world, failing government programs and departments, the list seems endless, especially for the trillions and trillions of dollars taxpayers entrust to the political class every year for very little in return. And the insanity we are talking about does not even touch on the biggest insanity of the year, the unfolding disaster that is Obama care.

1) A recent poll by Pew Research indicates that the public’s trust of the Federal government continues to be very low and trending lower:

  • Only 19% of those Americans surveyed recently by Pew say that they trust the government in Washington to do what is right just about always or most of the time.
  • This low rating is down a whopping down seven points since January.
  • The current measure matches the level reached in August 2011, following the last battle over the debt ceiling.
  • The share of the public saying they are angry at the federal government, which equaled an all-time high in late September (26%), has ticked up to 30%.
  • Another 55% say they are frustrated with the government.
  • Just 12% say they are basically content with the federal government.

A pathetic showing for the Washington political class but a low showing that is certainly justified just based on the nonsense we report in this blog. This evidence alone is a reason for term limits because as the citizenry gather less and less faith and trust in the ability of the government to do the right thing, the ability of the government to do the right thing goes down also. And there is no one in the political spectrum that seems to know how to fix the paranoia.

2) The following insanity is a real doozy. It was documented by Americans for Limited government and their website post came with an extensive set of sources to prove that they were not making this wasteful spending up because without those sources, you would naturally think this spending escapade had to be a joke.

This waste involves the construction of a public restroom facility at the Manassas National Park in Virginia, the sight of Civil War battles:

  • The Federal government has spent over $578,000 to erect a “comfort station,” I.e. restroom, at the Manassas National Park.
  • Yes, $578,00, for a bathroom… in a park.
  • For that amount of money, one would have expected an extensive and comfortable rest room facility with lots of bells and whistles.
  • You could expect that but you would be wrong, as this picture of the meager restroom illustrates your disappointment (click on the photo for a larger view):

  • Not only is it meager and small, it was modular, constructed elsewhere and snapped together on site, certainly less stable than if it had actually been constructed from the ground up on site.
  • By the way, that stone siding is fake stone.
  • The post wonders how far would $578,000 get you toward buying other toilet-rendering facilities in Manassas, VA. The resultant research finds that for $575,0000 you could purchase a large modern house, complete with 4 full bathroom installations, right down the street from the park in Manassas.
  • In traditional and incompetent government fashion, the Federal government paid for a 449-page report on the proposed park restrooms.
  • That effort included an additional 90-page “Environmental Assessment for a Comfort Station at the Brawner Farm.”
  • While the expenditure of over half a million dollars on a prefabricated rest room building is obnoxious and pathetic in itself, the original proposal called for the restroom building to be installed in time to  accommodate the 150th anniversary of the Second Battle of Bull Run to be celebrated in August 2012.
  • However, the restrooms were not opened to the public until September of 2013, missing its installation date by a mere 13 months.

Unnecessarily expensive and too late to serve its intended purpose, sounds about right for a Federal government program. And Harry Reid says every American wants to spend more in taxes to the Federal government. Delusional, especially in light of half a million dollars for a common restroom prefab building.

3) Remember how Obama was going to shut down the terrorist prison at Guantanamo right after he got elected since it was an embarrassment and terrorist recruiting tool? Well, five years after he was elected this is another campaign promise that went unfulfilled. And according to a Washington Examiner article from November 1, 2013, the continued use of that prison costs the American taxpayer almost half a billion dollars, $481 million, just to watch over the remaining 160 prisoners. This comes out to a whopping $3 million a year per prisoner. Unbelievable.

How many more teachers, drug counselors, meals for the homeless, etc. could have been bought for $481 million a year if Obama had actually kept a promise for once?

4) Many times we have reviewed the tens of billions of taxpayer dollars Obama gave out to mostly political allies and cronies in the alternative energy businesses, none of which returned any benefit back to society. Solyndra, Fisker, A123, Abound, Ecotality, Evergreen, Spectra, and many others served only as a sewer drain for taxpayer wealth

Well to add two insults to injury, one of those failure may still cost the American taxpayer a lot of money even though they have gone out of business. Two years after Abound Solar got a large loan guarantee from the American taxpayer via the Federal government, it had to lay off its hundreds of workers and went into bankruptcy proceedings.

The eventual financial damage to the taxpayer was a total of $70 million for backing the failed company. Unsold inventory from the company operations, which should have been used to offset those taxpayer losses, including 2,000 solar panels, mysteriously disappeared, according to the National Legal Policy Center. Thus, even after the company died, its bones could not be picked to help pay back the taxpayers.

Second insult to injury: the company left behind, at its  Longmont, Colo. Facility, 37,000 square feet that is covered with hazardous waste such as cancer causing cadmium, broken glass and contaminated water. The Northern Colorado Business Report  estimated it will cost up to $3.7 million to clean and repair the building so it can again be used. Want to bet the American taxpayer somehow gets stuck with that clean up bill also?

All because this administration thought it was fine to reward political backers with hard earned taxpayer wealth. Despicable.

5) Another day, another Federal agency that is overrun with waste and criminal fraud:

  • The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently released findings where they admit that many people who have received  Obama Phones have misused or defrauded the program.
  • The numbers that the FCC admitted to are staggering: more than two million recipients are believed to have improperly received a phone under the Lifeline program.
  • As a measure of government incompetence, this estimate is almost twice as many as the FCC estimated just last month! Who knows how much more fraud they will admit to next month?
  • In the years between Obama’s first term and second term elections, spending within the program nearly tripled from $819 million to $2.2 billion.
  • While the FCC has implemented a few fraud-fighting tactics, the resultant fines of more than $32 million against mobile providers who knowingly violated the program’s rules is less than 1,5% of the program’s overall cost and certainly not close to the fraud incurred by the two million fraudulent users of the program.
  • $32 million recovered via fines against two million fraudulent phones comes out to only $6 dollars per fraudulent phone identified.
  • More than 40% of those receiving such Obama Phone assistance were unable or unwilling to provide documentation supporting their eligibility, according to an investigation into the largest facilitators of Obama phones. 40% of the total just strolled into the program without any proof of need and walked out with free cellular phones and free cellular service. Disgusting, and just another reason why no American, rich or poor, should pay another penny in taxes while this type of fraud and ineptness exists in Washington.

Expensive phones, expensive outhouses, expensive crony infested alternative energy companies, all failures. And the insanity is not done, more to follow tomorrow.

Political Class Insanity Special Edition, Part 4: Syrian Madness, Quotes and Misquotes

This is our fourth discussion regarding the probably idiotic and insane notion from President Obama and other sin his administration that intervening in the Syrian civil war would be a good idea for America. The previous three discussions/posts laid out the many, many reasons why such a military effort is a very bad idea. Those reasons include, but are not confined to the following:

  • We are not absolutely sure that the Syrian government actually used the poison gas, there are very good reasons and news sources  to believe that the rebel forces used the gas, either intentionally or unintentionally.
  • A limited and narrow military attack, as proposed by the administration, will not remove Assad from the head of the Syrian government and will not deter him or other tyrants from considering the use of poison gas in the future.
  • Over 100,000 Syrians have already been killed as a result of the civil war, the time to act was years ago prior to 100,000 people being needlessly killed. To act now when a relative handful have been killed is way too late to have any positive impact on the ground in Syria.
  • Russia has already pledged to replace any military hardware destroyed by a U.S. attack and is considering giving the Syrians an advanced missile defense system. So again, how is a limited U.S. military strike going to do anything to impede the ability of the Syrian government to wage war on its citizens?

The vast majority of Americans across the political spectrum and across the country do not want to go to war against Syria, no matter how limited that war is promised to be. Most sensible Americans realize that historical U.S. military activity in the Middle East has NEVER ended well so what makes Obama and others think this will be any different.

Other reasons were put forth for not acting militarily starting at the following post:

http://loathemygovernment.blogspot.com/2013/09/political-class-insanity-special.html

Today let’s focus on what people are saying about this disaster waiting to happen, both those in Washington and others outside of Washington who seem to have a better grasp of reality, integrity, and truth telling than those within the Federal government.

1) This fiasco started when President Obama issued a dare/ultimatum to the government of Syria in August, 2012, the now infamous “red line” proclamation: “We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation.”

But just this week the President retreated from this ultimatum, actually claiming that the red line concept was not his, even though he stated it clearly last August: “First of all, I didn’t set a red line. The world set a red line. The world set a red line when governments representing 98% of the world’s population said the use of chemical weapons are [sic] abhorrent and passed a treaty forbidding their use, even when countries are engaged in war.”

Of course you set the red line, Mr. President, you stated it clearly and publicly last year. But we probably should not expect anything different from this President, this individual who would blame anyone else for his shortcomings and the shortcomings of his administration. It was Bush’s fault. It was Congress’ fault. It was the fault of the Japanese tsunami. It was the fault of ATM machines. All of these excuses have been tried by him in the past. This is just another example of him trying to shed blame, impinging his integrity in the process.

So if you are lying about something we are sure you are lying about, how can we trust you and your justifications for going to war when you have lied so many times in the past?

2) Senator John McCain, a big proponent of launching the missiles into Syria, had the following to say relative to the Congressional discussions going on about whether to authorize the President to militarily act: “Now that a resolution is going to be before the Congress of the United States, we want to work to make that resolution something that majorities of the members of both houses could support. A rejection of that, a vote against the resolution by Congress, I think would be catastrophic, because it would undermine the credibility of the United States of America and of the President of the United States. None of us want that.”

Senator, the credibility of the United States is pretty much shot already, given the fact that Obama throw out a dare and then never backed it up with an operational plan.

He did not go to the United Nations to get the world behind his bluff and bluster.

He is trying to get Congress to support him in the eleventh hour, he should have been working the halls of Congress the same day he issued the red line threat a year ago.

Given the opposition by Americans to military action as measured by opinion polls, he certainly did not make his case to the American people.

He did not put diplomatic or economic pressure on Russia, a main Syrian ally, to get the use of chemical weapons made more emphatic to Assad.

He did not make his case to our allies, most of whom understand that military action of the type proposed and the timing are not the right thing to do.

Obama has already done a complete job of killing our credibility as a world leader already, Mr. McCain. Nothing Congress does will make that situation any better. Or have you been too busy playing online poker to notice?

3) No post on quotes would be complete without some factually wrong words out of Nancy Pelosi. Consider her response to a reporters question a few days ago:

Question: If Congress does reject this, can the president proceed if Congress rejects?

Pelosi: I don’t think Congress will reject. But I do want to remind you because the – I’ve been reading some of what some of you have written and say the president has never gone forward if Congress has not approved, when it has taken up the issue. I remind you that in 1999, President Clinton brought us all together, similar to this meeting here, but over a period of time to talk about going into the Balkans and the vote was 213-213, 187 Republicans voted ‘no,’ 180 Democrats voted ‘yes,’ about 30 on each side, something like that, went in a different way than the majority of their party. And that was when the planes were really ready to go into Bosnia [sic]. He went. And you know what happened there. So, I don’t – I don’t think that the congressional authorization is necessary. I do think it’s a good thing. And I hope that we can achieve it.

Pelosi is correct about the House vote, but it occurred five weeks after the military air campaign had already started. Missed the truth on that statement by five weeks, which is pretty good when it comes to the accuracy of her assertions in the past. I bring this up in that it is another case of how and why would we should not trust these people. The President blatantly denies saying something that the we know he said and Pelosi supports her position by just plain saying incorrect things.

4) John Kerry had an interesting time in front of Congress recently when he tried to explain that sending cruise missiles and other military ordinance into Syria is not “war” per se: “We don’t want to go to war in Syria either. It is not what we are here to ask. The President it is not asking you to go to war. He is not asking you to declare war. He is not asking you to send one American troop to war… He is simply saying we need to take an action that can degrade the capacity of a man who has been willing to kill his own people by breaking a nearly 100-year-old prohibition, and will we stand up and be counted to say we won’t do that.”

Sorry, I do not buy it. You cannot declare that blowing up people and things in Syria is not war. If the Syrian government launched a handful of cruise missiles into the United States, you can bet we would call it war. Abraham Lincoln once said:

Question: If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have?

Answer: Four, just because you call a tail a leg does not make it a leg.

This is not an “action” that the President is proposing, cruise missiles are not used in an action, they are only used in war. Again, the credibility of these people to deny reality or lie about reality knows no bounds.

5) By far, the most elegant, most insightful, and most accurate description and advice for the Syrian situation has come from someone outside of political office. Whether liberals and Democrats want to admit it, Sarah Palin had the best advice for not militarily intervening in the Syrian civil war. Her advice: “Let Allah sort it out.”

These people, Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds, and other religious sects have been attacking and killing each other for centuries. Ms. Palin correctly points out that a few cruise missiles fired from a few U.S. warships is not going to change anything within this centuries old quagmire.

6) Finally, let’s close with the views and opinions of Charlie Daniels, long time musician and current Internet blogger. He quite accurately and simply points out why the United States should stay out of the Syrian situation, and does it much more eloquently than the way Obama, Kerry, and others illogically try to justify a military strike.

Best of all, he correctly points out that a slip of a tongue from the President of the United States is the reason we are in this situation and is also a reason not to go forward as Obama would like.

A Citizen's Take on Syria

Charlie Daniels | September 03, 2013 | 11:27

In my soon to be 77 years as a citizen of the United States of America, having lived through Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, the dark days of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Watergate, 9/11 and all the other serious and profound events our beloved nation has been involved in over the last three quarters of a century, I have to say with all sincerity that I have never seen a president as confused, befuddled, impotent, insincere and as out of his depth as Barack Obama has become in dealing with the Syrian issue.

When you're the leader of the free world, you don't make statements you can't back up and you don't draw lines in the sand, watch your enemies cross them with impunity and go off and play a round of golf.

Obama painted himself and the nation into a corner with his “red line” statement and I truly believe he thought he would have unilateral international and domestic support only to find himself standing alone in the spotlight with egg on his face and a ticking political time bomb in his hand.

I don't believe he ever had any intention of going through Congress and only decided to do so when he was left without the support of traditional allies and the disdain of a war weary American public who have begun to feel that America cannot be the international police force who has to bear the brunt of every catastrophe.

I think Obama is taking the vote for military authorization to Congress to bail himself out, to buy some time, somebody to share the blame if all goes wrong. Obama had already positioned war ships. All that was left to do was give the order to fire the missiles and at the 11th hour, after being rejected by the British parliament and put off by the French, he started having second thoughts and reached for the life preserver.

I, for one, am glad that Obama - for whatever reason - political expediency notwithstanding, did not facilitate the missile attack as it would have been largely symbolic and cosmetic and as he had given Assad enough warning to move the weapons out of harms way would have done little if anything to rid the world of chemical weapons.

It's not that I think nothing should be done about weapons of mass destruction no matter where they're used in the world, but I believe it's not just the responsibility of the United States to enforce international law. If the civilized nations of the world shirk this duty, why should they think America should take on the job by itself?

America has done enough "sending signals", symbolic gestures, getting involved in situations that don't threaten our national interests or that of our allies.

America's leaders should guard their tongues well and not issue spur of the moment reactions and empty threats. Our bite should be a lot worse than our bark and a presidential warning should be a dire and solemn caution, issued only once and followed up with swift and decisive action, not some half-baked puff of bravado that nobody really takes seriously.

What little bit of credibility America had in the Middle East just went out the window Friday afternoon, as a president who let his ego overload his common sense backed down from a tin horned dictator of a third world country, or at least that's how it's viewed in that part of the world.

The mettle of a president and the people he surrounds himself with is not proven until push comes to shove. This nation has entered a new phase in the war on terror and our relativity in the rest of the world and the road is going to be long, rocky and dangerous.
It remains to be seen how this embarrassing situation will play out. Will the president seek the council of the more experienced advice available to him in Congress? Or, will he remain defiant and continue to go it alone.

You've cost America a great deal this past week, Mr. President.

How much more can we take?

*********************************

Very well said. This has been a very expensive President when it comes to spending and wasting our nation’s credibility on the world stage. All for very little n return.

Although things might change, this will do it for the current review and analysis of the Syrian situation. If you agree with the points we have made over the past four days, please call your Congressional representatives to vote against any authorization to use military force to intervene in a far away civil war that has no national security impacts on our country, despite what many in the Washington political class will try to sell you.
