January, 2022, Part 3, Political Class Insanity: Chicago Mayor Still Clueless, Massive Criminal Fraud In The Government Covid Program, and People Flee Oppression In Blue States

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

1) Chicago and its violent and criminal epidemic have often been a topic in this blog. Every year,  it seems, the city sets records for the number of people wounded, maimed, and killed by an ever increasing violent crime rate. Multiple politicians at the city and county level of Chicago have been clueless when it comes to stopping the violence and crime.

The latest, and possibly the biggest political failure, is the current Chicago mayor, Lori Lightfoot. Under her leadership, the city seems to set new records for crime and violent deaths every week or month. And she continues to be clueless on how to reduce the carnage and crime:

  • Not only is killing and wounding of citizens on the rise, other types of crime are rampaging through the city with retail stores being the favorite target of violent gangs of criminals.

  • Not knowing how to get the criminals under control, the mayor recently blamed the retail stores for not protecting themselves from being looted.

  • Since a very, very basic function of any government entity is to protect the lives and property of the people that the government entity serves, failure to do so is a failure of that government entity, not the victim of the crimes against those businesses and citizens.

  • This is like blaming a rape victim for the rape because she/he did not protect themselves.

  • Specifically, Lightfoot recently stated that, “We still have retailers that won’t institute plans like having security officers in their stores, making sure that they’ve got cameras that are actually operational, locking up their merchandise at night, chaining high-end bags. These purses can be something that is attracting a lot of organized retail theft units.”

  • So, in her world, paying taxes to support a police and judicial system  is not enough, these businesses should pay even more of their limited expense and revenue dollars to hire guards, install security systems, and incur more expenses because the local government cannot do their job.

So pathetic and such a failure, no wonder people and businesses are fleeing death traps like Chicago and going where government entities actually do their job, protecting lives and property.

2) Probably hundreds of times over the years we have pointed out how inept, inefficient, and ineffective the American political class is when it comes to spending our tax money. Programs never fulfill the promises that  politicians promise and the vast majority of government programs in this country are riddled with fraud and criminal activity. From the local town hall to Washington D.C., our tax dollars are almost always wasted at astronomical levels.

The state of Colorado recently reinforced this observation::

  • The state of Colorado likely paid out about $73 million in fraudulent unemployment benefits to undeserving people during the first year of the pandemic.

  • In addition, it also failed to resolve most of the customer complaints related to unemployment fraud.

  • These conclusions come from a recent state government audit.

  • These screw ups included paying $3.9 million in unemployment benefits to dead people, $5 million to people who were in prison, and over $100,000 to kids under the age of 18.

  • The state may now be liable to paying money back to the Federal government because of its incompetence.

  • And this may not be the total amount of waste and fraud:: “(I)t might take years before (the state) has final statewide and nationwide totals for fraudulent payments, as we continue to investigate and verify.”

  • But according to audit report, Colorado is not that bad relative to other states when it comes to criminal fraud robbing taxpayer money since about $4.4 billion in fraud is believed to have happened in Arizona, more than $600 million in Washington, $462 million in Ohio, $20 billion in California and $380 million in Kansas.

  • Colorado government entities responded that they are taking steps to fix their incompetencies but this is after at least $73 million walked out the front door.

As we are prone to do, consider:

  •  There are about 10,000 homeless citizens in Colorado.

  • Using national meal averages, that $73 million lost to fraud could have paid for about 25 million meals.

  • Which means. theoretically, that money lost to fraud could have bought 250 meals for each of the 10,000 homeless Colorado citizens.

Imagine how many meals could be created using the whopping $20 billion that the state of California lost to pandemic fraud. Or how many drug addicts could be treated or homeless who could be sheltered for the tens of billions of dollars the polticiains across the country lost to fraud because of their incompetence. So disgusting and insulting to taxpayers.

3) We have also covered this topic many times but let's do it again with the latest population data:

  • It is no surprise, based on any number of data sources, that Americans are leaving high crime, high taxation, and high government regulations to states that allow them more freedom to do what they want with their lives by keeping more of their hard earned money and being safe from the ever increasing violent crime going on in certain states.

  • As we have shown before, states like New Jersey, New York, Illinois, and California are losing population like never before because of the failure of the state politicians to do their job.

  • Their failures include higher and higher taxation while government service quality deteriorates, the inability to curb sky high crime rates, the higher than normal cost of living, oppressive and unnecessary pandemic measures, and running up huge future unfunded government liabilities.

  • The states that always fall into this category include New Jersey, Illinois, New York, and California.

  • Recent studies published by the Yankee Institutes show that 770,000 Americans and legal residents moved from around the country to mostly southern states from April, 2020 thru July, 2021.

  • California lost the most movers, losing just over 429,000 residents.

  • Texas and Florida saw the largest population increases over the above time period, with Texas gianing 170,000 people and Florida gaining about 221,000.

  • Keep in mind that these two states have much lower taxes (including no state income tax), lower crime rates, less government regulations, and a higher quality of life.

  • These two states also had a much more freedom based, liberal approach to pandemic lockdowns, using much more common sense and strategic plans than the dictatorial approach of states like New York, California and other population losing states.

People want to be free. They want to keep as much of their hard earned wealth as possible which allows them more freedom to live their lives the way they want. They want freedom to be able to leave their house and not be scared they are going to be a victim of a crime. They want to be free of government regulations that include overly oppressive lockdowns, mandates, and rules that the politicians themselves often ignore.

America was built on the concept of freedom and Americans will look for that dream wherever it is, even if it means moving themselves, their families, and  their businesses to another location. Somehow, though, the politicians in New York, New Jersey, and other states like these do not understand this basic premise and desire. As a result, their states are heading into an inescapable financial death spiral as taxpayers and businesses flee for freedom.

Thus, today we learned that government continues to misuse taxpayer wealth, losing it to fraud and crime, Chicago politicians are still clueless about how to rein in crime, and people want to be free and are fleeing to states that allow them to do so.

October, 2015, Part 5, By the Numbers: What Americans Want and What Politicians Deliver (Or Really Care About)

This is the fifth post among a few days worth of discussion of “by the numbers.” We do this theme occasionally where we look at the reality of the numbers in the world and not the lies, deceptions, and spin of the American political class. I used to work for a boss whose favorite quote was: “There is nothing more devastating to an opinion than the correct number.” By looking at the statistics, trends, and numbers in our world we can cut through the politicians’ smoke screen to truly understand what is going on and hopefully, remedy the issues of the day.

The numbers we have looked at this week often had a common thread running almost through all of them: the views, positions, and opinions of the majority of Americans are often the exact opposite of the views and related actions that our politicians own. Since we are supposed to be living in a representative government system one would hope that the laws, rules, and government functions that our politicians oversee reflect the thinking, hopes, and views of the American citizenry.

As the numbers will usually show, that is nowhere close to reality, which I think reflects two underlying negative trends:

  1. American politicians vote and act for their own personal interests first, Americans’ interests and well being being of secondary consideration. If a politician’s actions can get them more votes or more campaign cash for their perpetual reelection campaigns, than that is their priority, usually not the priorities of their constituents.
  2. Second, I personally believe that today’s American politicians take care of their special interest friends and financiers first and foremost, and the interests of those special interest friends (e.g.unions, corporations, lobbyists, etc.) are usually not in alignment with what the majority of Americans have as their priorities.
Keep these two possibilities in mind as we go “by the numbers” for the next few days and try to show the major disconnect between what Americans want and what politicians are doing:

1) Stephen Moore, writing for the Heritage Foundation, put together a fascinating set of numbers in a recent article titled, “Nearly 1,000 People Move From Blue States to Red States Every Day. Here’s Why.” His numbers include the following:

  • According to new Census data, the top seven states that recently had the biggest percentage increase in in-migration from other states were, in order: North Dakota, Nevada, South Carolina, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, and Texas.
  • All of these states are considered “red states” that lean conservatively politically, except Colorado, which is considered purple, somewhere between red conservative and blue liberal.
  • The seven states with the highest exodus of citizens in percentage terms were: Alaska, New York, Illinois, Connecticut, New Mexico, New Jersey, and Kansas. Five of these states are blue, except Alaska and Kansas.
  • The latest Rich States, Poor States document published by ALEC, the state legislative organization, estimates that nearly 1,000 people each day on net are leaving blue states and entering red states.
  • Nine states have no state income tax at present and those states are creating jobs at twice the pace of states that have a relatively high income tax rate.
  • According to IRS data from 2013, in that year Florida gained $8.2 billion in adjusted gross income from out-of-staters.
  • That same IRS analysis showed that Texas gained $5.9 billion in only one year.
  • Five of the seven states with the biggest gains in income have no income tax at all: Florida, Texas, Arizona, Washington, and Nevada.
  • Conversely, New York, a state with high state income tax rates, was again the big loser in 2013, with another New York 112,236 tax filers leaving and taking $5.2 billion with them.
  • Illinois lost nearly 67,000 tax filers and $3.7 billion of income it can no longer tax.
  • In 2013, 1.4 million more citizens left California than moved into the state, killing the theory of some that Americans are moving to red states for the weather rather than for economic reasons. In the same vein it does explain why colder than hell North Dakota is seeing a healthy percentage increase in migration into that state.
As always, the numbers do not lie. Human beings want to be free, they want to keep their hard earned dollars and to do so they are willing to uproot themselves from where they live now to take advantage of better economic conditions elsewhere. In his book “How Money Walks,” Travis Brown showed this to be true when he theorized that the two main factors driving this migration are: 1) whether a state has a right to work law (half of the states do) and 2) how high the top income tax rate is in the state. Nine states have no income tax today, and they are creating twice the pace of jobs as are high-income tax states.

Stephen Moore summed it up nicely in his article: “I’ve never met a Democrat who could come up with even a semi-plausible explanation for why families and businesses are hightailing it out of blue states. They are leaving states with high minimum wages, pro-union work rules, high taxes on the rich, generous welfare benefits, expansive regulations to “help” workers, green energy policies, etc. People are voting with their feet against these liberal policies.”

The numbers do not lie.

2) According to a Suffolk University/USA Today survey that was done back in late June, 2015, 70% of respondents said they do not want the federal government imposing a ban on the sale or manufacture of the Confederate flag. Contrast this with the temper tantrums and pontificating some liberals were ranting about back then when a young white adult shot up a black church in Charleston, South Carolina. Certainly a horrific event but the flag did not kill anyone, a deranged young adult did.

But that did not stop some politicians from trying to make points and a name for themselves by calling for a ban on the sale and displaying of the Confederate flag, something that 70% of Americans were against. Another numerical example of politicians being out of step with what America wants.

3) Lets go back to gun control, a favorite political topic of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. According to them, they know best when it comes to guns and they want to protect us from guns by shredding the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms.

But as we have often shown this past week, the numbers and reality between what politicians want to do to us and how we feel are diametrically opposed. According to a recent Gallup poll:
  • A record high percentage (63%) of Americans say guns make homes safer.
  • The number of Americans having a gun at home is up slightly over the past two years.
  • Only 30% of those polled said having a gun in the home makes it less safe, less than half that say having a gun in the home makes it safer.
  • Those feeling that having a gun in the home makes it safer has been trending upwards over time, from only 35% in 2000 to 63% in 2014.
  • From 2006 to 2014, the number has risen from 47% in 2006 to 63% in 2014.
Another example of where today's politicians are so out of step with the wishes and feelings of the majority of Americans.4) And the last set of numbers for this update to our “by the numbers” discussion. Most of the country probably thought and hope that the election of the first African-American President would help bring the races together and help eliminate racism in the country. But, alas, hoping that any good ever comes out of the American political class is usually a fruitless endeavor and the election of Obama and the reduction in racial tensions is no exception.Consider a recent Rasmussen poll on the topic of race relations and the election of Obama:
- A mere 20% of likely voters polled by Rasmussen feel that Obama has brought Americans of different races closer together.

- More than double feel that he has driven the races further apart.
27% say his election has had no difference on race relations.

- On a racial breakdown, 44% of African-Americans feel he has brought the races closer together but only 16% of whites and 21% of other races agree that he has brought the races closer together.

- In the same survey, a strong majority of those polled, 58%, feel that there is a war on police in this country today with 66% saying that comments that criticize police officers by politicians make it more dangerous for police officers to do their jobs.

- 70% of those polled say that politicians only discuss race to get elected and not to resolve racial issues.

So much hope and so much disappointment, according to Rasmussen’s numbers. Just another fail on the part of the Obama administration. That will do it for this month’s discussion on the topic, “by the numbers.” As we have emphasized this month, it is always critical to look at the reality of the numbers in our world because we cannot rely on politicians to tell us what is really going on, they have their own agendas and the agendas of the political cronies to protect. The numbers do not lie, our politicians do.

United States Of Purple

In the September 19, 2009 issue of The Week magazine (www.theweek.com), William Falk did a great tongue-in-cheek article about how to solve the acrimonious and bitter state of political debate in this country. He facetiously proposes to divide the country into the two countries, one with the "red" states and one with the "blue" states. In the red state nation:
  • The Federal income tax rate would by reduced to 10%.
  • Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security would be abolished.
  • Abortion would be illegal.
  • Gays would be closeted again.
  • Christianity would be the official state religion.
  • Anyone could be any kind of gun with no questions asked.
In the blue state nation:
  • The Federal income tax rate would be raised to 90%.
  • All employers would institute quotas for minorities, women, and less-abled persons.
  • You would get all of your health care needs handled by a single government run. organization like in Canada.
  • Fast food would be banned.
  • Gun ownership would be banned.
  • Gay marriage would be legal.
  • Marijuana would be legal.

While I applaud Mr. Falk's originality, I would suggest that he left out another segment, call it the purple states. In the purple state nation:

  • I would be free to keep much more of my wealth since the government was efficient and non-wasteful, providing only essential services without any pork barrel projects at all.
  • I would be free to participate, or not participate, in cost effective and efficient government retirement plans.
  • I would be free to do whatever I wanted to my body from a pregnancy (if I was a woman), fast food, and drug perspective.
  • I would be free to practice whatever sexual orientation I wanted without threat of retribution or ridicule.
  • I would be free to practice whatever religion I wanted without threat of retribution or ridicule.
  • I would be free to own whatever type of gun I wanted, assuming I was a law abiding citizen.
  • I would be free to hire whomever I wanted for as long as I wanted without interference from an overreaching government bureaucracy.
  • I would be free to choose health care options which were market driven and priced and which excluded any overreaching government interference and bureaucracy.
  • I would be free of petty, ignorant, and arrogant politicians who divide citizens into warring tribes.
  • I would be free of petty, ignorant, and arrogant politicians who do not understand what the word "respect" means, and thus, do not apply that definition to all citizens including those that differ in their opinions.
  • I would be free of petty, ignorant, and arrogant politicians because they are restricted to term limits less than the current Presidential term limits.
  • I would be free of petty, ignorant, and arrogant politicians who have no idea how damaging their economic policies are to both the economy and to freedom.
  • I would be free of an election system that allows ungodly amounts of money from corporations, unions, PACs and lobbyists to render the ordinary citizen's voice almost moot.
  • I would be free of a government who thinks being a Patriot involves almost unfettered access to every citizen's private life without any checks and balances.
  • I would be free of an inept government and political class that has not solved any significant problem in over forty years including the war on drugs, failing public schools, foreign energy source dependency, war on terror, etc.
  • I would be free of an inept government and political class who think foreign policy involves stationing combat troops in over 150 countries worldwide.
  • I would be free to live my life, raise my family, and spend my wealth anyway I wanted with minimal interference from the political class.

This is the nation I want to live in. I understand it existed once. It was called the United States of America.
