By The Numbers: Wasting Money On Washignton Rugs and Other Office Equipment, Americans are In A Pessimistic Economic Mood, and Congressional Members Continue To Waste Money

On a periodic basis we do some posts that fall under the theme of “by the numbers.” Rather than trust what American politicians tell us about reality, we like to examine the real numbers and the real reality in the world to understand what is actually going on.

Relying on politicians, and their cohorts in the media, to tell us what is reality is always a sucker bet. They have their own agendas and goals, usually centering around their needs and self-enrichment. So we need to look at the reality of the numbers to determine what is really going on. Previous analyses of “by the numbers” can be accessed by entering the phrase in the search box above.

1)The Federal government spends a lot of money. Unfortunately, as we have pointed out far too many times in this blog, it also wastes a lot of money:

  • According to reporting by the Washington Free Beacon, the White House “slightly” overpaid for a plain, beige area rug it recently purchased.

  • The 12 foot by 9 foot rug was purchased for $2,735 back in October.

  • The cost of the rug was a whopping $1,972 but outrageous delivery and padding costs increased the overall cost by almost $800.

  • The Beacon news report checked out the manufacturer and style with a rug retailer who says they could have gotten the exact same rug for about $1,600, a price that includes shipping and padding.

  • Thus, the White House paid a markup of over 70%.

  • Other carpet companies checked out by the Beacon said that this type of rug by this manufacturer should cost about $10-$13 per square foot or $1,000 to $1,300.

Look, the world is not going to end because the White house overpaid by 70% for a simple rug. The problem is that the Federal government does this all the time, as we have previously discussed, which probably results in billions and billions of taxpayer dollars wasted over the years on overpriced or unneeded or kickback induced, bloated purchases. And no one ever gets called onto the “carpet” for this wasteful spending.

2) To expand on our previous point, the Washington Free Beacon has also uncovered some other ridiculous government purchases:

  • In January they reported that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence spent $12,134 on four office chairs, or about $3,000 per chair.

  • A quick search of the Staples website shows that the most expensive office chair offered by Staples can be had for $911, about one third the cost of these chairs and that Staples has dozens and dozens of office chairs that have high ratings and cost less than $500 each.

  • Back in October the paper reported that Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, spent over $2,000 for ONE pair of drapes for his office drapes that the reporter called “uninspiring.”

  • Back during the Obama administration, the government spent $52,000 on curtains for the Manhattan residence of the ambassador to the United Nations, not for the office of the ambassador, but for the home of the ambassador.

No wonder we have a Federal government that has a national debt of $30,000,0000,000,000 when those in power in Washington continue this type of unnecessary and wasteful spending. The numbers do not lie and the numbers keep on coming when it comes to waste.

3) While wasteful spending by the Federal government continues to rise, overall consumer sentiment and dissatisfaction with the Biden administration continues to decline:

  • Consumer sentiment dropped to the worst level since 2011 and 2022 inflation expectations rose to a 41 year high.

  • The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index dropped to 59.7 in March from 62.8 in February.

  • This is in contrast to the sentiment number a year ago which was 84.9 and thus, has dropped a whopping 25 points in only 12 months.

  • Consumers expect prices to rise 5.4% in 2022.

  • In addition, the Department of Labor reported that the consumer price index soared 7.9% over the past 12 months and jumped a large .8% in just one month.

  • “Consumers held very negative prospects for the economy, with the sole exception of the job market,” said Richard Curtin.

  • The highest-ever share of households expect their finances to worsen in the coming year with the gauge of future expectations declined to 54.4, the weakest level since 2011.

Not a pretty picture being painted by these numbers. Americans are pessimistic and not happy and most of that blame lies at the feet of the Washington ruling class and the inept Biden administration.

4) One of the biggest improvements we suggested in our book, “Love My Country, Loathe My Government” was the principle that the Federal government could not spend any Federal tax money on any project that did not significantly benefit at least five states. For example, if New York state wanted to build a bridge inside the state, the Federal government would be prohibited from paying for any portion of that construction, it would be the responsibility of that state’s taxpayers to build that bridge that only they would benefit from.

This principle would then really reduce excessive and wasteful Federal government spending and eliminate the reality that the most powerful, most senior members of Congress could no longer use Federal taxpayer money to the benefit of only their constituents at the expense of the rest of the country and to polish up their reelection chances.

Unfortunately, that principle was never put into place and we are again faced with the annual Federal budget madness that spends taxpayer money on local projects that local residents should be paying for as illustrated in the recent so-called Omnibus spending legislation:

  • The list of pet projects in the legislation spans a mind boggling 367 pages.

  • Senate Majority Chuck Schumer leader is the leader in this wasteful spending with well over 140 Federally financed projects in this budget legislation for his state of New York, all geared for his state residents and funded by the rest of the country.

  • Senator Patrick Leahy got 79 of his projects into the legislation at a cost of $162 million Federal taxpayer dollars.

  • Senator Joe Manchin has at least 32 projects costing almost $50 million.

  • Senator Catherine is in for $38 million of Federal taxpayer funding for her state.

  • “It’s totally pork-barreling,” said Thomas Schatz, the president of Citizens Against Government Waste. "For at least some of them, we can see which member of Congress has requested the earmark and do further investigation into where it is, what it’s doing, who it’s for”

Let's be honest, this is just Federal overreach perpetrated by incumbent politicians who want to show their voters how good they are at shaking down the rest of the country’s taxpayers. If a local government or state government needs local or state funds, let the taxpayers in those areas pay for it. If they do not want to pay for it, then the rest of the country should not step in and wastefully spend one something that the local voter base is not willing to step up to.

The current system is not fair and equitable: it is based on Congressional seniority and power, the more powerful get more Federal taxpayer funding no matter how stupid or trivial the local project is.

Another depressing set of numbers, courtesy of the American political class: Washington bureaucracies continue to overpay and waste taxpayer money on even the most trivial purchases, consumers and voters are not happy and are very pessimistic about the economic situation and trend in the country, and Washington politicians continues to skim Federal taxpayer dollars for their own voters at the expense of the rest of the country for the sole purpose of helping themselves get reelected.

The numbers don't lie but politicians do.

February, 2014 Political Class Insanity, Part 1: Coffee Enemas, Penis Pumps, Bowling For Kids, and Other Politcal Class Nonsense

Well, it is another month which means its time for the latest chapter on political class insanity. We do this feature every month because every month the American political class finds new ways to insult us in ways ranging from incompetent government operations to inept legislation that never resolve any problems to wasteful government spending and other embarrassments.

When we started this feature several years ago, we could usually contain the monthly insanity to one post. However, over time, the insanity level seems to have increased exponentially, reflecting the growing ineptness of politicians everywhere. Thus, as has been the recent trend, we will probably need six or seven days to get through everything again this month.

1) On January 12, 2014, the Washington Examiner reported on how the Washington political class has rigged the Federal government’s farm subsidy giveaways so that many very affluent Washington power brokers, politicians, lobbyists, etc. now enhance their high annual incomes with taxpayer funded subsidies for farms they do not farm.

Details of this legal scam, according to the Examiner analysis and reporting, include the following:
  • Thousands of residents in and around Washington D.C. receive millions of dollars every year in Federal farm subsidies even though there are very few farms within the Washington metro area.
  • In nearby Chevy Chase, Md., one of the nation's wealthiest communities, lawyers, lobbyists and at least one psychologist collected nearly $342,000 in taxpayer farm subsidies between 2008 and 2011, according to the watchdog group, Open the Books.
  • Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack continues to receive government subsides even though he has overseen the agency that pays them since 2009, even though he is in Washington in government service and not back working the farm, a clear conflict of interest.
  • Billions of dollars once spent to keep small family farms from going under now go mostly to large agriculture corporations like Monsanto and Archer Daniels Midland, and to wealthy landowners who have never farmed.
  • Over just the past four years, taxpayers have sent over $30 million to residents New York City, and Chicago, hardly farming meccas by any stretch of the imagination, to compensate them for converting farmland to conservation areas and for growing soybeans, cotton, corn, rice and other crops.
  • Apparently the scam is for these rich big city residents to buy farm land, hire a farm manager and collect a check from the Federal government.
  • Van Boyette, a lobbyist living in Washington's wealthy Palisades neighborhood, received $186,761 in Federal farm subsidies between 2004 and 2012 for growing corn, soybeans and other crops, and for land conservation on farmland he owns in six different Iowa counties.
  • Gerald Cassidy, one of Washington's top and richest lobbyists, got $41,000 in farming subsidies since 1995 for a farm he owns in Dorchester County, Maryland.
  • U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa has proposed capping Federal payments to $250,000 per couple per year, likely because he also receives money from the subsidy trough.
  • His obscenely high cap is about five times the median income of an average U.S. household.
Rich people and rich companies, including those in government, getting wealthier via a government program that is obviously a misdirected government program,  funded with taxpayer wealth. Pathetic.

2) The Associated Press reported on January 21, 2014 that former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife had been indicted in late January on Federal corruption charges. They are accused of accepting tens of thousands of dollars in loans, shopping sprees, money for their daughter's wedding, and even a joyride in a Ferrara.

Although innocent until proven guilty, maybe the former governor should have bought a farm in order to legalize his corruption via the farm subsidy program that we led off this post with. Bad planning on his part to go the illegal corruption route when he could have gone the legal corruption route like so many of his political peers are using.

3) Let’s stay with our corruption theme, looking at some data from the New York Times and U.S. government that was reproduced by the Against Crony Capitalism website on January 24, 2014. The data and their chart depicted the number of criminal convictions for corruption by state or other legal U.S. entity (e.g. Guam. Virgin Islands, D.C. and Puerto Rico) per capita.

46 out of the 54 entities included in the analysis had a per capital corruption conviction rate less than seven convictions per million residents. The entity with the highest per capital corruption conviction rate was, no surprise, Washington D.C. Their per capita calculation came out to over 66 corruption convictions per million people, nine times higher than the conviction rate of 46 other states and other legal entities. Nine times higher, that is a lot of corruption.

4) A Business Insider article from January 24, 2014 had some interesting statistics from International Centre For Prison studies. It seems that the United States has more of its citizens in prison than any other country in the world. About 2.3 million people are now residing in U.S. prisons. China, which has been framed as a much more totalitarian government, has about 1.6 million people locked away in its prisons even thought its population is about four times larger than ours.

The main reason for this dubious worldwide honor? According to the article and the Centre, the U.S.’s war on drugs has resulted in prison populations growing exponentially with low level dealers or recreational users of illegal drugs, a problem that much of the rest of the world does not seem to have. Despite this problem, and the extraordinary expenses that come with it, the American political class seems to be in no hurry to fix what has been a losing and expensive war on drugs for the past four decades.

5) The wasteful and idiotic spending by the Federal government is not restricted to just a handful of government entities. Consider some recent news reports on how the Health and Human Services (HHS) department has been wasting taxpayer wealth over the past few years:
  • According to an article from the Washington Free Beacon on January 13, 2014, from 2006-2011, HHS spent almost $175 million on penis pumps, according to a recent HHS Inspector General report.
  • Adding insult to injury, HHS paid more than double the retail price for the pumps, with the Inspector General saying that the prices HHS paid “remain grossly excessive compared with the amounts that non-Medicare payers pay,”
  • According to an article from the Fiscal Times from January 15, 2014, in 2013 alone HHS wasted almost $56 billion on improper payments that never should have been made in seven of HHS’s programs that were examined. This rate of wasteful spending is enough to have given every U.S. household an almost $500 tax rebate.
Pitiful disregard and disrespect for taxpayer wealth.

5) But the Federal government is not the only government entity that wastes taxpayer money while remaining incompetent. Consider a report from January 15, 2014 that was put out by the EAG Foundation:
  • In Camden, New Jersey, the student to teacher ratio is an excellent and low 14 to 1 in its public schools.
  • In addition, Camden on average spends over $26,000 a year per student, much higher than the state and national average.
  • Despite that stellar ratio and large budget, Camden’s public school graduation rate is less than 50%.
  • Only three Camden high school seniors who took the SAT test would be considered college ready.
  • About 75% of Camden’s third grade students have already fallen behind the levels they should be at for reading and math proficiency.
  • Despite these horrible academic results, the Camden school budget recently included an expense of $24,000 that was used to take students on out of school trips to bowling alleys and skating rinks.
Wasteful spending and low performance and quality, sounds about right for any U.S. government entity.

6) The wonderful website, Bankrupting America, had some great examples of past Federal government spending idiocy in its January 15, 2014 posting analyzing the latest trillion dollar omnibus spending agreement:
  • Based on the results of a $374,000 taxpayer-funded grant, we now know that inhaling lemon and lavender scents doesn’t do a thing to increase our ability to heal a wound.
  • $666,000 in taxpayer wealth was used by scientists to determine whether distant prayer could heal AIDS. They found out after spending the $660,000 that it could not heal anything.
  • The Federal National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine paid scientists $406,000 to study whether squirting brewed coffee into someone’s intestines was beneficial in treating pancreatic cancer. But alas, pancreatic cancer is imperious to coffee enemas.
  • The center also paid out a whopping $1.25 million to determine whether or not massage sessions makes people with advanced cancer feel better. They found out that the massage did, something I could have told them for far less than $1.25 million.
This is how we got to a national debt hole of over $17 TRILLION, wasteful spending on coffee enemas, remote prayer healing, inhaling lemon scents, bowling trips for undereducated kids, overpaying for penis pumps, and politician corruption. But we are just getting starting, the well of political class insanity is endless and we will dive into that well again tomorrow.

Another 1,900 Reasons Why No American, Rich Or Poor, Should Pay An Additional Penny In Taxes

Many times in this blog we have successfully, forcefully, and mathematically made the case that no American, rich or poor, should be an extra penny in Federal taxes because of the rampant waste inefficiency, and criminal fraud currently going on in every Federal entity:
  • Medicare and Medicaid lose anywhere from $110 to $150 billion a year to waste and criminal activity.
  • Social Security loses about $125 billion a year to waste and criminal activity.
  • The IRS admits that it fails to collect about $385 billion a year from tax evaders who do not pay their fair share of taxes.
  • Federal unemployment and food stamp programs lose about $25 billion a year to waste and criminal activity.
  • Multiple, overlapping, and inefficient Federal programs in a wide range of areas (job training, teacher training, food safety, etc.) wastes tens of billions of dollars every year without any discernible taxpayer benefits.
  • Over staffed, over paid, and excessive benefits to Federal workers and politicians waste tens of billions of dollars every year.
  • Unnecessary and expensive deployments of U.S. troops around the world waste tens of billions of dollars every year.
The list goes on and on, with the following examples of other government waste just a small sample:

That is why no American should be forced to give up any more of their wealth, the Federal government and the politicians that operate it will just end up wasting the additional tax revenue like they do with the current tax revenue they collect.

In addition, according to a recent, October 22, 2012 article from the Washington Guardian, there are at least another 1,900 reasons why American should not pay any more in taxes than they currently do:
  • According to the article, the Federal government has about 1,900 investigations underway into the misspending and criminal fraud involved with the Economic Stimulus program.
  • These 1,900 investigations have already resulted in the arrest of over 600 people according to an online Federal government Internet post in September.
  • Since that online blog post, several Federal inspectors generals have announced new convictions, prosecutions, or audits, a sign that some of the investigations are growing closer to decisions and actions.
  • Federal investigators have already identified over $11 billion of waste taxpayer money and with 1,900 investigations underway, that number is expected “to balloon in the coming months.”
  • For example, the Energy Department inspector general announced in mid-October that it had found that the California energy commission collected two duplicate payments under the stimulus program that cost taxpayers $678,000.
  • The Health and Human Services inspector general recently found that a Louisiana group which had gotten funds for Head Start programs for children had inappropriately spent nearly $1.2 million in Federal funds to constrict a new building that was not approved by Federal officials, a conclusion the group is contesting.
  • The Energy Department inspector general warned in its recent semiannual report that the Western Area Power Administration, which received $3.25 billion in borrowing authority to help build transmission lines under the stimulus program, is at risk of losing significant money on a transmission project for wind power in Montana that it funded.
  • A former superintendent of a Montana construction company was charged last month with making false statements regarding the quality of work his firm performed on a Federal bridge project in Idaho, a project that was funded with $21.6 million in stimulus money.
  • Federal inspectors and auditors discovered that veterans seeking stimulus related benefits had claimed more than 16,000 dependents with Social Security numbers matching those of dead people.
  • Other audits found more than 150 potential shell companies may have improperly received Recovery funds set aside just for the Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business program.
  • The audits also identified more than four hundred recipients of stimulus funds, from 15 different Federal agencies, who had previously been terminated for default, most getting the money after falsely certifying they had not been terminated for default.
There are about 1,900 more cases of potential fraud and waste that inspector generals, auditors, and eventually prosecutors will be going through in the coming months and years. Given that the Economic Stimulus failed miserably in attaining its stated goal of reducing unemployment to well under 6% and never allowing it to exceed 8%, these examples of fraud and wasteful, criminal spending just add insult to injury when it comes to taxpayer wealth.

But wait, there’s more! Recent government waste is not restricted only to stimulus funding. Consider these recently reported, totally unnecessary, wasteful expenditures of taxpayer money that went to vain, selfish top level government bureaucrats. Keep in mind that these expenses were incurred while 23 million Americans are unemployed or under employed and our national debt is now well over $16 TRILLION (these findings were posted at the Against Crony Capitalism website as reported by the Washington Times):
  • The Environmental Protection Agency recently spent nearly $40,000 on a portrait of EPA top administrator Lisa P. Jackson.
  • A painting of Air Force Secretary Michael B. Donley will cost $41,200, according to Federal purchasing records.
  • The price tag for a 3-by-4-foot oil portrait of Agriculture Department Secretary Thomas J. Vilsack will cost taxpayers $22,500. A 3 feet by 4 feet portrait, really? Talk about excessive spending and vanity.
  • In total, the government has paid out at least $180,000 for official portraits just in the past year, based on an analysis of Federal expense records by The Washington Times of Federal agencies and military offices across government.
These are Federal bureaucrats. They have not saved people’s lives by running into a burning building. They have not heroically saved their fellow comrades lives in combat. They have not come up with a cure for cancer. They are not outstanding teachers making life long positive impacts on kids’ lives. Given how ineffective every Federal entity is, they have obviously not turned their respective organizations into a finely tuned, efficient government organization.

They are hum drum, short term, Federal bureaucrats who will be in their current jobs for only a few years. But that does not stop them from using taxpayer money to feed their egos and vanity to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars a year just to get their portrait painted.

Wasteful spending. Criminal fraud. Vanity expenses. Yes, no American, rich or poor, should have to pay another penny in taxes until these and a myriad of other atrocities of wasted taxpayer wealth are addressed and eliminated.
