October, 2026, Political Class Insanity, Part 2: West Coast Political Stupidity From Oregon to Los Angeles To Seattle

For  many, many years we have written about the ineptness, ignorance, and inability of the American political class to efficiently and effectively manage out tax dollars  and resolve the problems facing the  county. They never learn from  past mistakes and continue to  just make stupid decisions. Today’s political  class  insanity discussion just reinforces their historical incompetence.

1)Government intervention in the  medical care/health  care industry around the world and through  history has rarely ended  well:

  • Nationalized health care in England, Canada, and elsewhere has shown that health care quality deteriorates while the cost for government care management rises and rises when politicians get involved.

  • Obama Care promised to get every American on an affordable health insurance  plan  and “bend  the cost curve” of health  care while in  reality over 25 million Americans still don't have health insurance coverage and the Obama Car insurance policies failed to bend any curve.

  • The Federal government  has already tried to manage the  nation's health via Medicare and Medicaid, two programs  that are rocketing towards bankruptcy and as we have discussed extensively in our  government fraud posts, both programs are infested with fraud that steals billions and billions of  taxpayer wealth every year.

  • Vermont, one of the most liberal states in the country, tried to implement a  total state based government healthcare process over 12 years ago and had to give up before  even starting its implementation  since they could not find  any way to  fund it without going bankrupt.

  • Oregon voters voted against a universal  care strategy and plan at the  state level in 2002 with only about 20% voting in favor.

So history has shown that government controlled/politician-controlled healthcare management  has rarely, if ever, delivered better health care in an economical manner. And yet, that has not stopped the  politicians out in Oregon to  try and do what has never been successfully and efficiently accomplished before:

  • Oregon politicians want to take total control of healthcare over every Oregon resident by taking over Medicare and Medicaid control, Obama Care, and private insurance programs in the state.

  • The state politicians created the so-called Universal Health Plan Governance Board in 2023.

  • The purpose of  the  Board was to design  a publicly funded, government  controlled health  care system for  every resident, a “publicly funded health plan covering everyone who lives in Oregon.”

  • “Publicly funded” are code words for taxpayer funded.

  •  The original plan  was to develop the plan  and roll it out starting in 2028 and  complete the rollout by 2032.

  • However, the Board has delayed its final report  because those  serving on the  board cannot figure out how to pay for  the plan.

Such stupidity. Every resident in  Oregon likely has a unique health  care need. To think  that the state politicians can come up with a program that efficiently serves every resident and their unique  health  care needs is Soviet Union-like thinking, another example where government-control of health care failed  dramatically.

Dr. Delose Cosgrove is the former CEO of the Cleveland Clinic. I would bet that he has more health care and medical knowledge than every member of the Oregon state legislature combined. We previously discussed his belief  that smoking, diet, and lack of exercise contribute to  40% of premature deaths in this country, 70% of chronic diseases such as heart disease, and account for 75% of the nation's total health care.

He proved his point by implementing healthier food in the Clinic cafeteria and sponsoring  exercise and smoke cessation sessions. The  result was massive weight loss of Clinic employees and healthier employees and greatly reduced smoking levels. Politicians seem to always want to resolve public health  issues with economic solutions while the  best way to resolve public health issues is with public health solutions.

Advice to Oregon politicians via Einstein: the definition  of insanity is doing the same  thing over and over and  expecting different  results. Trying to implement government-controlled health  care is insanity, it has rarely if  ever  worked  before..

2)Speaking  of government incompetence, let’s head out to Los Angeles, a city that suffered through decimating wildfires a year ago:

  • A recent investigation  into the wildfires was recently  finished and released.

  • Findings  of  the report, over  700  pages  long, included the fact that fire-fighters were prematurely sent home despite the presence of high/dangerous winds, and evacuation  orders to residents did not go out until their homes were already on fire.

  • The  report  also concluded that the city fire department ignored warnings that a wildfire was still alive and smoldering and which  eventually reignited into a fury.

  • The report stated that firefighting efforts and communications were uncoordinated  and  disjointed.

Combine these findings with the reality that is already known  about firefighting infrastructure, ( e.g. dry hydrants, dry reservoirs, etc.)  and you see a massive failure of the local government  agencies and politicians, a failure that destroyed homes, businesses, lives, and trust.

A very basic duty of any government entity is to  protect the lives and property of the  citizens it serves. In the case of  the wildfires, Los Angeles politicians failed dramatically.

3)Obviously, American politicians do not know much  about affordable and available  healthcare or fire  fighting. But Seattle politicians show that politicians constantly show their economic ignorance:

  • We have recently and often discussed the reality that Seattle may actually be  the leading city candidate to go bankrupt first.

  • Violent crime, high taxes, high homelessness problem, and fleeing residents and businesses have  seriously  degraded the size of the city’s tax  base and revenue stream.

  • The fleeing tax base has created a severe crisis  in the city, with expected  city tax revenues facing a three year budget hole totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.

  • The  business  office vacancy rate is now the highest in the country with about 35% of the business space in the city now vacant.

Obviously, city politicians in Seattle have not managed the city economy efficiently  and effectively. And their recent decision is going to make  this  bad  situation  even worse:

  • According to reporting by the Western Journal, the city is raising the  minimum wage  to $22.14 on January 1st, up from the current level of $21.30.

  • That will give it one  of the highest minimum wage levels of any major  American city.

  • But this higher and higher rate  puts additional profitability strain especially on small businesses in the city, a  population  that has already been shrinking because of crime, a shrinking  customer  base, and already high taxes

  • These small business owners will likely reduce the number of  workers, reduce the number of hours of operation, take away other employee benefits, replace workers with  automation, and possibly leave the city altogether.

  • These options are not theoretical, we have  reported on similar economic insanity of raising the  minimum wage too quickly in  other cities and other states  with the  same  consequences.

An  old saying goes as  follows: “When stuck  in a hole, stop  digging.” Seattle  is stuck in a  financial crisis hole. Businesses are shutting down or moving their operations out of the  city for various reasons. Making it harder for a business to remain profitable and viable  should be the priority, not  increasing the major  expense item in its operation, labor.

All  of which leads to another saying; ”The good news  is  that  your  wages just went up. The bad news is you no  longer have a  job.” Which is exactly what will happen if history is any guideline: businesses  will  tighten up their  labor  expense line to  compensate for the higher minimum wage, resulting in fewer jobs, fewer employee benefits,  fewer hours,  and  use of  automation to  replace human  labor. Or they will abandon the  city,  further reducing a shrinking tax base. In either case, residents, employees, and the Seattle city income statement  suffer.

Enough insanity for today: Seattle  continues to commit economic suicide, Los Angeles politicians failed dramatically in  fire  protection, and Oregon politicians  want to  go somewhere where no one has been successful before, government controlled healthcare.

August, 2019, Part 8, The Unfolding Disaster That Is Obama Care: The Failure of Single Pay Health Care Systems Around the World, Continued

Every month for years now we have had to discuss how bad Obama Care is turning out to be under the continuing theme, “the unfolding disaster that is Obama Care.” This month is no different. As the legislation continues to march through America, driving up health care and health insurance prices as it serves as dead weight on economic growth, it cements its rightful place as the worst piece of legislation Washington has ever produced.

It never had a chance to be successful since it really never addressed the underlying root causes of our ever increasing health costs in the country:

  • Americans eat too much of the wrong kind of food, resulting in obscenely high obesity rates for the country.
  • Our food chain is infested with overdoses of high fructose corn syrup, salt, sugar, and other unhealthy additives.
  • Americans smoke too much.
  • Americans do not exercise enough.
  • The country is in serious need of health care tort reform.
  • Barriers to insurance company competition across state lines need to come down.
  • Obama Care never “followed the money” to find out who is actually profiting from the ever escalating healthcare costs in this country and how to get those factors under control.
  • Obama Care never got the immense amount of fraud and abuse in current government healthcare programs, Medicare and Medicaid, under control in order to save money to efficiently fund other government health care initiatives.
  • Obama Care never put serious research money towards curing the major diseases that drive high healthcare costs such as high frequency cancers and dementia type diseases.
  • You cannot resolve any problem unless you understand and address the underlying root causes. No difference here: Obama Care legislation never addressed these listed root causes and thus, has no chance of ever being successful.
But it is not just missing the root causes of our healthcare costs that makes Obama Care so horrible. It resulted in millions of Americans losing access to their favored doctors, hospitals, and insurance policies. It has caused insurance premiums, deductibles and copays to escalate substantially. It will likely add trillions of dollars to the national debt. It has exposed millions of Americans to higher than necessary identity theft chances. It has created government bureaucracies that are wastefully spending taxpayer wealth and being exploited by criminal elements. It has stifled economic growth and job creation.

These are just a sample of the types of idiocy that we have been reviewing for the past several years in this blog relative to Obama Care. To read those past posts, just enter the phrase, “the unfolding disaster,” in the search box above.

Several posts ago we reviewed the many, many failures and disasters of Obama Care, probably the worst piece of legislation ever passed when it comes to comparing it to its objectives and its promises. This was the Federal government’s most recent and deepest attempt to try and control the healthcare of Americans and it has ended badly.

In subsequent posts, we showed the numbers and realities around the world of how single payer healthcare systems always fail to provide effective and efficient health care to its citizens. Despite these realities, many Democratic candidates for President want to implement a failed system like this in this country. Today we will continue that discussion of failed single payer healthcare systems from other countries, further proof that this approach to healthcare is a bad, bad idea.

We continue that discussion today, the failures of the single payer healthcare model:

1) Obama Care, along with Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Administration, have proven how poorly government performs when given health care responsibilities. Medicare and Medicaid are hurtling towards fiscal insolvency and the Veterans Administration’s inability to serve our veterans’ healthcare needs is an ongoing scandal. But some people still think that giving government even more control over our healthcare needs is a good idea, often pointing to other countries that have total government control over their citizens’ health care needs.

One of those countries is England but according to the Foundation For Economic Education, for those in England, where government controls all aspects of one’s health care needs, it is not a good idea:

  • In the United States, the age-adjusted breast cancer 5-year survival rate is 88.9%, compared with just 81.1% in England.
  • The United States leads the world on the equivalent stat for prostate cancer (97.2%) vs. 83.2% in England.
  • Lung cancer: 18.7% in the United States vs. 9.6% in England; bowel cancer: 64.2% vs. 56.1%.
  • U.S. survival rates are also better for leukemia, ovarian cancer, stomach cancer, and liver cancer.
  • The age- and sex-standardized 30-day mortality rate for ischaemic stroke is just 3.6% in the United States vs. 9.2% in England; for haemorrhagic stroke, the figures are 22% vs. 26.5%.
  • Thus, real data shows us that giving the Federal government more control of our health care needs, going even beyond Obama Care, would not be healthy for us. Just ask the English folks, those have not died prematurely already vs. what would have happened in the U.S.
The Foundation quoted a line from The Guardian newspaper summary of a Commonwealth Fund Report where the report found that England’s health system was“the best in the world” with “the only serious black mark against the NHS was its poor record on keeping people alive.” In other words, the operation was a success even though the patient died. Obama Care is dying, replacing it with a program that is even more like Obama Care would be fatal to so many Americans.

2) We often talk about the high level numbers and results of Obama Care. How premiums and deductibles have increased dramatically over the years for Obama Care policies. How millions of people lost access to their preferred doctors, policies, and hospitals. How most of the 23 Obama Care co-ops went bankrupt. But consider the personal agony and stress below the high level numbers that Obama Care has caused a typical American:

  • James Rogers, writing for the Heritage Foundation on February 17, 2017, documented the harrowing Obama Care trip of Kim Quade.
  • Ms. Quade left her job as a school speech pathologist after 17 years to work solo, knowing that she would have to replace her school provided health insurance with an individual health insurance policy.
  • She did her research and found a plan that suited her particular needs for $188 a month with a $5,000 deductible and health savings account, terms she could afford.
  • She liked the concept of a health savings plan since it empowered her to take care of herself:“It was something that I was able to take care of on my own and I was happy about it. It’s the way I was raised: You take care of yourself.”
  • By 2015, her monthly premium cost had more than doubled to $188 (despite Obama’s promise that Americans could see an up to $2,500 annual reduction in their health insurance premiums).
  • But despite the whopping increase in premiums, she kept the policy since she liked the doctor network that it covered.
  • But shortly after the doubling of the premiums, they went up another $200 a month, at which point she switched to an Obama Care policy.
  • She ended up getting a policy with monthly premiums of $773 a month which was reduced to $333 after Federal subsidies, cheaper but still much more expensive than her original policy of $188 a month.
  • And that original policy covered flu shots and physicals, which her Obama Care policy did not, and after a bout with pneumonia, her Obama Care policy paid out only $50 towards the cost of two x-rays.
  • And now she has to go back out into the market again since the original Obama Care policy she took on is no longer available as insurance companies have left the area she lives in outside of Kansas City.
High costs, lower quality, fewer choices, higher turnover, that is how Obama Care played out for a regular American who just wanted some affordable health insurance coverage. And yet some Democrats and liberal want even more government control over our health care needs even though Obama Care’s intrusion into our healthcare needs was such a failure.

That will do it for now: single payer healthcare systems around the world have always resulted in higher costs, higher taxes, lower quality, and more suffering and agony as health care is delayed and worse. We have shown that four examples of government intervention into the health care market has always been a disaster: Medicare and Medicaid are hurtling towards bankruptcy, Obama Care was a failure along every imaginable perspective, and the operation of the Veterans Administration has resulted in delays in treating the healthcare needs of veterans, likely leading the deaths of many veterans in need.

And yet Democrats running for President still think that government intervention into the healthcare market is a good idea. Proving again that there is still no cure for stupid.

August, 2019, Part 7, The Unfolding Disaster That Is Obama Care: The Failure of Single Pay Health Care Systems Around the World, Continued

Every month for years now we have had to discuss how bad Obama Care is turning out to be under the continuing theme, “the unfolding disaster that is Obama Care.” This month is no different. You cannot resolve any problem unless you understand and address the underlying root causes.

Six posts ago we reviewed the many, many failures and disasters of Obama Care, probably the worst piece of legislation ever passed when it comes to comparing it to its objectives and its promises.

1) Dr. Kevin Pham and Robert Moffit, Phd, writing for the Heritage Foundation on August 13, 2018, laid out a perfect illustration why socialized medicine/single payer healthcare systems are almost always expensive. But first, a look at some of the real numbers the authors talk about and how government run healthcare makes a bad situation worse:

  • Depending on the assumption set used, this country will be looking at a doctor shortage of anywhere from between 43,000 to 121,000 doctors within 12 years.
  • A root cause of this shortage is the reality that doctors today spend more and more time on non medical, regulatory, and administrative activities, leading to frustration, burnout, and premature retirements.
  • Socialized medicine increases these frustrations while reducing the freedom to treat patients the way doctors are trained to treat them while capping their compensation.
So single payer health care plans, government control over health care decisions, make it difficult to get enough supply of high quality doctors to enter the field, making health care quality even worse, as we recently saw in England during the recent flu season:

  • Back in October, 1975, a British politician, Labor Minister David Cohen, had a rare insight into why his government’s actions, in this case the creation of socialized medicine and a single payer government run healthcare system would fail miserably: “The health service was launched on a fallacy. First, we were going to finance everything, cure the nation and then spending would drop. That fallacy has been exposed. Then there was a period when everybody thought the public could have whatever they needed on the health service- it was just a question of governmental will. Now we recognize that no country, even if they are prepared to pay the taxes, can supply everything.”
  • Fast forward to the winter of 2018 where a very bad strain of influenza hit the country.
  • British hospitals were overcrowded and overwhelmed which is not surprising since a survey conducted by the British Medical Association found that 82% of its members felt their workplaces were understaffed, which is not surprising given the point we made above about doctors not wanting to stay in the field due to overt government interference in the medical process.
  • Listen to one doctor describe his personal flu experience: “I came on to shift yesterday afternoon and there were patients literally everywhere. The corridor into the hospital was so busy we couldn’t have got a cardiac arrest patient through it into the resuscitation room. To say staff were at the end of their tethers would be a complete understatement.”
  • This pre-existing doctor shortage situation in a single payer system combined with the flu outbreak resulted in 50,000 surgeries being cancelled because limited resources were diverted to flu patients.
  • This in turn further endangered those that needed the surgery, likely making their medical conditions more expensive and dangerous to treat later.
  • By March, 2018, British emergency rooms had 15.4% of their patients waiting over four hours before seeing anyone for treatment.
  • This was the worst performance ever recorded.
  • Back in the real world, the number of ailing British citizens waiting 18 weeks or more for treatment increased by 35%, from 128,575 in 2016 to about 362,000 in 2017 to 490,000 patients in 2018.
  • Thus, half a million people in this single payer government run system had to wait four and a half months to get treatment.
  • Even worse, 2,755 sick folks had to wait OVER A YEAR to get treatment.
Long delays, poor quality, high costs, yeah, that is working out great. And yet despite this British reality and the unfolding disasters of Obama Care, some American politicians still want to bring single payer healthcare to America despite the failure of such a system across the world.

2) What if we are wrong? What if there is a set of numbers that track reality actually show that single payer systems, like the one in Canada, are actually pretty good? So let’s examine some healthcare numbers:

  • In the U.S., 56% of the citizens have private health insurance, 35% are covered with government financed health insurance (i.e. Medicare and Medicaid), and 9% are uninsured.
  • In Canada, the government provides “free” health insurance to 100% of the citizens but 67% of its citizens pay for additional, needed health insurance coverage.
  • The Canadian single payer system, while promoted as "universal,” does not cover prescription drug costs. dental care costs, and other medical costs which leads to a majority of them shelling out additional money to supplement their "free" government insurance.
  • Thus, according to the Canadian Institute for Health and Information, many Canadians go without drug insurance or dental care.
  • According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United States spent 17.2% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on health care in 2016 while Canada, on the other hand, spent less on health care, clocking in at just 10.3% of its GDP in 2016.
  • In 2016, for instance, the average American spent around $10,345 on health care, including insurance premiums, deductibles, co-pays, and other out-of-pocket costs while the average Canadian spent nearly half that, paying about $6,299 that same year.
  • According to a Fraser Institute study, Canadians on average wait 21.2 weeks to see a specialist after a referral from a GP doctor while in the U.S. the average wait time is 24.1 days in metro U.S. areas, according to a Merritt Hawkins study, i.e. it takes about seven times longer to see a medical specialist in Canada than in the U.S.
  • The Fraser study also found that in Canada, patients wait 4.1 weeks on average to get a CT scan, 10.8 weeks for an MRI scan, and 3.9 weeks for an ultrasound scan.
  • These Canadian wait times for basic diagnostics health tools is very, very much longer than in the U.S., long waiting times that could result in far more serious health and pain levels while waiting.
  • The long wait times has led 63,000 Canadians to travel outside of Canada for these basic tests in 2016, travel costs and diagnostic costs that were not covered by their government insurance.
  • According to University of Pennsylvania Wharton School professor, Mark Pauly, a professor of healthcare management, “the wait time for scans [in the U.S.] is minimal":“If you are in the ER and need a scan, you will get it right away. There may be some delay in scheduling at a particular facility if you want an elective scan. Though in any large city, I am sure you could find someone who would take you within a few days.”
  • Pauly also pointed out in the article that Canadians patients are more likely to suffer from acute diseases, have less access to specialists, and experience worse health outcomes than in the U.S,. since the Canadian system emphasizes primary care vs. acute care medicine and health care: “If you are a basically healthy person and your needs can be satisfied with primary care, you're probably going to be better off under the Canadian system. On the other hand, if you are sick, and especially if you have a chronic condition, you're going to wait longer in Canada and have to hobble around in pain for a longer period of time than you would in the U.S.”
  • Canadians have the 13th longest life expectancy rate, age 82, while Americans' expected life length at 79 ranks it 45th in the world.
  • Infant mortality rates are also lower in Canada, 4.5 deaths per 1,000 live births vs. 5.9 deaths in the U.S.
  • While about 1.7 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer every year with about 610,000 dying from the disease, according to the Canadian Cancer Society, last year only 206,000 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer with about 80,800 dying from the disease.
  • However, since the U.S. has nine times as many people than Canada, the cancer diagnosis and cancer death rates are a little higher in Canada.
  • Pauly stated in the article that “ordinary people in Canada are healthier than in the U.S., but outcomes for cancer and very serious illnesses are less good there. It's a great place to live as long as you don't get too sick, as one critic put it.”
  • But he also stated that since Canada has many more primary care doctors that can catch bad health trends earlier, which may account for the better ordinary health care and the horrible acute health results.
So, a lot of data but let me summarize: if you are relatively healthy then the Canadian system is better for you. If you do not need specialists, diagnostic scans, prescription drugs, have good, strong healthy teeth, you do not need to travel abroad for basic tests, are willing to risk a slightly higher cancer rate of diagnosis and death, and are willing to wait longer and endure more pain and get sicker and sicker, possibly endangering your life, while waiting to get treated by a specialist for a disease that you do get, than Canada is for you.

Thus, the numbers do nothing to change our conclusions: single payer systems cause more pain, cost more, have much more bureaucracy which cuts down on the efficiency of providing healthcare. If you are working under the Canadian single payer system, you are going to wait for a very long time just to get a single diagnostic test, tests we take for granted and expect to be done immediately in this country.

We are seven posts into this theme and we still have more to discuss on how badly single payer healthcare systems are in Canada, England, and elsewhere in the world. Stay tuned.

1) Let’s start with the British single payer system using a Freedom Outpost website article by Mac Slavo on January 24, 2018:

  • According to a recent BBC broadcast, hospital patients are dying in British hospital hallways according to 68 British doctors.
  • These 68 doctors sent out an open letter that was addressed to the British Prime Minister which detailed what they called inhumane conditions that are occurring in the nation’s socialized National Health Services (NHS) hospitals.
  • In addition, the doctors cited statistics that show that just in December, 2017 alone, over 300,000 British patients were forced to wait for more than four hours in hospital waiting rooms before being seen by medical personnel.
  • And those folks did not include the thousands of others that were forced to wait hours in ambulances since they could not even fit into emergency rooms.
  • The letter further noted that it was now routine for patients to be left on gurneys in hospital hallways for as long as 12 hours before getting a regular hospital bed.
  • In further disgusting details the doctors showed that around 120 patients a day actually receive medical treatment while in public hallways and waiting rooms, and are “made to undergo humiliating treatments in the public areas of hospitals, and some even dying prematurely as a result….One patient reported having gone to the emergency room with a gynecological problem which had left her in severe pain and bleeding, a lack of treatment rooms led hospital staff to examine her in a busy corridor, in full view of other patients.“
  • In the first week of 2018, over 97% of the National Health Service facilities were operating at levels deemed overcrowded which made them “unsafe.”
What a mess, people waiting for long times to get substandard health care.

2) Let’s get another view of the British single payer system from a Businessweek article:
  • The NHS is being overwhelmed by patients and complaints while complaining about being underfunded.
  • One driving force for all of this is that under their single payer system, everyone gets any medical treatment they can get to, no questions asked, even if those treatments are highly likely to be unnecessary.
  • A few years ago the British Red Cross said the British single payer system was on the verge of a humanitarian crisis.
  • And this observation/finding was before a bad flu epidemic hit the NHS system.
  • There are currently too many patients, whose overall average age is increasing along with the medical needs of an older population, and not enough medical staff.
  • Britain has fewer doctors, CT scanners, and MRI units per capita than most European nations.
  • It ranks near the bottom of European countries when it comes to infant mortality.
  • Many other European countries score better when it comes to avoidable deaths, cancer survival, innovation, consistency of service, and other medical and health measurements.
Again, what a mess. The article does try to make the case that more money might solve a lot, but not all, of these problems. But then it turns around and quotes a former government official who calls the NHS a “bottomless pit” when it comes to funding, implying that shoveling money at the problem will not resolve the lousy healthcare that the British people currently get for their tax dollars.

That will do it for today. Anyone who still thinks that the single payer model is a great idea for the U.S.since it worked so well in England obviously did not read the above horror stories.

August, 2019, Part 4, The Unfolding Disaster That Is Obama Care: The Failure of Single Payer Health Care Systems Around the World, Continued

Most months for years now we have had to discuss how bad Obama Care is turning out to be under the continuing theme, “the unfolding disaster that is Obama Care.” This month is no different.

You cannot resolve any problem unless you understand and address the underlying root causes.

Four posts ago we reviewed the many, many failures and disasters of Obama Care, probably the worst piece of legislation ever passed when it comes to comparing it to its objectives and its promises. This was the Federal government’s most recent and deepest attempt to try and control the healthcare of Americans and it has ended badly.

In our previous three posts, we showed the numbers and realities around the world of how single payer healthcare systems always fail to provide effective and efficient health care to its citizens.

1) Let’s start up in Canada today. The Fraser Institute has completed a research report on the Canadian healthcare system called, "Waiting Your Turn." It found that:

  • A Canadian citizen has to wait about 18.2 weeks on average to see a specialist doctor in Canada if they need specific medical care, i.e. more than four months.
  • This average wait time of 18.2 weeks up from 9.3 weeks in 1993, i.e. the wait times are getting far worse over time.
  • And this is the median average amount of wait time, which means half of those Canadians needing specific medical help wait more than four months to see a health care specialist
  • Canada "rations" healthcare through long waiting times and limited access, according to Dr. Roger Stark, a healthcare policy expert at the Washington Policy Center who told The Heartland Institute: "These long waits would not be acceptable to Americans, who are rightly accustomed to timely healthcare."
  • And the wait times vary significantly across Canada with the New Brunswick median wait time being 37.3 weeks, (an astonishing nine months plus) to Ontario where the median wait time is 14.1 weeks, still over three months.
  • Wait times also vary greatly according to what type of specialist you need to see with the median wait time for orthopedic surgery being 42.2 weeks, neurology patients median wait time is an average of 31.2 weeks, and the wait for radiation oncology is 4.2 weeks.
  • Think about this last statement: if you are fighting cancer, on average you have to wait over a month to get radiation treatment, four weeks where your cancer continues to spread.
  • Canadians are waiting 3.8 weeks for a CT scan, 8.7 weeks for an MRI scan, and 3.3 weeks for an ultrasound.
  • Extensive wait times can have serious consequences, Fraser report co-author Bacchus Barua points out: "For example, they may force some patients to endure months of physical pain and mental anguish, they may result in lower worker productivity and [forgone] wages, they can sometimes result in a potentially treatable illness being transformed into a debilitating permanent condition, and in the worst cases, they may result in death."
  • Barua goes on to claim that the extensive wait times are not due to lack of funding and resources since Canadian healthcare expenditures per person have gone up by 50%, adjusting for inflation, since 1993.
  • Thus, he claims the likely underlying causes of these gross waiting times are the government monopoly on the financing and delivery of medical services and the lack of appropriate incentives for providers.
  • "This is indirect rationing," said Dr. Dale Dunn, a policy adviser to The Heartland Institute. "Almost 30 years ago I started seeing doctors leaving Canada because they were disgusted with the system because it prevented them from treating patients."
Steadily increasing costs for steadily decreasing quality, a fatal combination in many cases.

2) Despite these blatant disasters of the single payer model around the world, our politicians continue to ignore reality and continue to push for a single payer system in this country:
  • The New York State Assembly's Health Committee actually held a hearing on a proposed legislative bill to adopt single-payer healthcare in the state of New York, proving again there is no cure for stupid.
  • Bernie Sanders’ single payer proposal for us is estimated to cost $32 TRILLION just in the first ten years.
  • This would be about $3.2 TRILLION a year, equal about 80% of the entire Federal government budget today.
  • This $32 TRILLION would require an annual average tax increase of $24,000 for every American household.
  • The state of Vermont looked at a single payer system for their state in 2014 and gave up when the estimated costs would require a state tax increase of 160%, about $27,500 per Vermont household per year.
  • In California, the estimated cost of their entry into a single payer system was a whopping $440 billion a year, a sum greater than the entire state government budget.
  • The $440 billion came out to a per household annual cost of $26,500.
  • As we discussed in yesterday’s post, in Canada, a country that has had a single payer system for a long time, a whopping three quarters of Canadians also see fit to purchase supplemental health insurance to cover prescription drugs, ambulance costs, dentistry, and other services not fully covered by the single payer system, which kind of defeats the whole concept of a single payer system which is supposed to cover “all” medical costs.
  • And even if a liberal thinks these astronomical costs are manageable, keep in mind that no government program has ever come in under budget so the $32 TRILLION estimate is probably too low by orders of magnitude.
Astronomical costs for low quality healthcare, rife with long wait times for treatment, again, a fatal combination. More single payer failures to follow.
