April, 2024, Political Class Insanity, Part 4: New York and California Race To The Bankruptcy Court And Horrific Political Behavior In Atlantic City

Every month we devote posts to just general political class insanity that is running rampant through the country. The members of the American political class continue to show that they are incapable of efficiently operating any level of government in this country.

Even their best efforts are almost always ineffective at resolving any problem facing Americans. They spend a great amount of time not trying to improve the lives of their citizens but continually ensuring their reelection and enriching themselves, their families, and their friends in the process, all at taxpayer expense.

1)We have often talked about the real possibility that a state government will soon go bankrupt. The bankruptcy is likely to unfold as follows:

  • The state government and its politicians continually raise taxes but do not reduce its spending.

  • This drives residents and businesses out of the state to find more financial and economic freedom.

  • As these residents and businesses leave, they take their tax dollars with them, which causes financial strains on the state government budgets.

  • As the tax revenue decreases, politicians raise taxes more which drives out more residents and businesses which reduces the tax stream even more and the financial death spiral is in place.

It has been our opinion, based on out migration of residents and businesses and the resultant drop in tax revenue, that these states are the most likely to go bankrupt: New York, California, New Jersey and Illinois. The tax burden in these states continues to be very high and the out migration has been most pronounced in states like these.

Recent analysis now shows that New York state has possibly taken the lead in the race to bankruptcy court:

  • The American Legislative Exchange Council recently released its latest annual report on the economic outlook for each state.

  • New York state is dead last in economic outlook for the 11th year in a row.

  • The analysis is based on 15 economic policy variables: tax rates, sales tax burden, tort systems, minimum wage, debt  service as a share of tax revenue and other factors.

  • According to the report: “New York’s across-the-board high tax burden, lack of fiscal constraint and out-of-control debt growth and general unfriendliness to business and worker freedom continue to make the Empire State the Emperor of the Bottom. Each of these factors is influenced directly by state lawmakers through the legislative process. Generally speaking, states that spend less — especially on income transfer programs — and states that tax less — particularly on productive activities such as working or investing — experience higher growth rates than states that tax and spend more.”

  • New York had the lowest rankings for state and  local taxes, marginal and  corporate tax rates.

  • It ranked 46th for property taxes and 32nd for sales tax.

  • ALEC chief economist Jonathan Williams said, “New York is the perfect example of a state that can’t get out its own way, thanks to failed, tax and spend approach to policymaking. In order to reverse the devastating trend of outmigration of businesses and individuals, New York needs to embrace commonsense, pro-taxpayer policy reforms.”

  • Not surprisingly, our other candidates likely to go bankrupt also were rated of having a very high tax burden and dismal economic outlook including Illinois (48th worst state), California (47th worst) and New Jersey (46th worst).

High taxes means lower economic performance which makes life worse for the citizens in these states. It is a pretty straightforward reality but it is a reality lost on the politicians in these states who cannot stop spending more money than they get in tax revenue.

2)Staying with financial distress, a recent analysis by the Travelerz website analyzed the economic and living conditions in each state as it related to the best places to retire and then ranked them from the worst places to retire to the best. Not unsurprising, three of the four states we listed above ranked very low when it comes to attractive places to retire:

  • California - 49th worst

  • New Jersey - 46th worst

  • New York - 44th worst

Thus, it  does not appear that the most likely states to go bankrupt are going to be saved by a large influx of retirees since at least three of them are ranked very, very unattractive to retirees. Another reason to continue to suspect that one of these states, and Illinois, we quite soon go into bankruptcy.

3)So, California has the fourth worst economic outlook and has the second worst chance of getting a lot of retirees retiring in the state. Two reasons why California might be the first state to get into a financial death spiral and win the race to bankruptcy court.

And now there might be  another reason to bet on California getting to bankruptcy first:

  • A gas station in California recently broke the $7.00 level for a gallon of gas.

  • And the price did not just inch over the $7.00 level, charging $7.29 a gallon at a Menlo Park, California Chevron gas station.

  • And while this is an atrocious price for even California, the overall average price for a gallon of gas in the state recently came in at a still whopping $5.43 a gallon.

  • The national average for a gallon was $3.68.

  • Thus, as a result of mostly higher gas taxes courtesy of the California political class, those in California are paying more than 47% higher for gas than the average across the country.

Just another reason for businesses and citizens to leave the state because of the high cost of living in the state, a state that is showing a great chance of getting into the financial death spiral discussed above.

4)One would hope that our politicians were of the highest moral character and behavior. That they were positive leaders in their communities, setting examples for those that they represented in office.

Obviously, this is usually  not the case as we have  pointed out so many times in this blog. Way too often we see stories of politicians breaking laws, involved in shady dealings, and constantly looking to enrich themselves.

A very bad and recent example of horrific behaviors by an American politician comes to us from  Atlantic City, New Jersey:

  • Atlantic City mayor, Marty  Small, along with his wife who is the Superintendent of the city’s public schools, were recently charged with some pretty heinous crimes.

  • They are accused of having allegedly abused their teenage daughter over a period of several months.

  • The abuse included beating their daughter unconscious with a broom, threatening to push her down the stairs, and punching her in the mouth.

Another class act from the American political class.

That will do it for today: the race to be the first state to go bankrupt accelerates with New York and California going at it very hard and another despicable performance by an American politician, this time allegedly beating up his own daughter.

December, 2018, Part 3, Political CLass Insanity: Politicians' Fist Fight In Jersey, More Nonsense From Ocasio-Cortez and The Pomposity Of Obama

It is another month which means it is again time to review the latest political class insanity from Washington and around the world. Political class insanity takes many forms including the wasting of taxpayer wealth, criminal fraud within government programs, inane and stupid political quotes and actions, the inability to create and implement effective and efficient government programs, stupid and ill performing economic policies and strategies, and other forms of insanity that continue to evolve and surprise and shock us.

Let’s get started:

1) We have never been fans of politicians. They are ineffective, vindictive, petty, greedy, and useless. And now they are violent and their violence has been caught on tape:
  • The Democratic mayor of Atlantic City was recently caught on camera fighting an Atlanta City councilman.
  • And to make things worse, he was not even fighting a Republican councilman, he was fighting a fellow Democrat.
  • And the fight was in the parking lot of a casino.
So much for adult debate of the issues, let’s just duke it out with fists in the basement of a casino. Class act, an embarrassing act.

2) For many years we thought that Nancy Pelosi was the best source for absolutely inane, ignorant and out of touch statements. But in a matter of months, newly elected Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has shot up the charts as a politician with the most inane statements possible:
  • Despite having an economics degree, she does not know how to calculate the unemployment rate, an extremely simple economic concept.
  • She thinks that the Federal government has three branches of government: the Presidency, the House of Representatives and the Senate.
  • She somehow thinks that the Electoral College is somehow linked to and represents slavery.
We could go on with her insanity but will stop here. If you put her name in the search box above you can get a full array of her ignorance.

But she is the gift of gaffe that keeps on giving, considering her recent observation: she recently compared her election, and the election of a few other socialists, to Congress as being on a par with the moon landing and the 1964 Civil Rights act.

Specifically, “We've done what we thought was impossible. We went to the moon. We electrified the nation. We established civil rights. We enfranchised the country. We dig deep, and we did it. We did it when no one else thought that we could. That's what we did when so many of us won an election this year.”

Let’s review this assertion to see if it was truly as epic as she claimed:
  • She is not the first woman elected to Congress.
  • She is not the first Hispanic elected to Congress.
  • She is not the first Democrat elected from her Congressional district.
  • She won an election in an overwhelmingly Democratic Congressional district.
  • None of the others she referred to upset a Republican, they all came from truly Democratic districts.
  • At no point was she riding atop a complex rocket that could explode at any point in time, leading to an instant and fiery death.
  • At no point in time was she a quarter million miles from home.
  • At no point were the hopes and dreams of the human race riding on her success.
  • She did not electrify the nation, she did not establish civil rights, and she did not enfranchise the country.
Sorry Congresswoman, to think your election had anything close to the historical and human impact that the moon landing and the Civil Rights Act had on humanity is absolutely ridiculous. In fact, you insult the thousands and thousands of people who fought for civil rights back in the 50s and 60s, risking life, limb, and their safety. You risked nothing so please stop insulting those that were much more important and much braver than you, whether it was going to the moon or riding in the front seat of a bus in the Deep South. There is NO comparison.

3) Speaking of pathetic politicians, Obama has refused to go away and act dignified like all previous Presidents. He is so narcissistic that he constantly is showing up in the news making claims and strutting around that is so below how former President should act.

First, he tried to claim that the incredibly great economic times the country is currently enjoying is because of his economic policies, not anything Trump has done. Although none of the current trends, record low unemployment across all societal breakdowns, record government tax revenue collection because of so many people now have jobs, rising wages, low inflation, great overall national economic growth, etc., occurred during the eight years he was President, he still thinks, in his own narcissistic mind, that he somehow made it all happen, two years AFTER he left office.

In reality, Obama presided over the worst economic recovery in the history of the country despite his best, and fruitless expensive, efforts to not have this distinction. Sounds like a massive jealousy streak on his behalf.

Not satisfied sounding like a jealous little kid when it comes to the economy, he also now is trying to claim credit for the low energy prices and boom in energy production in this country, again, two years AFTER he left office:
  • His specific claim: “You know, I know we’re in oil country and we need American energy, and by the way, American energy production. You wouldn’t always know it but it went up every year I was president. That whole, suddenly America’s like the biggest oil producer and the biggest gas — that was me, people.”
  • OMG, is he kidding me, he wanted everyone to pay $5.00 for a gallon of gas to REDUCE energy consumption and production.
  • OMG, is he kidding me, he blocked the Keystone Pipeline project even though every Federal agency that looked at it said it was okay.
  • OMG, is he kidding me, he shut down oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico for half a year while disobeying a Federal judge’s order to not do so.
  • OMG, is he kidding me, he tried in so many ways to cut back oil production on Federal lands.
  • OMG, is he kidding me, he signed off on the ridiculously stupid Paris Climate Agreement that would have strangled America’s energy industry and raised energy prices significantly for Americans.
  • OMG, is he kidding me, he imposed costly regulations on fracking companies to restrict that industry, an industry that has led the United States to lead the world in reducing its carbon footprint, has helped keep gas prices low, and has broken the back of the OPEC monopoly on energy.
  • OMG, is he kidding me, Trump rolled back 70 Obama era regulations that inhibited energy production.
  • And finally, consider what former Shell CEO John Hofmeister said Obama for taking credit for America’s oil boom.“If anything, he was trying to frustrate the efforts by taking federal lands off of the availability list — putting them just, no more drilling [sic]. He shut down the Gulf of Mexico for a period of six months. [He] changed the regulations from an average of 60 to 80 pages per permit to 600 to 800 pages per permit. He also never approved the Keystone XL pipeline after dangling all the potential customers for eight years. And it was in the eighth year when he said no Keystone Pipeline.”
Another example where it is tough to say whether a politician is saying something so stupid because he actually believes it or he is saying it because he thinks we are too stupid to see through the lie. In either case, it always stinks that a politician so can be so petty or self centered….or both, which I think is the case with everything Obama says and does. More insanity still to come.

American Political Class Projects - Promises, Progress, and Economic Estimates That Never Materialize

A recent article in the September 4, 2010 issue of The Economist magazine reminded how the promises, progress, and economic estimates made by the politicians in America never materialize. The article's title was "Atlantic City - A Struggling City By The Sea." Atlantic City had long been a famous and quality place to vacation in the summer, beginning with the local Lenni-Lenape Indians who summered in the place where the city exists today. In 1850, a local doctor started to develop the area which received a big boost a few years later when a rail line brought city residents to Atlantic City for their vacations.

However, a little over a century later the city was facing hard times. It had become rundown from an infrastructure perspective with a high crime rate and a declining tourism industry. Someone in the political class came up with the great idea of allowing casino gambling only in Atlantic City. The political thinking and the argument they used to force through the legislation was that casino gambling would rejuvenate the city while also contributing some of the gambling taxes to other state programs in New Jersey. As a New Jersey resident, I remember Governor Brendan Byrne telling us how much money would flow into Atlantic City and how it would create a tourist mecca right there on the Jersey shore.

Let's fast forward to today and see what the Economist article has to say about Atlantic City:
  • The unemployment rate is 12%, more than two percentage points higher than the national average.
  • 24% of the housing units in the city are empty.
  • The city's poverty rate is slightly higher than it was in 1978 when casino gambling was introduced.
  • Outsiders view the city as unsafe and unclean.
  • The main industry of the city, casino gambling, is in the decline with the Casino Control Commission recently reporting that the city's casinos had reported a 23% decline in operating profits in the second quarter of 2010.
Thus, the promises, progress and economic estimates that Governor Byrne presented to the state's residents never permanently materialized. Poverty, high unemployment, and a bad reputation still exist, and rejuvenation is still a dream. And it may forever stay a dream since many surrounding states are opening their own gambling options to make up for state government shortfalls. After more than thirty years, the political class could not deliver on its promises in Atlantic City.

But Atlantic City is not an isolated situation. The political class has had some spectacular failures in recent years that drawf the failed political agenda and goals of Atlantic City. These failures came up far short of the promises, progress and economic estimates they used to sell their ideas to the American public:
  • The Big Dig was a massive Boston road and tunnel building project that was supposed to relieve Boston downtown traffic and get rid of some unsightly overpass roadways in the middle of the city. In 1985 the original estimate to build out the system was $2.8 billion. By 2006, the actual costs had reached $14.6 billion, five times higher than the original estimate. A July 17, 2008 Boston Globe article estimated that the final costs, when you account for higher interest payments to finance the buildout, would be $22 billion, almost 8 times the original estimate. Not only did the political class blow the budget, they also blew the implementation with numerous problems still plaguing the project and at least one death which occurred when faulty cement roof tiles fell on and killed an unsuspecting motorist.
  • The original incremental costs of executing the 2003 invasion of Iraq by the Bush adminstration was estimated to be about $60 billion. Looking back, that estimate looks quaint. Depending on your measurement methodology and what is included and not included as a cost of the invasion, a conservative cost estimate of the Iraq war will be at least one TRILLION dollars. This is about 16 times more than the original Bush estimate. Missed that estimate also, more spectacularly than the Boston Big Dig.
  • The Obama administration claimed that the health care reform legislation that was passed earlier this year would cost less than $900 billion and would actually help offset the national debt to the tune of $135 billion over ten years. However, the underlying numbers that led to these conclusions are already starting to come apart. The Associated Press has pointed out in their analysis that the cost of many of the programs in the legislation were not included in the budget estimate. Thus, the Congressional Budget Office estimate of the of the $135 billion in cost savings may actually be closer to only $20 billion over ten years in order to accurately compare what is in the legislation with the cost of providing what is in the legislation. On a more detailed basis, the Cato Institute estimated in their analysis that Obama Care will actually cost the nation $2.7 TRILLION, no $900 billion, and will add $352 billion to the national debt, not save $135 billion. I would tend to trust Cato than the political class, especially since Nancy Pelosi was widely quoted prior to the passage of the legislation that "We need to pass the bill so you can find out what's in it." With inane statements like this and the track record of the political class when it comes to over promising and under delivering, I have much more faith in Cato's numbers and estimates than Obama's.
  • And finally, lets go back to New Jersey. According to an October 8, 2010 Associated Press article, Governor Chris Christie has decided to scrap  New Jersey's plans to build a new rail tunnel from New Jersey into New York City. The reason to scrap the project that has Federal spending and is already underway? The original  budget estimate for the project in 2005 was $5 billion. By 2008 the budget estimate had grown to $8.7 billion. Recently, a Federal official has stated that the project is likely to cost between $9 and $10 billion, doubling in size in just five years. Christie stated in the article that the cost of the project could now be between $11 billion and $14 billion. If Christie is right, the cost estimate could be almost three times larger than the political class estimated in 2005. As you look at the shifting numbers you get the deja vu feeling of the Boston Big Dig project all over again: costs keep going up unchecked and timetables keep slipping. I applaud Governor Christie for putting his foot down to unlimited wasting of taxpayer money, something that was not done in Boston. His exact words were: "I simply cannot put the taxpayers of the State Of New Jersey on what would be a never ending hook." Compare this with the statement from one of the state's Federal Senators, Senator Frank Lautenberg, who stated that cost overruns on a project of the tunnel's size were inevitable but said Christie's numbers were inflated. Note that he did not say that the Federal official's estimate of $9 to $10 billion was inflated, double the original estimate.
This is what we are dealing with. Political class promises never materialize, the progress they promise never happens, and from an economic perspective, the taxpayer always gets the short end of the deal. And we should not be surprised. We have politicians that need to pass legislation before they understand what is in it and what the impact will be (Pelosi), we have politicians that have finally admitted that their estimates are worthless since cost overruns are "inevitable" (Lautenberg), we have politicians that are either to naive or are being dishonest when presenting their budget and economic numbers (Bush and Iraq, Obama Care, and the Big Dig), and we have politicians that will promise rejuvenation that never occurs (Atlantic City gambling). Why should we believe anything they tell us?

And, that is the crux of the problem facing the nation today. We trust no one in political office, especially if they are from the "other" political party. Without trust, the opportunity to solve the major issues facing the country is virtually non-existent. Thus, until the political class is replaced with new people that have some degree of integrity and will tell us the truth, not some shabby, low ball estimate that they use to get their plans approved, we can expect to overpay for under performance, whether it is for health care, transportation infrastructure, or foreign policy.

We can start a new era of integrity in November by dumping all of the incumbent politicians that are party to the never materializing promises and progress (and lies) and start over with a clean slate. Longer term, the implementation of term limits as proposed in Step 39 in "Love My Country, Loathe my Government is the best way to turnover politicians and prevent them from eventually turning into the types of people of low integrity we have today.
