May,2018, Part, The Unfolding Disaster That Is Obama Care: A Broken Mediciad System, Higher Costs and Lower Quality, and Trump's Simple Yet Elegant Solution

Every month for years now we have had to discuss how bad Obama Care is turning out to be under the continuing theme, “the unfolding disaster that is Obama Care.” This month is no different. As the legislation continues to march through America, driving up health care and health insurance prices as it serves as dead weight on economic growth, it cements its rightful place as the worst piece of legislation Washington has ever produced.

It never had a chance to be successful since it really never addressed the underlying root causes of our ever increasing health costs in the country:
  • Americans eat too much of the wrong kind of food, resulting in obscenely high obesity rates for the country.
  • Our food chain is infested with overdoses of high fructose corn syrup, salt, sugar, and other unhealthy additives.
  • Americans smoke too much.
  • Americans do not exercise enough.
  • The country is in serious need of health care tort reform.
  • Barriers to insurance company competition across state lines need to come down.
  • Obama Care never “followed the money” to find out who is actually profiting from the ever escalating healthcare costs in this country and how to get those factors under control.
  • Obama Care never got the immense amount of fraud and abuse in current government healthcare programs, Medicare and Medicaid, under control in order to save money to efficiently fund other government health care initiatives.
  • Obama Care never put serious research money towards curing the major diseases that drive high healthcare costs such as high frequency cancers and dementia type diseases.
You cannot resolve any problem unless you understand and address the underlying root causes. No difference here: Obama Care legislation never addressed these listed root causes and thus, has no chance of ever being successful.

But it is not just missing the root causes of our healthcare costs that makes Obama Care so horrible. It resulted in millions of Americans losing access to their favored doctors, hospitals, and insurance policies. It has caused insurance premiums, deductibles and copays to escalate substantially. It will likely add trillions of dollars to the national debt. It has exposed millions of Americans to higher than necessary identity theft chances. It has created government bureaucracies that are wastefully spending taxpayer wealth and being exploited by criminal elements. It has stifled economic growth and job creation.

These are just a sample of the types of idiocy that we have been reviewing for the past several years in this blog relative to Obama Care., To read those past posts, just enter the phrase, “the unfolding disaster,” in the search box above.

1) In our last Obama Care disaster post, we discussed the reality of ow Obama Care has led to the destruction and heartbreak of the Medicaid program. By overwhelming the Medicaid program with able bodied Obama Care patients, perhaps upwards of 21,000 American Medicaid patients died as they waited on Medicaid waiting lists to get the health care they desperately needed. Thus, a program (Obama Care) that was supposed t5o make Americans healthier actually hastened the death of at least some folks.

But a National Review article recently listed out the ways that Medicaid could be fixed to actually serve those it was originally designed for (the disabled, the blind, the elderly poor, etc.) and not be a dumping ground for Obama Care abled-bodied adults:
  • States that expanded Medicaid under Obama Care should stop wasting limited resources on able bodied adults coming into the program under Obama Care.
  • Current enrollees would be able to stay on Medicaid but would be rolled off once their incomes rise enough to exceed Medicaid’s income thresholds, freeing up more resources for the truly needy.
  • One way of stopping new states from expanding Medicaid to able bodied adults would be to eliminate the funding that these additionally able bodied adults would get from the Federal taxpayer, i.e. if a state wanted to expand Medicaid then that state and its taxpayers would pick up the entire tab.
  • Medicaid rules should be changed to force able bodied adults currently on Medicaid to get a job to reduce the government’s cost of Medicaid for these able bodied adults.
  • Anti-fraud efforts should be stepped up to recover and prevent the billions of Medicaid dollars lost every year to fraud and criminal activity within the program.
  • For example, a recent inspector general report found that Federal taxpayers spent definitely more than $628 million on about 366,000 ineligible Medicaid recipients just in California alone and just in California’s Obama Care expansion alone.
  • Imagine how much more waste goes on across the country if $628 million exists solely in a fraction of California’s Medicaid population.
  • But the California situation is likely worse since that same report found that another 70.055 California Obama Care expansion Medicaid patients were “potentially ineligible” which could cost taxpayers upwards of another $402 million, meaning that a billion dollars in waste in just a subset of California Medicaid patients.
  • Maybe some of that wasted billion dollars could have saved the 384 California Medicaid patients that died while on the waiting list for medical care in that state.
What a mess that can be fixed but which Obama and Obama Care never cared about fixing. It is like they took a broken down, 50 year old pick up truck that was designed to two two tons and decided it could tow 4 tons without any new enhancements to it. As a result, the program wastes more taxpayer money than ever, it provides a low level of medical care, and it has helped kill upwards of 21,000 Americans. Truly an unfolding disaster.

2) David Thornton, writing for the Maven website recently explained how as we get closer and closer to the 2019 Obama Care sign up season, costs for Obama Care policies, as they do every year, are going to jump up again in cost:
  • The state of Maryland is one of the first states that has proposed new insurance rates for 2019 available and those rates for Obama Care like individual insurance policies are seeing an average rate increase request from insurance companies of a whopping 32%.
  • The proposed increases for the state range from 18% to 91%.
  • And as always, insurance policy customers, both Obama Care policies, and employer policies, will show higher deductibles and co-pays going forward into 2019 despite the many promises Obama made about Obama Care “bending the cost curve” or a typical American family saving upwards of $2,500 a year on their insurance costs.
  • This last point was highlighted by a real life example of the writer: “There are also hidden limitations that you only find out about when you have a claim. As an example, my wife had to go to the hospital in an ambulance last year. Six months after her hospital stay, we received a bill from the ambulance service asking us to pay more than $4,000 for a 30-minute ride. When I followed up with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, our insurance company, I was told that the ambulance service was out-of-network. When I pressed further, I found that Blue Cross did not have any ambulance providers in their network in the entire state of Texas. As a result, Blue Cross paid less than $1,000 on a total claim of more than $5,000.”
Higher costs, lower quality, the hallmarks of Obama Care.

3) Let’s finish up with a good news/bad news Obama Care situation:
  • According to a recent Breitbart article by Rhona White, a recent study from Avalere Health estimated that 3.2 million Americans will drop their Obama Care policies in the coming years.
  • This is good news because of an executive order Donald Trump signed that made it easier for people to get better and less expensive health insurance coverage from so-called Association Health Plans (AHP).
  • An AHP is a health insurance plan that is sponsored and populated by people in an industry, trade, or professional association that pools their buying power to negotiate and get better health insurance costs from insurance companies.
  • According to Dan Mendelson, president of Avalere Health, “Consumers are always looking for a new low-cost health insurance option but migration of healthy people to a new product will ultimately take a toll on what is presently being sold in the market.”
  • The Avalere study estimates that those that drop Obama Care policies and join an AHP insurance poll will save about $9,700 a year on average vs. a policy they could get in the private insurance market.\
  • So the good news is that millions of Americans will save thousands and thousands of dollars a year in insurance costs. The bad news, according to Chris Sloan, senior manager at Avalere, “The proposed rule would lead to millions of individuals and small businesses shifting into a new form of coverage, likely reducing their premiums, but leading to higher premiums in the markets they leave behind.”
That means that there will be fewer and fewer Obama Care policy holders which will put pressure on the insurance companies to raise rates over as smaller and likely less healthy base which will drive more people out of Obama Care policies which will cause the insurance companies to raise rates….and the Obama Care death spiral continues.

All of which raises a good point: why didn’t Obama just do this eight years ago, allowing people to more easily join an AHP? It may have allowed millions and millions of Americans to get lower cost health insurance many years ago without all of the hassles, bureaucracy, and failures of Obama Care? Another example where government and politicians’ “solutions” made a bad situation worse.

That will do it for the unfolding disasters of Obama Care for this month: a Medicaid system in much need of reform, higher healthcare costs and lower quality, and a simple solution that Obama Care completely missed. More next month as the disasters keep on coming.

To Build A Wall Or Not To Build A Wall? Part 2

One of the big issues of this Presidential campaign is whether or not to tighten up security on the Mexican border with Trump wanting to build a wall to prevent illegal immigration and other nefarious activities on the border. Somehow, someway, some people, mostly liberals and Democrats, think that having security on the border is a bad, racist thing to have.

Let’s take a look at what is going on down on the border and then we can decide who is right relative to the need for a secure border, Trump or the Democrats. Today will be Part Two of our discussion on the wall, a discussion that started with the following post from yesterday:

XXXXXX

1) Back in May, the Boston Herald reported on a violent crime from March 13, 2016 when four illegal immigrants assaulted an American man and his girlfriend. Three men grabbed the woman and dragged her away where they repeatedly raped her. One of the illegal immigrants stayed behind to beat up the woman’s boyfriend.

The boyfriend eventually got free of the one beating him and attacked the group raping his girlfriend, eventually having to defend himself from a knife attack: “I thought we were going to die. I really did,” the boyfriend stated. “And I didn’t care if I died as long as I could save her and get her out of there, that’s all I cared about.

The sad part of this whole violent crime was that the four attackers had already been deported for previously having committed crimes in this country. But they managed to illegally re-enter the country to commit these heinous deeds in Framingham, Massachusetts.

And as a result, at least two Americans are likely traumatized for a long time into their future: “I’ve lived (in Framingham, Massachusetts) my whole life and I never imagined anything like this could happen just walking down the street,” stated the boyfriend. “The worst part was I felt like I couldn’t do anything.”

2) But it is not just American citizens walking down their city’s streets that are being attacked. According to a report by Brittany Hughes of the MRCTV website, 140 cases of assault against U.S. custom agents have occurred in just a recent three month period. This data was published by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency of the Federal government.

There have been 421 attacks so far in fiscal year 2016 which still has a couple of months left to go. This is a 17% increase over the same time frame in fiscal year 2015. The vast majority of these attacks have been directed at U.S.Border agents, the ones trying to make our borders less porous and more secure.

3) This past Fathers’ Day, Breitbart carried a very sad story on its website that chronicled the deaths of some Americans at the hands of illegal immigrants. The focus of the article was the families of those killed by illegal immigrants and their ire directed at House Speaker Paul Ryan, calling for his resignation for his stance and policies on illegal immigration.

Dan Golvach, whose 25 year old son, Spencer, was murdered by an illegal immigrant by a gunshot to the head while stopped at a red light: “I would invite Speaker Ryan to forsake spending Father’s Day with his kids to come down here to Houston and visit the place I will spend every Father’s Day for the rest of my life— my American son’s grave. This way Speaker Ryan can see first hand what pandering to the cheap illegal labor lobby means to Americans who can’t afford to put a security fence up around their house. The best thing Ryan could do to protect his family from what my family is experiencing is resign today. His policies are not only treasonous to us, they are also treasonous to any American that ever happens to be sitting at a red light like Spencer was. This wasn’t Syria or Iraq. It was the neighborhood I grew up in. Do your kids ever sit at red lights, Mr. Speaker?”

Billy Inman’s, whose 16 year old son was murdered by another illegal immigrant, stated in the article that it was a disgrace for Congressman Ryan to suggest he might sue Donald Trump if Trump was President relative to the suggestion that Trump might use executive authority to pause Muslim immigration: “He’s [Ryan] more upset with Trump than he is about what happened to our families. If Ryan sues Trump on the Muslim ban, we could sue him and most of our elected officials for not stopping illegal aliens from crossing the southern border.”

Inman’s son was killed when the car he was driving in was rear ended by an illegal immigrant driving over 60 miles per hour. This happened as the family was on their way to celebrate Fathers’ Day with a fishing trip. Inman and his wife were both knocked as a result of the accident, were put into intentional comas for several weeks for their own good and were unable to even attend their son’s funeral.

Obviously, if the Federal government was doing their job that illegal immigrant would not have been in the country and would have not caused the death and trauma to this innocent American family: “I’d like for Ryan to try wearing my shoes for a week. I don’t think he’d make it a day,” Inman said in the article relative to the pain and sorrow he and his wife go through daily.

George Wilkerson’s 18 year old son, Joshua, was tied up, beaten, set on fire, and tortured to death by an illegal immigrant while he was on his way home from school: “Ryan is just one of Obama’s puppets. I don’t consider him a Republican. His tone is totally against Americans as far as I’m concerned. He’s been paid by the taxpayers, but he hasn’t done anything for them. He’s been there for two decades. He’s not doing his job. He’s not looking out for Americans. He’s doing more for foreign citizens than he is for his own American citizens."

Rapes of Americans, assaults on Americans, attacks on Border agents, and the unnecessary loss of life of American citizens because of the Federal government’s inability to protect us and enforce common sense and the current immigration laws. As we concluded yesterday, we also conclude today that maybe that wall might not be a bad idea after all, if one cares about the safety and lives of Americans.

June, 2016, Bonus Post, The Unfolding Disaster That Is Obama Care: Costs Keeping On Going Up

  • Our food chain is infested with overdoses of high fructose corn syrup, salt, and other unhealthy additives.

It has caused insurance premiums, deductibles and co-pays to escalate substantially.

I thought we would be done with this month’s Obama Care disasters yesterday but a few more things popped up so let’s finish them off today:

1) We have often pointed out how people that have Obama Care health insurance policies are always being faced with higher and higher premiums and deductibles but are receiving less and less quality and choice in their medical care needs. This reality is occurring even though the President promised any number of times that the cost of health insurance would go down up to $2,500 a year for American families.

This continually rising cost of Obama Care insurance was again documented and researched in a recent Breitbart article by Warner Todd Huston on June 15, 2016:

  • The title of his article was, “Obamacare Insurance Premiums Set To Skyrocket Yet Again.”
  • An analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that some of the most popular Obama Care policies, “silver plans,” will see an increase of up 11% in 2017.
  • 68% of all Obama Care insurance policies are silver plans.
  • The reason for the continued price increases is simple: insurance companies found that they had underestimated the costs associated with Obama Care policies from the start.
  • The companies found that silver customers tended to be sicker and more expensive to care for than what was expected and other types of non-Obama Care policies.
  • The legislation requires the insurance companies to accept any and all applicants including those with pre-existing conditions which by simple logic, is gong to make them expensive customers to service.
  • In addition, as the backup funding mechanisms are stopping, the financial support promised in the legislation has expired, placing more financial stress on the companies.
  • Sabrina Corlette is a professor at Georgetown University’s Center on Health Insurance Reforms: “There are absolutely some carriers that are going to have to come in with some pretty significant price hikes to make up for the underpricing that they did before.”
  • In April, Larry Levitt, an expert on Obama’s signature healthcare law at the Kaiser Family Foundation, noted, “The industry is clearly setting the stage for bigger premium increases in 2017.”
High costs, higher premiums. The exact opposite of what Obama promised.

2) The Breitbart article referenced above also had a montage of Obama claiming an amazing 23 times that if you liked your current health insurance policy and current doctors, you could keep them under Obama Care. Since upwards of 7 million American lost access to their current insurance policies as a result of Obama Care and millions lost access to their current, preferred doctors, these 23 lies from the President must be especially painful to hear. The video is embedded in the following Breitbart article:

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/06/15/obamacare-insurance-premiums-set-skyrocket-again/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social

3) Doug McKelway, writing for Fox News on April 18, 2016, also checked in on how insurance policy rates in the Obama Care world went up as 2016 was unfolding and why:

  • The study found that the Blue Cross Obama Care policyholders had higher rates of disease than those who had enrolled in Blue Cross policies before Obama Care went into effect.
  • This has driven up the costs of Blue Cross insurers to service their Obama Care policyholders.
  • The study was based on a large review of actual medical claims.
  • Obama Care holders of Blue Cross policies had higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, depression, coronary artery disease, HIV, and Hepatitis C than previous Blue Cross customers.
  • These Obama Care policy holders also had more frequent inpatient admissions, outpatient visits, prescriptions filled and more emergency room visits.
  • This previous item, increased emergency room visits, is significant since Obama constantly promised that emergency room visits would go DOWN, not up, if this legislation was passed.
  • This resulted in these Obama Care customers needing significantly more medical care which was 19% higher on average in 2014 and 22% higher in 2015.
Now, I am not a heartless bastard, these Americans obviously needed medical care and in many cases they are now getting that medical care. I would not wish the unavailability of medical care for anyone in need of it. But these results show that the Obama Care promises of “bending the cost curve,” reducing costs, saving Americans upwards of $2,500 a year on insurance premiums, etc. are now just cruel deceptions of the American public.

These stories just prove our theory, as discussed above, Obama Care never addressed the root causes of our country’s high and growing health care costs. And if you do not address the underlying root causes, just providing high priced insurance coverage to the country does nothing about reducing healthcare costs, it just rearranges the those costs within the overall health care system

4) An analysis from the Freedom Partners website earlier this year summarized the premium cost increases of the individual Obama Care insurance policy market coming into 2016. Many of those premium increases expected in 2016 were double digit increases over 2015. They compiled their results in the following table:

These stories and the double digit increases in costs for Obama Care policies prove again that Obama Care is doing the exact opposite of what it was promised to do. It is raising premiums, not lowering them. It is raising deductibles, not lowering them. It is making health insurance more costly, not reducing the costs as Obama promised. It is not making the country healthier which would reduce costs while improving the health of America.

It is an unfolding disaster which we will continue to track in subsequent months since if anything is consistent about Obama Care it is that it will continue to be a disaster for America and Americans.
