November, 2018, Part 2,Political Class Insanity: Why Our Election Processes Are Broken And Why Next Week's Election Results Really Do Not Matter

It is another month which means it is again time to review the latest political class insanity from Washington and around the world. Political class insanity takes many forms including the wasting of taxpayer wealth, criminal fraud within government programs, inane and stupid political quotes and actions, the inability to create and implement effective and efficient government programs, stupid and ill performing economic policies and strategies, and other forms of insanity that continue to evolve and surprise and shock us.

Just a single topic today: why next week’s elections really do not matter:

If you are like me, you are very, very tired of this midterm elections cycle. Unrelenting political campaign advertising, mudslinging and attack ads like it has never been before, and very, very little discussion of the issues and plans to resolve those issues.

And it is not just our imagination that this time around it has been intense and non stop. According to the Center For Responsive Politics, a disgusting $5.2 billion will be spent during this election cycle. This is a whopping 35% more than what was spent during the last midterm election cycle, the biggest percentage increase in over two decades and far more than what has ever been spent.

How much is $5.2 billion:
  • If you had spent a $1,000 a day since the day Christ was born you still would not have spent a billion dollars, never mind $5.2 billion.
  • With $5.2 billion you could hire and pay an additional 8,821 teachers for ten years to better educate our kids.
  • With $5.2 billion you could hire and pay an additional 8,713 police officers for ten years to better protect us from criminal activity.
  • With $5.2 billion you could put 43,000 homeless U.S. families into an average apartment for ten years.
  • With $5.2 billion you could purchase 173 million Naxolone kits to help fight the overwhelming opioid drug addiction problem in this country, a problem that kills thousands every year.
  • With $5.2 billion you could spend more than what the American Cancer Society has spent on cancer research since 1946, $4.6 billion.
  • With $5.2 billion you could increase the annual amount of Alzheimer's/dementia research being done by the Alzheimer's Association by 47 fold.
Instead, society will spend $5.2 billion to elect a majority of people who are inept, ineffective, cowardly, and greedy. We will reelect many, many incumbents who have been in office for decades, who have done nothing to resolve the major issues facing Americans today. We will elect people who somehow will leave office in the future far richer than when they went into office, an increase in wealth that cannot be attributed to the salaries collected while in office.

We have allowed the political class to divide us, divert our attention, and fight each other while they slip into lucrative positions that require little work, little success, and whose prime objective is raise money to stay elected. Politics in this country is no longer a means to an end, getting and staying elected is now both the means and the end, issues of the day be damned.

Because at the end of election day, regardless of who wins, that $5.2 billion will be spent but no American will have more and better teachers, more police protection, a better chance at surviving a drug overdose, or avoiding and surviving a crippling disease.

But in reality, that $5.2 billion is nothing more than a nit on a gnat’s ass. Between $82 TRILLION in unfunded Social Security and Medicare liabilities, an ever growing national debt of almost $22 TRILLION, and unfunded state government pension liabilities of $7 TRILLION, the American political class has dug a debt hole for us of $109 TRILLION. The longer that debt gets ignored, the more painful the solution will be.

Within 5-10 years, that debt load will crush current and future Medicare and Social Security benefits for the seniors in our society, will put a massive new tax burden on our kids and grandkids, and will endanger our very democracy. And I can almost guarantee you that whoever wins their election on election day will be incapable, unwilling, or too cowardly to address the problem. Have a great day!

March, 2017, Part 1, The Unfolding Disaster That is Obama Care: A Small Step In The Right Direction

Every month for years now we have had to discuss how bad Obama Care is turning out to be under the continuing theme, “the unfolding disaster that is Obama Care.” This month is no different. As the legislation continues to march through America, driving up health care and health insurance prices as it serves as dead weight on economic growth, it cements its rightful place as the worst piece of legislation Washington has ever produced.

It never had a chance to be successful since it really never addressed the underlying root causes of our ever increasing health costs in the country:
  • Americans eat too much of the wrong kind of food, resulting in obscenely high obesity rates for the country.
  • Our food chain is infested with overdoses of high fructose corn syrup, salt, and other unhealthy additives.
  • Americans smoke too much.
  • Americans do not exercise enough.
  • The country is in serious need of health care tort reform.
  • Barriers to insurance company competition across state lines need to come down.
  • Obama Care never “followed the money”to find out who is actually profiting from the ever escalating healthcare costs in this country and how to get those factors under control.
  • Obama Care never got the immense amount of fraud and abuse in current government healthcare programs, Medicare and Medicaid, under control in order to save money to efficiently fund other government health care initiatives.
  • Obama Care never put serious research money towards curing the major diseases that drive high healthcare costs such as high frequency cancers and dementia type diseases.
You cannot resolve any problem unless you understand and address the underlying root causes. No difference here: Obama Care legislation never addressed these listed root causes and thus, has no chance of ever being successful.

But it is not just missing the root causes of our healthcare costs that makes Obama Care so horrible. It resulted in millions of Americans losing access to their favored doctors, hospitals, and insurance policies. It has caused insurance premiums, deductibles and co-pays to escalate substantially. It will likely add trillions of dollars to the national debt. It has exposed millions of Americans to higher than necessary identity theft chances. It has created government bureaucracies that are wastefully spending taxpayer wealth and being exploited by criminal elements. It has stifled economic growth and job creation.

These are just a sample of the types of idiocy that we have been reviewing for the past several years in this blog relative to Obama Care., To read those past posts, just enter the phrase, “the unfolding disaster,” in the search box above.

Today and this week, I am not yet going to get into whether the proposed Republican replacement legislation for ObamaCare is a worthy effort, I am still trying to understand its tenets and potential ramifications. My early view is that it also stinks (but probably does not stink as much as Obama Care) but I am keeping an open mind about it as my research proceeds.

But today let's focus only an alternative to the the alternative. Senator Rand Paul has come up with a piece of legislation that would replace Obama Care and which is a mere four pages long. Recall that Obama Care was a monstrosity piece of legislation that was something like 2,000 pages long. I am assuming that the Republican proposed replacement will also be quite long.

And anything that long like Obama Care is likely to be unwieldy, inefficient, filled with loopholes and trap doors, and eventually, useless. I like to stick to the old saying: “Keep things simple. Few moves can accomplish a lot.” It is better to do a few things well than to fail at many things.

Keep in mind that two of the greatest pieces of legislation ever passed by Washington were the Civil Rights Act, which was less than two pages long, and the Voting Rights Act that was less than three dozen pages long.

Which brings us to a fascinating proposal from Rand Paul who has put together a replacement piece of legislation for Obama Care which is four pages long. Count them, four pages long. Keep in mind that Senator Paul is a real doctor so he has some insights to the problem of healthcare that few others in Washington probably have. Robert Zerfing, writing for the CSC Medical Group on March 9, 2017, provides some background on Paul’s approach:
  • The purpose of Paul’s approach is to expand lower cost, higher quality healthcare for more Americans regardless of their medical history.
  • His philosophy on the proposed legislation is as follows: “Getting government out of the American people’s way and putting them back in charge of their own health care decisions will deliver a strong, efficient system that doesn’t force them to empty out their pockets to cover their medical bills. There is no excuse for waiting to craft an alternative until after we repeal Obamacare, and the Obamacare Replacement Act [his proposed legislation] charts a new path forward that will insure the most people possible at the lowest price.”
  • His proposal has four simple tenets: 1.) Choose inexpensive insurance free of government dictates; 2.) Save unlimited amounts in a health savings account (HSA) and have wider options for using those funds; 3.) Buy insurance across state lines; and 4.) Join together in voluntary associations to gain the leverage of being part of a large insurance pool.
According to Mr. Zerfing’s article, the following goes into a little more detail on how the above tenets would play out in real life:

-Legalizes Inexpensive Insurance Plans:
  • Ensures that Americans can purchase the health insurance coverage that best fits their needs as opposed to the idiocy of Obama Care which forced Americans to purchase insurance coverage for things that did not apply to their lives or needs.
  • Eliminates Obamacare’s essential health benefits requirement, along with other restrictive coverage and plan requirements, to once again make low-cost insurance options available to American consumers.
-Protects Individuals with Pre-Existing Conditions:
  • Provides a two-year open-enrollment period under which individuals with pre-existing conditions can obtain coverage.
  • Restores HIPAA pre-existing conditions protections. Prior to Obamacare, HIPAA guaranteed that those in the group market could obtain continuous health coverage regardless of preexisting conditions.
-Helps More People Save To Buy Health Insurance and Cover Medical Costs:
  • Authorizes a tax credit (up to $5,000 per taxpayer) for individuals and families that contribute to HSAs.
  • Removes the annual cap on HSAs so individuals can make unlimited contributions.
  • Allows HSA funds to be used to purchase insurance, cover premiums, and more easily afford a broader range of health-related expenses, including prescription and OTC drugs, dietary supplements, nutrition and physical exercise expenses, and direct primary care, among others.
-Guarantees Fair Tax Treatment of Health Insurance:
  • Equalizes the tax treatment of the purchase of health insurance for individuals and employers by allowing individuals to deduct the cost of their health insurance from their income and payroll taxes.
  • Frees more Americans to purchase and maintain insurance apart from their work status.
  • Does not interfere with employer-provided coverage for Americans who prefer those plans.
-Helps Individuals Join Together to Purchase Insurance:
  • Expands Association Health Plans (AHPs) to allow small business owners and individuals to band together across state lines through their membership in a trade or professional association to purchase health coverage for their families and employees at a lower cost.
  • Also allows individuals to pool together through any organization to purchase insurance.
  • Widens access to the group market and spreads out the risk, enhancing the ability of individuals and small businesses to decrease costs, increase administrative efficiencies, and further protect those with pre-existing conditions.
-Allows the Purchase of Insurance Across State Lines:
  • Creates an interstate market that allows insurers who are licensed to sell policies in one state to offer them to residents of any other state.
- Increases State Medicaid Flexibility:
  • Enables states to fully exercise current flexibilities afforded to them through Medicaid waivers for creating innovative state plan designs.
-Empowers Physicians:
  • Allows non-economically aligned physicians to negotiate for higher quality health care for their patients.
  • Amends the Internal Revenue Code to allow a physician a tax deduction equal to the amount such physician would otherwise charge for charity medical care or uncompensated care due to bad debt, limited to 10% of a physician’s gross income for the taxable year.
The aspects of Paul’s legislation highlighted in red shows where his plan aligns with our root cause list of problems listed above. As you can see, his proposal comes much closer than Obama Care when it comes to addressing root causes of our high health care costs in this country. While it does not address a number of important root causes, e.g. tort reform, smoking cessation, food chain poisoning, Alzheimer’s research, it does address many others including nutrition, exercise, crossing state lines, etc., making it a much better start at wiping out root causes.

And it is simple to understand and implement, being only four pages long, all of which can be read at the following link:

All right, that will get it done for the first update to this month’s ongoing review of the “unfolding disaster that is Obama Care." A small, but hopeful step in the right direction of fixing what Obama has certainly broken.

March,2016, Part 4, Political Class Insanity: Dictatorship In Virginia, Email Felons In the Obama Administration, and Bad Health Priorities In Washington

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

Let’s get started with the latest insanity from today’s American politicians:

1) Seems like the Obama administration is obsessed with shredding the Second Amendment, under the guise of saving American lives. About 30,000 people are killed by guns every year in this country. However, what are the subsegments of deaths underneath this 30,000 number:
  • Many of these deaths were criminals killing criminals, gang members killing other gang members, with guns obtained illegally so that anything Obama does will not change this situation.
  • Many of these deaths were criminals being killed by law abiding citizens defending themselves and their families so that anything Obama does for gun control will only make Americans more defenseless against violent criminals.
  • Many of these deaths were suicides and any type of gun control will likely push many of these suicide prone people to kill themselves using other means.
Thus, while the 30,000 number is somewhat high, many of the deaths were criminals dying as a result of being criminals so that it was their choice, not the lack of gun control measures, that upped the total. Thus, the actual number of innocent people being killed by guns is far less than the 30,000 number.

But from a priority perspective, if Obama truly cared about American lives, like he says he does relative to gun control, maybe he should look the results of a recent Centers For Disease Control (CDC) study. This study tallied how many Americans die on annual basis from various causes as measured in 2013. As you will see, the numbers dwarf the number of deaths from gun violence: The leading causes of death in this country in 2013 were:
  • Heart disease – 611,105
  • Malignant neoplasms (cancer) – 584,881
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases – 149,205
  • Accidents (unintentional injuries) – 130,557
  • Cerebrovascular diseases (strokes and aneurysms) – 128,978
  • Alzheimer’s – 84,767
  • Diabetes – 75,578
  • Flu and pneumonia – 56,979
  • Poisonings - 48,545 (of which 80% are accidental)
  • Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis – 47,112
  • Suicide – 41,149
  • Septicemia – 38,156
  • Liver disease and cirrhosis – 36,427
  • Hypertension – 30,770
Maybe Obama and the Federal government should be putting more energy towards alcoholism, treating depression, getting obesity under control, researching treatments for Alzheimer’s and cancer rather than focusing solely on additional gun control measures that account for a tiny fraction of the unnecessary deaths in this country relative to the many CDC ranked causes listed above.

2) Say the words “secret police” and visions of Nazi Germany, Communist Europe, and other dictatorships come to mind. I doubt that anyone would think the state of Virginia. But that is exactly what is being contemplated in that state.

According to reporting by Bob Unruh, writing for the WND website:
  • The Rutherford Institute, an important civil rights organization, is sounding the alarm about a proposed Virginia state piece of legislation that would create a “secret police” force within that state.
  • Senate bill 552 would classify the names of all police officers as “personnel records” which in turn would make their names exempt from public disclosure.
  • The president of the Rutherford Institute, John Whitehead summarized how dangerous this legislation is: “American citizens have a right to know when government agencies and government officials have engaged in wrongdoing. Whether those individuals occupy a public office or are employed by a law-enforcement agency is immaterial. If a government employee has been charged with misconduct, it is the right of the taxpayer to know both the name of the individual and the charge against them.”
  • He went on to say: “By ensuring that the identities of police officers could be kept completely secret, SB 552 would ostensibly result in the creation of secret police forces throughout the Commonwealth. If police are allowed to operate anonymously without the moderating influence that comes from public oversight of their activities, officers could be effectively immunized from wrongdoing and able to act with impunity and in disregard of the civil rights of citizens.”
Thus, if police misconduct occurred in the state, legal redress by those affected by the misconduct would be impossible since no defendant, i.e. the offending police officer, could be publicly named.

Welcome to present day America, or as George Orwell called it, “1984.”

3) We have previously discussed how lawless this administration was in so many ways and especially in the way it handled official government business email communications. The most obvious culprit of abusing email laws, in fact breaking Federal laws, is Hillary Clinton who had the audacity to use email ids and a computer server working out of her home for government business.

But we also now know that current Secretary of State John Kerry used private email accounts for official government business, violating Federal laws, that the current and past heads of the EPA broke the law regarding private email accounts, as did other high ranking government officials. And yet, none of them have been indicted or gone to jail for breaking these important Federal laws.

To this list of law violators we can now add former Attorney General Eric Holder. According to recent reporting by The Hill:

“Former Attorney General Eric Holder used the birth name of basketball icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as an alias for his official Justice Department email account, according to new documents revealed Thursday.

The Justice Department said in response to a Vice News request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) that Holder used the name “Lew Alcindor” in email conversations with his staffers. His own name does not appear in the emails.

The disclosure raises new questions about Obama administration officials’ email practices, following controversy over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s unconventional email setup.

Former Justice Department spokesman Brian Fallon had claimed last year that the nation’s former top lawyer used three different aliases while in office, one of which was undisclosed but based on the name of an athlete. The other two, Fallon said, were “Henry Yearwood” — a combination of names of Holder’s family members — and “David Kendricks” — from two members of the musical legends the Temptations.”

As always when it comes to the Washington political class, “do as I say, not as I do.” A ghetto kid gets busted for having a small amount of crack or marijuana in his pocket for personal use and he goes to jail for years. Break Federal laws regarding important government communications, which often impacted national security and the lives of every American, and nothing happens. Insane.

So what insanity did we learn of today: bad preventable death priorities in Washington, dictatorship forming in Virginia, and email felons in high ranking government positions. More insanity tomorrow.

November, 2015, Part 3, The Unfolding Disaster That Is Obama Care - More Co-op Failures, Turning Doctors Into Typists and More

Every month for years now we have had to discuss how bad Obama Care is turning out to be under the continuing theme, “the unfolding disaster that is Obama Care.” This month is no different. As the legislation continues to march through America, driving up health care and health insurance prices as it serves as dead weight on economic growth, it cements it rightful place as the worst piece of legislation Washington has ever produced.
It never had a chance to be successful since it really never addressed the underlying root causes of our ever increasing health costs in the country:

  • Our food chain is infested with overdoses of high fructose corn syrup, salt, and other unhealthy additives.
  • Americans smoke too much.
  • Americans do not exercise enough.
  • The country is in serious need of health care tort reform.
  • Barriers to insurance company competition across state lines need to come down.
  • Obama Care never “followed the money” to find out who is actually profiting from the ever escalating healthcare costs in this country and how to get those factors under control.
No difference here but with a big exception: Obama Care legislation never addressed these listed root causes and thus, has no chance of ever being successful.

But it is not just missing the root causes of our healthcare costs that makes Obama Care so horrible. It resulted in millions of Americans losing access to their favored doctors, hospitals, and insurance policies. It has caused deductibles and co-pays to escalate substantially.

Over the past few days we have been reviewing the latest unfolding disasters from the worst piece of legislation ever written by Washington. Let's see what is else is going sour int he world of Obama Care:

1) Dan Joseph, writing for the MRC TV website on October 20, 2015, outlined how the penalty under Obama Care for not having health insurance is going up substantially in 2016. The cost will be 2.5% of a household’s taxable 2016 income, more than double the fine in 2015.

But given that yesterday we saw that only one out of seven Americans without health insurance are expected to get it by 2016, it seems that Americans are saying that the fine is a better financial decision than paying more and more for Obama Care insurance policies that have growing premiums and higher and higher deductibles. Joseph’s article reiterates the information that we discussed earlier this week when Health and Human Services announced that it might get Obama Care policy enrollments up to 10.5 million, about half of what was originally expected.

Obviously, in most facets of life, missing your objective by 50% is usually a sign of abject failure. But in the Obama world of non-reality, it is not a missed goal it is just on “a much longer path toward equilibrium,” according to a senior government official. Talk about denial.

2) In reality, if the country does not find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia afflictions it does not matter what Obama Care’s performance is. As America ages, these types of aging diseases will overwhelm and break the nation’s health care system. This is one of the root causes of our higher and higher healthcare costs that we listed above.

How bad is the situation:
  • According to a recent article in BusinessWeek, Alzheimer’s kills 100,000 Americans annually.
  • It affects 5 million Americans every year with deteriorating health and high health care costs.
  • Currently, these types of brain diseases already consume 20% of Medicare and Medicaid budgets and expenses every year.
  • By 2030, just 15 years from now, these diseases will account for half of Medicare and Medicaid’s expenses.
  • Despite Obama Care, the Federal government spends ten times as much each year on cancer research and five times as much on AIDS research.
  • Non-government resources for disease research raise $.03 for Alzheimer’s research for every $1.00 raised for cancer research.
So, it will not matter how many people have a gold, silver, or bronze Obama Care plan. Tens of millions of Americans will likely face these types of brain diseases as the population ages and the cost involved in serving them will blow the economy and Obama Care out of the water. And Obama Care does nothing to address this financial time bomb.

3) Charles Krauthammer, writing for the Washington Post last summer, asserted that doctors have been turned into typists by Obama Care. The electronic health records (EHR) mandate required all doctors’ offices to digitize their patient records by January 1, 2015. According to Obama, this would save the healthcare industry billions of dollars a year.

The problem is, as would be expected by politicians that know nothing about running a medical practice, is that doctors now spend so much time trying to comply with Federal mandates that it takes time away from actually providing medical care. Krauthammer cites one study that found that 44% of doctors' time is spent filling out government forms vs. working with their patients. Thus, another aspect of Obama Care accomplishes the exact opposite of what it was supposed to accomplish: rather than improving efficiency and reducing costs this Obama Care mandate makes doctors and their practices more costly and less efficient.

4) And finally, let’s take another look at the failing Obama Care co-ops, a topic we have already hit hard this week. Recall that more than half of the original 23 state co-ops have already gone out of business or have announced they are shutting down by the end of the year because of financial troubles. An article in the December, 2015 issue of Reason magazine filled in some of the most troubling numbers from the co-ops:
  • The Louisiana co-op lost $5.7 million in 2014 one year after it opened its door for business, paying out $1.13 in benefits for every premium dollar it collected.
  • The Nevada co-op is going out of business after burning through $66 million in taxpayer wealth.
  • The Iowa co-op ran up a whopping $150 million in liabilities in less than two years and thus, went out of business since there was no way for it to repay those costs.
  • The Massachusetts co-op spent six times as much money on administrative costs than it collected in premiums or about $10,900 on each policyholder/customer.
  • This $10,900 level stands in stark contrast to a study that found that Medicare and private insurers spend about $150 a year per policyholder.
  • A potential co-op in Vermont never got off the ground but still burned through $10 million of Federal taxpayer money.
What a mess. But there is two pieces of good news within this co-op disaster:
  1. The 23 co-ops burned through about $2.4 billion with very little benefit in return. Imagine how much more money would have been wasted if every state formed their own co-op under Obama Care?
  2. The original plan called for a single national co-op to be administered by the Federal government. Imagine how much more expensive and how much of a failure that would have been, given the experience and screwups in every other aspect of Obama Care.
How sad when a piece of legislation is measured by how much worse it could have been.

That will do it for this today’s unfolding disasters that keep coming out of Obama Care. More tomorrow.

July, 2015, Part 2, By The Numbers: Subsidizing Billionaires, Alzheimer's Crushing Weight, and More

On a semi-regular basis we revisit the theme "by the numbers" just to check in on the state of the country and political class using actual realities and their underlying numbers, not the spin or lies from our politicians. You see, politicians usually have nothing to gain by looking at reality and the numbers since they are more than likely to have screwed up reality and our lives in the first place.

That is why they would rather lie and deceive than tell the truth. But that approach can be destroyed by looking at the hard numbers behind the mess they have created. I once worked for a boss whose favorite saying was: "There is nothing more devastating to an opinion than the right number.” And that is what we try to do with this theme, devastate politicians’ opinions by looking at the right numbers.

So let’s take a look at the numbers that have recently cropped up and again prove that the political class in America continues to be one of the worst set of people to ever hold office, given the state of the country, the many ways they screw up our wealth and government functions, and their inability or non-desire to step up and tell the truth.

1) Yesterday we discussed the reality that even though Obama and his supporters would like us to think that the economy is doing well, we showed with a series of real numbers how that is not the case. With first quarter GDP shrinking, 45 million Americans still needing food assistance every month, low or no wage growth, etc., the economic numbers and reality show a very weak, under performing economy.

And new numbers from the University of Michigan's famous index of consumer sentiment adds to that proof of a low performing economy. During the month of July the index value dropped from 96.1 in June to 93.3 in July. Experts had predicted that the index would be basically unchanged in July, surprising them also. The Greek financial crisis and the economic slide in China were most often cited by survey respondents as the reason for their growing pessimism.

Just another nail in the theory that we have always subscribed to: Washington politicians have no idea how to manage a growing and vibrant economy.

2) We have often decried the reality that Washington politicians are very good at handing out taxpayer wealth to companies and individuals who do not deserve such wealth. Those individuals and companies should be using their own wealth or their stockholders' wealth to fiannce their operations and take the financial risk associated with their operations.

Which makes the following story from the June 12, 2015 issue of The Week magazine, based on an article from the LA Times, most appropriate. Billionaire Elon Musk has three companies that he has put together: Tesla Motors, SolarCity, and SpaceX.

Together, the American taxpayer, courtesy of the Washington political class, has funded and underwrote those operations to the tune of $4.9 billion via grants, tax breaks, and environmental credits. Additionally, SpaceX has received $5.5 billion in government contracts from NASA and the Air Force.

The obvious question is if these are such good ideas and Musk is so rich, why isn't he funding these operations out of his own checkbook and the checkbooks of his backers, why are the American taxpayers funding these business risks for him? Government and politicians should not be in the business of picking winners and losers in a free market, that is the job of the market and those that compete in that market.

Those billions of dollars benefited virtually no one who helped fund them, the American taxpayer, and benefited only the insiders and favored few who were involved with those businesses.

3) Frequent readers of this blog know that we have shown dozens and dozens of time how Obama Care is the worst piece of legislation ever passed. It tries, and fails, to solve a public health issue with a lame, unwieldy and expensive insurance solution. Past proof of our assertion on this legislation can be viewed by entering the phrase, "unfolding disaster that is Obama Care" in the search box above.

More proof that Obama Care totally missed the mark was presented in an article on Alzheimer's disease in the May 29, 2015 issue of The Week magazine. The numbers from that article are truly frightening:

  • 5.3 million Americans currently suffer from Alzheimer's disease.
  • Those 5.3 million sufferers consumer almost 18 billion hours a year in unpaid care from friends and family.
  • However, with 76 million Baby Boomers entering their golden years, that affliction number is likely to go as high as 13.8 million in the coming decades.
  • Treatment costs for those almost 14 million Alzheimer's patients could get as high as $1.1 TRILLION annually and consume over 30% of Medicare's annual budget.
  • Such a wave of will swamp nursing homes and the country's ability to pay for and care for the millions more of Alzheimer's patients in the coming years.
While this trend has been gong forward in unabated, the Obama administration has been worried about how much a Bronze Plan in the Obama Care legislation would cost. In reality, the numbers do not lie since a Bronze Plan cost, and Obama Care in general, will be overwhelmed by the Alzheimer's numbers and become meaningless unless the challenge of Alzheimer's and other aging diseases is resolved.

Unfortunately, the Obama administration has not addressed or set out a strategy for resolving this issue, costing the country five years in finding a remedy for the disease and the crushing financial numbers it will cause.

4) Let's get back to the economy for our final set of numbers. An article in the July 17, 2015 issue of The Week magazine reported on how Microsoft was laying off almost 8,000 workers which works out to about 6% of the entire workforce.  The company is also taking a $7.6 billion write down as a result of its acquisition of Nokia's smartphone business. Not a good economic indicator omen when a bell weather company like Microsoft is taking such dramatic actions.

So, today the numbers showed that Americans are having less and less confidence in the economy, the political class continues its crony capitalism ways related today to subsidizing billionaire Elon Musk, Alzheimer's disease makes Obama Care even more irrelevant in the long term, and Microsoft is feeling the pains of a weak economy. The numbers do not lie even if politicians do.

More numbers tomorrow and they are likley NOT to be good numbers since they involve the Amerian political class.

June, 2014 The Unfolding Disaster That Is Obama Care, Part 4: By The Numbers... And the Numbers Are Not Good

This is our fourth update this month on the unfolding disaster that is Obama Care. Today we have put together a set of analyses and research that are very numbers oriented. Thus, the title of today’s approach, “By The Numbers.” By understanding the numbers better we can more fully see what a disaster Obama Care really is.

While everyone might have an opinion about reality, there really is only one true set of numbers that describe reality. The set of numbers we hope to explain below and a set of numbers that show how much the whole Obama Care effort has failed to accomplish its original goals is our objective today.

1) One of the original selling points the President made about Obama Care is although it was a massive piece of confusing legislation, somehow out of the confusion there would be no incremental negative impact on the national debt. Despite massive Federal subsidies to lower income Americans, a bailout fund for health insurance companies, dozens of new taxes, thousands and thousands of pages of new regulations, somehow all of this confusion was going to be national debt neutral or even a little positive.

Specifically:
  • In March 2010, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that the Obama Care health insurance provisions would cost the Federal government $788 billion between 2010 and 2019.
  • That cost would be more than offset by $511 billion in Federal government spending cuts, primarily to Medicare, and $420 billion in new Obama Care revenue streams, much of it generated by new taxes on hospital insurance and manufacturers of drugs and medical devices.
  • Thus, the CBO estimated at the time, the health care law would somehow miraculously reduce the national debt by $143 billion over 10 years, compared to the CBO’s non-Obama Care baseline view.
  • The vast majority of the savings, about $124 billion, was supposed to come from the health care portion of the law and another $19 billion would be derived from changes to student loans and grants.
But things are not working out so well relative to this overly, overly optimistic view that helped get the legislation passed:
  • Several programs within Obama Care that were supposed to be financially positive, e.g. the CLASS program, turned out to be bombs and were terminated early on, robbing a lot of the $124 billion surplus of a positive financial flow.
  • The Obama administration illegally and unilaterally starting postponing the rollout of many elements of the plan, further reducing the offsetting revenue planned against the ever increasing costs of the legislation.
  • The original ten year view that had arrived at the $124 billion surplus, basically included ten years worth of revenue but only seven years worth of costs. As we have gotten to a full rollout of the law, a new ten year view includes both a ten year view of Obama Care revenue and a ten year view of Obama Care costs and the original $788 billion ten year cost estimate is now over $2 trillion.
These are the current realities of the top line numbers of Obama Care. A more than doubling of the cost while the anticipated revenue streams have either been terminated or delayed.

In fact, things have gotten so bad, so confusing, and so out of control that the CBO has actually made the following public statement that the CBO and the Joint Committee on Taxation “can no longer determine exactly how the provisions of the ACA [Obama Care] that are not related to the expansion of health insurance coverage have affected their projections of direct spending and revenues.” In other words, things are so screwed up that we cannot even figure out anymore what is going on relative to revenue, costs, impacts on the national debt or much of anything else.

Really bad when you have put forth a piece of legislation that is so large and so convoluted that budget and audit experts can no longer figure out what is actually going on. Consider the words of Charles Blahous, a senior research fellow at George Mason University, on why CBO’s inability to estimate the net effect of the law is “a real problem:” “The ACA’s financing provisions were assumed to be effective so as to get a favorable score out of CBO upon enactment, but no one is keeping track of whether they’re being enforced. We receive occasional updates on the gross costs of the law, but none on whether the previously projected savings provisions are producing what was originally projected.”

This is also known as flying blind and when the political class and government fly blind, it is usually the taxpayers that have to pay.

2) Let’s talk about a really interested set of numbers from a recent blog post in Amy Ridenour's National Center Blog. “If Obama Care Saves Lives, It Does So Very Inefficiently.” The piece and the analysis within was done by David Hogberg.

The analysis approach is very creative and sound. At the very base level, if the real reason for having a health care industry is to save lives, than a measure of any health care program or law should be how well and how efficiently it saves lives. Now, one could easily and correctly make the case that the purpose of a health care industry is also to alleviate pain and I would agree. But for this analysis, let’s see how well or how poorly Obama Care saves lives, a very basic measure of health care effectiveness.

The basis of this approach is to use the historical mortality data from the so-called Massachusetts Romney Care program that was launched in that state several years before Obama Care was launched nationally. In many respects, both health care laws are similar except for the fact that we have some actual historical numbers and data on Romney Care that we can use to extrapolate the likely impact of mortality by Obama Care.

The analysis was embedded in the study, “Changes in Mortality After Massachusetts Health Care Reform. ” The study compared certain counties in Massachusetts with other, similar counties in the U.S. with similar demographic characteristics, both before and after Romney Care was implemented. The analysis and findings then proceed as follows:
  • This comparative analysis found that after Romney Care was launched, Massachusetts counties had an average mortality rate 2.9% lower relative to the other counties.
  • The authors concluded that about every “830 adults gaining health insurance [prevented] 1 death per year.”
  • Using costs associated with Romeny Care in Massachusetts, the blog post cites an analysis done by a Michael Cannon which estimates that $4 million was spent to save that one life out of 830 adults.
  • The blog cites another similar analysis done by a Professor Harold Pollack which came up with a slightly less expensive figure of $3.3 million, less expensive but still not cheap.
  • Combining these analysis with a formula developed by the Institute of Medicine shows that nationally about 30,395 people die each year from lack of insurance.
  • The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the Obama Care exchanges and the Medicaid expansion will cover 25 million, or 46 percent, of the 55 million uninsured by 2017.
  • Putting all of these numbers together and doing the Massachusetts calculations on a national basis we find that there would be 13,982 more lives saved nationally in 2017.
  • The CBO has previously estimated that the net cost of expanding coverage under Obama Care will be about $142 billion in 2017.
  • If we divide that cost by the 13,982 lives saved by Obama Care providing insurance to Americans who were previously uninsured, the cost of saving one life is a staggering $10.1 million, far more than the very high Massachusetts cost of about $3-4 million per life saved.
Now, if you are that one person who is getting their life saved even at a cost of upwards of $10 million, then you do not care what the cost is. But consider what other approaches could have been used to save far more lives at a far less cost than Obama Care, as identified in the blog post:
  • A 2009 research effort and article found that anti-smoking efforts had a median cost of $4,400 per year of life saved.
  • Other research shows that the cost per year of lives saved via hypertension screening efforts is about $79,832 per life.
  • Annually, the country loses an estimated 480,000 people due to smoking and 26,634 due to hypertension, far more than we lose due to a lack of health insurance.
  • Outside of the blog post numbers, consider a recent article from Business Week which cited industry sources when explaining that there are about 5 million Americans today that suffer from nondurable Alzheimer’s disease, the number of sufferers will triple by 2050, and that the disease probably kills about 500,000 Americans a year.
These are root causes of our ever escalating health care costs, Eliminate or reduce these sources of death and suffering, and you would easily reduce the nation’s health care costs without a 2,500 page law that no one understands or can track. Obama missed a great legacy opportunity, similar to the legacy John F. Kennedy carved out for himself when he challenged the country to put a man on the moon within the decade of the 60s.

How much more historic would it have been if Obama had declared that the country would wipe out half a million unnecessary deaths a year from smoking within the next ten years and put a plan together to do so?

How much more historic would it have been if Obama had declared that the country would wipe out half a million unnecessary deaths a year by finding a cure for Alzheimer’s within the next ten years and put a plan together to do so?

So much more good could have been done at a much lower cost from a mortality/saving Americans’ lives perspective than the failed approach of Obama Care. The numbers do not lie.

3) One final numbers discussion today. A recent analysis by Roll Call showed that the online health care exchanges were still having substantial problems more than  nine months after the launch back in late 2013. The Roll Call approach involved emailing health officials in all 50 states and Washington D.C. Their findings and the associated numbers include the following:
  • There is probably at least 2.9 million individuals that still had not had their Obama Care applications processed.
  • 2.9 million unprocessed applications is equivalent to the combined populations of Montana, Wyoming and North and South Dakota.
  • Additionally, the 2.9 million unprocessed forms is only the estimate for people that are waiting for their INITIAL application to be processed. There are probably other delays still pending beyond the initial application process blockade.
  • The survey also found that the largest piles of unprocessed applications were in states with very large populations: California (900,000 residents), Illinois (330,000), North Carolina (at least 298,840), Ohio (212,090), Virginia (183,643), Georgia (at least 159,313), Michigan (at least 123,381) and South Carolina (at least 113,429).
Nine months after rollout and millions of people still do not know their status relative to Obama Care health insurance coverage. A pathetic set of numbers no matter how you cut them.

That will do it for our Obama Care unfolding disaster series for this month. We could go over other disasters but that is just too depressing to do at this point in time, given the grave disasters we have reviewed over the past four days. I am sure that next month will provide another juicy and depressing set of fiascos, lunacies, and expenses that will continue to spring up from the worst piece of legislation ever enacted.
