July, 2021, Part 7, Political Class Insanity: Freedom on the March in Cuba, Businesses Marching for Government Services and Protection in Baltimore, Violence on the March in Chicago, and Inflation on the March Everywhere.

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

1) As is often the case where the political class seems unable to resolve even the simplest of crises and problems, it looks like they are also not going to be able to cure the steadily increasing inflation trends in this country across just about every facet of life. Or least so far they have put forth no ideas or programs to handle this ever widening problem:
  • According to the latest government reports, inflation increased the most this past June than in the past 13 years.
  • The Consumer Price Index jumped .9% in one month and is up a whopping 5.4% from the same month last year.
  • Used vehicles accounted for one third of the growth in inflation in June.
  • Although the Federal Reserve is saying these price increases are “transitory,” Mohn Ryding, chief economic advisor at Brean Capital is not buying it: “We are told the story is transitory but the increases are going faster and for longer. We just had a monthly increase that was about double what was expected.”
  • The cost of food away from home jumped .7% in one month, the largest gain since 1981.
  • The cost of hotel stays went up 7.9% on a year over year basis.
  • While wages were also up, they rose less than the increase in inflation.
  • The National Federation of Independent Business reported 47% of small-business owners, the largest share since 1981, were seeing higher selling prices in June.
  • Consumers are also expecting inflation to continue to be a problem with a Fed survey showing that consumers expect inflation to continue to rise.
Life is getting more expensive and the Washington political class has shown no inclination or ability to get it under control. Only time will tell if these high inflation rates are really “transitory,” but I wouldn't hold my breath.

2) We have always asserted that a basic, basic function of any government entity is to protect the lives and property of the citizens it serves. If a government does nothing else as long as it protects citizens’ lives then it is a success.

However, as readers of this blog know, the politicians and government bureaucrats that operate many government entities in this country, especially large cities that have been run by Democrats for decades, have been doing a horrific job in fulfilling this basic government function. And they have become worse and worse at executing this function, not better.

Chicago streets have become even more violent than their violent past has been. Minneapolis, the George Floyd murder city, has seen skyrocketing violence. NYC has seen upper income residents fleeing the city to get away from the increasing crime and violence. From a percentage increase perspective, Portland, Oregon has seen all categories of crime increase multi-fold over the past few years.

But Chicago is the epicenter of rising violent crime. Several times a month we usually review how the past weekend in Chicago saw dozens and dozens of citizens shot and many of those shot die, often including kids. But the latest violence in Chicago may take the cake of a political class failing to curb crime and protecting citizens:
  • A local rap artist, whose real name was Londre Sylvester, was recently at a hearing at the Cook County Jail in Chicago.
  • He had just been released from the jail and was subject to electronic monitoring.
  • As he left the jail, a place where I would bet there were lots of law enforcement folks, he got shot at least 64 times, with wounds to his head and other areas of his body.
  • Let me say that again: as he walked out of the county jail he got shot 64 times.
  • Police reports said that an undisclosed number of suspects jumped into separate vehicles, fleeing in different directions after the shooting, which is, surprise, being considered a “targeted attack.”
  • Two innocent bystanders were also shot in the massacre.
Unbelievable, that is how brazen and dangerous the criminal element has become in the city of Chicago and the mayor and the politicians running the city seem unable or unwilling to do anything about it. Shot 64 times outside of the county jail, insane.

3) Things have gotten so bad in Baltimore relative to the local government and political class not being able to protect local citizens and businesses, some folks are finally saying enough is enough to the failure to protect:
  • Recently, 37 Baltimore restaurants and small businesses in the Fells Point section of Baltimore sent a letter to the mayor’s office entitled: “Letter To City Leaders From Fells Point Business leaders.”
  • In that letter they threatened to stop paying city taxes and other fees unless “basic and essential municipal services are restored.”
  • This basically meant that the business owners were tired of the crime that had engulfed their neighborhood and endangered their businesses, their employees, and customers.
  • What was once a historical bar district has turned violent with both violent crimes and violent mobs and the police and city officials have done nothing to stop the mayhem.
  • As a result of the letter, Baltimore police finally made their presence felt in conjunction with a state police contingent that helped police drunken drivers.
  • A local business owner expressed his frustration in a television interview: “It’s a shame. What they’re letting happen to Fells Point is what they let happen in the Inner Harbor, and now it has made its way here. There’s alcohol being sold by individuals out there, drugs, and clearly we all know about the shootings that took place last weekend. But there needs to be some control out there. There is none whatsoever.”
  • Another resident complained that the violence and crime is rising everywhere in the city, not just in this business district.
The good news is that these tax paying businesses may finally be getting the basic protection service that their taxes are paying for and what should be a basic function of the local government. The distressing news is 1) why did they have to threaten to withhold their tax payments to get what should be a given function of government and 2) how long will the city politicians actually help these folks and give them the protection they need once the news cameras and reporters leave?

4) Let's finish today’s insanity with some good news. If you have not heard, the Cuban people are finally resisting the dictatorship they have had to endure for over 60 years and are marching in the streets of Cuba to demand their freedom. As we have always said, people just want to be free, but that aspiration is often negated, sidetracked, or squashed by politicians here and abroad that want to control and manipulate people, destroying freedom in the process.

Thus, it is good to see folks finally saying, “Stop it, freedom is what we want, not government control.” To see some of this refreshing, freedom-related actions, go to the following link:

That will do it for today: freedom on the march in Cuba, businesses marching for government services and protection in Baltimore, violence on the march in Chicago, and inflation on the march everywhere.
