June, 2022, Part 2, Political Class Insanity: More Hypocrisy From the Political Class, More Lack of Problem Solving, and More Violence in Chicago.

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

1) We have always contended that a very, very basic function of government is to protect the lives and property of the citizens it is responsible for. Even if a government does a lot of other tasks well, if it cannot protect the lives and property of its citizens it is a failure.

Nowhere has the local political class failed more in this premise than in Chicago, as the latest crime reports indicate the continuing violence and crime situation in that city:

  • Over Memorial Day weekend, 47 Chicago residents were shot and 9 of those shot died from their wounds.

  • This was over a weekend, not a whole week, not a whole month.

  • This carnage happened despite the fact that the Chicago police department deployed extra resources and canceled vacation days to put more police officers on the street.

  • This 2022 Memorial weekend was much more violent than the same weekend last year when 32 people were shot and 3 died.

  • Despite these numbers, the chief of police in Chicago stated that violent crime is actually down in the city, talk about out of touch.

  • The shooting incidents included old and young victims, those just passing by and those involved with other shooters.

The school shooting in Texas was horrific and I do not want to downplay that horrible tragedy. But mass shootings happen everyday in many U.S. cities and the American political class has no clue how to stop it. Otherwise, 47 people would not have been shot weekend ago in Chicago.

And more gun control is not the answer in case someone wants to take that stand. The violence in Chicago, Los Angeles, and other liberal  cities and states are where gun control is the most strict and it has done nothing to stop the violence. Another failure to protect the lives and property of the citizens the government is responsible for.

2) Many in the political class, especially those on the left end of the political spectrum, are obsessed with the nonsense known as man made climate change and their dream that electric cars will fix a problem that maybe does not even exist. Many, many times we have debunked the notion that man made “global warming,” and the rebranded crisis, “climate change,” is not as bad as they make it out to be.

We have debunked this theory with science, statistics, and  historical reviews. But these climate change zealots always look only at the science and “facts” that support their theory and fears, never  looking at contrary science or facts.

One of the results of their obsession is the desire to see everyone drive an electric car since, in their eyes, a clean running electric car is much better for the environment. They seem to forget that electric cars only run when they have  electricity which does not magically appear at their home’s electric sockets, it has to be produced by burning other forms of energy to get the  electricity to

operate electric cars.

Which raises the question as to whether electric cars, when you consider the big picture, are better than gas powered cars for the environment as people like Al  Gore,  Joe Biden,  and  other left leaning politicians want you to believe?

Consider:

  • According to a recent  study published by Green Car reports, particulate matter thrown off from electric vehicle tires is 1,850 times greater than what comes out of the tailpipe of a gas powered car.

  • According to the EPA’s own website, these types of emissions, wherever they come from, can  be inhaled and cause health problems besides producing haze across the United States.

  • Other studies have confirmed these latest results: a 2020 study found that emissions from electric vehicle tires could be 1,000 times greater than those same types of emissions from gas powered cars’ tailpipes.

  • The reason for the high tire emissions on electric cars is the reality that heavy batteries in the electric vehicles weigh down the car and grind the tires into the road surface, causing the particulates to flake off the tires.

  • As electric car  makers strive to increase the range of their cars on a single charge, that requires more and heavier batteries be installed which weighs down the car and causes even more particulates to be created.

  • And as electric car makers move into the truck business, the problem gets even more critical.

As happens with just about every societal  problem, simple minded politicians usually do not have the ability to comprehend or examine the entire problem. They focus on only a subset of the problem, make changes, pass laws, institute regulations that they think will fix the sub-problem they are looking at but their actions make the real, bigger problem worse.

Such is their solution with electric cars. They think that if they can get everyone into an electric car life will be grand and they would resolve their climate change myth. But they do not look at the total picture in this case and what their “solution” does not take into account:

  • More  electric cars mean more polluting particulates in the air, water, and soil.

  • More electric cars means more devastating mining of the needed mineral for the electric car batteries, mining that has dire effects on the environment.

  • More electric cars means more strain on the rickety U.S. power grid which will mean more electric blackouts and brownouts, a crisis that climate change advocates have already experienced in California.

  • More electric cars and vehicles means higher potential for vehicle fires as witnessed by the electric bus fires in France and house fires in this country when electric vehicles burst into flames for no known reason while parked in home garages, causing extensive home damage.

Every decision in life has ramifications, often beyond the problem at hand. To think that American politicians have the ability to do comprehensive analysis and thus, develop comprehensive solutions to problems, is a fallacy, especially if you look at their track  record of failure. Electric cars are no different, politicians do not realize or do not care that their solution in one subset of the problem causes massive problems in other parts of the problem. There is no free lunch in life…or electric cars.

3) We saw and talked about so many examples during the pandemic where politicians were at their best executing the old adage, “do as I say,  not as I do:”

  • The mayor of Chicago shut down all of the hair salons in Chicago for health reasons and to hinder the spread of covid but forced her hair salon to open to get her hair styled.

  • The mayor of Beaumont, Texas forced all of the nail salons in her city to shut down but forced her nail salon open to get her nails done.

  • The governor of Michigan prohibited her citizens from traveling out of state but she flew to Florida to visit her father.

  • The governor of Illinois had a similar travel  ban in place in his state to prevent the spread of covid but allowed his family to travel to their horse farm in Florida.

  • The governor of California prohibited his citizens from gathering at restaurants for dining with friends, and also required  them to wear masks when outside, but attend a private dinner party with his friends,  none of whom were wearing masks.

We could go on but you get the idea: the rules and laws that politicians impose on us are often treated merely as suggestions for them and their friends and family. Which brings us to the latest “do as I say, not as I do” example:

  • Ayanna Pressley is a U.S.  Congresswoman.

  • She has been a long time and active advocate of the failed “defund the police” movement.

  • Those cities that followed her advice and reduced police funding have seen dramatic raises in crime in their cities as fewer police resources resulted in more crime, danger, and violence inflicted on citizens.

  • But as she has called for defunding police departments, she continues to spend thousands of tax dollars on private security forces for herself:

  • According to the Daily Caller: “Democratic Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley, who has repeatedly pushed to defund the police, spent thousands of taxpayers’ dollars on private security, according to newly released Statement of Disbursements of the House records reviewed by the Daily Caller. Pressley spent $14,000 of her Member Representational Allowance (MRA) on “security service” between January and March 2022, according to the new Statement of Disbursements of the House records. In 2021, Pressley spent $63,000 of her MRA on “security service”— spending $28,000 between Oct. 1, 2021 and Dec. 31, 2021, and $35,000 between May 2021 and August 2021.”

So let’s review: a U.S. Congresswoman wants to put ourselves and our families in more danger by reducing the police resources available to protect us. But goes ahead and spends our tax money to provide private security resources for herself, to protect her from the same potential for violence and crime that she denies to us? A classic example of “do as a say, not as I do.”

That will do it for today: more hypocrisy from the political class, more lack of problem solving from the political class, and more violence and mass shootings in Chicago.

June, 2022, Part 1, Political Class Insanity: Failure to Protect in Seattle, the Failures of California's State Politicians Have Global Ramifications, and California Goes Orwellian by Insisting That a Bee is a Fish.

1)Politicians and government bureaucrats have a long track record of telling white lies, little lies, and big lies. One of the deep philosophical question we have often posed is do politicians actually believe the lies they put forth or do they think we are too stupid to know they are lying.

One of the most atrocious, and ridiculously funny, lies just happened in California:

  • Most people know what a fish is, aquatic creatures that live in the ocean, seas, rivers, etc.

  • Pretty straightforward stuff, would not think anyone in government could screw up that description.

  • But in California, a state judge recently ruled that bees are a type of fish and thus, are protected under the state’s endangered species laws.

  • Specifically, as reported by the Daily Wire: “Although the term fish is colloquially and commonly understood to refer to aquatic species, the term of art employed by the Legislature in the definition of fish in section 45 is not so limited,” Judge Ronald B. Robie wrote in the majority opinion in the case. Under the California Fish and Game Code, a “fish” is defined as “a wild fish, mollusk, crustacean, invertebrate, amphibian, or part, spawn, or ovum of any of those animals.” The code also defines an “endangered species” as “a native species or subspecies of a bird, mammal, fish, amphibian, reptile, or plant which is in serious danger of becoming extinct.” It defines “threatened species” in a similar way.”

So rather than just enact a small piece of legislation to identify bees as an endangered species, the state government and judicial system would rather call a bee a fish and be done with it. This type of chicanery certainly suggests a George Orwell/1984 type mentality where “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength” and in California, a bee is a fish.

We can joke about this idiocy but it is a slippery slope. If those in charge can change the definition of what anything is to suit their needs, then we as a freedom loving nation are at the whims and threats of a political class that actually believe that a bee is the same as a fish under the laws they put forth.

I believe Abe Lincoln once said: “If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? Four, just because you call it a leg does not make it a leg.” Even if you call a bee a fish, it does not make it a fish…. unless  you are in California.

2) We have  often covered the reality that for the first time ever, the state of California is losing population, likely because of the sad quality of life that the state’s political class has created:

  • California residents and businesses have to pay some of the highest tax burdens in the whole country.

  • Gas prices are very high in the state.

  • The cost of electricity is probably the highest in the entire country.

  • The state’s public schools do a horrible job of educating their kids vs. the rest of the county.

  • Although some very rich people live in California, mostly in Silicon Valley and Hollywood, the state has one of the highest poverty rates in the country.

  • The big cities in the state have horrific and dangerous homeless problems.

  • The state government long term financial viability is a huge problem given its ever growing government debt and unfunded liabilities problems.

  • Crime is rampant and getting worse everyday, affecting every income level in the state.

As a result, many state residents and businesses have left the state to escape the conditions listed above. Most go to other states but apparently many leave the country altogether.

Which has created some unexpected problems overseas:

  • Many of the former California residents have fled to Portugal and apparently, the native Portuguese are not happy about it.

  • Native movements have  sprung to protest the influx of Californians to the country.

  • For example: “You cannot deny that places like Lisbon have become much more appealing for young, creative people with money to spend. The effect on the economy and the way the buildings look — no longer empty — is astronomical,” Luis Mendes, a geographer at the University of Lisbon, told the Los Angeles Times. “But the average Portuguese person can no longer afford to live in the center of Lisbon. Rents have gone up five times over a few years. Even the basic things, such as buying groceries, take longer trips outside the city center than they used to.”

  • As a result, the national government in Portugal has suspended its so-called “Golden Visa” program in large cities which offered residency to any foreigner who purchased a home valued at over 500,000 Euros, an offer that was usually executed by Americans,  mostly Californians.

  • This has driven up housing prices which has driven up eviction rates of native Portuguese.

  • Things have  gotten so bad for the natives, that a recent local newspaper published an opinion that Californians should “go home” and leave the country because they are making it unlivable.

Interesting that the utter failure of the California political class is directly causing problems around the world, a truly global order of failure.

3) We have often discussed the tenet that a very, very basic function of government is to protect the lives and property of its citizens. No matter how well a government entity performs other duties, if it cannot protect its citizens then it is a failure.

And apparently that failure has been very big in the city of Seattle:

  • The city of Seattle has developed a well deserved reputation over the past few years of being a lawless, violent city to visit or live in.

  • Dramatic rises in violent crime and homelessness has made the city a very dangerous place.

  • So dangerous that Amazon has decided to protect its employees by closing one of its locations within the city limits and moving those employees to safer quarters.

  • The specific location in the city is at Third Avenue and Pine Street, a crime infested area, which led Amazon to issue the following statement: “Given recent incidents near 3rd and Pine, we’re providing employees currently at that location with alternative office space elsewhere. We are hopeful that conditions will improve and that we will be able to bring employees back to this location when it is safe to do so.”

  • The area’s crime and violence has gotten so bad that the city’s police force had to deploy a mobile police precinct in the area to cope with the situation.

  • Small  businesses are also affected by the crime wave as described by Brandon Davis who runs a local small business: “Sometimes I don’t want to work late because I’m thinking maybe it’ll be me that gets shot. You come out here and it is a open drug market. I’d like the mayor to have less press conferences and I’d like him to actually tell the police to enforce the laws as written.”

  • The  mayor’s response: “These continued acts of violence and street disorder are unacceptable and beyond tragic. My heart is filled with sorrow. … We are launching a comprehensive and collaborative approach to address this crisis.”

A lot of  nice words but the damage has already been done. Big businesses leaving, and taking their positive economic impact with them, small  business owners scared for their lives, and another major failure of a political class, the politicians in Seattle.

That will do it for today: failure to protect in Seattle, the failures of California's state politicians have global  ramifications, and California goes Orwellian by insisting that a bee is a fish.

June, 2022, By The Numbers: Gas Prices Through The Roof, Federal Government Debt Through the Roof, and Homeless Idiocy In San Francisco Through The Roof

On a periodic basis we do some posts that fall under the theme of “by the numbers.” Rather than trust what the American political tells us about reality, we like to examine the real numbers and the real reality in the world to understand what is actually going on. Relying on politicians, and their cohorts in the media, to tell us what is reality is always a sucker bet. They have their own agendas and goals, usually centering around their needs and self-enrichment. So we need to look at the reality of the numbers to determine what is really going on.

Previous analyses of “by the numbers” can be accessed by entering the phrase in the search box above. This is the third and final post this month where we look at the numbers to truly find out how good, not likely, or bad, most likely, the American political class is doing in managing our tax dollars, protecting our freedoms, and resolving major issues that affect all of us.

1) We have often discussed the fatalistic budget and spending numbers of the Federal government. The Washington political class has run up a national debt that is now over $30 TRILLION. The Congressional Budget office estimates that in addition to this $30 trillion debt load, they predict that the amount of unfunded liabilities, future expenses that the government has no idea how to fund, mostly for future Social Security and Medicare expenses, is over $80 TRILLION.

Consider a few numbers and calculations:

  • In 2021, the IRS processed about 168 million tax returns from American citizens.

  • That means each American taxpayer would have to write a check for about $179,000 just to pay off the CURRENT national debt.

  • In reality, they would have  to pay more since every day the Federal government spends more money than it collects.

  • To pay off the $80 trillion in unfunded future liabilities, each American taxpayer would have to pay about $476,000 more in taxes.

  • Thus, to dig the Federal  government out of its debt hole that the Washington political establishment has created, every American taxpayer would have to lay out $655,000 to pay off the current debt and future unfunded liabilities.

Obviously, that math is not possible, American households have nowhere near that amount of wealth available to pay off the debt. Taxing businesses to pay off the debt and liabilities would also not be feasible since: 1) there is not enough taxable revenue in the American business world to cover that debt and 2) even if there was, for businesses to stay in business to pay that amount of taxes would require them to raise prices to astronomical heights creating runaway inflation.

Taxing the rich, a rallying cry of liberal politicians would not work  either. For example, in 2021, according to Forbes, Jeff Bezos of Amazon fame was the richest American with a net worth of about $200 million. If you confiscated, not taxed, his entire wealth then the $200 billion would pay off about .7% of the national debt and about ,25% of the unfunded liabilities. If you only taxed his wealth at say 2% of the total amount, an actual proposal by some liberal Washington politicians, then you would pay off about .01% of the current national debt .005% of the unfunded liabilities.

The bottom  line is that the amount of debt being run up by Washington politicians is unsustainable, not possible to be paid off, and will eventually crash our economy and our democracy if changes are not made to government spending.

All of this lead us to the latest, and horrible, numbers that were recently crunched by the Congressional Budget Office:

  • If nothing changes in Washington, the Congressional Budget Office predicts that the Federal government will be spending over $1 trillion every fiscal year for the foreseeable future beyond what it collects in taxes.

  • For the next decade, the annual government spending deficit will average $1.6 trillion.

  • This means that the Federal  government will on average spend $43 million a DAY that it cannot cover with current tax collections.

  • If nothing changes, the Congressional Budget Office predicts that the 2032 annual government spending deficit will be $2.3 trillion.

  • These deficits over the next ten years are projected to be worth 5.1% of the gross domestic product (GDP), the value of everything the entire U.S. economy produces.

  • Over the last 50 years, the annual federal deficit has averaged 3.5% of GDP.

  • These spending deficits are the largest in both actual and percentage of GDP that the Federal government has ever operated at.

  • The total national debt is projected by CBO to run near 100% of the country’s GDP every year, exceeding the record set by that metric during World War II.

  • The ratio of federal debt to GDP is more than double what it was in 2000.

You get the idea. The Federal government current and future debt is out of control and outrageously high, it cannot be covered with increased taxation, and current spending trends will make the debt situation that much worse over time. Eventually programs like Social Security and Medicare will be severely cut back in a last ditch attempt by the Federal government to avoid going bankrupt and defaulting on its debt obligations which will cause severe hardships for tens of millions of Americans.

The rest of the world will eventually lose trust in the value of the American dollar, which will contribute \to already skyrocketing inflation. And the current Washington politicians still do not understand the magnitude and depth of the problem as they continue to send money overseas, give their Federal employees free Peloton exercise subscriptions, shower themselves with benefits and high  salaries, and make sure their family members, friends and political  donors get rich while the country sinks into a sea of red ink. The numbers don't lie.

2) It is certainly no secret that gasoline prices in this country have risen to ridiculous heights since Biden became President. And while he wants us to believe that the Russian/Ukraine conflict is responsible for the gas price increase, that is a ridiculous lie to try to hoist on the American public. Gas prices started rising way before that war broke out.

In fact, gas prices started rising almost the same day that Biden took office. His killing off of the Keystone pipeline, his suspending drilling leases on Federal lands, etc., were his doing, not Putin’s doing or impacts from the Ukraine invasion.

There is a saying that a manager I once worked for had and managed by: “Don’t tell me the seas were rough, just tell me you brought the ship safely into port.” In other words, stop bitching and start acting to remedy the situation. Obviously, Biden had no clue how to execute that saying.  Rather than bring the ship into port and eliminate crushing gas prices, he sits around trying to place the blame on others without doing anything to fix the problem.

And it is a big problem and it has happened on his watch:

  • Gas prices in this country recently hit an all time high, the average price for a gallon of gas hitting $4.60 per gallon.

  • This average is about a ghastly 92% higher since Biden took office and I would bet that at least half of that increase happened BEFORE Putin invaded Ukraine.

  • Gas is $.44 more expensive than it was last month.

  • On  Memorial Day 2021, about a year ago, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.05 which was less than today but was still probably up 50% since the day Biden became President.

Again, if Biden was a leader he would spend less time telling us who is to blame and more time resolving the crisis, “bringing the ship safely into port,” and we all would be better off. But given that Biden was the VP in the Obama administration, an administration that spent eight years blaming everyone and everything else than themselves for their failures, his behavior is no surprise.

What is also very interesting is the numbers that occur at the state level for

average price for a gallon of gas:

  1. Arizona: $4.95 a gallon

  2. California: $6.15 a gallon

  3. Hawaii: $5.44 a gallon

  4. Illinois: $5.00 a gallon

  5. Maine: $4.77 a gallon

  6. Nevada: $5.30 a gallon

  7. New York: $4.93 a gallon

  8. Oregon: $5.20 a gallon

  9. Washington: $5.23 a gallon

These states currently have the highest priced gas in the country. I find it interesting that states with the highest gas prices are those states that have a long tradition of being run by liberal politicians/Democrats: Washington, Oregon, New York, Maine, Illinois, Hawaii, and California.

I  would bet on a closer look that these states also have the highest state gas taxes in the country, a double whammy on those residents in those states: high taxes on everything else, property, sales, , etc., and also gas taxes which makes the gas burden that much worse in those political blue states.

Bad times for Americans’ transportation needs and an administration  and President that are clueless on how to resolve it even though two short years ago this was not even close to being a crisis for American drivers.

3) I debated whether to put the following piece of political idiocy in this “by the numbers” post or save it for our next “political class insanity" post. I decided to go with it here since the single number it has is really a doozy:

  • London Breed is the mayor of San Francisco.

  • Her city has a tremendous homeless problem which manifests itself in public defecation, public urination, public use of illegal drugs, drug overdoses, violence, etc.

  • Her solution: spend an additional $6.5 million over five years to remedy the situation or at least alleviate it to some degree.

  • The problem: she wants the money to only alleviate homelessness of transgender people.

  • Forget helping the homeless elderly who cannot find a place to live because of Biden’s inflationary policies.

  • Forget the homeless veterans who may be suffering any number of maladies from their service and combat experiences.

  • Forget the families who may be homeless because the breadwinner lost his or her job.

  • Nope, Breed wants to spend the money only on transgender homeless people, which number only about 400, in a city with thousands and thousands of homeless people.

  • Specifically: "Transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming San Franciscans are eighteen times more likely to experience homelessness compared to the general population, and we know that the rates are even higher for our minority trans communities. With one of the largest TGNC populations in the country, we not only must ensure that all San Franciscans have access to housing and essential resources through continued investments, but we can show the country that we continue to be a leader on supporting and protecting our trans communities."

$6.5 million for only a certain type of citizen. Any number of problems wrong with this stupidity:

  • First off, it is probably illegal to use taxpayer money for only a certain segment of the population.

  • This approach is so easy to game,  anyone could claim they are transgender to get a peice of the $6.5 million, it is not as if you can say a transgender person has a certain skin color, a certain ethnic background, a certain DNA, a person would just be able to claim their are transgender.

  • If you do the math of $6.5 million over 5 years to serve only 400 people, it turns out that the city will theoretically be spending about $9 a day to help a homeless transgender person.

  • I doubt you can feed and shelter a person for $9 a day, about $270 a month in a high priced city like San Francisco and that assumes the $6.5 million goes directly to the homeless transgender people.

  • Once you take overhead costs out of the the $6.5 million along with government incompetence and fraud, that $9 a day goes down dramatically.

I have no idea how to handle the large and growing homeless problem in this country. But I am pretty sure helping one a small minority of those that are homeless, whatever the criteria is, does not resolve the bigger problem affecting people of all sexual orientations, genders, education backgrounds, etc. Another stupid government program as proven by some simple numbers.

Stupid spending in San Francisco, stupid and overwhelming debt driven spending in D.C., and the inability to manage an inflationary economy by Biden. The numbers don't lie even if politicians do.
