January, 2018, Part 4, I Am A Global Warming Doubter and a Believer In Science: Threatening Those With Words and Actions Who Are Non-Believers

Every month we have enough material to return to a continuing theme in this blog, namely that “I am a global warming doubter AND a believer in science.” This became of interest because of people like Al Gore who fanatically and verbosely claimed that you had to be an idiot to not believe in manmade global warming. It has been my life belief that anyone that is that loud and that obnoxious is hiding something, that rather than argue facts and reality it is better to beat down and insult anyone who disagrees.

As we have dove into the whole issue of manmade global warming, or its new rebranded title of climate change, we found that Al Gore and people like him were guilty of a number of things:
  • Ignoring science and realities that did not support their opinions and positions.
  • Rather than have an adult conversation about climate, these types of advocates like Gore sank to the level of insulting those who dared look at ALL science by calling them a variety of names including racists, homophobes, terrorists, flat earth believers, and other slanderous names.
  • Continuing to insist that politicians step up their intrusions into our lives with higher taxes, more regulations, and more control of our freedoms and standards of living based on a shaky theory at best.
To see the past posts and the multitude of evidence that we have compiled that showed it is perfectly okay to be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, enter the phrase "global warming doubter” in the search box above or go through the monthly historical posts listed on the right side of this page.

Thus, let’s see the latest facts and science that prove you can be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, regardless of what Al Gore proclaims. Before we do that though, take a look at the previous three posts we have done on this theme this month at the following links:

By looking at real data from real scientists who did real research we now know that:
  1. The global warming trend stopped about 20 years ago.
  2. We know that the severity and number of hurricanes and cyclones worldwide is declining.
  3. We know that the severity and number of wildfires worldwide is declining.
  4. We know that the severity and number of droughts worldwide is declining.
  5. We know that the severity and number of major floods worldwide is declining.
  6. We know that rather than disappearing, the ice caps are still there and are still wide ranging and very cold.
  7. We know that global sea levels have risen very little compared to what was predicted.
  8. And most of all, we now know that EVERY major man made global warming/climate change forecast regarding temperatures, hurricanes, wildfires, droughts, floods, the ice caps and sea levels has been very wrong, embarrassingly wrong.
Given the realities of the failure of global warming advocates in the face of real data, real, science, real research and basic reality, you would have hoped they would have packed up their bags and moved on to other, hopefully real issues facing humanity.

But alas, rather than admit they were wrong and go away, consider what some global warming advocates are saying, threatening, slandering, and generally acting like two year olds who did not get their way. In the process of the rants and threats you will read below, consider what a disservice they have done to the world of science by cherry picking only select data and research that satisfy their own biased views rather than looking at all the data and research:
  • Two years ago, then Secretary of State John Kerry took a swipe at those of us that are global warming doubters but believers in science: “The science tells us unequivocally, those who continue to make climate change a political fight put us all at risk. And we cannot sit idly by and allow them to do that.”
  • Mr. Kerry: the science is not unequivocal, see the three links above and is that a veiled threat of violence, “we cannot stand idly by and let them do that?”
  • Kerry went on to again try and assert that “science” tells us that global warming is real when we know a ton of scientists that would vehemently disagree: ”So when science tells us that our climate is changing and human beings are largely causing that change, by what right do people stand up and just say, ‘well, I dispute that, or I deny that elementary truth?’”
  • But this is what some people do when they cannot argue facts, they either threaten and name call or they try to assert they are on the right side of the facts when they are not but stating things like “when science tells us.”
  • In a direct attack on the First Amendment, somehow a U.S. Senator, Sheldon Whitehouse, actually declared that those who are global warming doubters but believers in science should be arrested and prosecuted under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), you know the law used to prosecute real gangsters and real criminals.
  • This is a real dangerous, freedom restricting idea to have, declaring that Americans should be thrown in jail for voicing an opinion.
  • The Talking Points Memo website once published an article (that apparently has since been removed,) that had the ominous title, “At what point do we jail or execute global warming deniers.”
  • This article actually promoted violence against fellow human beings that dared to not be a global warming advocate: “What is so frustrating about these fools is that they are the politicians and greedy bastards who don’t want a cut in their profits who use bogus science or the lowest scientists in the gene pool who will distort data for a few bucks. The vast majority of the scientific minds in the World agree and understand it’s a very serious problem that can do an untold amount of damage to life on Earth. So when the right wing f***tards have caused it to be too late to fix the problem, and we start seeing the devastating consequences and we start seeing end of the World type events — how will we punish those responsible. It will be too late. So shouldn’t we start punishing them now?”
  • James Hansen, a famous man made global warming advocate, called for prosecution of global warming doubters for “high crimes against humanity.”
  • Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., famous for his irrational environmental extremism, has said of global warming doubters: “This is treason, and we need to start treating them as traitors.”
  • Joe Romm, a former Clinton administration official who now operates the global warming advocate website Climate Progress, once published a commenter who threatened climate skeptics: “It is not my wrath you need fear when there’s an entire generation that will soon be ready to strangle you and your kind while you sleep in your beds.”
  • Bill Nye, the famous “The Science Guy” and someone who I believe has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, which has virtually nothing to do with climate science, has publicly stated: “Part of the solution to this problem or this set of problems associated with climate change is getting the deniers out of our discourse. You know, we can’t have these people — they’re absolutely toxic.”
  • Nye actually signed a letter along with others that was sent to major media companies that advocated those media companies identify global warming advocates as deniers, that somehow people like myself who are global warming doubters but believers in science are somehow too stupid to recognize the obvious, that we are not skeptics we are flat out deniers.
  • Two of the signers of the letter were the two people that published the ludicrous study that “97%” of climate scientists agree that man made global warming is real and substantial, a statistic that we and many others have shown to be horse manure:
https://loathemygovernment.blogspot.com/2017/06/june-2017-part-3-i-am-global-warming.html

So when you cannot defend your position with science and facts it is pretty obvious that global warming advocates will sink to really disgusting levels including shredding the First Amendment, threatening violence, and insulting others with name calling and slurs. In doing so, they degrade and insult science.

September, 2016, I Am A Global Warming Doubter and a Believer In Science: Real Data From a Real Scientist and The Ever Growing South Pole

Every month we have enough material to return to a continuing theme in this blog, namely that “I am a global warming doubter AND a believer in science.”This became of interest because of people like Al Gore who fanatically and verbosely claimed that you had to be an idiot to not believe in manmade global warming.

Thus, let’s see the latest facts and science that prove you can be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, regardless of what Al Gore proclaims:

1) We have covered this story before but are doing it again today since it was from a news source that global warming advocates cannot write off as fringe or crazy. Brian Clark Howard, writing for National Geographic magazine, reported back in late 2015 on how NASA research had shown that the Antarctic ice sheet was growing significantly.

Now, if massive global warming was occurring, one would not expect the South Pole ice volume to be getting larger. Warming means less ice which should mean a smaller ice cap. Obviously, none of the global warming models going back through history ever predicted that global warming would cause the ice cap to get larger.

Specifically, NASA scientists wrote in the Journal of Glaciology that the shrinkage of glacier ice in the pole’s western region was being offset by the thickening of glaciers in the eastern part of the ice cap. This eastern area was not only seeing increased snowfall but helping the South Pole get a net gain in ice of an estimated 100 billion tons of ice per YEAR. This in turn caused the scientists at NASA to reduce the estimated rise in sea levels that they had been using.

Now, the article does point out that some global warming advocate scientists have problems with NASA’s research findings, which is cool, the more input to a problem the more likely the truth will come out. For example, Ted Scambos, the lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center says: “I think there's a serious issue with the study. It’s unfortunate that it made it through peer review.”

Unfortunately, at least in the article, Mr. Scambos does not say what the issue is so his credibility must take a little hit. But he does point out that the article got through peer review so some scientists, somewhere thought the research effort had some validity.

This is another example where the global warming doubters among us are just looking for an adult discussion of the entire range of climate research and data and not the cherry picking of only the subset of research that seem to validate the views of global warming advocates and ignore other scientific data and views. And NASA and this data show there is a good reason to step back and have that adult, comprehensive conversation.

2) Marc Moran, writing for the Climate Depot website on August 23, 2016, sets up a nice comparison between global warming advocates and global warming doubters. Bill Nye, “The Science Guy," was recently interviewed on TV and claimed that man made global warming was causing massive flooding, much like we have just witnessed in the Baton Rouge area. It is my understanding that the “Science Guy” has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. It does not appear he has an advanced degree of any kind and that none of his education was dealing extensively with climatology.

Mr. Moran’s article focuses on Dr. Roger Pielke, Jr., a professor in the Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado and who is also a Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences. He is also the author of the book, “The Rightful Place of Science: Disasters and Climate Change.”

It is Dr. Pielke’s opinion that there is no linkage of global warming to both the Baton Rouge floods and other types of extreme weather. “Flood disasters are sharply down. U.S. floods not increasing either."

This statement was in rebuttal to the position of economist and New York Times columnist, Paul Krugman, who also linked the Baton Rouge flooding to global warming. Specifically, Dr. Piekle stated: “How does Krugman get away with this?” Did I mention that Krugman is an economist?

Dr. Pielke referred to several sets of real data, not the opinions of a mechanical engineer and economist in his rebuttal:
  • U.S. flood damage as a percentage of the nation’s GDP has been going down steadily from 1940 to 2013, a span of 73 years, enough time to get at least a recent view and trend.
  • Back in the 1940s, the percentage of flood damage was consistently in the .2% to .3% range while more recently the percentage has been down to often less than .05% or so, a dramatic decrease.
  • He also presents a graph that plots the “Drought Severity Index” from the late 1800s through present time and it is obvious, using real historical data, that droughts have not gotten worse over time, something that was supposed to happen when man made global warming supposedly took off.
  • He also graphs how the annual number of hurricanes hitting the U.S. mainland have slowly been trending down over the past century, something that was not supposed to happen according to the global warming models.
  • And last, but not least, he shows how the annual number of tornadoes touching down in the country has also been slowly trending downwards.
Dr. Piekle gives a great summary of what scientists should be looking at, the long term, and not the recent weather reports and results like Bill Nye recently did: “Floods suck when they occur. The good news is U.S. flood damage is sharply down over 70 years. Remember, disasters can happen any time and they suck. But it is also good to understand long-term trends based on data, not hype.” Based on data and not hype...or the opinions of a mechanical engineer and an economist.

3) We referenced Bill Nye above and his TV appearance relating to climate change, global warming, and the Baton Rouge floods. This is what he had to say: “I don’t have the answer to this except it is going to get worse. It almost certainly will get worse. Everybody – as the ocean gets warmer, which it is getting, it expands. Water gets – the molecules spread apart and then as the sea surface gets warmer, more water evaporates. And so it is very reasonable that these storms are connected to these big effects. So what will probably happen is people will move.”

Two problems with his statement:
  1. “I don’t have the answer.” - Well then, we probably should not be listening to your opinion if you have no back up facts or answers.
  2. “It almost certainly will get worse.” But not according to a climate expert, Dr.Piekle, that we just discussed. His graphs show every important climate factor going in the opposite direction of getting worse.
Again, who should you trust: the mechanical engineer who has his opinion or a climate professor who has real data?

That will wrap up this month’s update on the them, “I am a global warming doubter and a believer in science." We heard from a real scientist that was using detailed historical data to show that it is perfectly sane and rational to be a global warming doubter. We also pointed out how a mechanical engineer and an economist opposed that view but provided no real data to offset the trends in climate. We also showed how the Federal government, via NASA, was showing that the South Pole ice cap was getting much larger every year, not smaller, as projected by global warming advocates’ forecast models.

As always, all us global warming doubters are trying to do is have a mature, adult conversation on ALL of the available data, statistics, and research so that a realistic solution, if indeed any solution is needed, can be formulated to attack what root causes, if there are any root causes, to make the climate a better place.

January, 2016, Part 3, I Am A Global Warming Doubter and A Believer In Science: The States Rebel, The Feds Manipulate Data, Bill Nye Is Not A Climate Scientist and More

  • Continuing to insist that politicians step up their intrusions into our lives with higher taxes, more regulations, and more control on our freedoms and standards of living based on a shaky theory at best.
To see the past posts and the multitude of evidence that we have compiled that showed it is perfectly okay to be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, enter the phrase "global warming doubter” in the search box above or go through the monthly historical post listed on the right side of this page.
Thus, let’s see the latest facts and science that prove you can be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, regardless of what Al Gore proclaims:1) Patrick Michaels and Chip Knappenberger are climate scientists at the libertarian Cato Institute. In late 2015, they released a paper covering their climate research that examined the difference between actual, observed, measured global surface temperatures since 1950 and compared the actual realities to what over a hundred well known climate forecasting models predicted those temperatures would be in the future. The common and basic assumption in all of these forecast models was that as mankind threw more and more carbon into the atmosphere, the earth’s temperatures would rise. Their results should not be surprising to those of us who are global warming doubters and believers in science: for the past six decades, those models have constantly and grossly overestimated what the temperature would be in the future and thus, overstating how much global warming was going on. In their own words: “Everyone by now is familiar with the ‘pause’ or ‘slowdown’ in the rate of global warming that has taken place over the past 20 years or so, but few realize is that the observed warming rate has been beneath the model mean expectation for periods extending back to the mid-20th century—60+ years… During all periods from 10 years (2006-2015) to 65 (1951-2015) years in length, the observed temperature trend lies in the lower half of the collection of climate model simulations and for several periods it lies very close (or even below) the 2.5th percentile of all the model runs.”Michaels and Knappenberger went beyond their surface temperature analysis and decided to look at satellite and weather balloon data to see if the results above the surface were any different. Not surprisingly, the result is the same: the climate models predicted way more warming than actually occurred in the atmosphere as they did for surface temperatures. Michaels and Knappenberger summed up their findings: “This is a devastating indictment of climate model performance. ...For periods of time longer than about 20 years, the observed trends from all data sources fall beneath the lower bound which contains 95 percent of all model trends and in the majority of cases, falls beneath even the absolute smallest trend found in any of the 102 climate model runs. The amount of that over-prediction comports well with a growing body of scientific findings and growing understanding that the sensitivity of the earth’s surface temperature to rising atmospheric greenhouse gas levels… lies towards (and yet within) the low end of the mainstream assessed likely range.”“A devastating indictment.” Could not agree more and still people like Al Gore go off on what is clearly becoming an obsolete scientific farce.2) Let’s move from two true climate scientists, Michaels and Knappenberger, to a famous non-scientist. Bill Ney is the "Science Guy” and for a long time filled a valid societal function by getting kids interested in science. But then he decided to market himself as a climate expert and a big supporter of the whole man made climate change/global warming theory. But let’s clear up something right now. While people like Michaels and Knappenberger are real climate scientists, while Judith Curry of Georgia Tech is a real climate scientists and many others we have discussed in this blog are real climate scientists, Bill Nye by training and profession is NOT a climate scientist. In fact, Bill Nye is not a scientist, he is an engineer by training and his early work history.According to a recent Breitbart article, Mr. Nye has an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering. Using that degree, he worked in the aerospace industry, none of which has anything to do with climate science. But he has appointed himself as a player propagating the global warming theory. In fact, he recently bragged that he was flying around the country with Obama on Air Force One, as the following tweet shows:
Verified account‏@BillNye

Heading down to DC to catch an #EarthDay flight on Air Force One tomorrow with the President. We're going to #ActOnClimate.
Seems pretty hypocritical that someone who views himself as an earth savior from global warming brags about getting on a huge, carbon spewing jet to go for a public relations ride. So we now have a global warming effort led by a lawyer and former politician, Al Gore, and a mechanical engineer, Bill Nye, neither of whom have any training, education, or experience in climate science.3) We have often made the case that this President has an enormous ego and thinks that he has never made a mistake. However, in regards to Obama’s EPA plans to regulate and suppress coal usage in this country, over half of the country in a way thinks that he has actually made a mistake in this area. Twenty seven states, led by West Virginia, deep coal country, and Texas have banded together to fight the climate rules that the President is pushing. The attorney generals of 27 states recently went in front of Federal judges to try to stop Obama’s Clean Power Plan, arguing that the President and his EPA have overreached in their desire to suppress the usage of coal for power generation in this country. There is also the reality that these rules and regulations will be suppressing jobs and economic growth for an effort that will have little impact on the environment: the rest of the world is on track to build 2,400 coal burning plants in the near future while Obama is worried about a handful of U.S plants that will kill a whole lot of coal miner jobs.4) A November 30, 2015 article by Barbara Hollingsworth, writing for the CNSNews website, discussed the accusations of German scientist, Dr. Friedrich-Karl Ewer of the University of Paderborn. The professor accused NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS) of deliberately altering temperature records between 2010 and 2012 to produce the false reality that the Earth had been warming since 1950.Specifically:
  • He researched historical temperatures of 1,153 weather stations from around the world going back to 1881.
  • He found we he called “massive” manipulation by GISS between 2010 and 2012.
  • Ewert noticed that temperature data from weather stations in Iceland and Greenland had been changed after the fact.
  • Based on this manipulation, he then randomly looked at 120 weather stations around the world and manually compared the original archived data to GISS’ 2012 temperature records.
  • He found that the changing of published data to the original archived data was widespread.
  • He also found that since 1881, the original data points show four distinct cooling stages alternating with three warming phases over time, with the earth currently in a cooling phase.
  • He also concluded that there was a stronger warming period, based on government data, in earth’s history back in the early 1900s, long before carbon emissions had grown so much, as his following chart shows (click on the chart for a larger view):

(Source: Dr. Friedrich-Karl Ewert)

  • He also claimed that he found multiple statistical methods used by GISS to modify the data trend from cooling to warming: “Between the years 2010 and 2012 the data measured since 1881 were altered so that they showed a significant warming, especially after 1950…. A comparison of the data from 2010 with the data of 2012 shows that NASA-GISS had altered its own data sets so that especially after WWII, a clear warming appears – although it never existed.”
For all I know this professor could be no better informed or credible than Bill Nye. But it appears that he did a lot of detailed work and analysis that at least deserves a formal review and critique. That is what real scientists do, review and critique other scientists’ works to ensure they represent reality. That will do it for today’s proof that it is perfectly rational to be a global warming doubter and a believer in science. More tomorrow.

March, 2014, I Am A Global Warming Doubter and A Believer In Science, Part 3

This is our third in a regular series update where we assert that “I am a global warming doubter and a believer in science.” We had thought that we could finish everything in the update in two days but it is going to take longer as proof piles up that it is possible to be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, despite what Al Gore says.

Those that believe that human actions are causing global warming, or its rebranded theme of ‘climate change,” tend to denigrate, insult, slur, and demean those of us that have our doubts about global warming, climate change and mankind’s actions and impacts on such situations. These believers accuse us doubters of being ignorant of science and stupid for not seeing the world as they see it.

For the past year or so we have pretty much killed off that accusation by showing dozens of ways in which global warming doubters have as much science, if not more science, on their side showing that manmade global warming and climate change do not exist. A summary of those past posts can be found in the first update we did two days ago at the following link:

As you go through those previous posts, an open minded person cannot help but think that the whole global warming scare was just that, a scare. From research done by the CERN Institute in Europe, the foremost physics lab and group of scientists in the world, to the fact that the earth’s temperature has remained steady for the past 17 years or so to the fact that almost 100% of the global warming forecast models have been utterly wrong over the years in forecasting the earth’s temperature, scientific methods and realities have shown that it is possible to be a global warming doubter and a strict adherent to the scientific process.

But as you see in these previous posts, we have proposed a straight forward, minimal government solution that would cover either end game, regarding global warming and climate change due to mankind’s actions. It is a win-win for both sides of the argument but cannot become a reality until the likes of Barack Obama, Al Gore, and others stop the name calling and sit down to come up with an adult conversation and an adult solution, similar to the one we propose. Until that happens, we will continue to make our case of being a global warming doubter and a believer in science, as the following points show.

1) Patrick Moore, Ph.D. is the co-founder of the environmental activist group Greenpeace, certainly one of the most avid environmentalist groups around. In testimony he gave in front of the U.S. Senate’s Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee's Subcommittee on Oversight on Feb. 25, he debunked
claims that carbon dioxide emissions from human activity are responsible for global warming.

In addition, he asserted that a warmer temperature would be "far better" than a cooler one. Some of his testimony quotes include the following:
  • "There is no scientific proof that human emissions of carbon dioxide are the dominant cause of the minor warming of the Earth's atmosphere over the past 100 years."
  • "The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states: 'It is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming' since the mid-20th century. Extremely likely is not a scientific term but rather a judgment, as in a court of law.’"
  • Moore, who is currently the chairman emeritus of Greenspirit Strategies in Vancouver, Canada, also told the subcommittee: "Perhaps the simplest way to expose the fallacy of ‘extreme certainty’ is to look at the historical record. When modern life evolved over 500 million years ago, CO2 was more than 10 times higher than today, yet life flourished at this time. Then an ice age occurred 450 million years ago when CO2 was 10 times higher than today. The fact that we had both higher temperatures and an ice age at a time when CO2 emissions were 10 times higher than they are today fundamentally contradicts the certainty that human-caused CO2 emissions are the main cause of global warming.”
  • "The increase in temperature between 1910 and 1940 was virtually identical to the increase between 1970 and 2000. Yet the IPCC does not attribute the increase from 1910-1940 to 'human influence. They are clear in their belief that human emissions impact only the increase since the mid-20th century. Why does the IPCC believe that a virtually identical increase in temperature after 1950 is caused mainly by 'human influence,' when it has no explanation for the nearly identical increase from 1910-1940?"
  • "Today, we live in an unusually cold period in the history of life on earth and there is no reason to believe that a warmer climate would be anything but beneficial for humans and the majority of other species. There is ample reason to believe that a sharp cooling of the climate would bring disastrous results for human civilization."
  • "It is extremely likely that a warmer temperature than today's would be far better than a cooler one."
Wow, a person in the scientific and environmental movement who actually looked at historical data in a logical and rational manner and concluded that the global warming/climate change theory really does not standup to logic or historical reality. Moore’s testimony appeared courtesy of a NewsMax article from March 2, 2014.

I wonder if AL Gore would accuse Mr. Moore of being a racist or a homophobe like he accused other doubters of global warming to be. I wonder if the President would accuse Mr. Moore of being like the flat earth adherents from centuries ago like he recently accused the global warming doubters to be.

2) John Kerry is the current Secretary of State. He is not a weatherman. He did not found Greenpeace like John Moore helped do. He is not a scientist. He is a career politician, nothing more. But that did not stop him from checking in on the global warming issue when he recently stated in a speech in Indonesia that climate change was “another weapon of mass destruction.”

Given what we have discussed recently in this series, namely that the earth’s average temperature has not changed in about 17 years, that the polar ice caps are expanding, that every global warming forecast has been embarrassingly wrong, that Al Gore falsely predicted that the North Pole ice cap would dissolve by 2013, and given Kerry’s total lack of background in this area, I find his assertion to be totally ignorant and dangerous.

As Secretary of State, he should be focusing on the renewal of the Cold War with Russia, the nuclear weapons programs of Iran and North Korea, and international terrorism, the real weapons of mass destruction and shut up about something is knows nothing about and is not qualified to talk about.

3) In early February, 2014, Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn and Bill Nye, the "science guy," faced off on a Sunday edition of Meet the Press to discuss global warming/climate change. As one might expect, Nye was in favor of drastic steps to control climate change due to mankind's actions in the world today.

However, he made a few comments that need to be examined for their logic and validity:
  • During the interview he claimed that there is no longer a "debate in the scientific community" over climate change. We know that this is not correct, having reviewed a University of Oregon effort where tens of thousands of scientists signed a document saying that global warming/climate change was NOT a settled debate, having reviewed a letter signed by dozens of NASA scientists and astronauts criticizing NASA for assuming that global warming was a fact when they felt there was not enough scientific basis for that conclusion, and having reviewed the research out of the CERN Institute showing that global warming was mostly a function of the sun’s activity, not mankind’s activity.
  • Nye asserted during the show that, “You don’t need a PhD in climate science to understand what’s going on, that we have overwhelming evidence that the climate is changing.” That is a correct statement but that does not mean mankind has changed it. The climate has been changing since the beginning of time, e.g. the Ice Age, and to say we need to kill freedom and our economy because the climate is changing is a ridiculous statement to make, the climate has always been changing.
  • The Congresswoman made the point that, “When you look at the fact that we have gone from 320 parts per million — 0.032 to 0.040 — 400 parts per million [carbon dioxide in the atmosphere], you realize it’s very slight.” At which point Nye went ballistic, "That’s 30 percent. I mean, that’s an enormous change. And it’s changing the world. And that’s just over the last few decades.” Yes, it went up 30% but 30% of a very small amount is still a very small amount no matter how you look at it. At no point in the conversation did he show how the increase affected climate, just that it must have since it went up 30%.
  • The Congresswoman did point out that Nye is not a climate scientist, but an "engineer and actor." He is also not a physicist or other type of hard, relevant scientist.
Again, global warming/climate hysteria from someone not even qualified to make such scientific conclusions ala John Kerry.

4) As we have cited many times before, the United States has done an outstanding job of reducing its carbon footprint over the past decade, much more than just about any other country on the planet. Depending on what you are measuring and how you are measuring it, we have reduced our carbon footprint between 12% and 20%, mostly through conservation, better technology, and the wider use of natural gas. The Congresswoman arguing with Bill Nye on Meet The Press made the same point, estimating that the reduction was 17%, mostly via technology.

The other point we have made many times is even if the United States did a cap and trade program and severely reduced its carbon footprint even more, even though it probably leads the world in reducing its footprint over the past several years, it probably would not make any difference unless the rest if the world, especially China, did the same thing at the same time.

Many expert sources are forecasting that coal usage around the world will continue to grow dramatically over the upcoming decades, a primary source of carbon. All the U.S. would do if it went it alone would be to kill the domestic economy and our economic well being for a dubious, unsettled reason, while enriching foreign economies. The U.S. Energy Administration has predicted that even by 2040, coal will be the world’ primary source of electricity generation, about double the size of nuclear and renewables.

And consider how out of control China is from dumping pollutants and carbon into the earth’s atmosphere, based on an article from the March 7, 2014 issue of The Week magazine:
  • A huge fog that has settled over much of China has made life “unbearable” according to the article.
  • So-called pariculate concentration, which is considered unsafe at levels above 25 micrograms per cubic meter, is currently way above 500 in Beijing.
  • The government is advising people and their pets to wear face masks if they go outside.
  • A professor at the China Agricultural University has forecasted that if current levels exist, China may experience a “nuclear winter” where the dense, polluted smog would block out the sun and stunt the growth of crops.
Thus, in the big picture, it does not matter if the Obama administration shuts down a few coal burning U.S. plants. All it does is raise the cost if electricity for us while the Chinese factories are dumping pollutants and carbon into the air at such a rapid pace that it might block out the sun.

If Obama wanted to do something worthwhile about global warming, he would take three steps:
  1. He would consider our simple plan for reducing our carbon footprint with minimal negative impacts to American families and our economy.
  2. He would pull a John Kennedy and vow to support scientific research that would make coal a clean burning fuel within ten years. That would be a fabulous legacy since coal is not going away in the near term or further out future.
  3. He could be a leader and unite the worlds’ leader behind a coherent world wide plan to reduce humanity’s carbon footprint, not just the U.S. footprint. The problem with this last point is that he has lost almost all of his credibility and trust with the rest of the world so being a leader is probably out of the picture.
That will do it for now on this subject. We will return to defend our position in the future of being “a global warming doubter and a believer in science” because the science is not settled, regardless of what politicians and TV personalities say.
