February, 2018, Part 2, I Am A Global Warming Doubter and a Believer In Science: Stupid In Washington State and Censoring Those that Disagree

Every month we have enough material to return to a continuing theme in this blog, namely that “I am a global warming doubter AND a believer in science.” This became of interest because of people like Al Gore who fanatically and verbosely claimed that you had to be an idiot to not believe in manmade global warming. It has been my life belief that anyone that is that loud and that obnoxious is hiding something, that rather than argue facts and reality it is better to beat down and insult anyone who disagrees.

As we have dove into the whole issue of manmade global warming, or its new rebranded title of climate change, we found that Al Gore and people like him were guilty of a number of things:
  • Ignoring science and realities that did not support their opinions and positions.
  • Rather than have an adult conversation about climate, these types of advocates like Gore sank to the level of insulting those who dared look at ALL science by calling them a variety of names including racists, homophobes, terrorists, flat earth believers, and other slanderous names.
  • Continuing to insist that politicians step up their intrusions into our lives with higher taxes, more regulations, and more control of our freedoms and standards of living based on a shaky theory at best.
To see the past posts and the multitude of evidence that we have compiled that showed it is perfectly okay to be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, enter the phrase "global warming doubter” in the search box above or go through the monthly historical posts listed on the right side of this page.

Thus, let’s see the latest facts and science that prove you can be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, regardless of what Al Gore proclaims.

1) Despite the fact that global warming by any measure stopped about twenty years ago, global warming advocates refuse to give up. Despite the fact that every global warming forecast model over the years, from a wide variety of entities, were so wrong in predicting the earth's temperatures, global warming advocates refuse to give up. Given that wildfires, hurricanes, droughts, and other natural phenomena show no distressful climate changes, global warming advocates refuse to give up.

A perfect example of this refusal to believe science, data, and realities, is the current set of politicians in the state of Washington, led by its governor, Jay Inslee. The governor is pushing state global warming legislation that would in theory counteract manmade global warming and climate change, a problem that is becoming more and more of a myth everyday. The legislation would impose a carbon tax on carbon based fuels in the state.

But a February 1, 2018 article by Benjamin Zycher, writing for the National Review, showed that this inane plan is, “A Washington State Carbon Tax: All Pain, No Gain Washington Governor Jay Inslee:”
  • Even with very optimistic assumptions, the Governor’s plan would reduce the state’s greenhouse emissions enough to drop the overall temperature of the Earth by 2/1000 of a degree.
  • Thus, Washington state taxpayers would be more heavily taxed for a potential, best case impact on the Earth’s temperature of, again, 2/1000 of a degree.
  • Oh, and by the way, this reduction is not accomplished in a year, or two years, or a dozen years, it would not be accomplished until the year 2100, 82 years from now, 82 years in which Washington state taxpayers would be paying more in taxes for virtually no positive impact.
  • These estimates come from the EPA’s climate model, using very favorable assumptions, certainly not an entity famous for being a global warming doubter.
  • The article goes on to point out that two other famous efforts efforts to reduce carbon emissions, Obama’s strategies on climate control, which would have reduced the Earth’s temps by a whopping 25/1000 of a degree, and the Paris climate agreement that would have reduce the Earth’s temps by only 17/100 of a degree, according to the EPA models.
  • This assumes that numbers this small can be accurately read within in statistical variation, i.e. the noise of the measurement process might make any accurate reading that is so small impossible.
  • And replacing current fuel sources with so-called renewable fuel sources is not nearly as “clean” and Earth friendly as people like Inslee would claim if you look at the whole renewable energy provisioning process: there is heavy metal pollution from mining and the production of wind turbines and solar panels, there are negative impacts in nature on bird populations and land use, etc.
  • And the article correctly pointed out, as we have often in this blog, that despite the increase in greenhouse emissions over the past century, the impact on sea levels, polar ice caps, tornado activity, hurricane frequency and intensity, wildfires, droughts, and flooding has been consistent with long term trends over the centuries and the models that forecasted dire environmental impacts because of global warming have all proven to be wrong.
But these realities continue to elude the minds of politicians like Inslee. He wants to subject his constituents to higher taxes, upheavals in their lifestyles, and less freedom in their lives for what might be, under the most optimistic assumption set possible, an eight decade gain of 2/1000 of a degree benefit. Insanity.

Maybe Mr. Zycher, the author of the article sums up this political insanity best: “Climate change caused by GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions might prove to be a serious problem. It might prove to be a minor problem, and it might prove to be beneficial on net. We simply do not know, and the argument that very large costs ought to be imposed by climate policies upon the economy — that is, upon actual people — with trivial or unmeasurable benefits is deeply problematic. More research, more technological advance, and adaptation over time are likely to prove far wiser.”

But as we all know, associating the term “wiser” with any American politician is usually a fool’s bet.

2) Despite massive doses of reality (e.g. there have NOT been massive increases in the intensity and frequency of tornadoes, droughts, hurricanes, wildfires despite what global warming advocates claimed would happen) and massive failures of global warming forecasts to ever be correct, manmade global warming/climate change advocates still refuse to believe the reality in front of their faces and computer models.

Thus, rather than having open minds and admitting that maybe, just maybe they were wrong, they often go on the attack and try to suppress the freedom of speech rights of others and the sources of other statistical and scientific evidence that refute what they have spent their lives and careers on falsely defending.

Such was the case when they threatened and demanded that the American Museum of Natural reject funding and donations from people that dare not blindly believe what they believe. They would rather censor the opinions of others than engage in an adult conversation that considers all of the available climate data and research, as the following letter illustrates:

“The American Museum of Natural History in New York (AMNH) is a treasured and influential institution. Museums must be protected as sites that build understanding, help the public make meaning, and serve the common good. We are concerned that the vital role of science education institutions will be eroded by a loss of public trust if museums are associated with individuals and organizations known for rejecting climate science, opposing environmental regulation and clean energy initiatives, and blocking efforts to reduce pollutants and greenhouse gases.

Rebekah Mercer and the Mercer Family Foundation, political kingmakers and the financiers behind Breitbart News, are major funders of climate science denial projects such as the Heartland Institute, where they have donated nearly $6 million since 2008. The Mercer Family Foundation is also a top donor to the C02 Coalition and the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, institutions that assert that an increase in C02 emissions from fossil fuels will be a great benefit to plant and animal life on Earth. The renewed attention to Mercer Family Foundation chair Rebekah Mercer, who sits on the AMNH Board of Trustees (since 2013), spurs us to reissue a statement that scientists first co-signed in 2015:

“When some of the biggest contributors to climate change and funders of misinformation on climate science sponsor exhibitions in museums of science and natural history, they undermine public confidence in the validity of the institutions responsible for transmitting scientific knowledge.”

Since that original letter, we have seen welcome changes as many museums updated their policies related to fossil fuel financial interests; the American Museum of Natural History increased its focus on climate change concerns and global sustainability in its investments and business plans. But given the prior AMNH funding and board membership associated with Exxon Corporation and David Koch, the prominence of Rebekah Mercer and the Mercer Family Foundation as current AMNH donors and on the Board of Trustees can prompt skepticism and hunts for signs of corruption, no matter the quality of the museum priorities and exhibits overall.

Last week thousands of people shared a Twitter comment by environmental economist Jonah Busch, PhD, who pointed out misleading information on climate science in an Exxon-funded exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History. To its credit, the AMNH’s response was swift: it committed to updating the outdated information to reflect the best available science. But the initial online public anger showed that trust in the museum is undermined by the museum’s association with climate science opponents.

The most important asset any museum has is its credibility. This can be damaged by ties to donors and board members who are publicly known for investing in climate science obfuscation and opposing environmental solutions.

We ask the American Museum of Natural History, and all public science museums, to end ties to anti-science propagandists and funders of climate science misinformation, and to have Rebekah Mercer leave the American Museum of Natural History Board of Trustees.”

Typical global warming advocate strategy: if challenged on a statistical and scientific level, look to just shut up the opposition rather than continue to look for the scientific truth, as practiced by non-scientists like Al Gore and Barack Obama. To these people, the truth is secondary to not being proven wrong.

October, 2014 Part 8 Political Class Insanity: Funding Pot Use With Welfare, Obama Out of Touch, and Harry Reid's Misplaced Koch Paranoia and Priorities

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time to check in with the American political class to see what insanity they have wrought over the past month or so. It is always amazing to follow the exploits, quotes, and actions of our politicians and the government entities they operate to see how often idiocy, incompetence, and heartbreak are almost always the output from their actions.

We started dong these updates several years ago, usually taking one or two days every month to get all of their insanity covered. Unfortunately, over time, the insanity has seemed to accelerate almost exponentially, causing us to now have to take six or seven posts each month to get it all in. This month will be no different. As our foreign policy implodes, the economy stagnates, and the midtem elections approach, the insanity levels are intensifying daily.

To check out past instances of political class insanity in this post, simply go to the first week of each month and check out the posts that begin, “Political class insanity.” This is the eighth entry in this series for this month, with the first seven posts appearing over the past few days.

By needing eight posts to cover just one month of political class insanity, we have set a record for this blog. Never before have we needed so much time to review so much wasteful spending, ineffectiveness, failed promises and other political misdeeds and foul ups.

Thus, based on this crude measure, our politicians are likely getting worse over time. Given the state of the country, that is not a good thing to observe and live through.

1) Yesterday, we discussed the fact that it is a long stretch of the imagination to believe that the very rich and wealthy people serving in Congress and the White house have any clue how many challenges the average American family faces each day. Their wealth, high paying salaries, and insulation from the everyday life of the rest of us often leads them to think that life is great outside of the D.C. Beltway since it is certainly great for them inside the Beltway.

The President recently showcased that ignorance in recent speeches relating to the economy where he boasted that job growth had been steady and that most Americans were better off now than five years ago. Things are going great in the economy, according to his rosy view point.

But are you and I and the rest of America better off under his economic guidance or misguidance. After his speeches, the press took over with the following reality headlines and stories:

Reagan’s seminal campaign question: ‘Are you better off than you were four years ago?’ … But a similar message has failed to resonate for Obama primarily for one reason: …average family incomes have slipped.” (Reuters, 9/22/14)

The Obama Economy: ‘US Wages Have Gone Precisely Nowhere’

Bureau of Labor Statistics: “Real average hourly earnings increased 0.4 percent, seasonally adjusted, from August 2013 to August 2014.” (“Real Earnings, August 2014,” Bureau Of Labor Statistics, 9/17/14)

“US wages have gone precisely nowhere over the past year. Inflation-adjusted US hourly earnings growth was 0% in July compared to the previous year, according to just released stats.” (Quartz, 8/19/14)

“…anemic wage growth is dampening price pressures. Average hourly earnings adjusted for inflation rose 0.4 percent in August. Even so, they have risen only by that same amount over the past year.” (Reuters, 9/17/14)

Economic Policy Institute: “Inflation-adjusted wages have fallen for every income group in the past year except very low-paid
workers, says an Economic Policy Institute study out Wednesday.” (USA Today, 8/27/14)

“Wages were stagnant or declining at all education levels, and those with the most schooling experienced the largest drops, according to the study. Hourly pay fell 2.7% for Americans with advanced degrees, 1.6% for college graduates, 1% for those with some college, 1.1% for high school graduates and 0.6% for people lacking a high school diploma.” (USA Today, 8/27/14)

Thus, according to the news reports and government numbers, everyone is getting slammed by this economy and those that are the highest earners and the most educated are getting slammed the hardest. So much for “being better off” as stated proudly by the President. We are not better off, with the only ones being better off, and more out of touch, are those that are making the bad economic policies in Washington, policies that protect them and emasculate us.

2) While the following example of wasting and abusing taxpayer wealth involves a relatively minor amount of money, it is a good example of how poorly government welfare programs are operated and how easy it is to divert taxpayer wealth from noble intentions to totally wasteful means.

According to reporting by the website, Colorado Watchdog, Colorado state regulators and politicians are ignoring a two-decade old state law prohibiting welfare recipients from receiving cash from ATMs in liquor stores and casinos. In the past two years, nearly a half-million dollars being withdrawn from such locations. This does not include the $12,000 that have been withdrawn from ATMs within Colorado marijuana dispensaries.

Apparently, the Colorado Department of Health and Human Services is aware of the violations, but doing nothing to stop them, according to the watchdog site. A spokesperson for the regulation agency in charge stated that the amount wasted by welfare recipients is too small to worry about.

Really? Think about how many meals for Colorado’s homeless population could be provided by half a million dollars. How many drug addicts could be treated for half a million dollars. How many nights in a shelter could be provided for homeless folks for half a million dollars.

Yes, it is a small amount of wasted taxpayer wealth in the big scheme of things. But it would probably not be a small amount for a hungry, drug addicted or homeless Coloradan.

3) Senate Majority leader Harry Reid has been on the warpath against the Koch brothers, American business owners who contribute to a lot of political campaigns and causes, none of which are in alignment with Reid’s political views and ideology. He states openly that their outlandish amounts of money given to political causes are endangering our democracy and need to be stopped.

Reid has attempted to pass Senate legislation that is intended to not only stifle the Koch brothers Constitutional right to participate in the American political process but also would eventually stifle the First Amendment rights of all Americans.

He has devoted so much time to this Koch hatred that he has allowed over 300 House passed bills to sit unattended, undebated, and unvoted on in the Senate. He has put political means and hatred above the best interests of the country.

He has also failed to mention a number of realities relative to the Koch brothers political contributions:
  • As far as Koch political campaign contributions, they rank 59th in the list of campaign contributors. In other words, there are 58 other entities that contribute more to the downfall of democracy than the Kochs, despite the Reid hatred.
  • The biggest contributor to campaign races, according to the OpenSecrets website, is ActBlue, a PAC that’s raised an immense amount of money, $121,099,109, since 1989 (99% of which has gone to Democratic candidates).
  • Ranked 2nd on the OpenSecrets list is the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, another entity whose contributions are almost surely all for Democrats like Reid
  • The National Education Association, rounds out the top 3 with $60,510,533 raised since 1989, of which 57% went to Democrats like Reid.
  • Other entities and individuals that contribute far more than the Koch brothers are various unions that are also likely mostly Democrat supporters.
Thus, one reason why America is in such bad shape is that Reid is chasing the 59th campaign contributor to political activities at the neglect of actually developing and passing legislation to help America. An insane set of priorities for a Senate Majority Leader.

And in reality, if you look  at other activities of the Koch brothers, they are doing much more for humanity with their resources than Reid, or the other 500 or so politicians in Washington, are doing with their resources, according to a recent report form the Independent Journal Review:
  • Koch Industries employs about 100,000 globally (60,000 in the US alone).
  • Koch companies support more than 200,000 US jobs and “about $11.8 billion in compensation and benefits.”
  • Of Koch companies’ 60,000 US employees, approximately one-third are unionized.
  • Koch Industries and the Charles Koch Foundation’s partnership with the United Negro College Fund has resulted in a “$25 million grant that will provide nearly 3,000 merit-based awards to African American undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctorate students seeking scholarship assistance.”
  • Globally, Koch companies “have earned 917 awards for safety, environmental excellence, community stewardship, innovation, and customer service.”
  • Koch Industries has sponsored the Special Olympics in Wichita, Kansas for the past 33 years.
  • “Through the Helping Heroes initiative, Koch companies have contributed nearly $230,000 to emergency response organizations in communities where they operate since 2011.” Koch’s Georgia- Pacific Bucket BrigadeTM program, “has contributed more than $1 million to fire units in communities where the company operates to meet critical needs, as well as provide educational materials to schools.”
  • Through the David H. Koch Charitable Foundation, Koch has contributed or pledged “more than $1.2 billion to cancer research, medical centers, educational institutions, arts and cultural institutions, and to assist public policy organizations.”
  • David Koch’s charitable foundation also provided $100 million to New York Presbyterian Hospital to build a new ambulatory care center, as well as $28 million to research causes.
  • Yet another major Koch grant contributed $100 million to research cancer at MIT.
  • Flint Hill Industries (a Koch company) earned a Clean Air Award from the Environmental Protection Agency
Again, given the 59th ranking of the Koch brothers in political contributions in the context of their other contributions to humanity, I maintain that it is Harry Reid who has a bad set of priorities that is hurting America vs. the 59th worst financiers of the American political process.

That will do it for this month’s political class insanity. We have set the record by needing a full eight days to get through all of the wasteful pending, stupid quotes, ineffective governing, bad priorities, most out of touch, and other nonsense from the worst set of American politicians to ever hold office.

My fear is that we set the record while the Washington politicians were off on a two month vacation, not returning to Washington until mid-November. What happens when the return and pick off where they left off their insanity back in September? Heaven help us

Political Class Myth Busting, Part 3: Voter ID Laws Are Not Racist, Koch Brothers Are Not Evil, and Al Qaeda is NOT On The Run

We are having a little fun over the past two days at our politicians’ expense, exploring the many myths that the politicians of this country would like us to believe. You see, if we believe the myths that they create than we are more likely to vote for them to resolve the unreal issues and problems associated with these myths.

[Note: I thought we could finish the myth deconstruction in two posts but we will need at least today to finish up what is becoming a very interesting and apparently widespread problem, courtesy of the American political class.]

But what if what they tell is not the true reality? What if we are getting all worked up and headed in the wrong direction for a mythical problem that does not exist or for a mythical solution that resolves nothing? All it does is send us chasing our tails while the same inept politicians get reelected over and over based on nothing more than their own greed, their rigging of the election processes, and the myths that they feed us and control us with.

So starting yesterday, we are going to look behind the myth curtail and reveal what is the true reality. With that truth we may finally start resolving some of the major issues of our times. Lord knows the political class has failed miserably over the past fifty years in eradicating poverty, winning the lost war on drugs, fixing our failing public schools, securing our borders, etc.

Maybe it is because we have allowed them to work on myths that they created and not the true problems of our age. Keep in mind the following wise words of Groucho Marx over the next few posts: “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies.” Sounds like myth building to me.

1) Democrats and Harry Reid in particular have been in a rage and temper tantrum recently because business people known as the Koch brothers had the nerve and audacity to legally contribute to political causes and candidates that were not democrats or Harry Reid. Reid is in such a lather that he wants to destroy the First Amendment and its free speech guarantee to punish the Koch brothers.

Wow, these must be some really evil dudes if Harry thinks it is worthwhile to destroy our freedom of speech in this country. Or is the Koch brothers evil just a political myth by the liberal wing of the political class? Are they that evil?

Probably not, and a prime piece of evidence to refute Reid’s evil Koch brother myth was a recent announcement by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF that it had recently received a $25 million grant from Koch Industries, Inc. and the Charles Koch Foundation. The partnership and $25 million will be used to provide nearly 3,000 merit-based awards to African American undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctorate students seeking scholarship assistance.

It will also help strengthen the 37 UNCF-member Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by helping them offset funding shortfalls from other sources.

Specifically, the major elements of the donation include:
  • $18.5 million to be used to provide scholarships for exemplary students with demonstrated financial need and an interest in the study of how entrepreneurship, economics, and innovation contribute to well-being for individuals, communities, and society. Funds will also be used to provide an annual summit, mentorship opportunities, and school programs.
  • $6.5 million is provided for general support to HBCUs and UNCF, with $4 million set aside for the 37 UNCF-member HBCUs and their students to provide financial relief related to the Parent PLUS loan crisis.
My gosh, Reid is right. These are evil, evil men. How dare they give tens of millions of their dollars to African American students to further their education! They must be stopped.

No, they should not be stopped exercising their First Amendment rights and their human rights to help others, regardless of the myth Harry Reid weaves so for political gain.

2) Remember the 2012 election campaign? President Barack Obama was fond of claiming that Al-Qaeda is “on the run.” Was and is that a political myth to serve a political purpose or was that reality?

A recent data intensive study by the Rand Corporation would say that this is surely a myth and the reality is that Al-Qaeda is far from on the run. Instead, the premier terror organization and its offshoots may actually be flourishing. The Rand study quantified the following realities:
  • The number of Islamic terror groups has risen 60% since 2010, a period of time that was concurrent with the Obama administration being in office, it has nothing to do with the Bush administration.
  • There has been a 300% increase in terrorism attacks since 2010 according to the Rand Corporation count.
  • In total, there were 950 terrorism attacks worldwide since 2010.
If you add in the resurgence of an Al Qaeda faction that now threatens to overrun Iraq, it is pretty clear the Obama’s prior to the 2012 elections that Al Qaeda was on the run was mjurely mthical in nature, probably concocted to help win an election than to face the reality of a growing threat of terror around the world.

3) Two days ago we showed that more stringent voter id laws in Georgia coincided with a substantial increase in voting by minorities. Yesterday, we discussed the fact that the same thing happened in Texas, tighter voter id laws and rules coincided with higher voting rates by minorities.

This runs counter to myth perpetuated by the likes of Eric Holder, Barack Obama and other liberals that voter id laws are bad for the voting rights and abilities of minorities, that somehow requiring an American to prove who he or she is is somehow a terrible injustice. Thus, we had two examples and the realities and numbers to prove that this is just another political myth meant to improve political careers rather than have fair elections.

To put a third stake into the heart of this myth, consider a recent poll of 1,025 registered voters that was conducted by Anderson Robbins Research and Shaw and Company research during the second week of May, 2014:
  • While over of the African Americans included in the poll supported the President on a wide range of issues (overall - 86%, economic matters - 89%, Obama Care - 83%), a majority (51%) of those African Americans also supported state level voter id laws and rules.
  • This would imply that African Americans support the President on a range of issues but break away significantly from him, and the myth of voter id laws, when it comes to voter id laws, being much more accepting of them than the President.
  • There was also strong majority support in this poll among every individual demographic that was surveyed, which included political affiliation, gender, race (black and white) and educational attainment.
  • Overall, 70% of those surveyed supported "state laws that require voters to show a valid form of state- or federally-issued photo identification to prove U.S. citizenship before being allowed to vote," while only 27% opposed them.
Thus, the majority of African Americans, at least in this survey, which should be representative of the general African American population, would agree that the myth that voter id laws suppress African American voting is indeed a myth. Consider what some prominent African Americans had to say about the overall myth and this survey in particular:

"Requiring identification to prove who you are at the polls just makes good sense," said Project 21's Christopher Arps of Missouri, the founder of the black conservative social network Move-on-up.org. "Voter ID laws protect the overall integrity of our electoral process and safeguard every citizen's right to cast a ballot in his or her own name."

"A majority of black Americans in this poll found nothing inherently racist about showing an ID to vote. It discredits the progressive talking point that black Americans uniformly see voter laws as racist and an attempt at voter suppression," said Project 21's Kevin Martin, a small business owner and U.S. Navy veteran. "It also shows that progressives who claim to represent the black community are not listening to us on this issue. Perhaps it is because they only seek to use our community to further their own agenda."

Project 21's Horace Cooper, a former professor of constitutional law and former leadership staff member for the U.S. House of Representatives opined: "It is critical to the notion of self-government that only lawfully registered voters participate in elections, and that is why over seven of 10 Americans support it. While Attorney General Eric Holder tries to convince the media that voter ID is somehow anti-black, even blacks disagree. The truth is that voter ID gives all Americans -- black, white, yellow and brown -- the confidence that their vote matters and it will count."

"It should come as no surprise that a majority of blacks support voter ID," said Horace Cooper. "Voter ID is a popular and commonsense tool, popular with all Americans that ensures that real bona fide Americans are casting the votes to determine who our elected officials will be and what policies they will promote."

That will do it for today. Today, we destroyed the myth that just because an American contributes to political opponents does not make them evil, as witnesses by the charitable ands generous work of the Koch brothers. We crushed the Obama myth that Al Qaeda :was on the run” with real life data from a world-renowned consulting firm. And we continued to crush the myth that voter id laws are inherently anti-minority and suppress minority voting rates.

Believe it of not, we still have a few more myths to crush. We have crushed nine so far over the past three days but need one more day to crush the last two myths, racism in America and income inequality. Again, our reason for crushing these myths is so that the country can finally put is focus and energies towards resolving real problems that face the majority of Americans rather than tripping down the mythical rabbit holes that politicians dig for us, holes that benefit their political careers but distract us from reality.
