July, 2018, Part 1, I Am A Global Warming Doubter and A Believer In A Science: Forecasts That Went Horribly Wrong and The Massive Failure Of Paris

Every month we have enough material to return to a continuing theme in this blog, namely that “I am a global warming doubter AND a believer in science.” This became of interest because of people like Al Gore who fanatically and verbosely claimed that you had to be an idiot to not believe in manmade global warming. It has been my life belief that anyone that is that loud and that obnoxious is hiding something, that rather than argue facts and reality it is better to beat down and insult anyone who disagrees.

As we have dove into the whole issue of manmade global warming, or its new rebranded title of climate change, we found that Al Gore and people like him were guilty of a number of things:

• Ignoring science and realities that did not support their opinions and positions.
• Rather than have an adult conversation about climate, these types of advocates like Gore sank to the level of insulting those who dared look at ALL science by calling them a variety of names including racists, homophobes, terrorists, flat earth believers, and other slanderous names.
• Continuing to insist that politicians step up their intrusions into our lives with higher taxes, more regulations, and more control on our freedoms and standards of living based on a shaky theory at best.

Thus, let’s see the latest facts and science that prove you can be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, regardless of what Al Gore proclaims.

1) As a trained professional statistician, it comes natural to me to go back in time to see how well a forecast predicted reality. Given how good, or badly, your forecasts performed allows you to improve your forecasting skills and accuracy. According to a June 23, 2018 article by Shawn on the Fix This Nation website, that is exactly what some folks have been doing for the major climate forecasts of the past thirty years:

• The Wall Street Journal had climatologists Patrick Michaels and Ryan Maue compare climate forecasts from thirty years ago to today’s actual results.
• James Hansen of NASA back in 1988 started a lot of this climate change/global warming nonsense when he declared he found a “high degree of confidence” in the relationship between human-produced CO2 and the “greenhouse effect and observed warming” of the atmosphere.” 
• Most of Hansen’s predictions said that the Earth’s temperatures would increase steadily over the next thirty years as humans threw more and more CO2 into the atmosphere. 
• However, only his Scenario C was close to being true and that forecast said that the Earth’s temps would NOT increase substantially in the coming decades.
• Forecast models developed by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on average forecasted twice as much warming than what actually happened as did other major “expert” forecasts.
• Hansen also did forecasts that also lamely predicted that the number of hurricanes and tornadoes would increase as a result of CO2 that was going to be produced by mankind.
• Of course, those forecasts were also epic failures with Michaels and Maue concluding that not only were Hansen’s forecasts wrong the reality was “the opposite may be true.”
• Michaels and Maue also concluded that, “The list of what didn’t happen is long and tedious.”

The forecast failures were “long and tedious,” the predictions never came close to being accurate over the test of time. And yet, many liberals like Al Gore and Obama still insist that man made global warming and climate change is reality. When everything you claimed would happen did not happen when do you let go of the fantasy?

2) We have often discussed the reality that the infamous Paris Climate Agreement was a disaster and that, fortunately, Trump pulled the U.S. out of the agreement. The only people that were going to have to make sacrifices were Americans, that the big and growing polluters (e.g., China, India) and others had no fat in the climate fire. Obama sold the U.S. down the road to satisfy his own ego.

Trump took some serious heat from both inside and outside of the country for correctly pulling us out of the agreement but Nicolas Loris and Bryan Cosby, writing for the Western Journalism website on June 2, 2018, updated everyone on how well, really how badly, other countries were doing relative to their meager commitments within the agreement, one year after Trump’s withdrawal:

• Despite the claim of climate alarmists that coal is bad for the environment and climate change, worldwide coal usage actually went UP 1% in 2017 despite the effort of the Climate Agreement signees to reduce coal usage.
• A lot of this coal usage increase was because Asian countries’ increase in coal fired electricity.
• World wide there are 1,600 coal fired electricity generating plants under construction, plants that will burn enough coal to produce 840,000 megawatts of electricity.
• If the Paris agreement was any good I doubt that it would allow for the use of 1,600 NEW coal fired power plants.
• And it is not just China and India increasing their usage of coal, smaller countries like Turkey and Indonesia have also struggled to meet their Paris goals since they need the cheap and quick use of coal to meet their growing economy needs.
• Pakistan signed onto the Paris agreement but that agreement is quite useless: “Given the future economic growth and associated growth in the energy sector, the peaking of emissions in Pakistan is expected to take place much beyond the year 2030. An exponential increase of (greenhouse gas) emissions for many decades is likely to occur before any decrease in emissions can be expected.”
• But it is not just Pakistan who is contributing nothing to the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement: “Germany, a world leader on climate action, has failed to cut emissions and has actually seen emissions rise during the past two years. Germany may even have to buy its way out of a binding European Union agreement to lower emissions in the coming years.”
• Brazil expects its emission to continue rising until at least 2030, Japan will continue increasing its use of coal since nuclear in that country has a bad rep, and Poland and South Korea also plan on using more coal going forward.

But all of this proves how bad the whole agreement process was from the beginning: although many countries are falling short of the commitments they made just a few short years ago there are no ramifications or penalties. Even infamous NASA scientist James Hansen, see above discussion, called the whole process “a fraud” in 2015, claiming that, “There is no action, just promises.”

Commitments already being missed, the widespread and increasing use of coal across the world, and no penalties for failure. Trump got this one right.

Still a good thing to be a global warming doubter and a believer in science. More to follow.

January, 2018, Part 4, I Am A Global Warming Doubter and a Believer In Science: Threatening Those With Words and Actions Who Are Non-Believers

By looking at real data from real scientists who did real research we now know that:

1. The global warming trend stopped about 20 years ago.
2. We know that the severity and number of hurricanes and cyclones worldwide is declining.
3. We know that the severity and number of wildfires worldwide is declining.
4. We know that the severity and number of droughts worldwide is declining.
5. We know that the severity and number of major floods worldwide is declining.
6. We know that rather than disappearing, the ice caps are still there and are still wide ranging and very cold.
7. We know that global sea levels have risen very little compared to what was predicted.
8. And most of all, we now know that EVERY major man made global warming/climate change forecast regarding temperatures, hurricanes, wildfires, droughts, floods, the ice caps and sea levels has been very wrong, embarrassingly wrong.

Given the realities of the failure of global warming advocates in the face of real data, real, science, real research and basic reality, you would have hoped they would have packed up their bags and moved on to other, hopefully real issues facing humanity. 

But alas, rather than admit they were wrong and go away, consider what some global warming advocates are saying, threatening, slandering, and generally acting like two year olds who did not get their way. In the process of the rants and threats you will read below, consider what a disservice they have done to the world of science by cherry picking only select data and research that satisfy their own biased views rather than looking at all the data and research:

• Two years ago, then Secretary of State John Kerry took a swipe at those of us that are global warming doubters but believers in science: “The science tells us unequivocally, those who continue to make climate change a political fight put us all at risk. And we cannot sit idly by and allow them to do that.”
• Mr. Kerry: the science is not unequivocal, see the three links above and is that a veiled threat of violence, “we cannot stand idly by and let them do that?”
• Kerry went on to again try and assert that “science” tells us that global warming is real when we know a ton of scientists that would vehemently disagree: ”So when science tells us that our climate is changing and human beings are largely causing that change, by what right do people stand up and just say, ‘well, I dispute that, or I deny that elementary truth?’”
• But this is what some people do when they cannot argue facts, they either threaten and name call or they try to assert they are on the right side of the facts when they are not but stating things like “when science tells us.”
• In a direct attack on the First Amendment, somehow a U.S. Senator, Sheldon Whitehouse, actually declared that those who are global warming doubters but believers in science should be arrested and prosecuted under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), you know the law used to prosecute real gangsters and real criminals. 
• This is a real dangerous, freedom restricting idea to have, declaring that Americans should be thrown in jail for voicing an opinion.
• The Talking Points Memo website once published an article (that apparently has since been removed,) that had the ominous title, “At what point do we jail or execute global warming deniers.”
• This article actually promoted violence against fellow human beings that dared to not be a global warming advocate: “What is so frustrating about these fools is that they are the politicians and greedy bastards who don’t want a cut in their profits who use bogus science or the lowest scientists in the gene pool who will distort data for a few bucks. The vast majority of the scientific minds in the World agree and understand it’s a very serious problem that can do an untold amount of damage to life on Earth.So when the right wing f***tards have caused it to be too late to fix the problem, and we start seeing the devastating consequences and we start seeing end of the World type events — how will we punish those responsible. It will be too late. So shouldn’t we start punishing them now?”
• James Hansen, a famous man made global warming advocate, called for prosecution of global warming doubters for “high crimes against humanity.”
• Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., famous for his irrational environmental extremism, has said of global warming doubters: “This is treason, and we need to start treating them as traitors.”
• Joe Romm, a former Clinton administration official who now operates the global warming advocate website Climate Progress, once published a commenter who threatened climate skeptics: “It is not my wrath you need fear when there’s an entire generation that will soon be ready to strangle you and your kind while you sleep in your beds.” 
• Bill Nye, the famous “The Science Guy” and someone who I believe has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, which has virtually nothing to do with climate science, has publicly stated: “Part of the solution to this problem or this set of problems associated with climate change is getting the deniers out of our discourse. You know, we can’t have these people — they’re absolutely toxic.”
• Nye actually signed a letter along with others that was sent to major media companies that advocated those media companies identify global warming advocates as deniers, that somehow people like myself who are global warming doubters but believers in science are somehow too stupid to recognize the obvious, that we are not skeptics we are flat out deniers. 
• Two of the signers of the letter were the two people that published the ludicrous study that “97%” of climate scientists agree that man made global warming is real and substantial, a statistic that we and many others have shown to be horse manure:

So when you cannot defend your position with science and facts it is pretty obvious that global warming advocates will sink to really disgusting levels including shredding the First Amendment, threatening violence, and insulting others with name calling and slurs. In doing so, they degrade and insult science.

1) I used to work for a manager in a corporation who had a great saying: “nothing is more devastating to an opinion than the right number.” Every body has an opinion, but only opinions based on real numbers have any chance at being accurate. Such is the case when you look at the numbers on two graphs on the NASA website page dedicated to climate:

As we discussed a few days ago, one of the lynch pins that must happen for global warming advocates to be right is that the seas and oceans around the world need to rise dramatically as the ice caps melt and the water in those seas and oceans gets ever higher. If that rise in the water levels is not dramatic than the entire globaL warming hysteria starts to look just like that, hysteria.

Such is the case with the two graphs from NASA on the website cited above and the what their numbers convey:

• The first graph charts the rise in sea levels from 1993 to the present.
• And at first blush, it appears that global warming advocates might be right, the sea levels have increased at a pretty steady pace over the past 24 years.
• But look closely at the graph and you will notice two things.
• First, you will see that while the levels are up, they are up only about 86 mm which, if I did the math right, is only about 3.4 inches, hardly enough to flood out New York City as was claimed might happen in a global warming piece decades ago.
• Also note that for the last couple of years there has been no increase in the sea levels. While a couple of years is not enough to say the trend has stopped or started to reverse, it is something to follow going forward.
• The second graph does the same tracking of sea levels but starts way back in 1870 until about 1993, the point where the first graph started.
• If global warming is a recent phenomenon because there are so many more people using so much more fossil based fuels than for most of the time period of 1870 to 1993, then that chart of sea levels should have been flat at least until the 1970s, when global warming theory took hold.
• But it is not flat, the sea levels have been rising at a steady rate for about 147 years, according to NASA, and were rising long before global warming should have been happening.

Now, one could make the case that sea levels have been rising since 1870 but man made global warming made them rise faster in the past 24 years vs. the previous 120 years or so. That is a valid logical point.

But let’s not try to claim that the entire 86 mm rise since 1993 is solely because of mankind’s use of carbon fuel sources, something Al Gore would likely try to do. Some, most, or all of that rise could be just a trend of nature that began back in 1870 and what has seen sea levels rise ever since.

2) The beauty of predicting the future is that often no one is still alive to see if your predictions came true. Unfortunately, that was not the case for climate change/global warming scientist James Hansen back in 1988, according to V. Saxena, writing for the Conservative Tribune website on July 17, 2017:

• When interviewed by Salon magazine back then in 1988, Hansen claimed that within a few decades that New York City’s West Side Highway would “be under water.”
• That windows in the city would have to be taped in order to resist the high winds of global warming.
• Bird populations would have changed and trees would have changed because of global warming.
• Crime rates would soar because of the high temperatures.

Bad prediction, Mr. Hansen, 30 years later the West Side Highway is still high and dry, bird and tree populations have not changed, and no one sees a need to tape their windows. Another global warming prediction that is completely wrong on all counts.

Unfortunately for Hansen, he outlived his predictions and is still alive to see how grossly wrong his predictions went. But I give him credit because he is still plugging away with a new set of global warming predictions. 

In a recent paper he published he now warns that if the U.S. continues to use fossil fuels, the world’s sea levels would increase “several meters” within the next 50 to 150 years. He was wrong when he said in 1988 that NYC would be flooded by this time so now he makes sure he and most of the rest of us will be dead before if we see if he is wrong a second time. 

How does that old saying go: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” Too bad we will not be around to see if he is so wrong again, wise move on his part.

3) Looks like Mr. Hansen is not the only person coming out with new predictions despite having been so wrong with his predictions in the past. According to an article by Sarah Taylor, writing for the The Blaze on July 25, 2017, Al Gore is back with a whole new set of scary predictions that will happen because of global warming/climate change:

• Gore claims that global warming, something that stopped almost 20 years ago, will result in the “potential for tens of millions of refugees”entering the United States: “The Max Planck Institute and others are now saying that some significant regions of the Middle East and North Africa may become uninhabitable because of the rise in both the temperature and humidity. And that will increase the flows of refugees. Africa by mid-century will have more people than either China or India, and by the end of the century more people than India and China combined.”He went on to claim that 20 million people are on the verge of famine around the world.
• This despite the fact that global warming has made the world greener and food production more efficient and productive.
• He is once again trying to equate his stand and position on global warming on the highest moral and spiritual causes, much like he has done in the past when he called those of us that have doubts about global warming as being ignorant, racist, and homophobic.
• Now he claims the following moral high ground: “The climate movement is right now in the tradition of all the great moral causes that have improved the circumstances of humanity throughout our history. The abolition of slavery. Women’s suffrage and women’s rights.”

By inference, those that disagree with him would have also been against slavery, women’s suffrage, and women’s rights. Which of course is total garbage. Gore’s predictions have been wrong, Hansen’s predictions have been wrong, every global warming advocate’s predictions have been wrong. Trying to cover up your incompetence by shaming others is the lowest form of discussion and debate. Pathetic.

1) Obviously, science is very dependent on data to make progress in understanding the world. If the basic data underpinning scientists’ research and findings is wrong, then in almost every case, their findings and research are wrong.

Well, according to a new study, a lot of the data that is used by global warming advocates has been “adjusted,” and this new study says that the adjustments were not made accurately or in an unbiased manner:

• A recent study was completed by two climate scientists and a statistician.
• According to a recent article on the Ipatriot website, citing a Daily Caller earlier article, the purpose of their analysis was to try and validate global warming claims as presented by “global average surface temperature (GAST)” data sets managed by “NASA, NOAA and the UK’s Met Office.”
• The study is titled "On the Validity of NOAA, NASA and Hadley CRU Global Average Surface Temperature Data & The Validity of EPA's CO2 Endangerment Finding," was published in June and written by James P. Wallace III, Joseph S. D’Aleo and Craig Idso.
• These data sets are measuring temperature data as collected by aloft satellites, not surface temperatures.
• The article claims that their findings were peer reviewed by seven Phd people in the various climate related fields: Drs. Alan Carlin, Harold H. Doiron, Theodore R. Eck, Richard A. Keen, Anthony R. Lupo, Thomas P. Sheahan, and George T. Wolff.
• NASA, NOAA, and Met Office personnel had been taking the raw satellite data and “adjusting” it in ways that this study found made it look like global warming was happening to a far greater extent than the raw data showed.
• Joe D’Aleo, a study co-author has proven that, “Nearly all of the warming they are now showing is in the adjustments.”
• The government personnel adjusting the raw data, according to the study, were adjusting the raw data to make the past temperatures appear cooler than they actually were relative to current temperatures which in turn makes it look like global warming has been intensifying in the present time vs. the adjusted historical data.
• The study concluded that “These “experts” have duped the public and governments alike by “systematically removing previously existing cyclical temperature patterns.” In other words – they’ve literally scrubbed previous historical warming periods.”
• The study concluded that, “"In fact, the magnitude of their historical data adjustments, that removed their cyclical temperature patterns, are totally inconsistent with published and credible U.S. and other temperature data. Thus, it is impossible to conclude from the three published GAST data sets that recent years have been the warmest ever — despite current claims of record setting warming."

If your data is wrong or biased, your research and findings are wrong or biased, science is as simple as that. Another set of data and research that proves it is perfectly sane and logical to be a global warming doubter and a believer in science.

2) James Delingpole, writing for the Breitbart website on July 7, 2017, had some news for global warming advocates that is not good for their theories. Greenland recently experienced its coldest July day since temperature tracking began. Now, if global warming was really happening, it is doubtful that Greenland would be experiencing its coldest day ever.

In addition, the overall ice mass in Greenland is also close to all time highs. Again, not something you want to see if your prediction says that mankind is making the Earth warmer and warmer.

3) Chelsea Clinton is not my favorite person. She has virtually no real world experience, having been raised and protected by millionaire parents and has a tendency to act like she is an expert on many different topics when she really is not. And many times she wants to appear to be an expert on climate science even though her formal education has nothing to do with science.

And every time she does speak out on science she usually makes a fool of herself. In the past she has claimed that higher rates of diabetes will occur as a direct result of climate change and/or global warming but providing not data that really supports a causality link between diabetes rates and Earth’s temperatures. 

She has also claimed that climate change/global warming is increasing the number of child brides around the world. As with most global warming advocates, anything wrong in the world can be traced back to global warming, proving that Chelsea and many others have no idea what the difference is between two events being highly correlated and two events truly having an impact on each other. i.e. causality.

But being wrong in the past has not stopped from continuing her losing streak. She recently made a reference to a single newspaper article and claimed that if humanity does not get its act together within three years, humanity is doomed because of climate change: “These experts say we have 3 years to get climate change under control. And they’re the optimists-The Washington Post”

Chelsea, please pardon us if we do not swallow this kernel of knowledge from you since:

• In the 1970s we were told a new Ice Age was coming, that did not happen.
• In the 1980s and beyond we were told that Earth’s temperatures would be rising dramatically, they did not, having been relatively flat for the past two decade.
• In 2009, Al Gore told us that there was a 75% chance that the North Pole would be totally melted by 2014, it did not melt.
• ABC News told us that coastal U.S. cities would be underwater within ten years, that did not happen.
• Famous climate alarmist James Hansen predicted that New York City would be underwater by 2018, that is not going to happen.
• Climate change/global warming advocates told us that polar bear populations were going extinct, that is not happening.

So Chelsea, given this abysmal track record you and other global warming "experts" of being wrong, please excuse us from AGAIN not taking you seriously. One article from one newspaper and you have to broadcast it as if it is gospel when these types of horrible forecasts have NEVER been close to be accurate.

As we reported earlier this week, James Hansen at least had the good sense to predict that climate disaster would happen sometime in the next “50 to 150” years, long after most of us have passed, making it impossible for him to be proven wrong...again. I would suggest you do the same thing since in three years I think that most of us will be fine, the Earth will be fine, and you would have joined a long list of people with idiotic Chicken Little forecasts on your resume/Twitter feed.

So what did we learn today: Chelsea is at it again and being wrong again, Greenland is getting cold, and government agencies lie. Some things never change. More reasons to be a global warming doubter and a believer in science to follow.

July, 2017, Part 1, I Am A Global Warming Doubter and A Believer In Science: 100 Year Predictions and Massive C02 From Electric Cars

Every month we have enough material to return to a continuing theme in this blog, namely that “I am a global warming doubter AND a believer in science.” This became of interest because of people like Al Gore who fanatically and verbosely claimed that you had to be an idiot to not believe in manmade global warming. It has been my life belief that anyone that is that loud and that obnoxious is hiding something, that rather than argue facts and reality it is better to beat down and insult anyone who disagrees

As we have dove into the whole issue of manmade global warming, or its new rebranded title of climate change, we found that Al Gore and people like him were guilty of a number of things:

• Ignoring science and realities that did not support their opinions and positions.
• Rather than have an adult conversation about climate, these types of advocates like Gore sank to the level of insulting those who dared look at ALL science by calling them a variety of names including racists, homophobes, terrorists, flat earth believers, and other slanderous names.
• Continuing to insist that politicians step up their intrusions into our lives with higher taxes, more regulations, and more control of our freedoms and standards of living based on a shaky theory at best.

Thus, let’s see the latest facts and science that prove you can be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, regardless of what Al Gore proclaims.

1) We have frequently reported in this blog how climate alarmists have almost always been wrong in their predictions and forecasts. Back in the 1970s they predicted that a new Ice Age was imminent. When that did not happen they predicted that massive global warming was imminent. When that did not happen they rebranded themselves to freak out over climate change, covering both ends of the climate spectrum, global warming and global cooling.

In 2009 Al Gore predicted that by 2014 there was a 75% chance that the North Pole would be completely melted. Did not happen. ABC ran a freakout news report over ten years ago that predicted by now major cities along the U.S. coasts would be under water. Did not happen. Every UN, government, and “expert” who predicted the future global warming of the Earth have been embarrassingly wrong.

But the global warming and climate change alarmists keep on trying to scare us and warn us even though their track record of being accurate is abysmal. But they found a way around them being wrong all of the time according to a recent article by Stephen Kruiser on the Independent Journal Review website: Climate alarmist James Hansen, who once predicted that New York City would be underwater by 2018, decided that he cannot be that wrong again if he changes his prediction to say that New York City will be underwater “50 to 150” years from now.

Nicely done, make a prediction that will come true long after just about anyone alive today will be dead by the time the new timeframe comes around, making it impossible to be wrong again in our lifetime.

How many times does this nonsense of being wrong have to exist before we have an adult conversation about the climate that involves ALL of the available research and science?

2) Most global warming advocates and climate change advocates are so into alternative energy sources and alternative energy transportation technologies. We have already shown studies in this blog that prove that the mining, manufacturing, shipping, and installation of solar panels is worse for the environment than fossil fuels.

Today let’s take a shot at how an alternative car technology, i.e. Tesla electric cars, are actually worse for the environment than fossil fuel driven cars:

• Johan Kristensson, writing for the Principia Scientific International website on June 20, 2017, discussed a new study that showed that the production of Tesla car batteries released as much CO2 gas as 8 years of driving a similar car using gasoline.
• The study was done by the Swedish Environment Institute at the request of the Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Energy Agency.
• They studied the total climate impact of lithium ion batteries over the complete life cycle of the batteries, including car lithium batteries.
• The study technique is a so called meta study which is a comprehensive review of previously done research studies.
• The study estimated that for every kilowatt of storage capacity in a lithium battery, 150 to 200 kilograms of carbon dioxide gas is created.
• Since each Tesla battery has a capacity of 100 kilowatts, simple math says that a Tesla battery creates 15,000 to 20,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide in the manufacturing process.
• The study then estimated how long one would have to drive a gas or diesel car to generate as much CO2 as what went into the production of car lithium batteries.
• The answer: the break even point of a gas or diesel car for CO2 production was a whopping 8.2 years for a Tesla sized battery.
• Which means up to 8.2 years driving a comparable gas driven engine would have been better for the environment than a Tesla battery powered car.
• After 8.2 years the benefit to the environment goes to the Tesla but who knows if the average life of a Tesla car is 8.2 years; if it is less than 8.2 years Tesla never becomes environmentally more friendly.
• The deal is much better for a Nissan leaf model which has a much smaller battery, meaning it is less powerful, since its breakeven point environmentally is less than three years.
• But very few people have bought Leafs over the years, possibly because of how under powered they are.

The bottom line reality is that electric cars, as are solar panels, are not necessarily the golden solution that global warming advocates hope for. In fact, they may be worse than the current status quo. But often facts and realities are of little importance to people like Al Gore.

That’s enough to get us started on this month’s, “I am a global warming doubter and a believer in science.” Making predictions that cannot be proven and claiming technology that works that maybe does not. More to follow.
