Political Class Insanity, October, 2022: Biden's Horrible Priorities, Blatant Misuse of IRS Resources, More Bad News For San Francisco and More

A quick catch up on the current political class insanity in this country:

1)Things are rough going in the country these days: inflation is at a 40 year high, mortgage rates are at a 20 year high, hundreds of thousands of Americnas are homeless, millions of Americans are hungry, tens of thousands of Americans are dying from the tons of fentanyl that is coming across our southern border, violent crime is rising across the country, we are close to World War III in Europe, China will likely invade Taiwan shortly, and the Social Security and Medicare systems are hurtling towards insolvency.

Given all of these unresolved issues that are facing Americans on a daily basis, what is Joe Biden worried about?  According to a recent Biden press conference, he is focused on the fact that some people have to pay a few extra bucks to get more leg room on commercial airplanes. Yes, forget these other dire issues, Biden wants to stop the “racist” practice of having not enough leg room on airplanes.

You cannot make this stuff up, his priorities defy logic:

2)We have all too often pointed out that a basic tenet, a  basic reason of any government entity, is to protect the lives and property of citizens.  No  matter how well any government entity performs on other criteria, failure to provide this basic protection of life and property will deem that government entity a failure.

And when a government fails at this basic function, residents and businesses will take their lives, their families, and their businesses elsewhere in order to protect themselves, their family members and their employees.

Probably no government entity has failed so miserably at this function than the San Francisco political class. Their stupid laws, enabling of drug addicts, and general  dereliction of duty has reuslted in an unhealthy, dangerous, and crime ridden city. This has caused residents and businesses to flee the city for safer settings and better quality of life.

The CEO of one of those businesses is not afraid to state the obvious reason for his business abandoning the city:

  • Davis Smith is the CEO of a company called Cotopaxi.

  • Cotopaxi sells outdoor gear and clothing and brags about  its commitment to the environment and global hunger.

  • He recently closed one of his stores in San Francisco because of what he called almost daily thefts, unrelenting vandalism, and concerns for the safety of his employees due to the failure of the city government to prevent crime and violence around his store’s location.

  • Specifically: “Our team is scared. They feel unsafe. They feel unsafe. Security guards are not helpful because the thieves know that security guards will not/cannot stop them. It’s impossible for retail stores to continue to trade in such circumstances, even though we pay taxes in a higher state than any other state.”

  • And more: “As of today we are closing our store due to rampant organized theft and lack of safety for our staff. Our store is being targeted by organized theft rings several days per week. They enter the store brazenly and take thousands of dollars worth of products and then walk out.”

  • And the criminals in the city were not only stealing the store's products but also the windows of the store.

  • He had to install  plywood to secure the store and he kept the store’s doors locked during business hours to cut down on shoplifting.

  • Finally:  “It’s tragic, but San Francisco seems to have descended into chaos. Many streets, parks, and other public spaces are overrun by drugs, criminals, homelessness, and it is because of inaction on the part of local leadership and law enforcement.”

Another day,  another failure of the American political class, and another reduction in the San Francisco tax base as another business gives up on the city.

3)Charlie Crist is the Democratic Party candidate for governor in my home state of Florida. He is unlikely to win, given the popularity and success of the current governor, Ron Desantis. And recent news reports regarding the Crist campaign is not helping:

  • Until  recently, Austin John Durrer was Crist’s campaign manager.

  • However, the campaign recently dropped Durrer from the Crist staff  “to focus on a family matter.”

  • Which was truthful in a sense but in reality, Durrer was recently arrested for alleged domestic violence.

  • According to news reports, Durrer’s girlfriend was his alleged victim and who displayed marks on her face after the alleged incident.

Another day and  another example of  alleged low morals by a member of the American political class.

4)Judicial Watch is a government watch guard  organization that does excellent work in uncovering government and politician misdoings. They recently received government documents that finally prove that Obama and the IRS purposely misused government power for political gain and intentionally under cut Americans’ First Amendment rights to participate fairly in the election process:

  • Government documents prove that top ranking IRS employees, Lois Lerner who was the former director of the IRS Exempt Organizations Unit, and Holly Paz, her top aide, knew that most Tea Party organizations were legally entitled to tax-exempt in the months prior to Obama’s reelection in 2012.

  • However, Lerner and Paz apparently and aggressively denied multiple Tea Party organizations’ tax exempt status, actions that were beneficial to the Obama campaign but obviously detrimental to Americans’ First Amendment rights.

  • Tea Party organizations were probably unanimous in their opposition to the reelection of Obama.

  • These documents proving political shenanigans by the Obama administration had been sealed under court order since 2017 as the government constantly tried to block the publication of these heinous election tactics.

  • Fortunately, Judicial Watch worked for years to get these documents available to understand and see that the IRS was misused for political purposes.

No surprise that American politicians like Obama would rather unfairly affect the political process even if Americans’ rights are trampled into the ground. Pathetic, despicable political behavior.

That will  do it for today: Biden’s horrible priorities, San Francisco politicians fail another company, another embarrassment of low morals by a political  operative, and Obama and the IRS unfairly interfere in an American election.

More By The Numbers: Everything The Government Touches Gets More Expensive Without Getting Any Better, California Is A Dumpster Fire, and The Mainstream Media Is The Real Threat To Democracy

On a periodic basis we do some posts that fall under the theme of “by the numbers.” Rather than trust what the American political class tells us about reality, we like to examine the real numbers and the real reality in the world to understand what is actually going on. Relying on politicians, and their cohorts in the media, to tell us what is reality is always a sucker bet. They have their own agendas and goals, usually centering around their needs and self-enrichment. So we need to look at the reality of the numbers to determine what is really going on.

Previous analyses of “by the numbers” can be accessed by entering the phrase in the search box above. This is the third and final post this month where we look at the numbers to truly find out how good, not likely, or bad, most likely, the American political class is doing in managing our tax dollars, protecting our freedoms, and resolving major issues that affect all of us.

1)The U.S. Federal government spends a lot of money, trillions of dollars a year. Unfortunately, as we have pointed out many times, we do not get a lot of value for our money:

  • We continue to under educate our kids with low performing public schools.

  • Our roads, bridges, and dams are crumbling apart after decades of neglect.

  • Social Security and Medicare are rapidly approaching bankruptcy.

  • Crime is rising across the country.

  • Millions of Americans are homeless, hungry and fighting drug addictions.

Yes trillions of dollars spent and never a problem getting resolved.

But it  is even worse than that. Consider some numbers on price inflation over the decades:

  • The price of bananas has increased almost 2 fold since 1980.

  • The price of a dozen eggs has increased  almost 4 fold.

  • The price of Levi’s 501 jeans has increased almost 5 fold.

  • The cost of a two door Ford Mustang sedan has increased almost 5 fold.

  • The price of an average home has increased almost 7 fold.

  • The annual cost of college has increased over 9 fold.

  • The cost of Medicare Part B premium has increased almost 18 fold.

A few observations:

  • The product categories which probably have the highest level of government and politician meddling, housing, Medicare and education, have had the highest inflation rates in the above categories.

  • Medicare is going bankrupt despite the Federal  government trying to fix it for decades, home ownership levels have been stagnant for decades,  and government student loan programs have saddled thousands of former students with high levels of student loan debt.

  • Categories where the Federal  government has done minimal or virtually no meddling in, clothes and food, have much lower rates of inflation.

  • In fact, the cost of a 16” color TV, a product category where there is virtually no Federal government or politician intervention, has seen prices drop a whopping 77% since 1980.

Bottom line: politicians spend a lot of our tax dollars and get no issues resolved AND often where they do spend a lot of our tax dollars, they make the situation worse and more expensive for  Americans.

2)California is a mess:

  • Its cities are filthy and suffering through rampant increases in violent crime.

  • The homeless problem is large and getting larger everyday.

  • The poverty level is the highest in the country.

  • The cost of living, for everything from gas to  housing to utilities, is among the highest in the country.

  • The state government is facing almost a trillion dollars in future unfunded financial liabilities.

  • The state may be the most heavily taxed state in the union.

  • Companies, both large and small, are leaving the state which is reducing the tax base and making it more difficult to pay today's bills and tomorrow’s unfunded financial liabilities.

And it  is  not just companies that are leaving or who would like to leave the state:

  • A recent opinion poll conducted by the Joint Venture Silicon Valley found  that 56% of those polled say they will  relocate out of the California Bay area at some point in  time.

  • This is up from 53% just a year ago.

  • Reasons for leaving in the poll include quality of life, taxes, high housing costs, crime, and homelessness.

  • While 47% of white respondents said they would be leaving the Bay area, 53% of black, 59% of Hispanics, and 57% of Asian Americans said they would be moving out of the area.

  • The least wealthy in the poll were the most likely to say they were moving with 57% of those polled who earn less than $35,000 a year saying they would be moving while only 41% of those earning $250,000 - $500,000 saying they would be  moving.

  • A whopping 71% of those polled who identify as Republicans said in the poll that they would be  leaving the state altogether while only 41% of Democrats said they would be leaving the state,

  • Another 15% said they would like to leave the Bay area but for various reasons cannot.

So the fact that California lost 182,000 residents in 2020 may just be the beginning of a continued mass exodus out of the state as residents look for a better, safer,  and a less expensive quality of life elsewhere. Now, while those leaving the Bay Area may just be moving to other parts of the state, I would bet a good portion of that 56% will be getting out of the state altogether.

The numbers do not lie: California’s political class has somehow ruined an incredible paradise on earth and is driving out tax paying residents and businesses, accelerating a likely financial collapse of the state government in the not too distant future as the tax base erodes and tax revenue collapses.

3)There were some surprising numbers from a recent New York Times opinion poll:

  • Many Americans actually do believe that is a “threat to democracy” in this country.

  • Now, the mainstream media would probably have you believe that the main threats to democracy include Donald Trump, MAGA supporters, Republicans, and Second Amendment supporters.

  • Surprisingly, a large portion of those polled said that the “mainstream media '' is a major threat to democracy in this country.

  • 71% of those polled said democracy is in danger and 84% of those 71% said that the mainstream  media is a continuing factor to that danger

  • 59% said that the mainstream media is a “major threat to democracy” and 25% said it is a “minor threat to democracy.

  • Only 29% of Democrats said that the mainstream media poses no threat to democracy, only 3% of Republicans say it poses no threat, and only 14% of independents  say it poses no threat.

This is a serious situation and sad commentary on our democracy. One would hope that any journalist or news reporting entity would be unbiased and would be just presenting the facts of the world and not be a “threat to democracy” in the eyes of citizens and voters.

If citizens view journalists and newscasters as threats, then any truth that they actually do report will be doubted and shunned aside, making it more difficult to resolve the many issues facing the country and endangering our freedoms at the same time. Sad and depressing set of numbers.

So, according to the numbers, the mainstream media is the primary danger to democracy and our freedoms, California is still a raging dumpster fire as businesses and residents look for a better life for themselves, their families, and their employees, and anything that the government and politicians touch becomes more expensive and not any better.

By The Numbers: Out Of Control Government Spending, Out Of Control Chicago Violence, and More

1)For over ten years we have pointed out that the Federal government was living and spending well beyond its means. Every year it has had to sell government bonds to make up the difference between what it spends and the taxes it collects. In fact, the Federal government has not run a budget surplus since the Bill Clinton Presidency, over twenty years ago and that was for only a short time.

The problem with such deficit spending is that the interest has to be paid on those government bonds every year, which means the interest line in the Federal government budget gets larger and larger every year as the national debt gets larger and larger every year. We have reached a point where tax dollars spent just on paying down the incurred debt is one of the biggest national expenses every year.

Under the Biden Presidency the national debt of the Federal  government just exceeded $31,000,000,000,000. That’s a mind blowing $31 TRILLION. To give you an idea how imposing and dangerous that debt level is, consider the following numbers:

  • In order to pay off that debt, every American taxpayer would have to write a check for over $221,000.

  • If you put that debt burden on every American citizen, then every American citizen, including newborns, toddlers, and kids would have to write a check for over $84,000.

  • If you had spent  $1,000,000 (one million dollars) a DAY since Christ was born, you still would have  not spent one trillion dollars, nowhere close to the $31 TRILLION national debt.

  • The Federal Reserve recently estimated that the total wealth in the country was about $123 TRILLION which means that every man, woman and  kid in the country would have to give up about 25% of everything they owned to pay off the national debt.

We are so screwed since, as readers of this blog know, the $31 TRILLION is only the current debt level of the Federal government. The unfunded future liabilities of the Federal government, debt and expenses coming due that cannot be paid with current tax streams, is a whopping $80+ TRILLION plus. Add in the debt incurred at the state and city level and a conservative estimate shows that the American political class has created a government debt crisis of about $125 TRILLION.

In other words, if the Federal Reserve total national wealth estimate of $123 TRILLION is correct, all  levels of government in this country owe more money than what the entire country is worth. Well done, American political class, spending more money than assets are available to pay for those expenses and debt, a classic definition of bankruptcy.

For a detailed account of the Federal Reserve total  wealth analysis, go to:

https://loathemygovernment.blogspot.com/2021/01/happy-new-year-and-welcome-to.html

2)Continuing with the Federal  government budget crisis theme, in fiscal year 2021, the Federal government collected more tax revenue than at any time in its history.  And yet, it STILL spent $2.8 TRILLION more than it collected.

This means that theoretically, every American taxpayer in 2021 would have paid an additional $20,000 in Federal income tax to make up for the budget deficit that Washington incurred. Many taxpayers do not make $20,000 a year, never mind paying an additional $20,000.

And the very sad part of this wild deficit spending is the following problems:

  • We still continue to under educate our kids despite a $2.8 TRILLION budget deficit.

  • Our roads, bridges and dams continue to fall apart despite  a $2.8 TRILLION budget deficit.

  • Millions of Americans are homeless, hungry, and drug addicted despite a $2.8 TRILLION budget deficit.

In other words we get heavily taxed, the politicians continue to run up massive budget deficits, and no issue, no problem ever gets resolved despite the government spending trillions of dollars on what?  We do not have an under taxation problem in this country, we have a political overspending problem in this country.

3)No by the numbers blog post is complete without reporting on the carnage of death that continues in the city of Chicago:

  • According to CBS news, at least 62 Chicago residents were shot during a mid-September weekend.

  • Nine of those 62 who were shot died from their wounds.

  • At least 6 of those 62 were under the age of 18.

  • As of October 10, 2022, the Chicago Sun Times reports that a whopping 527 Chicago residents have been murdered in the city, over 50 a month on average.

This has been going on for years and yet no one in the Chicago, Cook County, or Illinois political class has a clue on how to stop the violence or who cares to stop the violence.

4)A lot of Americans are relying on their IRA and 401k plans to have a healthy retirement. And a lot of their investments are in the stock market. And the underlying numbers supporting that approach is not looking good in the second year of the Biden presidency:

  • So far this year, falling stock prices have reduced the wealth of all American households by $9,000,000,000,000, nine TRILLION dollars.

  • And while $9 TRILLION is a big number, the scarier number is that this $9 TRILLION represents a whopping 25% or so of the entire stock market value, dropping from $42 TRILLION to $33 TRILLION.

  • With the stock market still  floundering, the total loss of wealth for the year could be over $10 TRILLION.

  • Granted, a lot of this loss was incurred by billionaires like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, who has lost billions of dollars in wealth this year, but many ordinary Americans are looking at their retirement accounts and getting worried.

  • CNBC  has reported that this might be the biggest loss in wealth in the stock market ever.

Massive failure by Biden, the Washington political class, and the Federal reserve when it comes to economic policy and management. It is endangering the quality of lives of millions of Americans.  The numbers are approaching catastrophic.

Enough numbers for today: Americans getting poorer by the day, Chicago getting deadlier by the week, and the country getting closer and closer to a massive government default every year. Have a great day!
