May, 2022, Political Class Insanity:, Part 3: Fleeing Oppressive California and Covid Relief For Hitmen, Terrorists, Sexual Predators, and More

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

1) We have often asserted that a very basic desire of most humans is to be free. Free from excessive taxation, free from excessive governmental business and personal regulations, free from the fear of crime and violence, free to live their lives the way they want, to spend their income and time based on their own priorities and income.

And when people cannot fulfill that basic freedom need, they eventually take steps to maximize their freedom. And that reality was recently demonstrated in the state of California:

  • According to the California Department of Finance, the state’s population dropped by 117,552 people in 2021.

  • These results follow up on the 2020 results where about twice that number of people left the state.

  • This is a state that seemingly forever saw annual growth in its state population.

  • 34 out of 58 state counties saw a decrease in population.

  • The three most populated counties, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange county saw substantial population decreases.

  • Only two counties saw population increases greater than 1%.

  • Cities who lost population in the state outnumbered cities that saw population increases by more than a three to one ratio.

Sky high taxes, sky high government regulations, sky high violent crime rates, and a raft of other problems. People want to be free and one way to do that is to leave California for more freedom oriented regions when their own political class cannot provide that freedom they desire.

2)Washington politicians and bureaucrats never ever do anything right, efficient, or effective. And as we have discussed many times, the legislation and implementation of the covid relief programs are no exception to this incompetence:

  • For example, Valesky Barosy received $2.1 million in government covid business loans.

  • He then used that taxpayer wealth to buy a Lamborghini, Rolex and Hublot watches, and designer clothing from high end retailers including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Chanel.

  • He created bogus business expense reports when he applied for $4.2 million in government loans of which the government gave him half the amount he requested.

  • Fortunately, he and his accomplices have been indicted on five counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, and one count of aggravated identity theft.

  • He faces up to 132 years in Federal prison.

The good news is this guy got caught. But the bad news is that the Small Business Administration (SBA) Inspector General found that the SBA may have improperly paid out $3.6 billion in taxpayer wealth to people and businesses who did not deserve it or obtained it fraudulently. The Inspector General found that the SBA did not follow fraud prevention protocols that were designed to prevent this waste.

3) While it seems most of those that have been caught defrauding the government were doing the covid fraud to simply enrich themselves and their lifestyle, Jasmine Martinez had a different purpose in mind when she defrauded a government covid program:

  • Miami police allege that Martinez used her stolen covid relief taxpayer money to put together a plot to murder Le’Shonte Jones and her three year old daughter.

  • The effort was successful in murdering Jones while critically injuring her 3 year old daughter.

  • Specifically: "The suspect, Jasmine Martinez, is now in jail along with two others identified by police as Javon Carter and Romiel Robinson. They are each being held on charges related to the May 3 murder of TSA Agent Le’Shonte Jones and the attempted murder of Jones' 3-year-old daughter, who was injured in the shooting.”

  • Martinez used $10,000 in covid relief money to hire Carter as the hit man for the murder.

  • Apparently Jones was going to be a prosecution witness in a criminal case against Martinez and the two had a long history of antagonism between themselves.

Great, taxpayer money being funneled in to murder plots. Insane.

3) But it is no just those that hire hitmen that can get free taxpayer covid relief money:

  • According to recent findings from a Freedom Of Information filing, IRS records show that 645,000 prison inmates received covid relief money under Biden’s American Rescue Plan in 2021.

  • These 645,000 convicted criminals received $900 million in total.

  • “In one of the most inexplicable votes in Senate history, Senate Democrats sent terrorists and perverts $1,400 checks paid for by U.S. tax dollars. It is a vote that should tick off every American,” NRSC Chairman Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) said.

  • We have previously discussed the disgusting reality that the Boston Marathon bomber received a $1,400 covid relief check in prison.

  • Larry Nassar, a convicted sexual predator that preyed on young college athletes also received taxpayer funds in prison.

  • The really sad part of this fraud is that Senators knew it would happen and yet defeated a move to prevent prisoners from getting taxpayer money.

  • Senator Dick Durbin, a Senator who supported giving money to prisoners, had this sick justification for sending almost a billion dollars to convict prisoners: “Children [of convicts] should not be forced to go hungry because a parent is incarcerated. Relief payments would allow families to replace lost income and pay rent and put food on the table. I would urge my colleagues to understand what we are facing with our criminal justice system today. We need to bring more justice to it and caring for the families of those who are incarcerated.”

I would ask the Senator: a few questions: 1) how many of those convicts who received taxpayer money actually have children who need support? 2) How many of those convicts actually care about their kids if they have them? I would bet that the answer is that the vast majority do not have kids to support or care about their kids. If they cared about their kids they likely would not have involved themselves in criminal activities.

And finally Senator, how much of that $900 millon actually made it out of prions to directly support their kids? If you want to support the kids of convicts, that is fine. But get the money directly to those kids, do not give it to convicts that may not even have kids, do not care about their kids, or who can use the money for their own personal needs.

That $900 million could have fed a lot of hungry and homeless Americans, it could have provided a lot of drug addiction support to drug addicted Americans, none of whom committed crime against other Americans or society. The horrid  priorities of Congressional people never seem to amaze or disgust me.

Politicians continue to fail the country whether at the state level in California or the national level in Washington.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Insanity, Part 6: The Idiocy Of Forgiving Student Loans and Even Her Mom Takes a Powder To Florida To Avoid High Taxes

Over the past few months, New York City Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has established herself as a human gaffe machine. Her inability to do simple math, her outlandish ideas based on an alternative reality, her economic ignorance, and lack of common sense has resulted in an almost daily stream of idiocy, inane comments, and ridiculous ideas that have no basis in reality.

As a result, most of our recent political class insanity posts have almost always had an Ocasio-Cortez piece of insanity. Thus, we have decided to separately track her craziness and idiotic takes on economics, business, government, and whatever else on a regular basis under its own set of posts. She deserves to have a separate effort that captures all of the ridiculousness she espouses.

The original format we were going to use was to start with a set of her original inane ideas and just continue to build on that initial list as time goes by. But after just three summaries of her idiocy and stupid ideas it has become obvious that we cannot continually add to the existing set of ineptness, that list would get too large too quickly.

Thus, each new Ocasio-Cortez post will have only the latest gaffes out of her mouth. To review her previous idiocies just enter her last name in the search box above. The latest post can be accessed at:

Let’s get started:

1) Greg Holt, writing for the Godfather Politics website on March 18, 2019, gave a quick review of some of Ocasio-Cortez’s stupidity and ignorance before going into her latest misreading of reality:
  • She is a Congresswoman who majored in economics in college but does not know the real definition of the unemployment rate.
  • She must have taken business classes if she was an economic major but still had no concept of the economic bonanza that Amazon would have brought to her Congressional district when she helped chase the company away.
  • She thinks Medicaid is a well run operation that is cheaper than private healthcare, radically wrong on both points.
  • She says that Americans should be “excited” about “being automated out of work.”
  • She is pushing a disaster known as the “New Green Deal” which also included getting rid of cows, getting rid of air travel, and giving free money to anyone who decided they did not want to earn money at a job.
  • She totally misread a Pentagon audit report and claimed that the Pentagon had misspent $26 TRILLION over a ten year period even though the TOTAL Pentagon budget over those years was less than half of that.
And now we have the latest idiocy from her. In a recent tweet she said:

Cost of the GOP Tax Scam for the rich: ~$1.8-2.3 Trillion
Cost of forgiving all student loans in America: ~$1.5 Trillion
Clearly where there’s a will, there’s a way.
When people say that there isn’t “enough” to do these things, what they mean is they don’t *want* to do them.

A few things about this idiocy:
  • It is not a tax scam for the rich, these people earned that money, they did not scam it from the poor.
  • Who said letting people get out from debt that they knowingly incurred is a good idea?
  • And by the way Congresswoman, there is not $2.3 TRILLION laying ground that we are giving to the rich, it is money they will not be paying in future taxes.
  • This is the same mistake you made when you thought that the $3 billion that Amazon was getting for moving into your Congressional district was somehow an existing pot of money that could be reallocated to other uses, it is a future reduction in taxes, not a current bucket of taxes.
So ignorant of taxation and life. Twitter users let her know how stupid this concept was:
  • Colin Moriarity: “I made an awful call as a kid, lived on campus, and walked out of NU $60k in debt, all because of private school room & board in a big city.I paid every penny back, with interest, 10 years early. Do I get my debt forgiven, too, or do I get to pay the Taking Responsibility Tax?"
  • Red Tide: “I paid back every dollar of my student loans. It's called taking responsibility for one's debts. It's what grown-ups do.”
  • “Vmf9569: “I agree with 1/2 of this. If you cancel their debt I want my debt canceled. I didnt go to college bc I couldn’t afford it. They did and now you are saying I should pay for their college? Why? Bc debt is hard to pay off? Yes, it is. Get a second and third job like I have.”
  • Am pollitcalnmoderate bol: “It’s the price of education, it’s not easy but it’s a choice people make, it’s not like he was forced to do it. He chose to, forgiving debts is just another way we’ll make people lazy and allow people to get away with horrible financial decisions with no consequences.”
  • Jess: “Yes let’s teach kids that when you borrow money you don’t have to return it. What a great lesson. I paid back all my loans. Sure I had a small amount compared to others but you still borrowed the money. We need to teach these ADULTS life lessons such as this.”
You get the idea. A lot of Americans with integrity worked hard to get an education and to pay for their education. Assuming that those that were not as honest or hardworking or had as much integrity deserved to have their loans paid off by those who actually work for a living is a travesty, which is just about everything that Ocasio-Cortez comes up with or says, a travesty.

2) I always have believed in karma, that anyone who is evil or stupid eventually gets put in their place by karma, Mother Nature, or whatever you want to call it. Ocasio-Cortez seems to think that she and other in Congress are entitled to the hard earned dollars of hard working Americans, that it it is the right of politicians to take as much as they can from an honest earning American.

Most famously she thought it was okay to rape the earnings of American earning over $10 million a year by taxing those dollars at an obscene rate of 70%. Taking 70 cents out of every incremental dollar starts approaching slave wages.

But there is a little karma or irony when you consider a recent article by Daniel J. MItchell from the Townhall website:
  • It has been no surprise that over the past few years many Americans have fled high taxation states like New York, Illinois, and New Jersey for lower taxed states like Florida and Texas.
  • Florida ranks number one in economic freedom from a recent study while New York finishes dead last.
  • The fact that Florida has no state income tax while New York has a very high state income tax rate explains a lot of this difference and why many New Yorkers are leaving the state in droves.
  • And this is where the karma and irony comes into play since, according to the New York Post, Ocasio-Cortez’s mother, despite her daughter’s call for higher and higher taxes, has actually moved out of New York to Florida to, wait for it, to avoid high taxation.
  • Specifically: “I was paying $10,000 a year in real estate taxes up north. I’m paying $600 a year in Florida. It’s stress-free down here,” Blanca Ocasio-Cortez told the Daily Mail.
  • Former Florida Rick Scott and current Florida Senator laid it out for Ocasio-Cortez: “The elites in New York and Washington should commission a study of Florida to see what happens when conservative ideas are put into practice. …Florida’s economy is thriving, expanding at a record pace. …There’s a reason Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s mom left New York for Florida. And there’s a reason companies are fleeing high-tax states, bringing jobs with them to Florida.”
So even though Ocasio-Cortez’s mother gets it, i.e. that there is no political freedom without economic freedom which is why she is looking to reduce her tax burden, the Congresswoman does not get it, always wanting to raise taxes for stupid, inane ideas. Listen to mom, Alexandria, she is a lot wiser than you have shown yourself to be.

That will do it for now. Her mother understands, freedom, responsibility, and America as does those hard working Americans who worked hard to get educated and worked hard to pay off their rightful debt, three concepts that are foreign to Ocasio-Cortez.

Business Friendly States Vs. Unfriendly State Politicians

Through no effort of my own, I somehow got on Florida Governor Rick Scott's email mailing list. I usually just dump it immediately but an email I received today caught my eye. The email claimed that Florida was voted the second best state to do business in (Texas was first). I went on explore this claim and came across the following interesting statistics and situations from a variety of sources:

- Chief Executive Magazine did indeed rank Florida as the second best state to do business in. They attributed this business friendly status to business and tax reforms put forth by the state.

- Scott attributes this friendly business atmosphere identified by the magazine as helping Florida add 140,000 private sector jobs to its state economy over the past year.

- The ten best states for business are:

  1. Texas
  2. Florida
  3. North Carolina
  4. Tennessee
  5. Indiana
  6. Virginia
  7. South Carolina
  8. Georgia
  9. Utah
  10. Arizona
Nine out of the ten of these states have Republican governors.

The ten worst states for business are:

  1. California
  2. New York
  3. Illinois
  4. Massachusetts
  5. Michigan
  6. New Jersey
  7. Connecticut
  8. Pennsylvania
  9. Oregon
  10. Hawaii

Seven of these ten have Democratic governors and I know from personal experience that New Jersey politics have long been dominated by Democrats in the state government.

- If I look at Bureau Of Labor Statistics results and take the arithmetic average of the ten best states to do business in, the latest average unemployment rate is 7.97%, below the national average.

- If I take the arithmetic average of the ten worst states to do business in, the latest average unemployment rate is 8.25%, above the national average.

- According to the Chief Executive Magazine findings, Texas and Florida had the largest net population migration into their states over the past ten years or so while New York and California combined had a net migration out of their states of over three million people in the same time frame.

- Florida's unemployment rate has come down by over two percentage points in the past year, better than just about every other state and better than the national average while the Texas unemployment rate has consistently remained below the national average throughout the past five years.

- Scott points out in this email, information that has been published in other, non-biased communications vehicles, that the last Florida state budget that was approved was balanced by not raising taxes but was also able to increase k-12 education funding by $1 billion.

- As a Florida resident, I pay no income tax at all, the state sales tax is 7% which is the same rate I paid in my former state (New Jersey) and my Florida property taxes have come down every year for the past five years.

- Despite all of this good tax news, Florida schools have improved considerably over the past five years even though historically they were among the worst. Florida has 13 of the top ranked 100 U.S. high schools as measured by U.S. News and World Report and other sources have also reported how much the schools have improved
(http://www.tampabay.com/news/education/article960721.ece), the state government increased school funding by a billion dollars in the latest budget, and state crime levels are at their lowest rate since statistics first started being kept in 1971 (http://www.clickorlando.com/news/FDLE-Florida-crime-rate-dipped-slightly-in-2011/-/1637132/12244340/-/k3jfsy/-/index.html).

So what have learned from all of these statistics:
  1. The cost of government, and the associated taxes, has gone down in Florida while the quality of life and government services (e.g. education, law enforcement, etc.) has improved.
  2. Republican led states tend to have better environments for business, which should lead to better lives and employment opportunities for state citizens.
  3. Democratic led states tend to have worse environments for business, which should lead to lesser lives and employment opportunities for state citizens.
  4. The best states for business have an average unemployment rate that is less than the unemployment rate in the worst states for businesses.
  5. Republican led states tend to grow in population while Democratic led states tend to shrink in population.
Seems like some states have figured out how to oversee an economy that grows the population, keeps the tax burden under control, implements efficient and effective basic government services, and provides a business environment that grow the private sector of the economy. Unfortunately, Obama and the rest of the Washington political class have been unable to learn these simple lessons.

Where well run states keep taxes under control, Washington wants to constantly raise taxes and fees.

Where well run states support a productive business environment, Washington keeps generating hundreds and hundreds of new and unneeded regulations every year, which inhibit economic growth and add to the uncertainty of business planning and expansion.

Where well run states provide valued services to its citizens in an economic manner, Washington programs never seem to attain their goals while wasting trillions of dollars of wealth in the process.

Many states could teach Washington how to operate effectively and efficiently. Unfortunately, it appears most of the politicians in Washington are drop outs when it comes to being schooled by the top state governments.

One State Poltician Making The Right Moves, Having The Right Priorities - Florida Governor Rick Scott

As a current resident of Florida, I am acutely aware of the economic problems facing the entire country. Florida's economy had long been heavily dependent on the construction industry and when the Florida housing industry cratered several years ago, the construction industry, along with the subsidiary industries that serve that industry, real estate agents, title search companies, etc., also suffered a significant downturn. This resulted in anemic state economic growth and an unemployment rate that has been consistently higher than the rest of the country.

Thus, the economic situation facing members of the Florida political class is probably worse than the economic challenges facing most state and local governments and politicians across the nation. But all is not lost in Florida, which has taken a different path in managing their financial plight than the state of Illinois.

As you recall from our Illinois post last week, the Illinois state government has also been having dire financial problems and billion dollar shortfalls in their state budget. Their primary approach to trying to resolve their government budget problem was to significantly raise personal and business income taxes early in 2011 rather than aggressively reducing state government spending.

As 2011 winds down, it has become apparent that raising taxes on Illinois businesses was probably a big mistake. Large businesses such as Motorola, Sears, and other companies have threatened to leave the state of Illinois, taking thousands and thousands of jobs with them. This has resulted in the state government providing tax reduction deals to these corporations to keep the companies and their jobs within the state of Illinois.

Thus, a year after raising business taxes, the state has just turned around and given back the raised tax revenue to businesses, leaving the state government about in the same state it was in as 2011 began: continued out-of-control state government spending and budget deficits. A year lost and the budget in worse shape. Not a good strategy.

As a result of this muddled approach, the unemployment rate in Illinois has dropped about 11% in the past two years (from a high of 11.2% to 10.0%) but the national unemployment rate has dropped 15% (from a high of 10.1% to 8.6%) in the rest of the country. Thus, Illinois is not recovering as quickly from an economic perspective, as measured by the unemployment rate, than the rest of the country. One possible reason for this less than average economic improvement is that the state political class is trying to solve the budget problem by raising taxes and not reducing government spending.

The state of Florida has tried the opposite approach, keeping taxes and tax rates unchanged, cleaning up government waste and fraud, and reprioritizing state budget priorities to be more focused on serving citizens and not special interests. Consider two indicators of improving economic health, one global and one local:
  • Globally, the state unemployment rate is down 17% (from a high of 12.0% to 10.0%), beating out both the Illinois unemployment performance (11% drop) and the national performance (15% drop).
  • This improvement has occurred even though one of the state's main economic drivers, the construction industry, is still in a deep economic rut.
  • Locally, although the state economy has been lousy for the past three years, my home's property taxes have decreased every year since we moved to Florida in 2005, dropping about 37% over that time frame.
  • Thus, using my sample size of one, the state political class in Florida has reduced my property taxes in really tough economic times but has kept most state and local government services functioning. Teachers are still teaching, police and fire are still protecting, libraries are still open, roads are still viable and being fixed, etc.
Credit for this performance, globally and locally, has to go to the state political class, our former governor, Charlie Crist, and our current governor, Rick Scott. How Rick Scott is effectively addressing and improving the state's economic woes was summarized in an article from the Daytona Beach News Journal on December 12, 2011:
  • The governor's budget proposal next year intends to cut government spending significantly by reducing the state government staff by about 4,500 unneeded jobs.
  • He also has a plan to slash out-of-control Medicaid spending in a measured, fair, and intelligent manner.
  • The reason to boldly attack Medicaid spending is that the state of Florida is now spending 180% more on Medicaid today than it spent in 2000 while the state revenue has only gone up 30% in that same time frame, making Medicaid a larger and more unacceptable, and unsustainable, percentage of the overall state budget.
  • The article notes how this reduction needs to be done carefully in order to keep overall health care costs and spending down in the state without cutting health care coverage and concludes that Scott is approaching this problem in the right way.
  • But the governor is showing some courage, courage that is certainly lacking in Washington relative to runaway Medicare and Medicaid costs, a courageous stance that the article recognizes that is sorely needed: "Lawmakers may have different ideas about the program, but they all must face up to the budget challenge it poses. The education budget will be in constant peril if the state doesn't find ways to get Medicaid costs under control."
  • Scott has proposed ways to cut back prison costs in the state as another logical and smart way to save money since the state crime rate has been decreasing and with that decrease, the prison population has shrunk.
  • The governor has been praised by starting to demand detailed accountability for state spending by each state government department, requiring departmental "'fully accountable' budgets to show how money is spent, what service is provided and what is accomplished."
  • In the face of budget pressures and shortfalls, the governor's budget proposes over $1 billion more to the state budget for use in Florida public schools, an investment that will directly serve the vast majority of Florida families.
  • There are also no changes to state support for higher education funding despite an overall state budget crisis.
  • In the face of these changes, the governor is calling for no increases in taxes, a wise move given the disaster that happened when Illinois significantly raised taxes. This "no tax increase" position is also supported by the newspaper article's writer: "Now is not the time to raise taxes -- not when the economic recovery is fragile and growth still is relatively slow."

So let's reivew:
  1. The Florida state economy seems to be improving quicker than the national economy and the economy of at least one state (Illinois), a state that  incorrectly decided that raising taxes on state businesses and residents was a better way to close budget gaps caused by out-of-control polticial class and government than reducing spending.
  2. The Florida governor is not raising taxes, taking the more effective and prudent approach of cleaning up waste and fraud in government spending by reducing prison system costs, shrinking the state payroll of unneeded jobs, and reining in excessive Medicaid costs.
  3. The governor is showing tremdendous political courage by addressing a runaway Medicaid expense and cost stream that will eventually bankrupt the state if not boldy addressed now.
  4. In the face of a short term Florida state government budget shortfalls, the governor is not sacrificing the long term eocnomic health of the state by increasing investment in Floirda public schools.
  5. The governor is requiring state government functions to be fully responsible and accountable for the taxpayer money they spend, an effort sure to reduce unneeded and unwarranted government spending, both long term and short term.
As we have said many times in this blog, fixing the major issues that have faced this country for decades should not be this hard to resolve. All it requires of our political class is a little courage, a little unselfishness, a little hard work, and a little creativity. Govenor Rick Scott is being successful with these attributes. Too bad that the Washington polticial class has none of these same qualities.
