August, 2021, Part 1, Political Class Insanity: Pigs Are More Important Than People In California, A Congresswoman Protects Herself But Not Her Citizens, and an AK-47 Shows Up In San Francisco

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

1) Any number of times we have discussed the harsh reality of living in California:

  • A large and growing homeless population.

  • A large and growing violent crime crisis.

  • A large and growing unfunded financial liabilities problem of the state and local governments.

  • Higher and higher taxes.

  • An overall poverty rate that makes the state the poorest in the country.

  • Population migration out of the state at a higher rate than the migration into the state.

  • Failed government policies and programs, e.g. the bungled high speed railway project.

  • Higher and higher gas and utility prices.

Yes, the state is in bad shape. So much so that for the first time ever, it recently lost enough population to lose a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. One would hope that state politicians were working feverishly to resolve these major issues that affect every citizen in the state one way or the other.

But, alas, if we have learned anything about American politicians, we know that hope and the right properties are rarely ever their priority:

  • Beginning next year, the state of California government will start to enforce an animal welfare proposition that requires that there be adequate space in the breeding of pigs, chickens, and veal calves.

  • Pig and pork producers think that only 4% of the pig/hog operations in the country currently comply with this new state government regulation.

  • Yes, the heck with the welfare of the homeless, hungry, poor, and highly taxed state residents, let’s make sure that pigs across the country have adequate space around themselves.

  • Talk about bad priorities.

  • Unless something changes in the regulation or by court order, we are just months away from seeing the amount of bacon eligible to be sold in the state going almost to zero which means with the supply slashed the price of legal bacon will go through the roof.

  • But if hog and pig producers have to adjust their operations to comply, that will also mean higher bacon costs for the rest of us since the producers will pass along their higher costs to meet California rules onto the rest of us.

  • An economist at North Carolina State University estimates that the cost per animal to comply will go up by 15% which is a cost increase the rest of us will have to pay.

  • A consulting firm estimated that if just half of the bacon and pork supply was cut 50% for California, those state residents would see a 60% price increase in pork products like bacon.

Unbelievable that this is what the California state government is working on as over a hundred thousand Americans in that state are homeless, millions are probably hungry and poor, etc. Such bad priorities.

But the state residents have no one to blame but themselves since this was a public proposition that apparently was overwhelmingly approved so not a lot of sympathy for them. But really, a ridiculous proposition like this should never have even made it onto the ballot. But given that American politicians never seem to be able to resolve issues that affect millions of Americans, they end up working on idiocy like this. So sad.

2) Democrat city politicians across the country have jumped on the insane and fatal bandwagon of “defunding the police.” From Portland to LA to Chicago to NYC and other big liberal cities, the defunding of police departments has resulted in skyrocketing violent crime and higher and higher murder rates. People have unnecessarily died because of this insane slogan.

But the politicians that made these fatal decisions made sure that they were protected:

  • In Minneapolis, the epicenter of defund the police because of the George Floyd murder, city council members voted to hire private security guards for themselves, using taxpayer money, since they felt the defunded city police department, that they voted to defund,  could no longer adequately protect themselves.

  • In Chicago, the mayor ordered extra police protection around her home to protect herself and her family from the rising city crime rate and violence even though she helped defund the city police department.

  • And now the hypocrisy of defunding the police has reached Congress.

  • Congresswoman Cori Bush, a big advocate to defund police departments across the country, said in a CBS interview that it was okay for her to spend thousands of dollars on a private security guard company to protect her but that the rest of us should have to contend with weakened police departments across the country.

  • In a fit of blatant hypocrisy and insensitivity, she said, “Would rather I die? You would rather me die? Is that what you want to see? You want to see me die? Because that could be the alternative. So, either I spend $70,000 on private security over the last few months and I’m here standing now and able to speak, able to help save eleven million people from being evicted, or I could possibly have a death attempt on my life. And we’re also talking about the same exact people who say horrible things about me, who lie to get — to build up their base, and then because they lie about me, I receive death threats. I’m going to make sure I have security. Because I know I have had attempts on my life, and I have too much work to do. There are too many people that need help right now for me to allow that. So, if I end up spending 200,000, if I spend ten more dollars on it, you know what, I get to be here to do the work. So, suck it up. And defunding the police has to happen. We need to defund the police and put that money into social safety nets. Because we’re trying to save lives.”

  • So she can afford private security guards for her own safety but in the same statement denies that protection to others that cannot afford such protection, unreal hypocrisy.

Given that she comes from St.Louis, one of the leading murder rate cities in the country and the world, I can see why she is concerned. But this is a “let them eat cake” moment, protection for me, not for thee. Herself and family are protected but she is more than willing to strip that protection away from others, less wealthy than herself, and worse, apparently not even care about it. Insane.

3) Despite the Second Amendment, Biden and other liberals across the country are hellbent on stripping us of our right to have weapons and protect ourselves, our family, and our property. They somehow think that extensive gun control will make society safer.

But the cities and states across the country that have the strictest gun control laws also seem to have the highest crime, nurder, and violence rates in the world. Chicago has extensive gun control laws and every year more people are shot, wounded and killed in that city by guns than anywhere else. Baltimore has extensive gun control laws and for years has had one of the highest murder rates in the country. California has extensive gun control laws and crime and murders in that state's cities continue to grow.

What happens in these locations is that law abiding citizens find it harder and harder to legally own guns to protect themselves while criminals continue to ignore gun control laws and are free to plunder and kill. That is why they are criminals, the basic definition of ignoring existing laws. No criminal bent on robbing, raping, and killing is going to stop and say, I better not rob, rape and kill, it is against the law.

A perfect example this situation and how politicians are so out of touch with reality when it comes to gun control recently happened in San Francisco, a city and state with extensive gun control laws:

  • Someone recently snapped a photo in the city of a woman hanging out of the passenger side window, in the middle of the day,  of a car holding an AK-47 automatic rifle.

  • It is illegal to own an automatic weapon in this country, not just California and not just Sam Francisco.

  • But there it was, someone in a car on the city streets not only owning an AK-47 but brandishing it outside a car window in full sight.

  • According to the city police department: "During an illegal exhibition of speed event at Barneveld & McKinnon, a passenger leaned out of a Cadi holding an AK47; see photo. SFPD Traffic Company personnel worked up a case, and seized this particular vehicle today."

  • The car in the photo was found and towed away by the police, no word on the occupants of the car.

  • Despite strict gun control laws, the number of shootings in the city has almost doubled in the past year.

  • There were 199 shootings in the city in the first six months of 2021 compared to 58 at the same time last year.

Agreed that you need some kind of gun control to make sure that certain types of people find it hard to legally get a gun: minors, past felons, crazy folks. But the extensive gun control laws in San Francisco and elsewhere that prevent law abiding, fearful citizens from protecting themselves do not reduce violent crime. The mayor of Chicago knows that, the town council in Minneapolis knows that, and Cori Bush in Congress knows that.  That is why they hired private security guards to protect themselves often at taxpayer expense, but would deny the rest of us that same level of protections.

Failed gun control laws, politicians' hypocrisy of protecting themselves but not their citizens, and pigs have a higher priority than needy citizens in California, insanity.

May, 2016, Part 3, Political Class Insanity: Nobody Likes Clinton and Trump, Afghanistan Fail and More

In fact, last month we set a record, needing ten full posts to cover it all.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

It looks like our politicians have been especially insane over the past month or so let’s get started with the latest insanity from today’s American politicians:

1) As of the April 29, 2016 issue of The Week magazine, not one of the five remaining Presidential candidates, Trump, Kasich, Cruz, Sanders, or Clinton, was regarded favorably by a majority of those polled by a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll. Trump was the most disliked candidate with 65% of those polled viewing him unfavorably and only 24% viewing him favorably. 56% view Clinton unfavorably and only 32% view her favorably but that gap between the two measures is getting worse over time, doubling in the past month of that issue of The Week.

Bottom line: our political processes are so broken in this country that even the last standing candidates are viewed with disdain by the majority of Americans. Maybe it is time to change the processes since what we have now is obviously not working.

2) Staying with that same issue of The Week, an article in that issue reviewed how a Taliban truck bombing in the center of the Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan, killed at least 64 people and wounded hundreds more. Many of those hurt and killed were women and children and other other civilians. At the same time of the bomb’s detonation, Taliban gunmen entered the government’s National Security Directorate building, that nation’s equivalent Secret Service organization, and began firing.

Thus, after more than a decade of supporting the war effort in Afghanistan, trillions of taxpayer dollars spent, and thousands of U.S. military personnel killed and wounded, this country still cannot stop a massive bombing within the capital’s city limits and a direct attack on what should be a secure branch of the government. From Bush to Obama, what a massive military, foreign affairs, and economic failure.

3) We often talk about how screwed up the country's tax code is today. It is long, cumbersome, impossible to police, and detrimental to economic growth. An article from The Atlantic, that was summarized in the April 29, 2016 issue of The Week magazine, outlined how out of the $4 TRILLION in profits that the top 50 American companies made from 2008 through 2014, $1 TRILLION of those profits have been left off shore in other countries to avoid paying the second highest corporate income tax rate in the world in the U.S.

Imagine how much good $1 TRILLION would be for this economy if the political class actually had put together a coherent tax code that encouraged companies to invest in America rather than stranding a trillion dollars overseas, a trillion dollars that generate no taxes for the Federal government and create no incremental economic advantages for American workers. Insanity...with a lot of zeros attached to that dollar sign.

4) Staying with the same issue of The Week magazine, April 29, 2016, there was a synopsis of an article written by Malik Jalal for The Independent in England. Mr. Jalal claims that he is a member of the North Waziristan Peace Committee, a group of Pakistani tribal leaders that are trying to find peace among the warring parties in Pakistan, parties that include the Taliban. He claims that while his own government recognizes their mission and search for peace, the Obama administration has ruled them as a terrorist group aligned with the Taliban and has been trying to kill him with a series of drone attacks since he has been placed on a U.S. kill list.

As a result, multiple times U.S. drones have attacked him or what they thought was him with the following results:

  • The first drone attack destroyed his car and injured his nephew who had borrowed the car while killing four innocent men in an adjacent vehicle.
  • The next drone attack blew up a car similar to his, killing another four innocent Pakistanis.
  • The next attack killed three more innocent victims.
  • A fourth drone strike, aimed at tribal leaders, killed 40 people.
  • 51 people killed without successfully killing the intended target.
  • He also claims that U.S. drone attacks kill nine Pakistani children for every successful killing of an intended target.
I have no idea if he is telling the truth. But if he is telling the truth, how much more insanity, wasted taxpayer wealth, and killing of innocent civilians will there have to be before the Obama administration takes a hard look at what looks like a horrible military and public relations program.

5) We always like to give equal time to corrupt politicians regardless of what level of government they serve. Natalie Johnson, writing for the Washington Free Beacon on May 3, 2016, helped us with that objective when she reported that former New York State Assembly Speaker, Sheldon Silver, was sentenced in Federal court to 12 years in prison on corruption charges. In addition, Silver will have to pay back $5.2 million in the money he stole and another $1.75 million in criminal fines.

He was found guilty of getting $5.2 million from his corruption activities over a two decade period. These illegal activities, from a legal perspective, involved honest-services fraud, extortion and money laundering. The good news is that he was caught and found guilty and will spend 12 years in prison. The bad news is why did it take 20 years to get him for his corruption. That’s the insanity of the whole situation.

6) Citizens Against Government Waste are an organization that identifies and shames wasteful government spending in Washington. Every year, they publish their annual”Pig Book” which documents the worse pork barrel spending and wasting of taxpayer money by the political class in Washington in the past 12 months. This year they added another feature to their website which documents their “Pork Of Shame,” some of their most egregious wasteful spending of taxpayer wealth. A few "Pork Of Shame" entrants include the following idiotic spending of Congress:

  • $15 million for “wood utilization research.”
  • $681,000 for one latrine at Fort Harrison.
  • $77.2 million for bike paths.
  • $10.1 million for peanut research.
  • $7.3 million for grasshopper research.
  • $1 million for a dinosaur exhibit at the LA Museum
  • $273,000 to “combat Goth culture.”
  • $3 million for the Alaskan “bridge to nowhere.”
  • $350,000 for the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
  • $16.1 million for brown snake research.
  • $500,000 for the Sparta Teapot Museum.
  • $1.8 million for “swine odor and manure management.”
  • $948.6 million for Abrams tanks... that the Pentagon does not want or need.
The entire list can be seen at: http://cagw.org/reporting/pig-book/pig-book-timeline

Keep in mind, as we often remind readers, that while the Washington political class was spending real dollars and taxpayer wealth on these inane projects, millions of Americans were going hungry, were homeless, were drug addicted, were unemployed or were without proper health care, including thousands of our veterans.

Now ask yourself if we really needed to spend $500,000 on a Teapot museum and not on these unfortunate Americans.

Did we really need to spend over a quarter of a million dollars to combat a lifestyle choice, Goth, and not on on these unfortunate Americans?

Shouldn’t people or industries of these vested interests, e.g. the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the pork industry, the peanut industry, etc., pay for their own interests and either let the taxpayers keep their own money or divert this vested interest money to the unfortunate Americans who need help.

Just another set of outrageously bad priorities in this country as forced on us by the political class.

That will do it for today’s insanity. Bad spending priorities, political corruption, a potentially ineffective and inhumane drone military program, a stranded trillion dollars, failure in Afghanistan, and leading political figures that no one likes. You cannot make up this insanity, it is too gruesome and original. More tomorrow.

Earmarks To The Right Of Them, Earmarks To The Left Of Them Into The Valley Of Waste Rode Every Politician Imaginable.

Today we do a take off on the famous Alfred Lord Tennyson work, "The Charge Of The Light Brigade" which contained the memorable lines "Cannon to the left of them, cannon to the right of them... into the valley of death rode the 600." Unfortunately, we have more than 600 politicians that constantly charge through the Valley of Waste.

We start today with reports out of California. Recall that the state government of California is about $20 billion short in its next fiscal budget. The LA Times has run a series of articles this week that tell how some state welfare recipients have been using their welfare debit cash cards not to buy food and clothing but to visit strip clubs and casinos where they then received cash from the ATM machines at those locations. The obvious conclusion is that the welfare money from those debit cards was then used as entertainment at either the strip club or casino where that ATM machine was located. The Times estimates that at least $4.4 million was cashed out using welfare debit cards at casinos and over $12,000 was used at strip club ATMs.

Now, it could be that somebody on welfare just happened to come across a needed ATM machine inside a casino or inside a Strip club and nothing nefarious went on. However, it is doubtful that nothing nefarious went on for over $4 million worth of cash outs. Second, this is the amount of fraud that state investigators have identified, how much more fraud of this type and other types are also going on in a state about to go bankrupt? The state is now blocking those ATMs at strip clubs and casinos from accepting welfare debit cards but obviously, a welfare recipient could almost as easily take cash out of their debit card in a local supermarket before going over to the strip club or casino, which would still constitute fraud. Another government program that sounds great on paper but as usual, gets fouled up in implementation, much like every other government program.

There is some good news on the fraud and waste front. Three people in the New Jersey state government have set up a website, "Report New Jersey Government Waste" (www.stopgovernmentwastenj.com) which allows state workers to identify waste, fraud and abuse within their own departments via an online form process. A person may remain anonymous if preferred. However, if their suggestion is implemented, they could be eligible for extra paid vacation days. An enhanced form of recognition in the form of cash is being considered but has not been funded yet.

The originators' strategy was based on a simple problem analysis (how quaint, politicians doing a root cause problem analysis!) and their conclusion that the front line government workers are the best source of information on wasteful government spending. Given that New Jersey is about $10 billion short relative to its next fiscal budget, these three New Jersey politicians (Caroline Casagrande, Declan O'Scanlon and Jennifer Beck) should be applauded for thinking out of the box relative to taming wasteful government spending. Or maybe, they read Page 5/Step 1 in "Love My Country, Loathe My Government" which proposed the exact same process for the Federal government.

No blog on government waste would be complete without a quick visit to my favorite website, www.cagw.org, the website for Citizens Against Government Waste. Every year they publish their annual "Pig Book" which categorizes and documents the thousands of wasteful spending items in the Federal government budget and who sponsored the waste. If Step 44 from "Love My Country, Loathe My Government" was implemented, almost all of these wasteful spending issues would go away since Step 44 would prohibit any Federal spending for any program or project unless it significantly impacted the lives of citizens form at least five states. If a program did not meet that criteria, the Federal government would leave the funding up to those states involved and the saved Federal tax dollars would be used to reduce taxes and the national debt.

Thus, in closing, just a smattering of wasteful spending form the "Valley Of Waste" known as the 2009 Federal budget, as documented in the 2009 Pig Book:
  • $2.2 million for the state of New York's Center For Grape Genetics. Given that the New York wine and grape industry is worth about $6 billion, the Federal government should make New York state or the industry pay for the Center.
  • $1.8 million for swine odor and manure management research in Iowa. I told you that Federal wasteful spending stinks. Let the people in Iowa cope with the smell or fund their own research.
  • $866,000 for stable fly control in Nebraska.
  • $1.8 million for a honey bee lab in Texas.
  • $243,000 (and $12 million since 1995) for floriculture support in Hawaii even though the floriculture industry in that state is worth over $105 million. Obviously, the in state industry has enough pollen to cover the $243,000.
  • $200,000 for the tattoo removal violence prevention program in California. Let's see, remove tattoos, violence goes down. I don't think so. Anyway, let California pay for it. Oops, they cannot because their money is being spent by welfare recipients in casinos and strip clubs.
  • $800,000 for a New Jersey program to prevent malaria and dengue fever. Trust me, having lived in New Jersey most of my life, there is not an $800,000 malaria and dengue fever problem in that state.
  • $5 million for lighthouse improvements at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Hey, if the Statue Of Liberty did not get any federal tax dollars for its improvement and restoration, the lighthouse at Apostle Islands should not get any either.
  • $270,000 for the Hood Canal Dissolved Oxygen Study in Washington state. You cannot make this stuff up.
  • $400,000 to save the Salisbury House in Iowa, home of cosmetics pioneer Carl Weeks. Same argument here relative to the Statue Of Liberty.
That's enough for today, the Valley Of Waste is wide and deep, we will ride into the Valley in the future whenever we want to get depressed.

Why Earmarks Never Benefit Average Taxpayers

I have meant to do this post for a while but have been constantly distracted by the atrocity known as Obama Care. Today I want to mathematically prove what my gut sensed for a long time: Congressional earmarks never benefit the average taxpayer and provide advantage only to incumbent politicians. As we have reviewed in previous posts, earmarks are specific financial grants of taxpayer money to businesses and other organizations, usually granted in return for a donation to the sponsoring politician's re-election campaign.

However, despite this trade off of taxpayer money for campaign donations, I have heard some people defend their Congressman or woman and their earmarks because they "they bring home the pork/bacon" to the home Congressional district. They act as if the money their Congressional representative directs back to someone or some organization in their district makes it a good idea to continue the earmark process, especially if their Congressional representative is conniving enough to get more than the next politician. But, consider the following math:
  • The organization, Citizens Against Government Waste, who studies the earmark process, estimated that Federal earmarks in 2009 totalled $19.6 billion and 10,160 individual earmarks. Since we already know that the level of earmarks exceeded 11,000 in Obama's latest budget, let's conservatively assume that 2010 earmarks wasted $20 billion of taxpayer dollars.
  • The latest estimate of the United States population is 308,941,909 as of ten o'clock this morning.
  • There are 435 Congressional districts.
  • There are, on average, 710,211 people in each Congressional district.
  • If we divide the total dollars of earmarks by the number of Congressional districts we see that an average Congressional district should expect $45,977,011 in earmark money to be directed to each district.
  • If we divide $45,977,011 by 710,211 in an average district, each person in that average district should expect to get $64.74 in benefit from Federal earmarks.
Thus, some people are happy to get some value back for their tax dollars when earmark money comes back to their district. However, what they fail to realize is that while they may be getting earmark money back, they are also funding earmarks in 434 other Congressional districts. If we remove $45,977,011 from the total $20 billion earmark total and divide that by the population of the United States that do not live in your average district, we see that we are contributing .... $64.74 to support earmarks in the other Congressional districts. In other words, it is a zero sum game when you come to average district sizes and average earmark levels.

In a zero sum game, we pay as much in earmarks to support other districts as we may be getting into our district. The only beneficiaries are politicians that barter those earmarks for campaign donations and the few people or organizations in the district that receive the earmarks. Would it not be better to give an average family of four about $250 to spend as they please ($64.74 times four), since they earned the money, then let the political class use it for their own perpetuation in office?

Let's look at another example. Some people might say that earmarks are a good thing if their Congressman or woman is sneaky and low enough to get more than an average level of earmark dollars. Wouldn't that be a good thing for my district? Not necessarily. Consider my Congressman, Bill Young, from the Tampa Bay area. According to several sources, in 2009 Congressman Young was responsible for getting funding for 86 earmarks worth $162,660,000, almost four times the amount of earmark dollars the average Congressional district would expect. Thus, you would expect that those of us in Congressman Young's district would be ecstatic, he really brought home the pork. However, consider what some of this money was used for and the fact that I live in Palm Harbor, Florida:
  • Some of the earmark money was used for road construction in St. Petersburg, Florida
  • Some of the earmark money was used for revitalization of downtown Clearwater, Florida
  • Some of the earmark money was used for a sewer upgrade in Treasure Island, Florida
As you might expect, I am not very happy about the high number of earmarks in my Congressional district since the short list of examples above, and others not listed, have absolutely no impact on my life except for the fact that my taxes helped to finance these earmarks. I have never been in Treasure Island, I do not shop in downtown Clearwater, and I rarely go to St. Petersburg. Thus, there is no reason to be excited about the higher than average levels of Congressman Young's earmark bonanza since they have no benefit to me. I would prefer to keep the taxes I paid to support earmarks and let the residents of St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Treasure Island pay for their own expenses.

That is why Step 44 in "Love My Country, Loathe My Government" is so important: Prohibit the use of Federal programs or tax dollars for any project unless it materially benefits a high percentage of residents in at least five states. As we have proved mathematically above, there is no financial benefit to taxpayers when earmarks are involved, even if my Congressional representative is better than average at landing earmark money. We end up subsidizing earmarks in ever other district and earmark money coming into our district rarely benefits the average taxpayer. Better to let us keep our money and spend it in our local communities on things and services we need and not subsidize incumbents re-election campaigns.

sex. lies and videotape - Political Class Style - Part 2

Two days ago we covered the sex and videotape portions of our theme, which was based on the 1990s movie - "sex, lies and videotape," of the political class. Today we will cover the "lies" portion. We will not review the extensive list of political class adulterers again (John Edwards, Eliot Spitzer, Bill Clinton, etc.) since although adultery is a form of lying that we covered under the "sex" section.

From a "lies" perspective, there is just so much that we could include. We could start with the first George Bush who said "Read My Lips," inferring that he would never raise taxes. Shortly thereafter he did raise taxes. If we go back to Nixon, there were untold number of lies as it related to Watergate. Bill Clinton bellowed that "he did not have sex with that woman" (Monica Lewinsky) which of course he did. The second George Bush told us that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction which of course it did not. Every time Congress and the political class pass a spending bill of any kind, it always goes over budget and under performs. Given that it ALWAYS happens, there appears to a systematic lie to all political maneuvers and projects.

But Barack Obama gets special attention in this post, either because he is the most recent President and his lies are still in our minds or because he tells the most lies. Consider:

  • The President boasted that his administration will not have lobbyists in powerful positions but it does.
  • The President promised that he would keep earmarks and pork projects below two thousand per fiscal year, the same levels from ten years ago. His latest budget had almost six times the amount promised.
  • The President promised to get our troops out of Iraq but he has not done that and it does not appear that he will do that in the foreseeable future since he now plans to permanently garrison 50,000 troops in country.
  • The President promised to close the terrorist prison at Guantanamo Bay but he has not done so.
  • The President promised not to raise taxes for those not making over several hundred thousand dollars a year but his raising of cigarette taxes has already raised taxes for the those making less than his threshold and his massive deficit spending levels will eventually and significantly raise taxes for every income producing American.
  • The President promised to unite the country but under his administration the country is more divided as ever as the President has allowed critics of his policies to be called un-American, a%#holes, knuckle dragging Neanderthals, and racists while he remained silent.
  • The President said health care reform and its benefits would not cover illegal immigrants but it does (Page 50, Section 152 in current legislation). Looks like Congressman Joe Wilson was right when he called Obama a liar, maybe Pelosi should revoke his censure.
  • The President said that there would not be rationing of health care under his health care reform legislation but there is (Page 30, Section 123 of the current legislation says there will be a government committee that decides what treatment and benefits you get - sounds like rationing to me).
  • The President said there would not be "death panels" under his health care reform legislation but this appears to be another lie (page 425, Lines 4-12 calls for the government to mandate "Advance-Care Planning Consult," page 425, Lines 22-25 calls for the government to provide an approved list of end-of-life resources, guiding you in death.)
  • The President said he will not raise taxes for those not making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year but the current health care reform legislation legislates eight new taxes into existence that could affect anyone, regardless of income levels (e.g. Page 167, Lines 18-23 - any individual who doesn't have acceptable health care according to the government will be taxed at 2.5% of income regardless of income levels.)
The Obama list of lies could go on further but let's stop here. Again, maybe because his lies are fresher in our minds has resulted in a longer list. or, maybe he just lies more, either intentionally or unintentionally. In either case it does not matter. Our political class continues to be loaded with liars, adulterers, and people so stupid as to have gotten themselves videotaped in either compromising or illegal situations. All the more reason to dump all incumbents in November and when they come up for re-election in subsequent years. We have seen this movie to many times, let's put the political class version of "sex, lies, and videotape" back on the shelf and start looking for a new movie.

"Dump The Incumbents Week" - Part 4

For the next two days will be looking at some data and information from the fabulous website, http://www.flipcongress2010.com/. The intent of the this website is to get the message out to vote against all incumbents in November in order to clean out Congress, get in some new people with new ideas, and break the paralyzing grip that campaign donation money has on the current members of the political class.

Today we will look at what it costs to buy favors from our current crop of Senators and Congressmen and women. As you will see, it does not take a whole lot. For a campaign donation of several thousand dollars you can usually get a taxpayer funded earmark worth hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions of dollars. Almost everyone benefits from the current deal: politicians get money and favors for their re-election campaigns or for their personal use and companies and lobbyists get money for their interests, clients, and firms. Only the taxpayer loses in the form of higher taxes and non-productive use of the current taxes collected. The examples below are only a SMALL subset of what goes on in Washington, the http://www.flipcongress2010.com/ website has details of shady practices on many more Washington politicians.

Let's Make A Deal, Washington Style!

Georgia Senator Isakson - Arranged a $4 million earmark for Northrop Gruman in exchange for a $7,000 donation and arranged a $1.6 million earmark for Scientific Research Corp. in exchange for a $2,900 donation. (Source: Seattle Times)

Hawaiian Senator Inouye - Secured a $135 million taxpayer financed bailout after intervening on behalf of a poorly managed, non-qualifying bank. Why? Inouye had most of his net worth invested in that bank. (Source: Hawaii Free Press)

Illinois Senator Durbin - Arranged a $1.6 million earmark for Gentex in exchange for a $2,000 donation and arranged another $1.6 million earmark for Epir Technologies in exchange for a $2,700 donation. (Source: Seattle Times) Also, Durbin sold off $42,696 of mutual fund shares on Sept 19, 2008, immediately after a confidential briefing and legislative directive pertaining to the impending financial crisis and banking bailouts. By the end of the month and before the October market collapse, he had sold off $115,696. (Source: Washington Times)

Indiana Senator Bayh - Arranged for an earmark of $800,000 for General Atomic Technologies in exchange for a $1,000 donation and arranged an earmark of $800,000 to Briartek in exchange for a $2,500 donation. (Source: Seattle Times)

New York Senator Gill brand - Received ACORN's endorsement for her re-election, stating "I am honored to have the endorsement of ACORN and proud to partner with them on an agenda...". She then voted to funnel taxpayer money into ACORN even AFTER the videos surfaced showing a pattern of illegal and immoral activity within the ACORN organization. (Source: The Albany Project)

North Carolina Senator Burr - Arranged a $4.5 million earmark for General Dynamics in exchange for a $10,000 donation and arranged for a $2 million earmark for E. I. DuPont DeNamours in exchange for a $5,000 donation. (Source: Seattle Times)

Vermont Senator Leahy - Arranged for a $10 million earmark for General Dynamics in exchange for a $18,200 donation and arranged for a $1.6 million earmark for Goodrich in exchange for a $7,500 donation. (Source: Seattle Times)

California Congresswoman Sanchez - Sanchez paid three of her sister Loretta's Congressional staff members from her district's federal budget funds when Loretta's office was short on funds. (Source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/). Sister Loretta arranged an earmark of $800,000 for Irvine Sensors in exchange for a $3,800 donation and arranged an earmark of $1.6 million for Digibeam Corp. in exchange for a donation of $3,800. (Source: Seattle Times) Still not done, the Congresswoman earmarked $3.2 million to PMA clients in exchange for a donation of $60,118. (Source: FreeRepublic.com)

Iowa Congressman Boswell - Boswell arranged an earmark of $3.5 Million for Goodrich Corp in exchange for a donation of $3000. (Source: Seattle Times)

Congressman Capuano - Arranged an earmark of $2.8 million for PMA clients in exchange for a donation of $54,000, arranged an earmark of $2 million for Parametric Technology in exchange for a donation of $3,500 and arranged an earmark for $800,000 for ABT Associates in exchange for a donation of $1,250. (Source: Seattle Times Favor Factory Investigation)

Massachusetts Congressman Frank - According to Judicial Watch, Frank allegedly used his influence to secure a $12 Million infusion for a hometown bank that did not qualify based upon TARP program legal criteria. Additionally, Frank was a knowing and key contributor according to Judicial Watch to the housing and financial crisis of 2008 through his dogged support of Fannie Mae risky loan practices, a company that funneled more than $40,000 to his campaign funds and a company where his life partner worked as an executive. (Source: www.businessandmedia.org.

Massachusetts Congressman Markey - According to www.TheHill.com, Markey requested federal regulatory investigations against a CEO and his company immediately after the man's testimony indicated that Markey's cap-and-trade bill would result in burdensome cost to citizens with little to no change or benefit in emissions.

New Jersey Congressman Pascrell - Arranged a $4 million earmark in exchange for a donation of $2,000. (Source: Seattle Times)

New Jersey Congressman Rothman - Arranged earmarks worth $3.2 for PMA clients in exchange for a donation of $4,000 and arranged an earmark of $4 million to ITT in exchange for a donation of $17,000. (Source: Seattle Times)

Ohio Congresswoman Kaptur - Kaptur doesn't even try to pretend she is helping her district. She arranges earmarks for donating companies from other states. The Seattle Times reports two such in Virginia. American Systems Corp and Impact Engineering each received generous taxpayer earmark gifts from Kaptur of $4 Million after donating $15,000 and $3500 respectively to Kaptur's re-election campaigns. According to www.FreeRepublic.com, Kaptur also involved herself in the PMA scandal by earmarking $1.6 Million for their clients after receipt of PMA lobbying donations of $34,500.

Ohio Congressman Turner - According to the Wall Street Journal, Turner spent $1435 of taxpayer dollars on a digital camera. Yes, small potatoes compared to others in the house but abuse is abuse.

Tennessee Congressman Wamp - Arranged an earmark of $2.8 million for PMA clients in exchange for a donation of $23,900 and arranged an earmark of $1.52 million for Radiance Technologies in exchange for a donation of $5,000. (Source: Seattle Times)

West Virginia Congressman Mollohan - According to NLPC, Mollohan appropriated well over $100,000,000 in taxpayer funds through earmarks for non-profits that he set up and staffed with friends.

A few observations:

  • Tomorrow we will have some fun with the data and analyze who got the most for their money in this Let's Make A Deal! charade but it amazes me how much our politicians are willing to give up, of our taxpayer money, for just a few thousand dollars back for their re-election campaign. Of course, if the principles from "Love My Country, Loathe My Government" were in play, none of this would happen since Step 6 would allow only individual American citizens to contribute to political campaigns and would bar lobbyists, companies, unions and PACs from contributing.
  • The height of gall is people like Congresswoman Kaptur who is willing to grant earmark money to companies that have nothing to do with her Congressional district. Why should outside money be used to influence a local election? Only those people who live in a district should be allowed to contribute to a Congressional campaign, Step 7 from "Love My Country, Loathe My Government."
  • When the Republicans controlled Congress and the White House, they suffered serious political pain and some actual criminal convictions when they got entangled with lobbyist Jack Abramoff. More than once in the history of this blog, has the lobbying firm PMA been mentioned in additional to their heavy involvement with the above examples. Thus, different party, different lobbying firm but the same results: the American taxpayer gets screwed, proving my point that there really is not a major difference between the two major parties, they are all part of the same political class. I predict that many Democrats will eventually feel the same political and criminal heat of dealing with PMA that many Republicans felt by dealing with Abramoff.
  • The impact of this kind of shenanigans goes much further than a few million dollar earmarks. It is public knowledge that the Democrats continually stonewalled the Bush administration's attempts to get Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac under control before the real estate market imploded. As mentioned above, Fannie Mae was a big contributor to Congressman Franks (and also to Democratic Senators Dodd and Obama), forestalling any attempts to get the housing lending industry under control. We all know what happened: housing collapsed and took the economy with it. Thus, we are not just wasting taxpayer money, we are endangering the economic health of the entire nation with these kinds of arrangements between politicians and companies.

There is no doubt in my mind that all incumbents need to be ousted in the fall and those that take their place be made aware of why they won and how quickly they could also be removed. To continue with the current set of Washington politicians is to stagnate and die a death of a thousand cuts, one earmark and misuse of government funds at a time.

Equal Opportunity and Congressional Membership

One thing that always confounded me was how Congressional members always seem to get re-elected even though as a group, America does not think very highly of the group. In a December, 2009 Gallup poll, only 25% of respondents approved of the job Congress was doing, implying that three out of four Americans do not think Congress is dong a satisfactory job. In a Rasmussen poll in 2008, 59% of the respondents said that would vote to throw out all sitting members of Congress if given the opportunity while only 23% said they thought the current Congress could solve the issues facing the nation.

Dan Gilgoff, writing for US News And World Report in May, 2006, cited the following statistics in his article, "A Fake Democracy":
  • In 2004, 98% of incumbents won their elections.
  • Less than 8% of the Congressional elections in 2004 were competitive, i.e. the final results for the losers and winners were within a few percentage points of each other.
  • In 2004, incumbent candidates received 83% of the money donated to all campaigns.

Thus, it is pretty obvious that no one likes Congress but Congressional members always seem to get re-elected. Why is that? I have a few theories, some of which Mr. Gilgoff explored in his article:

  • Congressional redistricting has become more and more precise in targeting and configuring geographic areas to favor incumbents. As an example, the political class in New Jersey has configured that state so that it would be almost impossible for the Democrats not to have seven House seats and Republicans to have six House seats. District 5 in New Jersey starts in the far northeast corner of the state, runs along the top of the state, makes a left turn at the upper most northwest corner of the state and heads down the western border for about a third of the state's length, a classic boomerang shape. The political class wanted a Republican district and this was a contorted way of getting it. The Democratic districts in the state are also contorted configurations to ensure that incumbents will have a strong base and minimizing any challenges to their Congressional seat.
  • As we have reviewed in previous posts, the number of individual earmarks and pork projects in each Federal budget has grown from just over a 1,000 a few years ago to over 10,000 in the latest budget bills. This growth has happened despite the Obama campaign pledge to get back to the 1,000 level. Earmarks allow incumbents to spend tax dollars on wasteful local projects that should be funded by the state or local government entities. The incumbents can then highlight how much money they stole from other states' citizens and directed to their own districts or states. While the country suffers by expending resources on silly local projects, sitting politicians can brag about how great they are by "bringing home the bacon." The implication to voters is if they were not re-elected, that flow of money would stop.
  • Last week we talked about a report on how 60% of the House members on the Armed Forces Appropriations Committee received campaign contributions directly from companies who were granted Defense Department earmarks directly by those House members. Basically, significant campaign contributions can be bought by sitting politicians by inefficiently spending taxpayer dollars on wasteful projects.

Thus, once elected to office, the incumbents can control the reelection process by controlling the redistricting process, spending untold billions on wasteful local projects, and buying campaign contributions by directing taxpayer money to friendly companies, who in turn get to do unnecessary work but who contribute heavily to ensure the incumbents are reelected.

As a result of these shenanigans, we get a poorly performing Congress that wastes billions of dollars and resources on creating the earmarks and pork, and which block fresh blood and ideas from getting into the decision making process. Consider the following Congressional profile information (sources: U.S./ Census and www.thisnation.com):

  • While 66% of the nation is Caucasian, 83% of the House and 81% of the Senate is Caucasian.
  • While 14% of the nation is African-American, only 10% of the House and 1% of the Senate is African-American.
  • While 15% of the nation is Hispanic, only 6% of the House and 2% of the Senate is Hispanic.
  • While just less than half of the nation is male, about 83% of both the House and the Senate are male. Furthermore, 100% of the longest serving members of Congress are male. All of the longest serving Congressional members have served for at least 37 years.

Now, this is not to say that a Caucasian male could not adequately represent a Hispanic Congressional district for example. However, the current makeup of Congress suggests that we may not have a representative government at all. Could it be that by rigging districts, controlling taxpayer dollars, generating thousands of earmarks, etc., that we have a Congress that is now atrophying and is devoid of solutions? We seem to think so, as measured by the polls, but are not able to make the changes necessary to inject new blood into the political process.

"Love My Country, Loathe My Government" would help break up this atrophy with the following steps:

  • Step 6 - allow only individual Americans to contribute to election campaigns, barring companies, unions, PACs, lobbyists and all other non-individual entities from contributing.
  • Step 8 - Strengthen and change the structure of the Federal Elections Commission to ensure that Step 6 and other election laws are strictly enforced.
  • Step 14 - stop reconfiguring Congressional districts to almost guarantee the reelection of incumbents.
  • Step 34 - remove Congressional members from committee and subcommittee posts for malfunctioning parts of government that those committees and subcommittees are responsible for.
  • Step 39 - institute term limits for House and Senate members. If the President, the most important political figure in the country (and world) has term limits, than the less important Congressional seats should also have term limits.
  • Step 45 - hold Congress to the same laws, principles, penalties and fines as the rest of the country as it pertains to equal opportunity, affirmative action and representation in the workplace, namely the floor of Congress.

Until we enact some or all of these steps, we will be saddled with a low performing, atrophied Congress who we despise but which we cannot get rid of.
