Bonus Post -Update To Obama's Christmas Tree Tax Program

Yesterday we reported on a new bit of the latest insanity from the Federal government and the Federal political class, a $.15 tax on the sale and import of live Christmas trees for this holiday season. The myriad of reasons why this was a stupid idea and another example of government out of control is in yesterday's post.

However, news reports today are reporting that the administration has at least temporarily rescinded the program and tax for review. Apparently, the uproar and embarrassment that arose in just a day or so was even too much for this administration to ignore. Thankfully, this inane program has been put on hold and hopefully, eventually put to death.

However, I found an interesting piece of news today regarding the program from the Heritage Foundation. They reported in their blog today that the live Christmas tree industry had tried to do this program three times on their own without government help. Each time it failed because the industry could not get enough of its own growers and importers to support it.

Now, after three tries a rational person would likely think that this is a bad idea and drop it. However, some within the industry, against the wishes of most within the industry, decided to get the Federal government involved for a fourth try. By involving the Federal government and having the Federal government impose a Federal tax on everyone in the industry, what was originally an optional (three times),  freedom of choice decision to not participate in the program now would have become a Federal crime NOT to participate in the program.

In other words, freedom of choice of the majority of people within the industry was negated by the minority who leveraged the tyranny of the Federal government to criminalize freedom of choice. Fortunately, additional political class tyranny was derailed, freedom of choice maintained, and the insanity stopped in its tracks.

A good day for freedom in America. Even if it was a small win, a win is still a win, especially when fighting the tyranny of the political class.
