February, 2020, Part 7, Political Class Insanity: Birth Control Licensing In Chicago, Small Businesses Flee NYC, and Pelosi is Despicable In DC

It is another month which means it is again time to review the latest political class insanity from Washington and around the world. Political class insanity takes many forms including the wasting of taxpayer wealth, criminal fraud within government programs, inane and stupid political quotes and actions, the inability to create and implement effective and efficient government programs, stupid and ill performing economic policies and strategies, and other forms of insanity that continue to evolve and surprise and shock us.

Let’s get started:

1) Just when you thought that American politicians could not get any more intrusive into our lives, any more anti-freedom, a politician comes along to blow away that assumption:
  • According to a recent article on the Liberty Planet website, a local Chicago politician, Ray Lopez, wants anyone wanting to have a kid to get a license from the government before conceiving.
  • A likely cause of this insane idea was the recent case of a father who is accused of murdering his own which is certainly a tragic story.
  • But to force ALL would be parents to go in front of basically a baby licensing board before conceiving is too inane to try and comprehend.
  • Communist China tried to get involved in the childbirth process with their one child strategy and it has been a disaster.
  • China’s population is aging rapidly causing all kinds of social service support issues.
  • Also, over time Chinese parents have been forced to have abortions for violating the one child laws, those that managed to give birth to extra kids have had to pay hefty fines for the simple act of parenthood, and these extra kids have been denied “ofifcial documentation” from the central government which means they cannot go to school, enroll in college, or get a decent job.
  • And this local politician wants to do a similar program in this country.
The government intrusion into our lives in this idiocy boggles the mind:
  • Would the government take a child away from the parents if they did not get a license?
  • If kids were taken away from parents because no license was obtained, would the kids be put in foster care, a system that already has far too many family-less kids in the system?
  • If the parents got a divorce and remarried would the step father or mother have to go through some sort of licensing process also?
  • Would their fines and imprisonment for giving birth without a license, planned or unplanned/accidental births?
  • Would be involved in this licensing process, who gets to determine what the requirements would be, and what would prevent the process from not becoming a social manipulation tool, e.g. parents of a certain political bent might get denied a license (e.g. remember how Obama denied IRS rights and due process to Republican political groups)?
And in the end, who says the government and the politicians that operate it could even determine if a parent would murder their kid after birth? Hey, they cannot even enforce their own Do Not Call List or run an efficient Post Office operation, and they want to dictate who can have a kid. Ridiculous and ludicrous.

2) We have often talked about the basic human need to be free and a large part of that need for freedom is economic freedom. With economic freedom we are freer to educate our kids the way we want, to start a family business, to take a better vacation, etc. And when taxes get too high which ends up infringing on our freedom, people and businesses usually take action at some point to relieve that tax oppression, usually by moving somewhere where taxes go down and freedom goes up.

We have talked about this situation any number of times. Illinois, New Jersey, and California keep shrinking in population size as the politicians in those states continually raise the tax burden on state residents. And now, according to a recent New York Post article, the same thing is happening relative to small businesses in New York City:
  • John Aidan Byrne wrote back in May, 2019 that “NYC Taxes Are Squeezing Out Small Business To Florida.
  • Remember, as we have discussed, there is no state income tax in Florida and other taxes, gasoline, property taxes, etc. are generally lower, giving residents and businesses more economic freedom.
  • In a 2018 ranking of small business growth, it showed that Miami, Florida had overtaken New York City when it comes to small business growth.
  • In fact, NYC had plummeted from first to fourth in the latest rankings of small business growth.
  • Rohit Arora, the CEO of Biz2Credit which developed the rankings said: “Although New York is still booming, the cost of doing business for small business owners continues to rise. Rents continually increase, and labor costs are high and will continue to increase, since New York has enacted a law to raise the minimum wage to $15.”
  • The American Legislative Exchange Council has ranked the city and state dead last in economic competitiveness.
  • And while the overall economy is strong, NYC keeps raising taxes to pay for its financial problems which in turn drives out both businesses and residents.
  • Mayra Rodriguez Valladares, a capital markets and regulatory consultant, is quoted in the article by estimating that New York City has only about $59 billion in assets to pay $244 billion in liabilities: “Moreover, this burden grew by an additional $1,600 for every New York City resident every year since 2014.”
  • Besides higher and higher taxes, NYC liberal politicians continue to pile more and more regulations onto city small businesses, e.g. paid sick leave, regulations that also reduce economic freedom and the profits of small businesses.
So, just another example of how American politicians continue to be totally ignorant when it comes to simple economic principles. Higher and higher taxes cause people to make rational economic decisions to keep as much of their hard earned wealth as possible which usually results in people and businesses leaving for less taxing situations. This in turn reduces the tax flow of government entities which causes them to raise tax rates to make up for the shortfall which results in more people and businesses leaving which results in lower tax revenue and the economic death spiral is underway.

As a result you end up with the current migration situation in NYC - on average, every day 100 NYC residents leave the city and move elsewhere where the tax bite is much more reasonable. And yet the politicians they leave behind never understand why and Miami becomes the fastest growing environment for small businesses in the country.

3) Let’s finish today with the disgrace that is Nancy Pelosi. Most people probably know that on national television she tore up Trump’s State of the Union speech in total contempt for the President. We now know from video clips that this was a premeditated action since she had started ripping the pages before the end of the speech.

In doing so she insulted and disrespected the many Americans who had their story of success told by Trump in the speech: young and old, white and black, men and women, ordinary Americans who had overcome challenges and were succeeding in America. And in a couple of flagrant rips, Pelosi ripped their stories into pieces because she is an immature, repugnant person when it comes to common decency and respect.

Well, sometimes there is karma as untold millions of people were disgusted by her behavior and some are taking actions in response to her childish antic:
  • Democratic Congressman, Lee Zeldin, who is also a law professor, denounced Pelosi’s disgusting actions and said she should step down from being Speaker of the House.
  • Specifically: “Nancy Pelosi should step down as Speaker. I’m confident that the American public will be directly sending her that message themselves later this year if she doesn’t read the tea leaves herself and resign on her own terms today. It’s time.”
  • Jonathan Turley, who was a witness in the House impeachment proceedings and who is also a George Washington University law professor was also outraged at Pelosi’s actions: “[44 years ago] The country was deeply divided, but both parties maintained the tradition of civility and decorum. I was struck how members, even in the heat of furious debates, would not attack each other by name and followed rigid principles of decorum. They understood that they were the custodians of this institution and bore a duty to strengthen and pass along those traditions to the next generation. At that moment, she represents the House as an institution — both Republicans and Democrats. Instead, she decided to become little more than a partisan troll from an elevated position. The protests of the Democratic members also reached a new low for the House. Pelosi did not gavel out the protest. She seemed to join it. That is why I argue in the Hill that, if Pelosi does not apologize and agree to honor the principle of neutrality and civility at the State of the Union, she should resign as speaker.”
  • Republican Matt Gaetz and other Republican Congressman sent a letter to the chairman of the House Ethics Committee that demanded an investigation to Pelosi’s actions.
  • Specifically, they want an investigation “into Speaker Pelosi’s flagrant violation of decorum, as defined in clauses 1 and 2 of House Rule XXIII, and request a criminal referral for her potential violation of 18 U.S.C. §2071 (Concealment, removal, or mutilation of documents), following President Trump’s recent State of the Union address of February 4, 2020. Her unseemly behavior certainly warrants censure.”
So Democrats, Republicans, and law professors are all in agreement that what Pelosi did was despicable. Given that this type of agreement rarely happens in Washington, it tells you how horrible Pelosi behaved. No matter how much she hates Trump, her disrespect of the Americans that are referred to in Trump’s speech is unforgivable.

Stupidity in Chicago, economic ignorance in NYC, and unparalleled disgrace form Nancy Pelosi, a major contributor to the hatred and venom that pervades Washington D.C. Political class insanity that is more out of control than ever.

August, 2016, Part 1, The Unfolding Disaster That Is Obama Care: Higher Costs, Less Choice, More Hassles

Every month for years now we have had to discuss how bad Obama Care is turning out to be under the continuing theme, “the unfolding disaster that is Obama Care.” This month is no different. As the legislation continues to march through America, driving up health care and health insurance prices as it serves as dead weight on economic growth, it cements its rightful place as the worst piece of legislation Washington has ever produced.

It never had a chance to be successful since it really never addressed the underlying root causes of our ever increasing health costs in the country:

  • Americans eat too much of the wrong kind of food, resulting in obscenely high obesity rates for the country.
  • Our food chain is infested with overdoses of high fructose corn syrup, salt, and other unhealthy additives.
  • Americans smoke too much.
  • Americans do not exercise enough.
  • The country is in serious need of health care tort reform.
  • Barriers to insurance company competition across state lines need to come down.
  • Obama Care never “followed the money” to find out who is actually profiting from the ever escalating healthcare costs in this country and how to get those factors under control.
  • Obama Care never got the immense amount of fraud and abuse in current government healthcare programs, Medicare and Medicaid, under control in order to save money to efficiently fund other government health care initiatives.
  • Obama Care never put serious research money towards curing the major diseases that drive high healthcare costs such as high frequency cancers and dementia type diseases.
  • You cannot resolve any problem unless you understand and address the underlying root causes. No difference here: Obama Care legislation never addressed these listed root causes and thus, has no chance of ever being successful.
But it is not just missing the root causes of our healthcare costs that makes Obama Care so horrible. It resulted in millions of Americans losing access to their favored doctors, hospitals, and insurance policies. It has caused insurance premiums, deductibles and co-pays to escalate substantially. It will likely add trillions of dollars to the national debt. It has exposed millions of Americans to higher than necessary identity theft chances. It has created government bureaucracies that are wastefully spending taxpayer wealth and being exploited by criminal elements. It has stifled economic growth and job creation.

These are just a sample of the types of idiocy that we have been reviewing for the past several years in this blog relative to Obama Care., To read those past posts, just enter the phrase, “the unfolding disaster,” in the search box above.

This week we will be reviewing the latest unfolding disasters from the worst piece of legislation ever written by Washington:

1) Remember all of the promises that were made about Obama Care in the beginning: many more people would be able to get much cheaper but higher quality health insurance policies in a very easy way via Obama Care exchanges. We have shown many, many times over the years that the exact opposite came true: the health insurance policies were more expensive and getting more expensive over time, the quality of the coverage was decreasing, and it was difficult if not impossible to navigate the exchanges’ computer systems to actually sign up for a policy.

Well, a new report from Employee Benefit Research Institute backs up our view of reality years after Obama Care took effect by finding that more and more small businesses are finding that they cannot afford to provide health insurance benefits to their employees. In 2015, only 22.7% of businesses with less than ten employees offered health insurance to their employees compared to 35.6% that offered health insurance in 2008, just before Obama Care was passed.

Businesses with between 10 and 24 employees saw the percentage of small businesses offering health insurance drop from 66.1% to less than 50% in that same time span and small businesses with between 25 and 99 employees so the percentage offering health insurance drop from 81.3% to just 73.5%. Thus, it appears that Obama Care, relative to America’s small businesses, had the exact opposite of what was promised and intended: health insurance became tougher and more expensive to obtain for employees of America’s small businesses.

In essence, the study concluded: “For many smaller employers, the business, labor/employment, and healthcare environments may have all changed the cost-benefit calculation against sponsoring health coverage—greater costs and risks, with reduced differentiating, attraction and retention benefits.” In other words, Obama Care may have caused the business environment to look at the provision of health insurance for employees as more expensive with less return for the money.

2) As always, we bring up the sad reality that Obama promised dozens and dozens of times that the Obama Care legislation would reduce the cost of health insurance for the average American family up to $2,500 a year. As always, we have constantly shown what a lie or deception that vow was.

And a recent article in the LA Times again shows how far off Obama was with that promise/lie. The paper reported that the premiums for Obama Care policies in California will rise 13% in 2017. This is more than three times the increase of the past two years and probably more than six times the rate of inflation.

The article by Melody Petersen and Noam Levey also recalled how the California Obama Care exchange had boasted that they had helped insure hundreds of thousands of people in that state while keeping costs down….until 2017. Premium costs had increased 4% in 2016 and 4.2% in 2015 as compared to the 17% likely increase in 2017.

The exchange blamed a number of factors for the large rate hike including the rising costs of medical care, including expensive specialty drugs and the end of a financial mechanism that held down rates for the first three years of Obama Care. In other words, in 2017 we will see the real, market based costs of health insurance in California and the cost is skyrocketing, the exact opposite of what Obama promised would happen.

Blue Shield of California asked for an average 19% increase in its Obama Care policies and Anthem asked for an average increase of 16%. These are the two largest companies offering Obama Care policies in the state. The article correctly points out that some policyholders may need to drop down to a lower cost insurance policy based on these cost increases. However, doing so would reduce the quality of care and may require them to find a whole new set of doctors as per their new policy, definitely a hassle.

Jamie Court, the president of the Consumer Watchdog organization in Santa Monica summed the mess nicely: “We’re paying more for less. Insurers are limiting access to doctors and hospitals while also demanding a higher price.”

But according to the article, California is not alone in this problem. They reporters cite a study of 14 metro areas that have already announced their 2017 Obama Care premium plans and found that the average increase will be 11%, more than five times what inflation has been. The changes in average premiums range from a decrease of 14% in Providence, R.I., to an increase of 26% in Portland, Ore., according to the analysis by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation.

None of these high increases should be a surprise. As we have often pointed out, the legislation never attacked the root causes of high healthcare costs in this country, most of which are listed above. Despite being years from when the legislation passed, Americans are still obese, out of shape, smoking too much, not exercising enough, etc. so it is no surprised that costs are still skyrocketing, the base causes are still out of control. And Obama's promise of reducing annual premium costs by $2,500 a year looks more and more absurd everyday.

3) Some Blue Shield organizations and Unitedhealthcare have already announced that they are dropping all of their Obama Care policies going forward or most of them. They have found that the costs of serving Obama Care policy holders were much higher than expected, resulting in significantly negative financial impacts to their business. This has had the double whammy of forcing existing Obama Care customers to find other insurance options and reducing competition in the markets served by these companies, causing costs to rise more easily in the absence of competition.

And now a recent article on the Daily Caller website states that another major insurance company, Humana, would be existing the Obama Care market due to negative financial results.

4) Let’s end today’s review of the unfolding disasters of Obama Care with some real life stories of real life Americans and how Obama Care has hurt them financially and healthwise. The source of these stories is the website, www.ourhealthcarestories.com. This is what is really going on underneath all of the high level numbers:

KATE, NEW MEXICO: We own our own business and pay for our own healthcare. As of January 1, 2014 the cost of a comparable healthcare policy tripled and our old policy was cancelled. We have been unable to afford the cost increase and as of May 2014 we have no insurance at all. This has been a very frustrating situation for us.

DEAN, PENNSYLVANIA: From Newsmax: Dean Griffin liked the health insurance he purchased for himself and his wife three years ago and thought he'd be able to keep the plan even after the federal Affordable Care Act took effect.

But the 64-year-old recently received a letter notifying him the plan was being canceled because it didn't cover certain benefits required under the law.

The Griffins, who live near Philadelphia on the Delaware border, pay $770 monthly for their soon-to-be-terminated health care plan with a $2,500 deductible. The cheapest plan they found on their state insurance exchange was a so-called bronze plan charging a $1,275 monthly premium with deductibles totaling $12,700. It covers only providers in Pennsylvania, so the couple wouldn't be able to see the doctors in Delaware whom they've used for more than a decade.

"We're buying insurance that we will never use and can't possibly ever benefit from. We're basically passing on a benefit to other people who are not otherwise able to buy basic insurance," said Griffin, who is retired from running an information technology company.

YVETTE, MAINE: "The least expensive of the new federal healthcare options will cost her $14,400 a year."

That will do it for today’s unfolding disaster that is Obama Care. Higher costs, less choice, more hassle, worst legislation ever. And more of the same tomorrow.

The Obama Era, Part 5 - Memories From The Worst Presidency Ever?

Late last year I thought it might be a good time to review everything that I remember about the Obama administration. He has been in office for seven years, seven long years that in my opinion have been horrific in so many ways. This was someone who entered office with approval ratings that were above 70% and who represented the so-called “hope and change” that many Americans were seeking.

This theme unexpectedly took four days to cover, that is how many failures, lies, threats, and narcissism of this President. The first post can be accessed at:

http://loathemygovernment.blogspot.com/2015/12/the-obama-era-part-1-memories-from.html

Seven years later hope has become very scarce and change has almost always been for the worst. Now, before someone says that I am just a sour grapes Republican, conservative, or neo-con, understand that I have never voted for a Republican for President in my life (I started voting in the 1970s). Up until 2010, I had never voted for Republican for national office in my life. I fully support gay rights and respect a woman’s legal right to an abortion. Thus, none of what you are about to read over the next few days comes from a Republican sour grapes perspective.

But unless you have had completely had your head in the sand or elsewhere, this has been the worst Presidency that I have experienced in my lifetime. From horrid legislation (e.g. Obama Care) to a failed foreign policy (e.g. Syria) to daily lawlessness on the part of this administration (e.g. use of unsecured email accounts by high ranking administration members), the ineptness and ineffectiveness of this administration is mind boggling.

Unfortunately, despite spending four days two months ago to cover the ineptness of this Presidency, we are going to need at least two more posts this week to cover another round of bad memories. Today we will start off with a list of 140 mostly broken promises that this President has presented to the country in his state of the union speeches in the first seven years of his Presidency.

The comes from the website, www.grabien.com, and includes the video history of Obama actually stating these broken promises in his own words. While we have covered many of these lies and deceptions in previous posts, it is certainly convenient to see all of these bad memories in one spot (keep in mind that these broken promises came only from eight Obama state of the union speeches, many other broken promises were made direclty by this President in other situations):

February 24, 2009

OBAMA: “I am pleased to say that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is now law. Over the next two years, this plan will save or create 3.5 million jobs. More than 90 percent of these jobs will be in the private sector. (...)

We have launched a housing plan that will help responsible families facing the threat of foreclosure lower their monthly payments and re-finance their mortgages. (...)

We will double this nation’s supply of renewable energy in the next three years. We have also made the largest investment in basic research funding in American history – an investment that will spur not only new discoveries in energy, but breakthroughs in medicine, science, and technology. We will soon lay down thousands of miles of power lines that can carry new energy to cities and towns across this country. And we will put Americans to work making our homes and buildings more efficient so that we can save billions of dollars on our energy bills. (...)

We will launch a new effort to conquer a disease that has touched the life of nearly every American by seeking a cure for cancer in our time. And it makes the largest investment ever in preventive care, because that is one of the best ways to keep our people healthy and our costs under control. (...)

It’s a commitment that’s paid for in part by efficiencies in our system that are long overdue. (...)

I held a fiscal summit where I pledged to cut the deficit in half by the end of my first term in office. My administration has also begun to go line by line through the federal budget in order to eliminate wasteful and ineffective programs. (...)

We have already identified two trillion dollars in savings over the next decade. (...)

If your family earns less than $250,000 a year, you will not see your taxes increased a single dime. (...)

We must also address the growing costs in Medicare and Social Security. (...)

We must also begin a conversation on how to do the same for Social Security, while creating tax-free universal savings accounts for all Americans. (...)

I have ordered the closing of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay.”

January 27, 2010

OBAMA: “Tomorrow, I’ll visit Tampa, Florida, where workers will soon break ground on a new high-speed railroad funded by the Recovery Act. ... (...)

An investment that could lead to the world’s cheapest solar cells or treatment that kills cancer cells but leaves healthy ones untouched. (...)

And that means building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country. (...)

It means passing a comprehensive energy and climate bill with incentives that will finally make clean energy the profitable kind of energy in America. (...)

Our approach would preserve the right of Americans who have insurance to keep their doctor and their plan. It would reduce costs and premiums for millions of families and businesses. (...)

Our approach would bring down the deficit by as much as $1 trillion over the next two decades. (...)

Starting in 2011, we are prepared to freeze government spending for three years. (...)

Like any cash-strapped family, we will work within a budget to invest in what we need and sacrifice what we don’t.And if I have to enforce this discipline by veto, I will. (...)

We will continue to go through the budget, line by line, to eliminate programs that we can’t afford and don’t work. (...)

That’s why I’ve called for a bipartisan fiscal commission. (...)

This can’t be one of those Washington gimmicks that lets us pretend we solved a problem. (...)

[The Senate] should restore the pay-as-you-go law. (...)

Publish all earmark requests on a single Web site. (...)

I will not give up on trying to change the tone of our politics. (...)

We should continue the work of fixing our broken immigration system -– to secure our borders and enforce our laws, and ensure that everyone who plays by the rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nation.”

January 25, 2011

OBAMA: “Some folks want wind and solar. Others want nuclear, clean coal and natural gas. To meet this goal, we will need them all. (...)

We should take on, once and for all, the issue of illegal immigration. And I am prepared to work with Republicans and Democrats to protect our borders, enforce our laws and address the millions of undocumented workers who are now living in the shadows. (...)

We’ll put more Americans to work repairing crumbling roads and bridges. We’ll make sure this is fully paid for, attract private investment, and pick projects based [on] what’s best for the economy, not politicians. Within 25 years, our goal is to give 80 percent of Americans access to high-speed rail. (...)

Within the next five years, we’ll make it possible for businesses to deploy the next generation of high-speed wireless coverage to 98 percent of all Americans. (...)

Get rid of the loopholes. Level the playing field. And use the savings to lower the corporate tax rate for the first time in 25 years – (...)

To reduce barriers to growth and investment —“ (...)

When we find rules that put an unnecessary burden on businesses, we will fix them. (...)

I am proposing that starting this year, we freeze annual domestic spending for the next five years. (...)

The health insurance law we passed last year will slow these rising costs. (...)

Still, I’m willing to look at other ideas to bring down costs, including one that Republicans suggested last year — medical malpractice reform to rein in frivolous lawsuits. (...)

We should give them a government that’s more competent and more efficient. (...)

There are 12 different agencies that deal with exports. There are at least five different agencies that deal with housing policy. hen there’s my favorite example: The Interior Department is in charge of salmon while they’re in fresh water, but the Commerce Department handles them when they’re in saltwater. (...)

Because you deserve to know exactly how and where your tax dollars are being spent, you’ll be able to go to a website and get that information for the very first time in history. (...)

If a bill comes to my desk with earmarks inside, I will veto it.” (...)
January 24, 2012

OBAMA: “Companies that choose to stay in America get hit with one of the highest tax rates in the world ... So let’s change it. (...)

And I want to cut through the maze of confusing training programs, so that from now on, people like Jackie have one program, one website, and one place to go for all the information and help that they need. It is time to turn our unemployment system into a reemployment system that puts people to work. (...)

I believe as strongly as ever that we should take on illegal immigration. (...)

I am proposing that every state — every state — requires that all students stay in high school until they graduate or turn 18. (...)

I’m directing my administration to open more than 75 percent of our potential offshore oil and gas resources. (...)

This country needs an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy that develops every available source of American energy. (...)

We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years. (Applause) And my administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy. (...)

I’ve ordered every federal agency to eliminate rules that don’t make sense. (...)

We’ll also establish a Financial Crimes Unit of highly trained investigators to crack down on large-scale fraud and protect people’s investments. (...)

I’ve asked this Congress to grant me the authority to consolidate the federal bureaucracy — (...)

We need to end the notion that the two parties must be locked in a perpetual campaign of mutual destruction. (...)

February 12, 2013

OBAMA: “On Medicare, I’m prepared to enact reforms that will achieve the same amount of health care savings by the beginning of the next decade as the reforms proposed by the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles commission. (...)

We’ll reduce taxpayer subsidies to prescription drug companies and ask more from the wealthiest seniors. (...)

We’ll bring down costs by changing the way our government pays for Medicare. (...)

We should do what leaders in both parties have already suggested, and save hundreds of billions of dollars by getting rid of tax loopholes and deductions for the well-off and the well-connected. (..)

Now is our best chance for bipartisan, comprehensive tax reform that encourages job creation and helps bring down the deficit. (...)

That’s why my administration will keep cutting red tape and speeding up new oil and gas permits. (...)

I propose we use some of our oil and gas revenues to fund an Energy Security Trust. (...)

I propose a “Fix-It-First” program to put people to work as soon as possible on our most urgent repairs. (...)

I propose working with states to make high-quality preschool available to every single child in America. (...)

I ask Congress to change the Higher Education Act so that affordability and value are included in determining which colleges receive certain types of federal aid. (...)

The time has come to pass comprehensive immigration reform — (...)

And raise the federal minimum wage to $9.00 an hour. (...)

Let’s offer incentives to companies that hire Americans who’ve got what it takes to fill that job opening, but have been out of work so long that no one will give them a chance anymore. (...)

Let’s put people back to work rebuilding vacant homes in run-down neighborhoods. (...)

We’ll give new tax credits to businesses that hire and invest. And we’ll work to strengthen families by removing the financial deterrents to marriage for low-income couples, and do more to encourage fatherhood (...)

By the end of next year, our war in Afghanistan will be over. (...)

Our government shouldn’t make promises we cannot keep — but we must keep the promises we’ve already made.”

January 28, 2014

OBAMA: “Let’s work together to close those loopholes, end those incentives to ship jobs overseas, and lower tax rates for businesses that create jobs. (...)

Take the money we save from this transition to tax reform to create jobs rebuilding our roads, upgrading our roads. (...)

I will act on my own to slash bureaucracy. (...)

My administration has launched two hubs for high-tech manufacturing. (...)

Tonight, I’m announcing we’ll launch six more this year. (...)

Let’s do more to help the entrepreneurs and small business owners who create most new jobs in America. (...)

We can unleash the next great American discovery – whether it’s vaccines that stay ahead of drug-resistant bacteria, or paper-thin material that’s stronger than steel. (...)

Let’s pass a patent reform. (...)

Businesses plan to invest almost $100 billion in new factories that use natural gas. I’ll cut red tape to help states get those factories built. (...)

Let’s continue that progress with a smarter tax policy that stops giving $4 billion a year to fossil fuel industries that don’t need it, so that we can invest more in fuels of the future that do. (...)

In the coming months, I’ll build on that success by setting new standards for our trucks. (...)

Let’s get immigration reform done this year. (...)

— an across-the-board reform of America’s training programs to make sure they have one mission: train Americans with the skills employers need, and match them to good jobs that need to be filled right now. (...)

Now, these 140 promises from the grabien.com website do have some inaccuracies. For example, there have been a number of nuclear power plant permits issued during his Presidency so that promise actually is true. But most of what he promised failed to come true.

This is especially true during the first two years of his Presidency and the promises made in those first two state of the union speeches. During that timeframe, Obama did not need a single Republican vote to pass any promise he put forth in the state of the union speeches since the Democrats had firm control of both houses of Congress. And yet, he and his failed leadership failed to get anything accomplished.

He talked about immigration reform but it never happened.

He talked about tax reform but it never happened.

He talked about helping companies and workers be more effective but it never happened.

He talked about working with Republicans but it never happened.

He talked about getting wasteful government spending under control but it never happened.

He talked about making government functions more effective and efifcient but it never happened.

Which is kind of a major aspect of this Presidency. He talked a good show but it, whatever it was at the moment, never happened. More bad memories tomorrow. The original website link for the this list canbe accessed at:

June, 2015, Part 3, The Unfolding Disaster That Is Obama Care: Congress Ducks Its Obama Care Edict, Costs Conintue To Go Up, Health Care Access Continues ToGo Down

Every month for the past three years or so we have had to take time out and review the latest insanity and disasters from the Obama Care legislation. Long ago it only took a day or so to cover it all. But then the law starting taking effect and the “unfolding disaster that is Obama Care” made it impossible to contain the bad news, the heartache, the rising costs, and the stress put on American families to just a day or two.

To review the past discussions on this horrid piece of legislation, enter the term "unfolding disaster" in the search box above or just page through previous month's posts on the right side of this page and click on the various references to Obama Care. Very quickly, as your read the past posts, you will see that this is easily the worst piece of legislation ever passed by Washington.

Not only has it disrupted lives, stymied the economy, and increased healthcare costs in this country, it never addressed the various root causes of high healthcare costs. Thus, by never addressing some of the root causes listed below, the legislation has virtually no chance of actually reducing healthcare costs in this country:

  • Americans eat too much of the wrong kind of food.
  • Americans smoke too much.
  • Americans do not exercise enough.
  • The healthcare industry in this country needs serious tort reform.
  • Federal government crop subsidies lead to our food chain being infested with unhealthy sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
  • Current government healthcare programs, Medicare and Medicaid, lose upwards of $100 billion a year to waste and criminal fraud, billions of dollars that could be used to reduce other healthcare costs in this country.
  • Cross state line insurance competition needs to be made easier to do.
  • The Obama effort never “followed the money” to actually map out where the high costs paid by Americans for healthcare actually end up.
Since Obama Care never addressed these root causes, we are still going to have those root causes resulting in higher and higher healthcare costs regardless of how well Obama Care is implemented. And since the prime objective of Obama Care was to reduce costs, the legislation will end up being a failure.

So with that gloomy set up, let’s see what Obama Care disasters unfolded in the past month or so.

1) One of the selling points of Obama Care, if there is such a thing, is that the politicians who voted to enact Obama Care, all Democrats, insisted that themselves and their staffs would have to abide by its tenets, what they were subjecting Americans to they would subject themselves to also. Bold talk, fairness and all that.

But of course, as is the case most of the time politicians open their mouths, this too was an empty promise. Congressional people lobbied the Obama administration to exempt themselves from the very law they enacted with the promise they would be forced to abide by.

As a result, a number of efforts are underway to force these Washington politicians to abide by their promise. One of those efforts is the Let Freedom Ring organization that is collecting signatures to do just that. The text of that petition is below and a link to sign that petition is below the text of their following letter:

On Wednesday June 17th, Let Freedom Ring is joining with Tea Party Patriots and other coalition partners to protest bureaucratic arrogance outside congressional district offices next week.

Dear [FIRSTNAME, Ringer],

Congress should not be exempt from Obamacare . When Congress enacted Obamacare with only Democrats voting for it, they did require themselves and the members of their staff to be subject to Obamacare instead of the gold-plated health plans they previously enjoyed at our expense.

But, in the same way that the IRS illegally directed that subsidies and mandates apply to people in states that did not set up State health care exchanges, the White House Office of Personnel Management (OPM) advised the leaders in Congress to submit deceptive and deceitful applications in order to illegally obtain for Members and their staff, health insurance subsidies that the law allows only for small businesses of less than 50 employees. Depending on how you count, Congress has from 13,000 to 20,000 employees.

Now, members of Congress and their office staff are receiving subsidies illegally, because an unidentified congressional staffer submitted a false application to the Washington, DC Small Business Exchange claiming that the United States Congress is a small business of less than 50 employees.

Unlike other aspects of Obamacare that need the action of Congress and the President or the courts to end unconstitutional and illegal action, this outrage needs only the congressional leadership to withdraw the false application and put Congress into compliance with the text of the Obamacare law.

But they have not done that yet. In fact, the Senate leadership, acting through Sen. Rand Paul, worked to defeat Sen. David Vitter’s motion in the Small Business Committee to subpoena the original false application to reveal the name of the staffer who signed it.

Let Freedom Ring is joining with Tea Party Patriots and other coalition partners to protest this act of bureaucratic arrogance outside congressional district offices next week, on Wednesday June 17.

I urge you to join this protest!

Sincerely,

Peter Knickerbocker
Executive Director

Colin A. Hanna

2) A recent article on the Affluent Investor website by Michael Pento lamented the fact that American households should have had a lot more money in their pocket over the past six months or so. Why? Well, the cost of oil fell from almost $100 a barrel in June, 2014 to almost $45 by the end of January, 2015.

According to his calculations, this dramatic drop in oil prices likely increased the average American’s household disposable income by about $750. This would have added between $100 and $125 billion into the economy, resulting in a substantial growth in the national GDP, an amount that should have increased GDP by half a percentage point. Sounds great, more money in our pockets resulting in greater economic growth.

But that reality never happened. Instead, there was actually economic contraction, not growth in the first quarter of 2015, a quarter that saw oil prices bottom out at half of its $100 run rate. What happened to that gas and oil windfall? According to Mr. Pento: “An increase in what the average American pays in health care costs as a result of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has swallowed all the savings from the fall in gas prices.” Specifically:

  • The increase in health care costs passed on by employers with 50 to 99 employees caused likely caused their workers to annually lose $935 in take home pay annually.
  • Companies with 20 to 49 workers were out an average of $827 annually.
  • Employees with individual insurance coverage now pay an average of $1,081 in annual premiums, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation/Health Research & Educational Trust report which is up a whopping 8.1% from a year ago.
  • Although the Obama Care tax on robust company insurance policies, the so-called “Cadillac Plans,” does not take effect until 2018, companies have already started adjusting their employee health insurance plans, switching their current plans to high deductible plans, plans that will and already have also increase employee health insurance costs.
  • Additionally, many Obama Care policy holders were hit with high tax bills this past spring when it was determined that their Obama Care subsidies were too high, resulting in additional tax payments and offsetting any financial gains from lower gas prices.
Thus, just when the economy got a gift in the form of lower oil and gas prices, a gift that should have kick started economic growth, Obama Care unfolds another way to screw up Americans’ lives, ripping the financial gain of lower oil prices from their grasp by replacing it with higher health insurance costs.

3) As most people know, Obama Care was passed without a single Republican vote. Which makes it pretty funny now, according to a recent Associated Press (AP) article that Democrats are now very concerned that high out of pocket costs for Obama Care policies are suppressing the nation’s ability to attain health care.

Which gets us back to a truism of Obama Care that we have talked about for years: the good news is you now have healthcare insurance. The bad news is that you cannot afford healthcare coverage.

This is being called “underinsurance” which is caused by the rise in the cost of insurance deductibles, the amount of actual medical costs that patients pay each year before coverage kicks in. Congressman Jim McDermott, a Congressional leader on health care, summed up this new Obama Care problem nicely: "We've got some 17 million more people covered ... but they can't access the care they seem to be entitled to. It costs too much to use the care. That's the deceptive part about it."

Several different organizations have recently focused on the issue and came to the same conclusions about Obama Care:

  • A Commonwealth Fund study found that 31 million adults were underinsured last year. Half of them had problems with medical bills or medical debt. Seven million were underinsured due to high deductibles alone. "The steady growth in the proliferation and size of deductibles threatens to increase underinsurance in the years ahead," the study concluded.
  • A study by Families USA concluded that one-quarter of the people with individual health insurance policies went without health care in 2014 because they could not afford the out-of-pocket costs, especially as it related to high deductibles.
  • The Center for American Progress found that employers have begun shifting the increasing burden of health care costs onto workers.
Just another unfolding Obama Care disaster. You have health insurance but you cannot get health care. Ony in Washington can you create massive new problems while not resolving the initial problem.

Another day, another set of fiascos from the worst piece of legislation ever written:

  • Congress continues to do a “do as I say not as I do” as they continue to illegally side step their Obama Care legislation requirements.
  • Health care costs continue to go up.
  • Health insurance access continues to go down.
More disasters tomorrow.
