Part 2, Freedom and Liberty Guest Speaker Week, Steve Foley: The Obama Care Train Wreck

This is a second in a series of guest posts from other Americans who also are fearing for our freedom, liberty, and democracy. Yesterday, we proved that a couple of dozen random thoughts from Mr. Thomas Sowell were more sightful and useful than ten years worth of thoughts from every politician who served in Congress or the White House over those ten years.

Today’s words of wisdom come from a Mr. Steve Foley who wrote and published the article, “Debt Flicks: True Lies,” on June 27, 2013 for the Minority Report blog. Mr. Foley’s article is not so much his writings and thoughts but a comprehensive compilation of points and counterpoints of different people relative to the impending Obama Care disaster. He cites quotes from Obama administration officials on how and why Obama Care will be so great and counters those overly rosy opinions with the views and quotes of experts who disagree.

The original web posting with his article can be accessed directly at the following site which contains the back up links which prove his points, namely that Obama Care will fail to meet all of its major objectives, regardless of what Obama officials tell us:

The general format is that each Obama Care promise is listed first in each section and then expert opinions are listed immediately afterwards to factually debunk the administration’s false claims:

Today it’s being reported that HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius’ main message in the implementation of Obamacare is “countering false notions” about the law. It makes you wonder where these “false notions” are coming from. Seriously, who’s spreading this stuff? They should stop.

“[L]awmakers Said That Sebelius’s Main Message Was The Importance Of Countering False Notions About The Law That Are Prevailing Around The Country …”: (Paige Winfield Cunningham and Jennifer Haberkorn, “Dems to Sebelius: Seniors Confused on Obamacare,” POLITICO, 6/27/13)

“FABULOUS” OR A “TRAIN WRECK”?

Notion: Obamacare Implementation Going “Fabulous”:

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Cali.) Calls The Implementation Of Obamacare “Fabulous.”: “’The implementation of this [Obamacare] is fabulous,’ Pelosi said. ‘As we observe the Fourth of July, our founders talked about the Declaration of Independence guaranteeing life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — that is what this is all about.’” (Paige Winfield Cunningham and Jennifer Haberkorn, “Dems to Sebelius: Seniors Confused on Obamacare,” POLITICO, 6/27/13)

Facts Point To More Of A Train Wreck:

Sen. Baucus (D-MT) Warns Of Impending ‘Train Wreck.’: “Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) said Wednesday he fears a ‘train wreck’ as the Obama administration implements its signature healthcare law…. ‘I just see a huge train wreck coming down,’ he told Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at a Wednesday hearing. ‘You and I have discussed this many times, and I don’t see any results yet.’” (Sam Baker, “Baucus warns of ‘huge train wreck’ enacting ObamaCare provisions,” The Hill, 4/17/13)

Obama Warns Of “Glitches” And “Bumps” In New Health Care Law: “Even if we do everything perfectly, there will still be glitches and bumps,’ Mr. Obama told reporters Tuesday. (Louise Radnofsky, “Obama Sees ‘Bumps’ for Health Law,” The Wall Street Journal, 5/1/13)

Obamacare “Might Not Be Ready For Prime Time.”: ”President Obama’s signature healthcare law might not be ready for prime time when people begin signing up for the new insurance exchanges on Oct. 1, according to a new government report.” (Elise Viebeck, “GAO: Obamacare launch in doubt,” The Hill, 6/19/13)

Failure To Establish Exchanges Could “Throw A Wrench” Into Obamacare Rollout: “Federal health officials are taking the lead in 34 states that have refused to mount their own exchanges because of opposition to ObamaCare. This outcome was not anticipated by authors of the Affordable Care Act and could throw a wrench in the law’s rollout, the nonpartisan investigators said.” (Elise Viebeck, “GAO: Obamacare launch in doubt,” The Hill, 6/19/13)

Administration Will Need $1.5 Billion In Additional Funds For Exchanges: “The GAO cited many factors that raise questions about the law’s readiness. The federal data hub that will power the exchanges has not been extensively tested, and the administration will need $1.5 billion in additional funds from Congress to operate the exchanges next year.” (Elise Viebeck, “GAO: Obamacare launch in doubt,” The Hill, 6/19/13)

WSJ: “Auditors Say HHS Isn’t Close To Being Ready To Launch In October”: “On Wednesday the auditors at the Government Accountability Office released the results of two investigations and optimistically conclude that it ‘cannot yet be determined’ if ObamaCare will be ready for enrollment a mere four months from now. The GAO’s detailed portrait of blown deadlines, regulatory improvisation and general chaos explains why HHS has been anti-transparent. … The 16 states running their own exchanges have between 16 and 52 key activities still undone, or about 85% on average of the total workload based on how demanding the activities are. The data show that the share of the states’ key activities that are off-schedule range from 17% to as much as 75%.” (Editorial, “Obamacare Trail Of Tears,” The Wall Street Journal, 6/19/13)

QUALITY CARE OR DOCTOR SHORTAGES?

Notion: ACA Will Increase Access To Quality Care:

President Obama: ACA Will Increase Access To Quality Care: “Quality care is not something that should be a privilege, it should be a right. In the greatest country on Earth, we’ve got to make sure that every single person that needs health care can get it. And we’ve got to make sure that we do it in the most efficient way possible.” (President Obama, “Remarks on Health Care and Surveillance,” The New York Times, 6/7/13)

But Doctor Shortages Could Lead To A Backlog Of Patients And A Lesser Quality Of Care: Associated Press: “Doctor Shortage Predicted Under Obamacare.” (Ann Sanner, “Doctor shortage predicted under Obamacare,” Associated Press, 6/19/13)

Implementation Of Obamacare Could Lead To Shortage Of Doctors, Backlog of Patients: “A shortage of primary care physicians in some parts of the country is expected to worsen as millions of newly insured Americans gain coverage under the federal health care law next year. Doctors could face a backlog, and patients could find it difficult to get quick appointments. … The problem will become more acute nationally when about 30 million uninsured people eventually gain coverage under the Affordable Care Act, which takes full effect next year.” (Ann Sanner, “Doctor shortage predicted under Obamacare,” Associated Press, 6/19/13)

Nearly One In Five Already Facing Shortage Of Primary Care Physicians: “Nearly one in five Americans already lives in a region designated as having a shortage of primary care physicians, and the number of doctors entering the field isn’t expected keep pace with demand. About a quarter million primary care doctors work in America now, and the Association of American Medical Colleges projects the shortage will reach almost 30,000 in two years and will grow to about 66,000 in little more than a decade.” (Ann Sanner, “Doctor shortage predicted under Obamacare,” Associated Press, 6/19/13)

Safety Questioned: “Could Create A Two-Tier Health System Offering Unequal Treatment.”: “Lobbying groups representing doctors have questioned the safety of some of the proposed changes, argued they would encourage less collaboration among health professionals and suggested they could create a two-tiered health system offering unequal treatment.” (Ann Sanner, “Doctor shortage predicted under Obamacare,” Associated Press, 6/19/13)

LOWER COSTS OR RATE INCREASES?

Notion: Obamacare Will Lower Costs

HSS Secretary Sebelius Says Obamacare Will Lower Costs: “‘It’s a demonstration of what the president has said all along — that you can decrease costs while improving care,’ Sebelius said, adding that both the Congressional Budget Office and independent actuary reports have shown that. ‘It’s very clear that some of the statutes in the Affordable Care Act are helping in lowering costs in overall health spending.’” (“Sebelius: GOP Governors Will Eventually Expand Medicaid,” USA Today, 3/21/13)

But Sebelius Also Admitted That Premiums Are Going To Increase: HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Warns Premiums Would Most Likely Rise. “Insurance premiums could rise for some with individual plans, she [HHS Secretary Sebelius] said … ‘These folks will be moving into a really fully insured product for the first time, so there may be a higher cost associated with getting into that market,’ Sebelius said.” (Jeff Mason & David Morgan, “Kathleen Sebelius: Obamacare Implementation May Cause Some Health Care Costs To Rise,” The Huffington Post, 3/26/13)

IF YOU LIKE YOUR PLAN, YOU CAN KEEP IT?

Notion: If You Like Your Plan, You Can Keep It.

President Obama: “Under The Reforms We Seek, If You Like Your Doctor, You Can Keep Your Doctor: If You Like Your Health Care Plan, You Can Keep Your Health Care Plan.” (President Obama, Weekly Address, The White House, 8/8/09)

You Might Be Losing Your Plan: Associated Press: “Like Your Health Care Policy? You May Be Losing It.” “The goal is to cover most of the nation’s nearly 50 million uninsured, but even Obama says there will be bumps in the road. And discontinued insurance plans could be another bump. Also, it doesn’t seem to square with one of the president’s best known promises about his health care overhaul: ‘If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan.’” (Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, “Like Your Health Care Policy? You May Be Losing It,” Associated Press, 5/29/13)

Not surprising: Americans are losing trust: Half Of All Americans Say They Don’t Understand How It Will Affect Them. “A separate tracking survey conducted by Kaiser, which has done far more surveys on health care than any other polling organization, found that roughly half of American adults said they did not have enough information about the law to understand how it will affect them.” (Micah Coehn, “Uncertainty Still Clouds Health Care Law,” The New York Times, 5/1/13)

More View Law Negatively Than Positively (Same As When It Passed): “Among those who do have an opinion, more people still regard the health care law negatively than positively, according to a series of recent polls. In fact, the law’s net approval numbers stand basically where they did when it was passed.” (Micah Coehn, “Uncertainty Still Clouds Health Care Law,” The New York Times, 5/1/13)

***************************************

Nice work by Mr. Foley putting it all together for us in a neat package, what the political class claims is going to happen and what the press and experts are reporting will be far more likely to happen. Senator Baucus said it best when he called it a train wreck.
