School Shootings - Where A Teacher Might Succeed Where The American Political Class Has Failed

Over the years we probably have discussed hundreds of instances where the American political class has failed to resolve a problem facing the country and Americans. They either never resolve a problem, they make the problem worse, and in the few cases they actually resolve a problem, they do it far more expensively and take much longer than any rational person would expect.

A perfect example of their ineptness is protecting schools from deranged killers. The first school shooting of recent significance was out in Columbine, Colorado which happened during the Clinton Presidency. Since then, there have been way too many other school shootings and mass killings. And despite the efforts of the American political class, they have accomplished nothing to stop these shootings.

If they had been capable of resolving this problem, it would have stopped mass school shootings years ago. Instead, politicians do a knee jerk reaction which results in more gun control that does nothing to stop future shootings.

They are incapable of understanding root causes of a problem and then attacking those root problems in a rational and sane manner. If you do not understand root causes of any problem, you have very little chances of actually fixing a problem. For decades, politicians did not understand the root causes that leads to a young person to find a gun and slaughter kids.

Unfortunately, this inability to understand school shooters, has resulted in a recent school massacre in Texas. And the knee jerk  reaction to the shooting was to focus on gun control AGAIN. This approach never worked before and will not work now.

However, I recently came across a technique that a long time teacher uses in her classroom with her students. Please read what she does and I think that you will agree that she indeed understands a root cause of a potential school shooter. If only our politicians could think about root causes and bring some elegance to resolving this horrible problem. Obviously , their approach since the Clinton years has been an abject and fatal failure.

*****************************************

Interesting and simply brilliant approach to inclusion:

Every Friday afternoon Chase’s teacher asks her students to take out a piece of paper and write down the names of four children with whom they’d like to sit the following week. The children know that these requests may or may not be honored. She also asks the students to nominate one student whom they believe has been an exceptional classroom citizen that week. All ballots are privately submitted to her.

And every single Friday afternoon, after the students go home, Chase’s teacher takes out those slips of paper, places them in front of her and studies them. She looks for patterns.
Who is not getting requested by anyone else?
Who doesn’t even know who to request?
Who never gets noticed enough to be nominated?
Who had a million friends last week and none this week?

You see, Chase’s teacher is not looking for a new seating chart or “exceptional citizens.” Chase’s teacher is looking for lonely children. She’s looking for children who are struggling to connect with other children. She’s identifying the little ones who are falling through the cracks of the class’s social life. She is discovering whose gifts are going unnoticed by their peers. And she’s pinning down- right away- who’s being bullied and who is doing the bullying.

As a teacher, parent, and lover of all children – I think that this is the most brilliant Love Ninja strategy I have ever encountered. It’s like taking an X-ray of a classroom to see beneath the surface of things and into the hearts of students. It is like mining for gold – the gold being those little ones who need a little help – who need adults to step in and TEACH them how to make friends, how to ask others to play, how to join a group, or how to share their gifts with others. And it’s a bully deterrent because every teacher knows that bullying usually happens outside of her eyeshot – and that often kids being bullied are too intimidated to share. But as she said – the truth comes out on those safe, private, little sheets of paper.

As Chase’s teacher explained this simple, ingenious idea – I stared at her with my mouth hanging open. “How long have you been using this system?” I said.

Ever since Columbine, she said. Every single Friday afternoon since Columbine.

Good Lord.

This brilliant woman watched Columbine knowing that ALL VIOLENCE BEGINS WITH DISCONNECTION. All outward violence begins as inner loneliness. She watched that tragedy KNOWING that children who aren’t being noticed will eventually resort to being noticed by any means necessary.

And so she decided to start fighting violence early and often, and with the world within her reach. What Chase’s teacher is doing when she sits in her empty classroom studying those lists written with shaky 11 year old hands - is SAVING LIVES. I am convinced of it. She is saving lives.

And what this mathematician has learned while using this system is something she really already knew: that everything – even love, even belonging – has a pattern to it. And she finds those patterns through those lists – she breaks the codes of disconnection. And then she gets lonely kids the help they need. It’s math to her. It’s MATH.

All is love- even math. Amazing.

Chase’s teacher retires this year – after decades of saving lives. What a way to spend a life: looking for patterns of love and loneliness. Stepping in, every single day- and altering the trajectory of our world.

*******************************************
An interesting and apparently sane, rational, and root cause approach to the problem. This does not mean we should not harden our schools against attacks. This does not mean that we should not monitor social platforms for hints at future behavior. This does not mean that school  personnel and local police departments should not have a plan in case of an  attack (something that did not happen in the latest Texas shooting).

But this teacher's approach to understanding how kids might go wrong merits serious consideration.  Lord knows that politicians approach to the problem has not been serious... or successful. You either understand root causes or fail in any aspect of life and reality.

Our Horribly Broken Election Process, Part 2 - The First Half Of A Solution

We have never been big fans of any American politician in this blog. We find them either cowardly, stupid, or greedy and often criminals. The list of their transgressions in each of these categories probably numbers in the hundreds when you go back through our previous posts.

Probably their worst trait of all is that they rig the system to make themselves rich, comfortable, and often above the law. They give themselves high pay and great benefits. They are in session in Congress for less than half the year. They are given multi-week vacations that they try to call “recesses.” They find ways to do insider trading on stocks and companies based on non-public information relative to potential and real legislation. And they spend so much time doing this stuff for themselves that they never get around to resolving the major issues facing the American public.

Several days ago we did a post on one particularly egregious abuse of the system by politicians:

https://loathemygovernment.blogspot.com/2018/02/our-horribly-broken-election-process.html

Today, rather than do specific examples of abuse, we are proposing a set of basic changes that need to be made to our political processes that hopefully will get people in office that want to focus on resolving the big issues facing Americans today rather than have the existing types of politicians continue to remain in office where their only focus is self enrichment:

1) As we laid out in the post above, one of the first changes we need to make to our political processes involves leftover campaign funds. What should happen is that after a political campaign is over, regardless of whether or not that candidate won or lost, he or she should have no more than six months to liquidate their leftover campaign funds.

Over that six month period they should be able to pay off any legitimate outstanding debts as a result of the campaign and at the end of the six months, any remaining funds should either be returned to those that donated or the candidate should donate those funds to legitimate charities.

Those paying off of debts should be reasonable and pass the reality check. Those leftover funds should not be paid out to relatives and friends of the candidate just to enrich those that are close to the candidate. Also, as mentioned above, the funds should be liquidated even if the candidate won the election. He or she should start from scratch for the next election from a raising campaign funds perspective. There should be no carry over from one campaign to the next. Such existing carry over helps ensure that useless incumbents always seem to get re-elected since they have such a war chest of funds gathered over the years.

2) Once elected, a winning politician should put their investment portfolios in a blind trust and have no contact with the manager of that blind trust until they are at least one year out of office. Politicians often have secret, insider access to potential legislation that gives them an insider track on lucrative investments. In the private sector, such insider information is often abused and a crime. Inside Congress, such access to insider information is just another easy way to get rich.

Now, some people would say that this was already taken care of under the Obama administration when the STOCK legislation was passed. However, shortly after this legislation was passed, and which much less fanfare, another bill was passed which essentially gutted the enforcement capability of the STOCK law and rendered it toothless.

Politicians should not be able to get rich off of secret government information. Make them give up control of their investments to a portfolio manager they have no access to while in office and for a time period afterwards in case they know of pending legislation that they could still leverage once out of office.

To see how abusive politicians are of this insider information conduit, go to:

3) No politician should be able to receive campaign funding from anyone who does not have the ability to vote for that politician. For example, someone who is running for Senator from Kansas should not be able to accept campaign funding from someone living in New Hampshire. Someone running for Congress in a Congressional district in Utah should not be allowed to accept campaign funding from someone living in Oregon.

Very rich people and organizations have a lot of money to sway elections even though they don't reside where those politicians live. This distorts the election process and deprives local citizens the right to fairly select the candidates they want to serve them. If you cannot vote for a candidate, you should not be able to fund a candidate.

4) Speaking of funding, the only entities that should be able to fund a candidate’s campaign are private citizens. PACs, unions, corporations, trade organizations, etc. should not be able to fund and in many cases unfairly sway elections away from local citizens. The Constitution and Bill of Rights guarantee freedom of speech to individuals, they do not guarantee freedom of speech to organizations.

5) If an elected member of Congress or the Presidency has a net worth of over $3 million, he or she should not be able to receive a salary or benefits at the expense of the American taxpayer. Many, many people in Congress are multi-millionaires, they do not need to draw a salary of $174,000 or so a year or receive extensive benefits, they can afford them without being a drain on the Treasury.

We have a $20 TRILLION national debt, denying ultra rich Washington politicians a salary and benefits will not cure that $20 TRILLION national debt but symbolically at least it would show that they are serious about getting out of control government spending under control.

6) Many current Washington politicians have been in office for decades and have presided over the worst performing government in our history. Despite over spending their revenue streams by trillions and trillions of dollars, they have been unable to resolve any of the major issues of our times. They have allowed the Federal government bureaucracy to grow like a cancer and become totally ineffective in serving the American people.

Which leads to a dire need for term limits. “One and done” should be the Washington creed. No decades long residency in Congress where the only thing that incumbent members of Congress do is enrich themselves and take long vacations.

Because really, seriously ask yourself: given the ineptness of today’s Washington politicians, how much worse could it get if they all got thrown out of office because of term limits and we started with a clean slate of people? At least then we might have a fighting chance to get something, anything resolved.

That will do it for today’s recommendations to fix what is broken in our political processes. The second half of our recommended changes will follow shortly.

Stupid Laws By Stupid Politicians By State

More times than we would like to remember we have discussed the reality that American politicians are not smart enough, dedicated enough, or industrious enough to understand root causes of problems facing Americans today. As a result, they either put forth remedies that make a current problem worse or they focus on solving problems that no one really cares about.

This reality really comes into focus when you consider a recent article on the Self Reliance Central website. They went to the trouble of researching and determining the dumbest state or local laws in every state. I have pulled out some of the most ridiculous ones and listed them below.

When reading these inane laws, ask yourself if that is the type of effort and problems you wanted the local politicians to focus on when they were elected. I am assuming that the politicians that put forth effort to enact these types of nonsense did not fix the schools in their state or city. They did not get their broken infrastructure repaired. They did not resolve the problems of drug addictions of their citizens or get crime under control.

Instead they worked on the following non-problems:

  • In Alaska it is legal to convert a picnic table or bench into a boat as long it has life preservers and is legally registered as a boat.
  • In Arizona it is illegal for donkey to sleep in a bathtub. Really?
  • In Arkansas it is somehow illegal if you mispronounce the state’s name.
  • It is against the law to eat a frog in California who died during a “frog jumping contest.” Did not know that frog jumping was so big in that state.
  • In Florida, pregnant pigs must be allowed to roam freely and not penned up during their pregnancy term. This law applies only to pigs and is actually enshrined in the state’s Constitution.
  • In Pocatello, Idaho, it is illegal to be out in public and NOT smile, according to a 1948 city ordinance.
  • In Illinois anyone under the legal drinking age of 21 can legally drink if they are currently enrolled in a culinary program. I would bet that culinary programs are big in Illinois.
  • In Indiana it is illegal to have a hypnotist work on you unless you have a doctor’s referral or you are trying to lose weight or stop smoking.
  • In Topeka, Kansas, it is illegal to scream in a haunted house.
  • In Kentucky it is illegal to dye a duckling blue and put it up for sale….unless more than six ducklings are being sold at one time. Would love to know the thought process that said one is bad but six is okay.
  • In Louisiana you can be fined $500 if you instruct a pizza delivery person to deliver a pizza to someone without them knowing it was coming.
  • In Massachusetts it is illegal to have targets at shooting ranges that are in the shape of humans.
  • In Minnesota it is illegal to grease up a pig if the purpose of greasing the pig up is to try and capture it. Party poopers in that state.
  • In Mississippi a woman can go to jail if she delivers two illegitimate children, either at the same time or at different times.
  • It is illegal in Missouri to remove mattress tags (horrors!) or bring an unlabeled mattress into the state.
  • In Reno, Nevada, it is illegal to lie down on a public sidewalk.
  • New Hampshire, it is illegal to gather up seaweed on a beach during night hours, I am assuming it is okay to do it during the day
  • In New Jersey, it is illegal to wear a bulletproof vest while murdering, kidnapping, robbing, or raping. Which raises the obvious question, where and when is it legal to wear your bulletproof vest?
  • In North Carolina it is illegal to use a secret handshake to agree to or do illegal things. Can we assume the crime rate plummeted once secret handshakes were outlawed?
  • In North Dakota it is illegal to attempt or perform human cloning in the state. I wonder if that is a big problem up there, successful human cloning?
  • In Oklahoma it is illegal to participate in horse tripping in way or form, with the penalty being a $2,000 fine or one year in jail. Again, did horse tripping crime rates go way down once this law was passed?
  • If you are a convicted felon you are not allowed to operate a bingo game in the state of Pennsylvania. Because so many felons like to operate bingo games?
  • In South Carolina it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to play pinball. Maybe these S.C. youth should move to Illinois where they can enroll in a culinary class which allows them to drink alcohol AND play pinball.
  • In Texas, the state constitution says an atheist cannot hold any public office.
  • In Vermont, it is illegal to dress a horse up in a disguise or to disguise it as something other than a horse. Why would anyone want to dress up and disguise their horse?
  • In West Virginia it is illegal to use a ferret to hunt any kind of wild animal. I did not know ferrets could do that, even though it is illegal in West Virginia.
  • In Wisconsin it is illegal to serve margarine in restaurants (unless a customer asks for it) or in prisons unless the margarine is going to be used for medical purposes. I am curious to know what possible medical purpose margarine serves.
The entire list of every state can be accessed at:

So the next time you realize your kids are not getting a good education, that you hit three pot holes on your way to work, that crime is out of control, keep in mind that your elected representatives are hard at work putting forth and wasting their time and your tax dollars enacting the above ludicrous laws. Term limits anyone?

Vote Like You Have Never Voted Before

A little diversion today from the typical political class insanity that we usually review in this blog. No Obama Care disasters, no stupid spending by Washington, no insulting political comments and slurs. Today I want to make the case that everyone who legally can, should go out and vote this Tuesday and more importantly, vote like you have never voted before.

What do I mean by that, “vote like you have never voted before?” Consider what the current set of Washington politicians has done to us:
  • They have given us a national debt of almost $18 trillion, over $50,000 for every man, woman, and child in this country, and left us with nothing to show for it.
  • They have implemented economic policies that have stuck us with meager economic growth relative to historic standards, have caused the real unemployment rate to be over ten percent for years, and have forced over 45 million Americans to rely on government food assistance to survive.
  • They have failed to resolve a major issue in decades including the lost war on drugs, failing public schools, the lack of a national energy policy and strategy, and ever rising health care costs.
  • They have failed to seal our borders resulting in elevated levels of illegal immigrants and an ever rising threat of terrorism within our borders.
  • They have implemented a so-called health care reform law, Obama Care, that has caused millions and millions of Americans to lose access to their preferred insurance plans, doctors, and hospitals, has aggravated an existing doctor shortage, has caused most peoples’ health insurance premiums and deductibles to rise dramatically, has increased hospital emergency room caseloads, has raised the threat of identify theft substantially, and has no chance of actually reducing health care costs in this country since the root causes of those high costs were never addressed by the legislation.
  • They have lorded over a bloated Federal bureaucracy that wastes money like there is no tomorrow, a bureaucracy that allows major social programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid to head unimpeded into insolvency, and accepts mediocrity and criminal behavior from Federal employees without consequences.
  • They have allowed this same Federal government to trample ordinary citizens’ Constitutional rights, including the First Amendment when the IRS and the current administration denied freedom of speech rights to conservative causes and the Fourth Amendment when various agencies of the Federal government spied on millions and millions of Americans’ communications without due process, warrants or any defendable reason.
  • And worst of all, the current set of politicians have graced us with a gridlocked government where getting themselves reelected takes a huge priority over formulating solutions, where naming post offices is about the extent of their ability to enact any kind of positive legislation.
This is what the current set of politicians, both Democrat and Republicans have done to us. So next Tuesday, vote like you have never voted before: vote for a Libertarian, vote for a Socialist, vote for a Constitutional Party representative, vote for a Green Party candidate, vote for yourself if need be.

Given what the Democrats and Republicans have done to this country, given how ineffective they have been, how much worst could it be if a few Libertarians or Socialists actually got elected? I would rather have a passionate Libertarian and a passionate Socialist debate the issues and arrive at a consensus that might actually benefit the citizens of this country than continue with the gridlock and selfishness of the current crop of Washington politicians. How much worse could it get?

If a Libertarian or Socialist option is to radical for your taste, than how about voting against all incumbents? The old saying that if you are not part of the solution than you are part of the problem certainly applies here. Many of our current politicians have been in office for 20, 30 and even 40 years.

If they are not to blame for the problems listed above than who is? Without term limits, voting out incumbents is the only way to get fresh, new blood into the process, a process that has atrophied horribly. Because really, how much worst could it get with new people coming to Washington? At least we could still get Post Offices named and maybe even resolve an issue or two. Wouldn’t that be refreshing. But it only happens if you vote like you have never voted before.

The Funnier Side of Politics and Government - The Most Inane Laws By State
