December, 2019, Part 2, Political Class Insanity: Kamala Does Not Get Democracy, Another American Dies Because of "Sanctuaries" and San Francisco Is Still A Cesspool,

It is another month which means it is again time to review the latest political class insanity from Washington and around the world. Political class insanity takes many forms including the wasting of taxpayer wealth, criminal fraud within government programs, inane and stupid political quotes and actions, the inability to create and implement effective and efficient government programs, stupid and ill performing economic policies and strategies, and other forms of insanity that continue to evolve and surprise and shock us.

Let’s get started:

1) We have often talked about how local city politicians have turned the once beautiful city of San Francisco into a cesspool. It is a city no where it is not illegal to defecate, urinate, or shoot up illegal drugs in broad daylight on city streets. It is a city where the homeless population has grown to almost 30,000 with no solution in sight on how to fix any of these problems.

Journalist John Stossell recently did a film documentary on the deteriorating city conditions. His report included the following random yet sad observations and quotes from those in the know about the downfall of a great American city:

• Stossell came away from his investigation with the impression that San Francisco is now the slum by the bay.
• The city found it necessary to create a permanent maintenance staff, “Poop Patrol,” that goes around the city on a daily basis to scoop up human defecation from the city’s streets.
• Stossell quotes an urban planner in his reporting: “One urban planner told me, “I just returned from the Tenderloin (a section of San Francisco). It’s worse than slums of India, Haiti, Africa!””
• Stossell’s on site reporting from the city caused him to compare the living conditions in the streets to slums he has seen firsthand in Haiti and India.
• Quoting one local resident: “There’s shit everywhere. It’s just a mess out here.”
• A lot of the thousands of homeless on the streets are victims of mental illness but San Francisco authorities mostly leave the mentally ill on the streets to fend for themselves.
• In 2015, there were 60,491 formal complaints to the police about vagrancy, aggressive panhandling, and going to the bathroom in public and yet only 125 people out of the over 60,000 complaints were ever arrested.
• On resident told Stossell: “It’s nasty seeing people shoot up -- right in front of you. Police don’t do anything about it! They’ll get somebody for drinking a beer but walk right past people using needles.”
• Crime has also risen significantly with 85 cars broken into on a daily basis throughout the city.
• Although the homeless problem is reaching crisis proportions in the city, for decades politicians have tried, and failed, to fix the problem: current U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein was once mayor of the city and she once proudly announced that she was putting the homeless in hotels: “A thousand units, right here in the Tenderloin!” It did not resolve the problem.
• Current California governor Gavin Newsom was mayor of the city when he boasted that “We have already moved 6,860 human beings.” It did not resolve the problem.
• In 2018, former city mayor Mayor Mark Farrell proclaimed, “We need to fund programs like Homeward Bound.” It did not resolve the problem.
• Stossel points out that strict and sometimes idiotic zoning laws and regulations make it impossible for a developer to build low income and moderate income housing which contributes to the homeless crisis.
• As an example: “For years, developer John Dennis has been trying to convert an old meatpacking plant into an apartment building -- but it has taken him four years just to get permission to build. “And all that time, we’re paying property taxes and paying for maintenance. I will do no more projects in San Francisco.””

Just another example of politicians that make bold promises that always end up being unable to resolve any issue of any kind. Decades and billions of dollars are wasted and in the case of San Francisco, the situation just got worse. Insanity.

2) We have often discussed the reality that politicians in Washington are so out of touch with reality and life outside of their lavish and exclusive lifestyles inside the Beltway. For example, we once reported that, “Congresswoman, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell who issued the following insane observation: Illegal immigration is “really not affecting American people.””

That of course is an inane, so out of touch observation and perception of reality. Every year thousands of American citizens are killed, raped, or robbed by illegal immigrant criminals. I am pretty sure that the victims and families of victims would disagree quite strongly with her idiocy. 

And even those not directly affected by violent criminal acts by illegal immigrants, end up paying over $100 billion a year to handle our illegal immigration crisis, from detention centers, to law enforcement, to housing, to food stamps, to crime, to funding pregnancies of illegal immigrants. Recent Department of Justice statistics showed that 64% of Federal criminal arrests are of non-citizens, most of which are likely illegal immigrants. I am sure that the rapes, murders, robberies and other crimes these 64% committed did affect a lot of American people.

To that list of American citizen victims that the Congresswoman claims do not exist, we add another victim in a sad piece of irony:

• Sean Buchanan had been a long time advocate for illegal immigrants.
• He had often cited Trump’s position on illegal immigration as racist and compared Trump to Hitler.
• Sadly, Mr. Buchanan’s life came to an end when he was driving his motorcycle on a Colorado highway and illegal immigrant Miguel Ramirez Valiente drove into Mr. Buchanan’s lane and killed the father of five.
• Valiente had avoided deportation for being here illegally because he was hiding in a so-called “sanctuary church.”
• Valiente was arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving with a revoked license.
• ABC News Channel 7 Denver interviewed a close acquaintance of Valiente who claimed that he was “an alcoholic and an abuser.” 
• He had previously been arrested for reckless endangerment in 2011 and domestic violence in 2016. 

Again, a sad, tragic story for his family. But just another example to show how Congresswoman Mucarsel-Powell is clueless when it comes to understanding what is really going on in the country. And if you cannot understand the reality of a problem you have no chance of resolving that problem. And Congress has shown many times how inept it is when it comes to creating a viable and SAFE immigration plan for the country.

3) Kamala Harris is a U.S. Senator from California. Up until the past week or so she was also a Democratic Candidate for President. She is now a failed Democratic candidate for President since she has shut down her effort due to lack of funds and more importantly, a lack of a cohesive plan for the country that resonated with any type of American. 

Now, Kamala Harris is also a black woman. Thus, as expected, many liberals are attributing her failed campaign to the standard liberal boogeymen, racism and sexism and not the fact that she failed miserably to connect with the country.

And maybe one reason she did not connect is that even though she is a Senator, she has a very ignorant grasp of what it means to live in a free country. At a recent political gathering she discussed the high cost of healthcare in this country, a real issue that affects millions of Americans. That discussion is a good thing.

Unfortunately, her plan to attack the high costs makes her look more like a Soviet dictator than someone in Congress who has promised to defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights along with our freedom. She promised the crowd that if drug companies did not reduce the cost of drugs she would take drastic, totalitarian action: “I will snatch their patent. So that we will take over. And yes we can do that. Yes, Yes, we can do that. Yes, we can do that. It’s a question of if you have the will to do it. I have the will to do it.” “We” in this case is the government and the politicians that operate it.

Uh, no Kamala, you can't do that. And if you tried you would be destroying the very fabric of this country, leading the government to forcibly take anything you own, anything you have developed, anything that you invested in at the whim of some politician who does not understand democracy. Charge too much for drugs, we will confiscate your proprietary patents that you probably invested millions of dollars to create. Charge too much for food, will confiscate your farm and operate it as a government bureaucracy. Charge too much for gasoline, we will confiscate your refineries.

You get the idea, the government, which is really nothing more than a set of usually lame and ignorant politicians, cannot go around stealing private property in whatever form it is in. For a potential Presidential candidate to think that it is okay is very, very scary. Also, everytime that has been done, government confiscation, form the old Soviet Union to current Venezuela, the results have been a catastrophic decline in the quality of life for citizens since as we all know, government stinks at doing anything efficient and effective.

So today we learned that: A Senator and Presidential candidate has no idea what living in a democracy and a free country entails, a Congresswoman has no clue how illegal immigration often violently affects Americans, and San Francisco liberal politicians STILL have no idea how to operate a major city, turning it a public cesspool and illegal drug shooting gallery. More insanity to follow.

The Perversion and Death Of An Unbiased Press In this Country. Part 2

Record numbers of Americans are pretty disgusted with both candidates for president this year. Between the out of control quality of Trump to the lying and greedy Clinton, we are not faced with anywhere close to good choices from the Democrats and Republicans for President this year.

But we have faced incompetence before in Jimmy Carter. We have faced criminality in Richard Nixon. And we survived as a nation. But we have likely never faced in any Presidential campaign is the corruption and biased reporting of the press in this country. Rather than providing the facts and realities of life, we are now faced with press and journalism outlets that have a point of view to push rather than the truth. 

And that is what scares me more than the incompetence of Trump and Clinton. Without the truth that the press has previously been relied on in the past, we are forced to question everything and adjust our views not based on the realities but on the historical reporting bias of each news outlet.

To show you how biased, crooked, and dangerous news reporting is today, consider the following recent instances where journalism has the distinct color of yellow:

1) Before giving actual examples of bad journalism, let’s consider what a recent Gallup poll says about how much Americans trust what the press media tells us today. According to their recent opinion poll, only 32% of respondents said they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media today:

While the trend in trust has been slowly declining over time, Gallup thinks that the dramatic one year drop from 40% in 2015 to only 32% in 2016 is because of the misreporting and bias going on for the 2016 Presidential election. 32% is the lowest level of trust since at least 1997 and the 8 point drop in one year from 2015 to 2016 is the second largest drop since 1997. It is the highest percentage drop since 1997.

Trust among Republicans has dropped especially fast, from 32% in 2015 to only 14% in 2016. Trust among younger Americans dropped 10 points in one year.

Our democracy can survive bad Presidents, it has done so in the past. Not sure it can survive a perverted and corrupt press and media industry where truth is secondary to ratings and the political leanings of high ranking media executives and owners.

2) ABC News recently got into the biased reporting act when it abruptly cut the live feed of a Trump speech after he said something that ABC News did not like relative to the ABC favored candidate, Hillary Clinton. Trump was making a speech in Daytona Beach, Florida and said that Hillary Clinton “should get an award as the founder of ISIS.” Typical campaign rhetoric, making an accusation that has at least some credibility. However, immediately after those words came out of his mouth, the ABC News feed went blank and then returned with only the ABC News logo and some background music.

Now, it could be that ABC simply had technical problems. However, since it does not appear that they apologized for the technical difficulties and I am a member of the 68% that Gallup found does not trust the media, I am going with the theory that Trump dared to accuse Hillary Clinton of some bad things that ABC decided to censor on the spot by cutting the Trump speech feed.

2) Yesterday, we had a couple of examples of CNN, the Clinton News Network, misbehaving when something happened that did not fit their prejudiced view of what they wanted to report. In one instant they inserted a word into a Donald Trump quote that he did not say and in another instance they cut out a Hillary Clinton statement that they did not want the public to hear. 

Today, let’s examine a CNN host that cut to a commercial break when an interview he was doing did not go according to the pre-conceived and biased manner he wanted to go:

• The host of a CNN news show, Don Lemon, was doing a live interview of Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke, focused on the riots in Charlotte, North Carolina.
• Clarke has been very anti-Black Lives Matter activities and philosophies even though he is an African-American himself.
• During the interview, it is clear that Lemon keeps on wanting to promote a dialog that shows Black Lives Matter in a far more favorable light than how Sheriff Clarke holds that organization.
• Every time that Clarke tries to make a point about how bad Black Livers Matter is, Lemon tries to justify the organization in some way, only to be further rebuked by Clarke.
• Thus, rather than let a valid, expert opinion be stated, Lemon eventually gets so frustrated that he cannot get the answer he obviously wants from the sheriff that he just cuts the discussion short and goes to a commercial break.
• Things do not get any better when the come back off of commercial break, with the sheriff stating facts and realities about police and African Americans’ relationships and Lemon denying the facts that this subject matter expert is expected to bring to Lemon’s show.
• Lemon goes on to claim that he is just an unbiased reporter, that he simply reports realities which is pretty obvious he is not if you view the whole interview. The African American sheriff shuts down the interview with a very powerful statement that I am sure was not consistent with the biased message Lemon wanted to get: “There is no place in American discourse for that sort of vile, vitriolic hate coming out of this ideology. This has fueled and fanned the flames of this anger toward the American police officer. There’s only one group in America—one, Don—that cares about the lives of black people in these urban ghettos. It’s the American police officer, who goes out on a daily basis and puts their life on the line to protect who? Black people.”

Just another way that CNN remains a very biased and untrustworthy news sort, cutting off debate and discussion that is counter to their own skewed views and objectives. The entire discussion can be accessed at:

3) One last piece of reporting bias and, surprise, surprise, it also comes from CNN. This one is particularly interesting in that the CNN producers actually cut off one of their own reporters who dared to say something, anything even vaguely critical of Hillary Clinton. 

CNN reporter, Brianna Keilar, was on the road reporting on a speech that Clinton had just given in Springfield, Illinois as she filed the following report: “Largely Hillary Clinton’s comments here today, John, were based around the recent violence that we have seen. The police-involved shootings of black men in Minnesota, in Louisiana, and the killing of white police officers by a black gunman in Dallas. That was really what she based her comments on around today.

And remember Hillary Clinton has some vulnerabilities herself. Even as she calls for criminal justice reform because of her support in the 1990s for anti-crime legislation that ultimately helped contribute to this era of mass incarceration that she now speaks out again–.”

Uh-oh, just as Keilar was starting to report on a very valid and historically accurate point that would show Hillary in a potentially bad light, her live feed went dead and the CNN producers threw up a silent black screen with some minimal graphics that referred to Donald Trump as “dangerous.”

Studio host John Berman then came back on with the following quote before the show moved on to another, totally different topic: “We just lost Brianna Keilar who was in Springfield, Illinois where Hillary Clinton just spoke.” 

Did they lose her, which of course is possible due to technical difficulties, and it was just a coincidence that they lost her just as she was pointing out some Clinton downside issues, or were they continuing their recent history of protecting the Hillary Clinton image? Given that I am part of the 68% discussed by Gallup above and the history of CNN’s biased reporting, it is my humble opinion that they cut away intentionally in a true Pravda like manner.

From misquoting to trying to force an answer out of a TV guest to creative editing and lying to “technical difficulties,” more than two thirds of us out in the country do not believe that we can trust anything the media and press tells us today.

Remember, once the politicians and the press unite to protect and further each other’s interests, you are no longer living in democracy, you are living in a version of the Soviet Union where the government controls the news vs. the news controlling the government and today’s news reporters and journalists are nothing more than modern day Pravda workers.

May, 2014 Political Class Insanity, Part 3: Rewarding Government Incompetence Via Bailouts, Budgets, and Failures

This is our third post in this series which is covering the political class insanity and idiocy that has arisen in just the past month or so. The first post in this series can be accessed at:

It is unknown how many more days we will need to be dedicated to the ongoing insanity of our politicians but I am quite sure we will not wrap everything up today.

1) Yesterday, we discussed the fact that the final bill has come in for the taxpayer bailout of General Motors and that the company’s ineptness and the government’s meddling cost the American taxpayer just over $11 billion. This comes out to the equivalent of every U.S. household sending a check for about $100 to the Detroit car maker to cover its mistakes.

According to an article in Moneynews on May 2, 2014, the final bill on their entire set of buyouts has now been tallied. Including the General Motors loss, the overall American taxpayer loss on the bailouts has come to about $40 billion. This is the equivalent of every American household sending a check out for about $350 to bailout the big auto makers and banks.

The really distressing part of this final report is the fact that the American taxpayer still faces a potential, worst case liability of $190 billion that could be needed to bailout Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This potential hit comes out to the equivalent of each household paying out about $1,650 each to cover this ticking time bomb, all because the political class meddled in the housing market without really knowing what they are doing. Pathetic.

2) It is amazing how many different ways government officials can screw things up in so many different ways. According to an audit done by the EPA’s Inspector General, the EPA's international affairs office lost track of about 200 passports required to be in its possession, according to a new report from the agency's watchdog. The EPA Inspector General found that 199 of the 417 employee passports reportedly in the possession of the Office of International and Tribal Affairs couldn't be located.

The office failed to enforce its own passport guidance of having staff return passports after travel. The report found: "Lack of compliance with agency guidance may put the agency in the position where sensitive personally identifiable information is not being adequately protected." The EPA agreed with the audit findings, agreed that it had violated its own rules, and was taking steps to remedy the situation. 

All of which raises a few questions:

• The EPA has been around for decades, has it not figured out how to keep control of sensitive information like passports?
• Has any fraud or crimes been committed as a result of the organization losing track of almost two hundred passports?
• Has anyone been fired (doubtful) for not following the organization’s own rules and guidelines?

Only the political class and the government it operates can screw up in so many different and unique ways, with not accountability for the screw ups.

3) Political class insanity is not confined to Washington. The Associated Press recently reported that state Democrats in Illinois are trying anyway possible to approve $100 million in Illinois taxpayer wealth to woo those responsible for deploying the Barack Obama library to deploy it to Illinois.

The problem, as reported by the Associated Press, is that the state has roughly $7 billion in past due vendor bills and a $100 billion shortfall in its employee pension programs. The state’s financial position is so serious that the governor wants to make permanent a three year-old tax increase, which was set to expire next year, to avoid making huge budget cuts. 

Given the dire financial situation, isn’t it pretty insane to divert $100 million to build a library? Talk about a sad state of priorities and please, do not tell me added tourism dollars will more than offset the $100 million cost. First of all, all politicians always underestimate the actual costs on every government expense so you can be pretty sure that the $100 million estimate will eventually balloon to several times that size. And second, do we really think the world’s citizens are going to beat a path to south Chicago to visit the Obama library? Doubtful. 

3) With all of the political class shenanigans going on, it is no surprise that we have been reporting and discussing many recent Inspector General reports that have uncovered much of that insanity. The Treasury department, which houses the IRS, had a recent audit uncover the fact that more than 2,800 IRS employees are facing disciplinary actions.

While the lack of discipline by almost 3,000 IRS employees is distressing enough, the Inspector General report also uncovered the following disgraces:

• Those 2,800 employees facing disciplinary actions received more $2.8 million in monetary bonus payments. 
• Those 2,800 employees also received 27,000 worth of additional time-off bonuses and more than 175 quality step increases (which allows employees to receive promotions faster).
• More than 1,100 of the 2,800 employees have “substantiated Federal tax compliance problems” yet they still received over $1 million in cash awards, $250,000 in time-off awards and 69 quality step increase awards within the same year the IRS proved the employees hadn’t fully paid their income taxes.

Thus, in the unreal world that is Washington and the Federal government, misbehaving can get you a lot of incremental pay at taxpayer expense along with a lot of other extra perks even if you do not pay your income taxes. Good work if you can get it. Imagine how much IRS employees get that are NOT facing disciplinary actions.

4) Although the numbers are not very large, the growth rate of these numbers is increasingly worrisome. 231 Americans gave up their citizenship at the end of the George W. Bush administration in 2008, the end of the Bush administration. By 2012, just four years later, that annual 231 number had more than quadrupled to about 1,000 and had tripled to 3,000 by 2014. 

Again, the numbers are not large but the growth in the number of Americans giving up on their country is distressing. These are Americans who most likely have become so fed up with the conditions and government and political class insanity that they are willing to give up their citizenship, move to a foreign land, and forego their past for what is increasingly being viewed as better opportunities overseas. 

That trend is probably not because the Washington political class has improved economic opportunities in this country, has respected and increased freedom in this country, or have shown any penchant for caring for the country before taking care of the personal ego and financial needs. Such a shame when our politicians are so bad that citizens are willing to forego their homes and citizenships for a better life elsewhere.

5) Speaking of bad cost forecasting by the political class, consider the unfolding nuclear disaster in South Carolina. As the Soviet Union dissolved two decades ago, Russian and U.S. officials decided that reducing each country’s nuclear arsenal would be a good idea and that the nuclear material taken from the disabled nuclear weapons should be processed into nuclear fuel rods that could be used in nuclear reactors to generate electricity. The final agreement included plans to convert 34 tons of weapons grade plutonium into fuel rods to be used on commercial reactors.

The U.S. conversion was going to take place in South Carolina. The initial estimate to complete the job was put at $1 billion and was to begin in 2007 and be finished by 2016. However, as always, the political class did another lousy job at cost forecasting:

• The U.S. Department of Energy has already spent $5 billion on the project despite the overall original estimate of $1 billion.
• The Department estimates it will take another $6 to $7 billion to finish the job just to build the facility to do the conversion.
• It will take at least another $20 billion to do the conversion once the facility is built.
• It will take another 15 years just to complete the conversion, at least 13 years beyond the original estimate.
• Thus, the entire effort will cost about $30 billion, assuming no more cost surprises, which is about 30 times higher than the original estimate and 13 years later than the original time estimate, assuming there are no more time delays.

Unreal that any estimate or forecast could be off by so much. As a professional statistician and business forecaster, I know I would have been fired long ago if my forecasts were off by a factor of 30. One has to believe there was intention deception to get the project started by low balling the cost estimate, that is how far off and pathetic the cost estimation was.

But the insanity does not end there relative to the Department of Energy:

• The Department of Energy has put a hold on the project for now with no date on when to restart the program, essentially wasting billions and billions of dollars with absolutely nothing to show for it, as described by Edwin Lyman, a senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists: "It’s a major fiasco. Billions of taxpayer dollars have been wasted, it’s a classic boondoggle."
• But it is not the first time the Department has screwed up badly. Costs for a nuclear waste treatment facility in the state of Washingotn have almost tripled over the original cost estimate.
• A uranium processing plant in Tennessee was supposed to cost $1 billion but will likely cost $11 billion and is currently running a whopping twenty years behind schedule.
• And the final insult to injury relative to the South Carolina effort: the cost of uranium from other sources has fallen by about 70% over the years making any fuel rods that eventually come out of the South Carolina conversion effort priced far to high to be useful to commercial reactors.

A lot of detail to prove again that one should never, ever trust a government program’s cost estimate, whether it comes from Washington politicians or government bureaucrats. The next time that a government program or project comes in on budget and on schedule will be the first time it comes in on budget and on schedule.

So let’s review. The political class has wasted billions on bailouts, it has wasted billions on energy programs that never succeed, they have lost passports, they reward unruly IRS employees and they cause Americans to give up their home and heritage to move overseas. Seems about right for one day of political class insanity, tomorrow is another day of the same.
