August, 2020, Part 6, Political Class Insanity: No Longer Safe In their Own Neighborhoods, Citizens Hit the Road and Leave the Dysfunction of Many American Cities

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

1) It has been no surprise that it is getting less and less attractive to live in New York state and especially New York City. Taxes in the state and city are outrageously high. The gross mismanagement of the whole coronavirus crisis has caused the state and the city to easily lead the country in virus deaths and confirmed virus cases. The antics of NYC Bill de Blasio has resulted in an ever growing homeless problem and crime has skyrocketed after dubious decisions and actions by the mayor and city council.

Given all of the negatives just mentioned, it is no secret that many New Yorkers are leaving the city and state for safer, more economically friendly situations:
  • So many people are moving out of NYC that moving companies are having trouble filling the demand for moving services.
  • One NYC based moving company, Oz Moving, reports that as of July 15 it was booked to capacity for the remainder of the month of July.
  • While summer is typically a heavy moving time of the year, this is the first time in 27 years that the company did not have enough resources to fulfill the high demand.
  • Ross Sapir, president of Roadway Moving, said that his company has been “insanely busy for the past 3 months” and that “we couldn’t keep up with demand.”
  • For United Van Lines, according to Fox Business News, “Between May and July there was a 95 percent year over year increase in interest in moving out of Manhattan. That compares with a 19 percent increase in moving interest in the U.S., overall.”
People are not stupid. They are not going to sit still forever while the government takes away more and more of their hard earned income while government services, especially police protection, gets worse and worse, endangering the safety of their families. New York governor Andrew Cuomo is FINALLY starting to realize this reality of human nature: “We’re trying to get people to come back. They’re not coming back right now.” Well, yeah, governor!

The top four destinations for people moving out of NYC are Florida, California, Texas and North Carolina. Two of those states, Florida and Texas, don't have a state or local income tax while both New York state and NYC each have income taxes. The North Carolina state income tax rate is less than the New York state income tax rates.

Obviously, those moving to California are not doing so to avoid high taxes, given that state’s outrageously high tax burden also. Maybe NYC residents are just looking for better weather in which to pay those high taxes.

There could be other reasons. But high taxes and an ever climbing crime rate and homeless problem are a pretty good and more important triad for getting out of both the city and state of New York. All of which shows that de Blasio, Cuomo, and the rest of the New York political class have done a horrible job of protecting and serving the citizens in the state and in NYC.

2) Cuomo has actually been caught groveling for people to move back to NYC. I read somewhere that 1% of the residents of New York state pay about 50% of the state’s entire tax burden. This is a very dangerous ratio to find yourself in if you are a politician since the wealthy are the types of people that would find it easiest to move out of NYC and New York state, taking their high proportion of tax dollars with them.

Cuomo seems to finally understand this problem. He is actually on record encouraging people to move back to NYC and that he would buy them a drink and cook a meal for them if they returned. Like I said, groveling and desperate: "'I literally talk to people all day long who are in their Hamptons house who also lived here, or in their Hudson Valley house or in their Connecticut weekend house, and I say, "You gotta come back, when are you coming back? We'll go to dinner, I'll buy you a drink. Come over, I'll cook. They're not coming back right now. And you know what else they're thinking? If I stay there, I pay a lower income tax because they don't pay the New York City surcharge.”

The good news is that he finally gets it. The really bad news: it is too little understanding way too late. People are leaving and taking their wealth and tax dollars with them. Which means that New York state and local governments need to slash spending or raise taxes, both of which will lead to others leaving the state and city, further reducing tax revenue and an irreversible financial death spiral is now in place.

3) The city of Minneapolis has decided to to go forth with the incredibly stupid idea to defund and disband the city’s police department. What they will replace it with is still undetermined but like most politicians, long term planning is usually beyond their mental capacity.

In the meantime, morale of the police force is low, dozens and dozens of officers have submitted their resignation letters, and the local politicians have caused the police to be disrespected and shamed because of the renegade and despicable actions of a very small handful of officers. As a result, the battle cry, “defund the police” is strong in the city, a battle cry that has already caused the following results:
  • By publicly demeaning and disrespecting the entire police force, the city politicians have now witnessed a crime wave sweeping over the city.
  • The local CBS TV station in the city reports that car theft is up year to date vs. 2019 by 46%, 2,170 vehicles stolen this year so far.
  • Robberies are up 36% year to date vs. 2019, 886 so far.
  • Many of these violent crimes that used to happen under the cover of darkness are now occurring in broad daylight.
  • Crime has gotten so bad that neighbors have banned together and are patrolling their neighborhoods to protect themselves, not relying on the police to do the job.
  • Of course, a local politician, Councilwoman Linea Palmisano, has a problem with citizens actually protecting themselves, claiming that neighborhood patrols could actually make the situation worse.
So let me get this straight: local politicians screw up their basic government function, namely protecting the lives and property of their citizens, demeaning, bashing, and criticizing the city police force while reducing police funding because of a very few bad police officers and their actions. Citizens are scared of being robbed, attacked, and killed so they ban together to do the job the defunded police and local politicians cannot do.

And a local politician has a problem with them protecting themselves even though her and her political counterparts in the city government have hired private, armed security guards to protect themselves. Classic political class insanity that in some cases is going to be fatal to an innocent Minneapolis citizen.

That will do it for today. Politicians screwing up their cities, unable to do the basic government function of protecting the lives and property of their citizens. As a result, many of those citizens are seeing the writing on the wall, moving elsewhere, and taking their tax dollars and productivity with them.
