March, 2016, Part 2, By The Numbers: Bad Economic Management, Bad Immigration Management, and More

On a periodic basis we do some posts that fall under the theme of “by the numbers.” Rather than trust what the American political tells us about reality, we like to examine the real numbers and the real reality in the world to understand what is actually going on. Relying on politicians, and their cohorts in the media, to tell us what is reality is always a sucker bet. They have their own agendas and goals, usually centering around their needs and self-enrichment. So we need to look at the reality of the numbers to determine what is really going on.

Previous analyses of “by the numbers” can be accessed by entering the phrase in the search box above. This is the third and final post this month where we look at the numbers to truly find out how good, not likely, or bad, most likely, the American political class is doing in managing our tax dollars, protecting our freedoms, and resolving major issues that affect all of us.

1) Although Obama might claim he did a great job managing the economy, Stephen Rowe, writing for the website www.hypeline.org, throws a lot of cold water on that false claim:
  • Americans receiving food assistance every month from the Federal government have exceeded 45 million for 56 straight months.
  • The latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that 45,188,655 Americans were receiving food assistance in December, 2015, down from 265,216 in November, 2015.
  • When food assistance tracking began in 1969, the average number of Americans in the program was just under 2.9 million.
  • That 2.9 million has grown 1,470% since then even though the U.S. population since that time has grown nowhere near that fast.
  • Today, the food assistance Federal program costs American taxpayers $5.73 billion a month.
Either the food assistance program run by the Obama administration is the most corrupt and inefficient program ever or the economy still really stinks, the numbers show that something is foul in the food assistance program.

2) Obama also claims that his administration has done a great job in enforcing the nation’s immigration laws. This is an almost laughable claim, at least according to the numbers of illegal immigrants currently in the country. Paul Bedard, writing for the Washington Examiner on March 7, 2016, quantified the problem with his claim:
  • There is a record 61 million immigrants living in the U.S. today.
  • A whopping 25% of them, 15.7 million, are here illegally.
  • The 15.7 million estimate, this one from the Center For Immigration Studies, is one of the highest estimates ever.
  • Their analysis was based on researching the latest 2015 Census information.
  • Immigrants are now 18.9% of the nation’s total population, up from 6.6% in 1970.
  • Steven Camarota, the Center For immigration Studies, raises a very valid question and issue based on the latest immigration numbers: "These numbers raise profound questions that are seldom even asked: What number of immigrants can be assimilated? What is the absorption capacity of our schools, health care system, infrastructure, and labor market? What is the effect on the environment and quality of life from significantly increasing the nation's population density? "With 45 million legal immigrants and their young children already here, does it make sense to continue admitting more than one million new legal permanent immigrants every year?"
  • In 1970, there was one immigrant for every 15 native Americans.
  • In 2015, there was one immigrant for every five native Americans.
This is what the immigration debate should be based on, 1) the number of illegal immigrants in the country and how to handle them and 2) is there a functional limit on how many more immigrants, legal and illegal, the country handle?

3) Obama also likes to claim that he “saved” the country’s economy. He seems to forget or ignore a few basic numbers:
  • Over 14 million Americans who want full time work still cannot find it, settling for part time work or not able to find any work.
  • The labor participation rate has been lingering at 40 year lows, not good news.
  • Over 90 million adults are no longer in the labor force, record highs.
  • Household wages and income has been stagnant despite being years removed from the recession.
  • The unemployment rate of minorities and younger Americans continue to significantly exceed the unemployment rate of whites.
  • Annual national economic growth during the Obama recovery has not come close to the long term historical annual growth rates.
Now, his supporters often claim that the Obama and administration has created a lot of new jobs since the recession ended. But the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics monthly results, for February, 2016, show how weak these created jobs are. The latest job creation numbers include the following results:
  • Mining -18,000
  • Manufacturing -16,000
  • Trucking -5,000
  • Finance +6,000
  • Leisure and hospitality +48,000
  • Retail trade +55,000
  • Education and health +86,000
Thus, higher paying jobs, e.g. mining, manufacturing, trucking, and even finance, show minimal or negative job growth in February. Lower paying jobs and industries, e.g. retail and leisure, saw much higher job growth. So even when Obama has good economic news it is bad economic news, according to the job numbers.

4) The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) recently put forth its latest view of the Federal government’s budgeting and debt performance and as always, it is not good as the Washington political and the Obama administration continue to spend like drunken sailors, adding trillions of dollars to the country’s debt burden:

  • The rate and cost of government spending, if not changed, will grow much faster than the overall economy, putting even more financial pressure on an ever growing national debt.
  • For example, Federal government spending will grow by 6% this year, almost three times faster than the overall economy.
  • A huge portion of this growth is solely due to Social Security payment increases as Baby Boomers retire.
  • Social Security is now on sixth of the entire Federal government’s mandatory spending budget, a massive wealth redistribution scheme from the young to the old.
  • The 2016 Federal budget is about $3.9 TRILLION, an incredible $11 billion a DAY!
  • The Federal deficit for 2016 is projected to be a whopping $544 billion. That is nearly 3 percent of GDP, making this the first time since 2009 that the deficit has risen in relation to the size of the economy.
  • Much like during the Obama administration, unless Washington changes the growth in spending trend, upwards of $10 TRILLION more dollars will be added to the national debt in the next ten years, assuming that the country does not go bankrupt long before then, a large probability.
  • This increase in annual deficits and national debt will drive the amount of debt held by the public to 86% of GDP within 10 years, the highest level since World War II:

  • Note how the debt percentage has skyrocketed since Obama came into office and proceeded to run up trillion dollar deficits for four years in a row.
Despite the government spending more and more every year, way beyond its means and revenue stream, the economy has staggered, food assistance levels are up to over 45 million a month, wages and household incomes have flatlined and job growth has been tepid and in the wrong kind of industries, the kind that do not provide solid middle class life styles. So as we have always said, we continue to add trillions of dollars to our national debt and have nothing to show for it in return except the every growing possibility of insolvency and financial collapse, the CBO numbers do not lie.Bad economic management, bad immigration management, and bad food assistance management. Bad, bad, bad, the numbers prove the point over and over. More numbers next month.

March, 2016, By The Numbers, Part 1: Gitmo Disconnect, Wasting Money In Mexico, FOIA Stonewalling and More

1) The Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) was passed several decades ago and was one of the few good pieces of legislation passed over those decades. The law requires the Federal government bureaucracy to make a thorough, good faith search of Federal records whenever a private citizen or organizations submits a formal FOIA request.

Those records would then be presented to the whoever requested the records, assuming that those records do not contain personal information or threaten national security. This is a checkpoint on runaway government to protect the rights of citizens and ensure that government entities and workers are complying with existing laws.

Fast forward ahead to present time and recall that President Obama promised the country that he would operate “the most transparent” Presidential administration ever. Great promise, we, the citizens, would be able to easily see what hanky panky was going on within the Federal government because the head of the Federal government, Obama, promised that we would be able to see everything going on.

But alas, like most, if not all, Obama promises, this one was also a lie. According to the Associated Press:

  • In 2015, the Obama administration set a record for the number of times that Federal employees claimed they could not find the records that journalists, citizens, and others requested via the FOIA.
  • In more than one out of six requests, the government searchers said nothing could be found that related to the FOIA request.
  • This translates to 129,825 times that the Feds said nothing, not a single page or record in the entire Federal bureaucracy, existed related to the search requested.
  • The results across different Federal agencies were quite different and disturbing: the FBI could not find any records 39% of the time, the EPA office that covers New York and New Jersey could not find anything an amazing 58% of the time, and the U.U. Customs and Border Protection could not fulfill requests 34% of the time.

The obvious conclusion is that the government is hiding a lot of stuff. Defenders of the Obama administration could counter that assumption by claiming that 1) there are a lot more requests so that the number of empty searches would go up as a result of more searches being requested or 2) the latest searches are looking for stuff that really does not exist.

However, the following paragraph from the Associated Press report destroys those two rebuttal points [my emphasis added]:

In some high-profile instances, usually after news organizations filed expensive federal lawsuits, the Obama administration found tens of thousands of pages after it previously said it couldn't find any. The website Gawker sued the State Department last year after it said it couldn't find any emails that Philippe Reines, an aide to Hillary Clinton and former deputy assistant secretary of state, had sent to journalists. After the lawsuit, the agency said it found 90,000 documents about correspondence between Reines and reporters.

This is called stonewalling, it is illegal under the FOIA legislation and is typical of the corruption within this administration.

2) As we have reported many times in this blog, the city of Chicago has some of the toughest, most restrictive gun laws in this country. And yet, the southern part of Chicago is so violent that it gives the whole city the distinction of being one of the most violent cities in the country and the world. Consider the latest tally of violence from Chicago as reported by AWR Hawkins, writing for the Breitbart website:

  • Between Thursday morning and 6:29 the following Friday morning of a recent week, about 24 hours, 21 people in Chicago were shot, one was stabbed and one died.
  • The one person who died died as a result of a gun shot, an incident that also saw two people wounded.
  • There were 8 separate shooting incidents within that 24 hour period.
  • On March 9, Breitbart also reported that 21 people in Chicago had been shot including two who died inside of a 20 hour window of time.
  • The Chicago Tribune reported on February 22, 2016 that the Chicago homicide rate was up about 100% over the same time period in 2015.
This violence happens in Chicago even though the city has a violence tax that raises the price of every gun and bullet sold at retail in the city, it limits the number of gun stores and the locations of those stores, and the New York Times says that Chicago handgun restrictions allow Chicago politicians to “get as close as they could get legally to a ban without a ban.”

The numbers do not lie, tougher gun control laws do not reduce violent crime. If they did, Chicago would not be what it is today from a homicide and assault perspective. Maybe another approach to violent crime is in order, the numbers prove the current approach does not work.

3) The lead laden water coming out of the water pipes of homes in Flint, Michigan has been national news for the past couple of months. As most people know, having lead leach into tap water can cause a number of serious health conditions including brain damage. It is a serious condition.

While Flint has gotten all of the publicity about bad pipes, a recent USAToday article pointed out that Flint is just one of thousands of water systems throughout the country that have problems with lead in the water. Their investigation found that an amazing 2,000 or so water systems in the country were tested and showed that their pipes were carrying lead contaminated water.

These water systems and their lead contaminated water is serving 6 million Americans and 350 of those water systems provide water to schools and daycare centers. A Maine elementary school’s water system had lead levels 42 times higher than the EPA limit. A Pennsylvania school’s water was 14 times higher than allowed under EPA guidelines. A New York state school’s water had so much lead that it was pushing the bounds of being classified as “hazardous waste.”

Part of a central function of government should be to protect the safety and well being of citizens that fund that government via taxation. As with everything else that the American political class touches, this is just another example where American taxpayers have paid trillions of dollars in taxes and have been stuck with not only a $19 TRILLION national debt by today’s politicians but we have nothing to show for our tax dollars in return: our bridges are crumbling, our roads are falling apart and we now know that our water systems might be poisoning us, water systems managed by and neglected by the politicians in this country today.

4) And while across the country, Americans are being served by substandard safety processes by their water systems, Washington politicians continue to waste money on themselves while infrastructure needs like clean water go wanting. Consider the cost of a recent ONE DAY trip Vice President Joe Biden made to Mexico City, according to reporting by Elizabeth Harrington of the Washington Free Beacon:

  • Just the cost of the hotel accommodations for the Vice President’s trip was over $500,000. Did I mention this was a ONE DAY trip?
  • Biden and his entourage stayed at the luxury International Presidente Hotel.
  • The trip entailed the American taxpayer paying for 260 rooms and meeting areas with a total hotel tab of $538,528.65. Did I mention that this was a ONE DAY trip?
  • This comes out to an average cost of over $2,000 per room.
  • The State Department tried to justify the outrageous expense due to last minute changes to the itineraries, which was the fault of, you guessed it, the State Department. How many last minute changes to the itineraries could there have been, it was a ONE DAY trip?
  • The hotel where Biden’s entourage stayed is described as a "luxury hotel tower with sweeping city views," the hotel has "world class" rain showers, blackout blinds, spa treatment availability, steam bathing facilities, massages, body scrubs, body wraps, foot reflexology, manicures, and waxing, in other words, this is not a Red Roof Inn.
  • As the article points out, this was just for the hotel rooms. It does not include transportation, security, and other costs for a ONE DAY meeting.
The numbers show a pathetic waste of taxpayer money and so many unanswered questions: why so many people for a one day trip, was this one day trip really necessary, why such a high cost, why couldn’t some people stay at the U.S. Embassy compound to save money, and most importantly, what did this ONE DAY meeting accomplish? According to the article, it probably accomplished nothing since no one from either government claimed it accomplished anything. Pathetic.

5) So how has the economy treated African-Americans over seven years into the first African-American Presidency. According to an article from the Seattle Times that was summarized in the March 11, 2016 issue of The Week magazine, while the U3 unemployment rate for white Americans is 4.3%, the U3 unemployment rate for African-Americans is more than double, 8.8%

In fact, the state with the lowest African-American unemployment rate, Virginia, where it is 6.7%, is equal to the state with the highest white unemployment rate, West Virginia. So much for “hope and change” changing the economic plight of the African-American community, nowhere in the numbers is that true.

6) According to a recent YouGov poll, as reported in the March 11, 2016 issue of The Week magazine, 56% of Americans want the terrorist prison at Guantanamo to stay open, 26% want to see it closed, and 18% remain unsure. Just another example where many people in Washington, especially the President, continue to be out of touch with what Americans want and value.

Another set of numbers that show how the American political class has failed the American public. Ignoring our priorities on terrorists, failed economic programs especially for African-Americans, wasting our tax money on Mexican luxury hotels, not protecting us from lead laden water, etc. More bad numbers tomorrow.

The Political Climate of Hate and Hostility that Obama, Not Trump, Created in America, Part 2

At end of December, 2015, we did four posts in which I discussed the very bad memories I will have from the first seven years of Obama’s Presidency. They ranged from failed programs to out of control spending to outright lawbreaking. The first of those four posts can be seen at:

http://loathemygovernment.blogspot.com/2015/12/the-obama-era-part-1-memories-from.html

But two months later I realized that those four posts came up short. I needed another two posts to cover all of the bad memories and failings of what I consider the worst Presidency of my lifetime. The first of those two posts can be seen at:

http://loathemygovernment.blogspot.com/2016/02/the-obama-era-part-5-memories-from.html

But recent events lead me to do another post on this theme, the bad memories of a bad Presidency. Last week Donald Trump had to cancel a campaign rally in Chicago because people opposed to his Presidential run threatened violence and disturbances. Trump heeded the advice of law enforcement and cancelled the rally.

This led Obama to criticize Trump and his rhetoric and accuse Trump of causing the unrest, which of course is totally false. The unrest was caused by professional civil disturbers and unpatriotic Americans who wanted to disrupt and prevent the expression of First Amendment rights of people who had a different opinion than theirs.

But I found it so ironic and ignorant of this President accusing someone else of having hateful rhetoric. This President, numerous times, as you will see below, has been either a major instigator of violent rhetoric or stood by and gave his tacit and implicit approval of violent political rhetoric directed at ordinary Americans who had a difference of opinion relative to his policies. Him accusing Trump of violent rhetoric is so hypocritical as to be pathetic.

Yesterday, we did the first part of our review of how Obama rhetoric has made hate and violence more likely in this country. We reviewed how he called those that had a difference of opinion from his opinion “enemies that needed to be punished,” told his supporters to get in the face of his political enemies, to bring a gun to a brawl, to get out of the way, and remained silent when his supporters called female supporters of other politicians whores, bitches, c***s, etc.

So let’s see what this “non-violent” President has said or implicitly approved of in the past when it comes to violent oratory:

1) Our first example today involves Obama trying to talk tough but certainly not being Presidential or mature. Early in his Presidency, we suffered through almost ninety days of a Gulf oil spin out of a BP offshore oil drilling platform. Obama was accused of being too timid and uninvolved in leading the country and the Federal government to a solution to the oil spill. The reality that he took several vacations and made several cross country political fund raising trips probably had a lot to do with his bad image.

But then he struck out at those critics and his seemingly passivity: "I don't sit around talking to experts because this is a college seminar. We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers, so I know whose ass to kick."

Really, “whose ass to kick?” How un-Presidential is this type of rhetoric? While it was not directed against a political opponent, a President saying it is okay to kick someone’s ass cannot help but contribute to the overall level of hostility in this country if the leader is looking to kick someone’s ass. Oh, and by the way, I do not believe he actually did kick someone’s ass so not only did his position contribute to the overall level of hostility in the country but no one even felt his wrath and got fired or demoted for not doing their job.

2) Consider the following President Obama remark from the past: “After all, there were thousands of so-called campus radicals, most of them white and tenured and happily tolerant. No, it remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names." Prove what side you are on, strike out, take names, all of which are code words for “it is us against them,” certainly a way to encourage violence and retaliation against those that disagree with us.

3) A quote from Obama’s first Presidential campaign: “And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." Interpretation: Americans who are not like us are pathetic, they are bitter little people who, unlike us, pitifully cling to their guns and religion, that is all they have to show for their lives.

4) “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Let’s belittle and demean Americans who have worked hard to be successful and contributing members of society, let’s cut them down to size by demeaning their efforts to be successful by trying to tell the world that only the government can claim success for anyone’s life accomplishments.

5) But this President was not always so explicit in his violent and divisive rhetoric. Sometimes he stood silently by as his political allies put forth the violent rhetoric that he now accuses Trump of using:

  • When White House czar Van Jones called all Republicans a**h***s, Obama was silent.
  • When Louis Farrakhan said in Miami last year that the time has come for 10,000 black volunteers to step forward to kill white Americans, Obama was silent.
  • When Democrat Alan Grayson called all Republicans knuckle dragging Neanderthals, Obama was silent.
  • When union boss and Democratic supporter Jimmy Hoffa, Jr. stated that his union was at war with the Republicans and Tea Party and that those people "need to be taken out," Obama was silent.
  • When Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Walters said ordinary American citizens can go to hell simply for having a difference of opinion with her, Obama was silent.
  • When liberal Elizabeth Ashack, an economist at the Department of Labor, said that all Christians are Nazis, Obama was silent.
  • When HBO TV host Bill Maher, a major donor to Obama’s 2012 Presidential Super PAC, said on air that Republican Sarah Palin “would f*** Rick Perry if he was black,” Obama was silent.
  • When Maher called Republican Sarah Palin disgusting and derogatory female anatomical names that I will not repeat here, Obama was silent.

When members of your political party, your financial backers, or Federal employees are calling for the death of political opponents, call them disgusting names, wish they would go to hell, etc., and as President of the United States, someone who is supposed to represent ALL Americans, remains silent, it is just as bad as if he himself had verbalized the same slurs and disgusting rhetoric.

So Mr. President, please do one of two things:

  • If you think that Trump is promoting violence and divisiveness in this country, than please step up and be a leader for once and tell EVERYONE in the country to start discussing issues and drop the hateful rhetoric which is preventing the country from discussing solutions to those major issues. In other words, stop acting like a community organizer who only wants his side to win and finally start acting Presidential that represents every American and wants what is best for EVERY American.
  • If you cannot act Presidential, than please just be quiet because the violence and angry rhetoric and bitterness in this country is an environment that you were a major contributor to with both your nasty comments and your silence in the presence of nasty comments on behalf of your political allies.

The Political Climate of Hate and Hostility that Obama, Not Trump, Created in America

At end of December, 2015, we did four posts in which I discussed the very bad memories I will have from the first seven years of Obama’s Presidency. They ranged from failed programs to out of control spending to outright lawbreaking. The first of those four posts can be seen at:

But two months later I realized that those four posts came up short. I needed another two posts to cover all of the bad memories and failings of what I consider the worst Presidency of my lifetime. The first of those two posts can be seen at:

But recent events lead me to do another post on this theme, the bad memories of a bad Presidency. Last week Donald Trump had to cancel a campaign rally in Chicago because people opposed to his Presidential run threatened violence and disturbances. Trump heeded the advice of law enforcement and cancelled the rally.

This led Obama to criticize Trump and his rhetoric and accuse Trumpo of causing the unrest, which of course is totally false.

So let’s see what this “non-violent” President has said or implicitly approved of in the past when it comes to violent oratory:

1) Politico reported during Obama’s 2008 Presidential campaign against McCain that Obama said the following during a campaign event in Philadelphia: “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun. Because from what I understand, folks in Philly like a good brawl. I’ve seen Eagles fans.” So, don’t like someone else’s position on an issue? Make sure that you get into a brawl with that person and make sure you are more heavily armed. A little violent Mr. President? Guns, knives, brawls?

The fact that Black Panthers patrolled outside of polling stations in Philadelphia during Presidential voting in 2008 may have been a result of Obama’s inciting a brawl to his supporters in Philly.

2) In another campaign stop in 2008, Obama incited his followers with following obnoxious and aggressive rhetoric: “I need you to go out and talk to your friends, talk to your neighbors...I want you to argue with them, get in their faces...you guys are the ones who can make the change." “Get in their faces,” sounds a lot aggressive and violent to me.

3) Remember when Obama told his supporters that “we need to punish our enemies”: "If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, 'We're gonna punish our enemies, and we're gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us' -- if they don't see that kind of upsurge in voting in this election -- then I think it's going to be harder. And that's why I think it's so important that people focus on voting on November 2nd….“Those aren’t the kinds of folks who represent our core American values.”

Let me interpret:
  • Political enemies need to be destroyed.
  • We will reign supreme and take care of those that helped vanquish our enemies.
  • Those that disagree with us do not matter, they do not represent American values, they are superfluous and need to be wiped out.
That is basically what he was saying, wipe them out, they are not like us, punish them for simply having a difference of opinion.

4) For those of you who do not understand what and who created the conditions for the Great Recession, I refer you to a comprehensive history of how the Democrats created the conditions for the Great Recession:

And whatever you think of Bush, understand that his administration saw the impending recession coming long before it hit, but Democrats in Congress constantly blocked many Bush attempts to fix the housing bubble that eventually imploded the entire economy:

Combine these discussion with the reality that Democrats controlled both houses of Congress leading up to the Great Recession, trying to put the entire responsibility for the Great Recession on Republicans is pretty weak and illogical. Which is exactly what Obama teried to do when he basically told Republicans to get the f out of the way as he swoops in to fix what he and the Democrats had a big hand in breaking: “But I don't want the folks [Republicans] who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them just to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess. I don't mind cleaning up after them, but don't do a lot of talking.” In other words, shut up and get out of my way. Somewhat violent, aggressive, and condescending, don’t you think?

5) But it was not just Republicans who felt the wrath of Obama’s violent rhetoric and the consequences when his supporters followed up with violence and aggression of their own. Consider some instances of Obama supporter violence examples from an American Thinker website article back in the 2008 Presidential campaign that was directed both at Republicans and Democrats:
  • Dr. Lynette Long, a one time Hillary Clinton supporter, compiled video testimonials of how Obama supporters had abused and aggressively acted against Clinton supporters.
  • Her video contained dozens of instances where mostly middle women were accosted and yelled at obscenely by Obama supporters in state caucuses back in 2008.
  • Female Clinton supporters claim that there were called c***s, and other sexual names, that they were spit on by Obama supporters, physically threatened with violence amidst an overall environment of open hostility.
  • The article also discusses the incident when women supporting McCain were accosted on the street during a peaceful demonstration in support of McCain where Obama supporters came by, calling the women c***s, white whores, and stupid bitches.
  • Besides the verbal abuse, the article claims and witnesses to the harassment claim that the young Obama supporters also shoved them physically.
  • Nowhere in the article or anywhere online coudl I find where Obama or any of his handlers came out and demanded this thuggery stop and that the behavior of his supporters be much less aggressive and violent and abusive.
That will do it for today but as you can see, Obama helped create the environment that he now lectures Trump on. Calling women c***s, whores, telling Americans to get out of the way, telling Americans you they need to be punished, telling Americans that they are the enemy, telling his supporters to bring guns and knives to a brawl, telling his supporters to get in others faces. That is the hateful environment that Obama created, lecturing others is so hypocritical and such an absence of leadership.

Unfortunately we will need to do another post tomorrow since we are not yet done on the hateful rhetoric and hateful quotes that this President has encouraged, spoken, and allowed.

Note: to see the video clips where the President actually puts forth this violent rhetoric in his own words go to:
