The Deaths, Carnage, and Stupidity of Fast and Furious - The Mexican Perspective

We have talked about the disgraceful and fatal Fast and Furious gun running operation that the Obama administration ran out of the Justice Department’s ATF organization a number of times:
  • The program allowed, and encouraged, American gun shop owners and dealers to illegally sell heavy weaponry to Mexican criminal and drug cartel entities.
  • The supposedly overall plan was to track the weapons sold to identify how the cartels and criminals moved the weapons and eventually arrest the entire gun running operation.
  • How the Federal government/ATF were actually going to track the movement of individual guns and weapons is still a mystery and somewhat of a joke.
  • Various credible news reports in this country put the number of weapons moved out of the U.S. into Mexico as several thousand.
  • This operation was a violation of at least one U.S. Federal law and probably violated any number of international treaties since our government conspired to sell weapons across international borders and did not even if have the decency to tell the Mexican authorities what was going on.
  • In a large Mexican law enforcement raid earlier this year of a drug cartel headquarters, many Fast Furious weapons were found in the armory of the cartel’s leader.
  • A U.S. Border Patrol agent, Brian Terry, was killed by Mexican nationals using the very guns that the Obama administration allowed to cross over the border into Mexico via Fast and Furious.
  • To my knowledge, none of the thousands of weapons were ever non-violently tracked nor those who smuggled the weapons were ever arrested and/or prosecuted.
  • To possibly make things look even worse, a Mexican national is being held in Federal detention in Chicago but his lawyer has filed legal discovery papers for his defense that allege that the Fast and Furious operation intent was not to trace the trail of illegal weapons. The legal documents assert that the Obama administration actually took sides in the drug cartel wars. The assertion is that the administration decided to provide weapons only to the Sinola drug cartel with the half-baked notion that if the Sinola cartel wiped out or minimized the other cartels, the Obama administration would then only have to deal with one criminal enterprise, not many. Sounds fantastic and unbelievable but the legal documents to this effect have been filed.
One screw up after another from the logistics to the fatalities on both sides of the border to the expense of the operation to the breaking of laws and international treaties with nothing positive in return.

But this story has been buried by much of the main stream press in this country, despite the horrendous consequences and incredible bungling of the entire ill-fated and unneeded program, in order to protect the administration. However, since it is the Mexicans who are bearing the violent brunt of the Fast and Furious fatal fall out, they have no trepidation investigating and reacting to what these weapons have done to their country and citizens.

Earlier this month, their national television network, Univision, televised an in-depth story and analysis of what this program has meant to ordinary Mexican citizens. The program included details of what has happened along with some gruesome video footage of the havoc and death these weapons have wrought. The details of the investigation and along with the videos can be found at:

A word to the wise: there some very graphic scenes of death included on this link so please be advised and skip the murder scenes if this will upset you.

Some of the details and findings form the Univision effort include the following:
  • On January 30, 2010, a gang of at least 20 men parked outside a birthday party of high school and college students in Ciudad Juarez. Around midnight, some of the men, who were later identified as hired guns for the Mexican cartel La Linea, rushed into the house and opened fire on a gathering of nearly 60 teenagers. Outside the house, the remaining men shot and killed a screaming neighbor and several students who had managed to escape. Fourteen young Mexicans were killed, and 12 more were wounded before gunfire stopped.
  • Univision found a Mexican Army document that verified that three of the high powered weapons used in the attack were bought through the Fast and Furious program.
  • Univision uncovered another Fast and Furious weapons massacre that occurred on September 2, 2009. This attack left 18 young Mexican men killed at a rehabilitation center in Ciudad Juarez, according to the Univision report. The television show found that these people were also killed via guns that came through Fast and Furious.
  • Univision took the list of Fast and Furious weapon serial numbers and cross referenced it to the serial numbers of guns that Mexican authorities had obtained at murder and criminal scenes. The comparison of lists found that at least a hundred of the matched weapons were from the Fast and Furious program and 57 of the other weapons had not come up as part of the Congressional investigation of Fast and Furious.
  • The television show’s video images included a photo, which showed pools of blood in the streets of a Mexican town after another killing spree committed by murderers armed with Fast and Furious weapons. Other video footage showed where some of the victims were killed and how the cartel’s hit men had chased their victims to their deaths.
  • And the most serious accusation from the Univsion production is the most blood curdling, especially since it allegedly came from a high ranking Federal government official. While some of the weapons allegedly had tracking devices embedded in them, there was a concern that the batteries powering these tracking devices did not last long. That is when, according to Univision, that the ATF official decided that the only way to track the Fast and Furious weapons was to gather them up at crime sites in Mexico. Obviously, this change in tracking methodology required violent, armed confrontations to be successful, confrontations that were highly likely to result in deaths and injuries to Mexican citizens.
  • According to one interview on the broadcast, these were not light weight guns and weapons. Many of these weapons were military grade weapons that could take out armored vehicles and structures.
Why we did not hear about these unpleasant but necessary details of a massive screw up by the Obama administration via our own main stream media is a discussion for another day? If true, and this Univision investigation looks to be legitimate, we should be ashamed of our government’s thought process, our government’s illegal activities, our government’s incompetence in executing this illegal program and most of all, our government’s lack of respect and compassion for the dozens or hundreds of Mexican civilians that have been killed using fast and Furious weaponry.

Now, some Obama supporters might say that the drug cartels have enough wealth and reach that they could have gotten weapons from other sources if the U.S. government had not facilitated the purchase and distribution of heavy weaponry. That might be true but at least the blood of innocent human beings would not be on our hands and our laws and respect for international treaties and laws would still be intact.
