Breaking News - Politicians Could Not Care Less About Your Best Interests

The title of this blog is really a question to the American public: when are we finally going to realize that politicians could not care less about your best interests? Why do we continually think that they really care about putting our priorities first when we constantly get examples of the exact opposite. Consider just four examples:
  1. The latest example of the constituents be damned comes from Colorado. The White House has confirmed that an assistant deputy chief of staff made contact with Colorado house speaker Andrew Romanoff, exploring the possibility of Romanoff not challenging the incumbent U.S. Democratic Senator from Colorado, Michael Bennet, in the primary. Seems the White House did not want a primary battle between two Democrats and wanted to see that Bennet, their choice, had a clear path to the November election. The deputy chief of staff discussed three specific Federal jobs in the area of international development that might be available to Romanoff if he got out of the race. I always thought that both the primaries and the real elections were all about citizens deciding who they wanted to represent them? I never thought it was about the political class manipulating who ran and who did not run and using taxpayer funded government jobs as bribes to rig the election slates. Should not the Colorado voters decide who runs in the November election to represent them and not some political cabal two thousand miles away in Washington? The whole thing stinks, much like Chicago politics.
  2. This example stinks as much as the recent revelation that the same political thinking went on in Pennsylvania, As you may recall, in that case, the White House enlisted Bill Clinton to talk with Joe Sestak who was challenging a sitting Democratic incumbent, Senator Arlen Specter, in the Pennsylvania primary. Same set up as Colorado: Obama and the rest of the Washington crowd wanted to see the incumbent Specter have a clear path to the November election. Clinton talked about getting Sestak some sort of high profile prestige job, possibly on a Presidential advisory board, while Sestak remained in the House Of Representatives. The rumor was this was supposed to be Obama's payback to Specter for switching parties and supporting some of Obama's legislative agenda. Despite the pressure, democracy prevailed, Sestak stayed in the primary, and won it. Due to Sestak's determination, the voters in Pennsylvania did have their voting rights and power protected by having a real choice and not a politically dictated choice.
  3. Going aback a little ways, lets not forget about ex-governor Rod Blagojevich. He comes to mind today in the midst of the Sestak and Romanoff incidents since the trial for Mr.Blagojevich is about to get underway. As you may recall, he is accused of misusing his power as governor to more or less raffle off Obama's vacant senate seat in Illinois to the highest bidder. Rather than consider the best possible candidate for the residents of his state, Blagojevich is accused of trying to shake down any number of people for his own benefit, constituents interests' be damned. As an Illinois politician, defense testimony in his trial could be very interesting and possibly damaging to other politicians when it comes to trading favors at the expense of the voters.
  4. And finally, my favorite example of why politicians do not care about our welfare. This one goes back about nine years ago in New Jersey. Shortly after the 9-11 attacks, the Federal government made one time cash grants available to each state to be used to improve their terrorism prevention plans. At that time, both the Governor's seat and both houses of the state legislature were controlled by the Democrats. Thus, they were able to control where and how much each city and town in the state received from the New Jersey grant. Many small towns, that were ruled by Democrats at that time, all of which would have made very poor/low profile terrorism targets, received money to improve their terrorism plans but also were allowed to use the money for expenses that could only remotely be tied to terrorism prevention. However, Atlantic City, home of the state's casinos and a major, major tourist destination, received absolutely no funds from the grant. I initially thought this was pretty stupid, Atlantic City would be a prime target for terrorism vs. just about any other part of New Jersey. Lots of tourists, highly concentrated in a small area, prime target. However, at that time, Atlantic City and the county it was in was ruled by Republicans. Thus, rather than do the right thing and protect a prime terrorism target, even though it was being governed by the rival political party, the Democrats in New Jersey decided it was better to offer political patronage to other Democrats at the possible expense of citizens that just happened to be attacked in a Republican run city. Pathetic, fortunately they got away with their selfishness since no attacks have yet to come about on Atlantic City.
These are just four of the more blatant examples where politicians do not care about your voting rights and power, your welfare, or in the case of Atlantic City, you safety and life. They are only worried about how they can benefit from the situation, how they can manipulate the system to get their favorites elected, or how they can use taxpayer funds and government positions to advance their welfare and agenda. And lets be very clear, Obama is no different than any other politician that came before him, Democrat or Republican. His promise of a new era of open government, non-use of lobbyists, back room politics is bogus. As we have said before, he is just another Chicago politician.

The saddest part of the whole situation is that I really believe that most of the political class does not see what is wrong with this type of behavior. They have been immersed in the sleaze and slime for so long that this is normal for them even if most Americans find it repugnant. That is why 1) all incumbents up for election in November need to be dumped out in the street and 2) Step 39, term limits, from "love My Country, Loathe My Government" needs to be instituted. If they cannot see the problem, they are unlikely to change their behavior. We will have to change it for them by removing them from office.
