September, 2019, Part 3,Political Class Insanity: American Taxpayers Funding Abortions Worldwide, Abandoning Decaying American Cities, and Wasteful DC Spending Abounds

It is another month which means it is again time to review the latest political class insanity from Washington and around the world. Political class insanity takes many forms including the wasting of taxpayer wealth, criminal fraud within government programs, inane and stupid political quotes and actions, the inability to create and implement effective and efficient government programs, stupid and ill performing economic policies and strategies, and other forms of insanity that continue to evolve and surprise and shock us.

Let’s get started:

1) Let’s review a few American realities of today:

• Just in Los Angeles and San Francisco there are about 90,000 homeless Americans roaming the streets.
• Across the country there are over half a million homeless Americans.
• About 70,000 American die from drug overdoses every year.
• About 12 million American kids live in a “food insecure home,” i.e. there is no certainty where their next meal is coming from.

Given the dire straits of these American citizens, one would hope that the politicians in this country would be doing everything possible, using all of their resources, to help these folks in this country who are in need.

But of course your hope would be wasted on these people, since according to a September 3, 2019 Newsmax article by Brian Freeman:

• Seven Democratic Presidential candidates have come out in favor of changing current Federal law and using American taxpayer money to fund abortions around the world.
• The so-called Helms amendment form 1973 current says that "no foreign assistance funds may be used to pay for the performance of abortion as a method of family planning or to motivate or coerce any person to practice abortions."
• Thus, for these seven candidates to get their wish, the current laws would have to be changed at the Federal level.
• These fools are out of step with the vast majority of Americans since according to a Marist from earlier this year, a whopping 75% of Americans oppose funding abortions around the world with U.S. taxpayer money.

So crazy, these folks want to be President but do not read the pulse of America on this issue, just plain stupidity. Second, if you asked every American the top fifty issues on their mind and in their worries. Do we even think that funding abortions around the world cracks the top ten issues, the top 30, the top 50? I doubt it.

And worse of all, wouldn’t the millions and millions of dollars being sent overseas to fund abortions be better spent sheltering, feeding and treating Americans in need? Insanity.

2) We have often talked about how badly some major cities are being run in this country,which, by the way are all run by Democrats today and have been run by Democrats for decades. Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Detroit, San Francisco, etc. are overrun with drug addicts, homeless folks, violent crime, and general filth.

Los Angeles, for example, has almost 60,000 homeless Americans wandering the streets. This has resulted in a public health crisis since the garbage in the streets and raw human sewage has led to a boom in the rat population and the fear that Medieval diseases such as typhus and the bubonic plague might reappear in current day American streets. 

In San Francisco, it is not against the law to defecate, urinate, or shoot up drugs in public places. In fact, the city government has a full time staff of five employees whose sole job is to go around the city streets to pick up human excrement.

Thus, we should not be surprised when Yahoo reports: “Scores of people are leaving the New York City area behind every day. New York leads all U.S. metro areas as the largest net loser with 277 people moving every day — more than double the exodus of 132 just one year ago. Los Angeles and Chicago were next with triple digit daily losses of 201 and 161 residents, respectively.”

Thus, at this rate, NYC is losing 100,000 people in net population every year. LA is losing over 70,000 a year. And the trend is not good. Maybe if Democrats cared a little bit more about American cities and not abortions around the world these once great American cities would not be the cesspools they are today.

3) We are going to finish up today’s political insanity with the beginning of a multi part discussion of plain old government waste. Senator Rand Paul recently issued the annual government “Waste Report” and the wasteful spending of DC politicians continues unabated. As you read how politicians are wasting your tax dollars keep in mind the suffering of the millions of Americans we pointed out above and imagine how much better suffering Americans’ lives would be if the Federal government was not wasting money on some of the following idiocies:

• Just on the government Paul looked at and analyzed, the Federal government easily wasted $50 billion on stupidity.
• One of the reasons why we have a nation debt load at $22.5 TRILLION is because politicians in DC over the decades have spent on money idiotic and unneeded projects and programs.
• This $22.5 TRILLION comes out to about $180,000 for every taxpayer, i.e. every taxpayer would have to pay $180,000 EACH to eliminate this debt.
• And 2019 will be no better since this year’s budget deficit is expected to be about $1 TRILLION which means the debt in a single year grew almost 5% while the overall economy is growing at maybe a little more than half of that.
• Example of wasteful spending number 1 - the State Department is spending almost $2 million to “to strengthen democratic institutions and processes in Tunisia by increasing trust between political parties and citizens.” First of all I doubt $2million is going to make much of a difference and second of all, why are we doing this? There is very little trust between our own political parties and citizens in this country and the government is off trying to fix this problem not here but thousands of miles away. Oh, by the way, we have already spent $1.4 billion in Tunisia already so what’s another $2 million or so?
• Example of wasteful spending number 2 - The General Services Administration (GSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have been working and have already spent about $2 billion to convert some of the abandoned St. Elizabeth's Hospital property in Washington, D.C. into a new headquarters for the DHS. This project has been going on since 2005 and is still not done. Which should not be a surprise since the buildings are over 160 years old and rather than build a new, modern, efficient building the problems with the old buildings renovations have been very costly. . since 2005. But, of course, problems tend to arise when you are working with a historical site built in 1855. After 14 years and billions of dollars these idiots decided to quit renovating many of these dilapidated buildings and go in another direction. But now the estimated completion date for the DHS headquarters is 2026 and even if they hit that target the project would have taken 21 years to complete.
• Example of wasteful spending number 3 - Medicare paid out a whopping $582 billion in 2018 and probably at least $48 billion of that was bogus, either through inefficiencies or criminal fraud. But this should not be a surprise since Medicare has been designated a “High Risk Program” for the past 29 years but the DC political class has never fixed it.

Millions of hungry, homeless, and drug addicted Americans and these buffoons are sending billions of dollars to Tunisia and other countries around the world for no tangible purpose for America, mismanaging simple construction projects, and losing tens of billions of dollars a year from a program they know has been busted for three decades. Add in the funding of abortions around the world and doing nothing about our decaying cities and it is a good day, in a bad way, for political class insanity. 

More insanity to come with many more examples of wasteful Federal government spending.

July, 2016, Part 4, Political Class Insanity: Wasting Taxpayer Money in Tunisia and Iceland, More Dead in Chicago, and More

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc. In fact, last month we set a record, needing ten full posts to cover it all.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

It looks like our politicians have been especially insane over the past month or so let’s continue with the latest insanity from today’s American politicians:

1) The ways that the Washington political class can waste taxpayer money never ceases to amaze us. THE MRCTV website recently reported on just another screwball, useless waste of taxpayer wealth. Brittany Hughes reported on June 29, 2016 that the Federal government spent $39,000 to study Syrian refugees...in Iceland. You cannot make this stuff up.

The Federal government gave almost $39,000 to the San Jose State University Foundation to study and research the resettlement of Syrian refugees in Iceland. The Federal entity responsible for this atrocity is the National Science Foundation, an entity that we have discussed numerous times in this blog for their insanely stupid use of taxpayer money. For a list of previous posts regarding National Science Foundation’s wasteful projects, type “national science foundation” in the search box above.

The formal objective of the effort reads as follows: “In early 2016, Iceland received Syrian refugee families and placed them in three Icelandic communities. Now is an exceptional time to examine Iceland's reaction and capacity to address forced migration into the Arctic…There is great potential in Iceland to serve as a global model as it determines policies, procedures, and communications among the stakeholders for developing best-practices for addressing the challenges of refugees and forced migration. Providing culturally effective services to a population that continuously changes in country of origin, language needs, health and mental health needs, and cultural experiences will be a significant problem for service providers around the world. Knowledge gained through this research has the potential to provide critical insights other nations facing similar crises.”

There are two ways this is such an idiotic waste of money:

1. First of all, this studies the stories of Syrians settling in Iceland, a land that is completely different than the United States from a cultural, religion, language, laws, and societal perspective. To think that anything learned about this Iceland experience is transferable to the United States is ridiculous.
2. Second, the round trip flight for two researchers to fly from California to Iceland would be over $4,000. This would consume more than 10% of the entire budget from the grant. Add in hotel reservations and other travel expenses and I would estimate that 15-20% of the entire budget would be spent just on travel expenses. The point here is what kind of good data are you going to get on a mere $39,000? None, all you did is provide some free vacation money for some college researchers who did not get enough resources to do any kind of decent research which even if it was good research, it would not be applicable to our problems with refugees.

2) Unfortunately, we often come back to this next topic but it is news even if the Obama-friendly mainstream media does not cover it. Chicago has some of the toughest gun laws in the country. In the Obama and liberal mindset, this is a good thing since it should greatly reduce gun violence and crime. In reality, their mindset could not be any further from the truth.

According to MRCTV, in a recent Chicago two day weekend, seven Chicagoans were killed and 35 were wounded by gunfire. Those killed included a 17 year old boy and those wounded included a five year old girl. As the Chicago gun laws get stiffer, more and more citizens are left defenseless while criminals, gangs, and drug cartels ignore any and all gun laws. Why is that relationship so hard for people like Obama to understand? They are criminals, by definition, criminals do not obey laws, that is why they are criminals. 

And as time goes by, the Obama administration and the rest of the political class refuse to acknowledge and work on the root causes of the violence. The political class has been fighting and losing the war on drugs for decades but still insist on doing the same thing over and over which does not reduce drug addiction but does give rise to violent drug cartels and gangs. And the economic malaise that the current administration has caused to infect much of the country prevents people from lifting themselves out of poverty and the crime that usually follows poverty. 

But typical politicians, working on either the wrong solution to the right problem or the right solution to the wrong problem.

3) Let’s talk about another major foreign affairs failure of the current administration. Despite the deaths and wounding of thousands of Americans troops and probably the expenditure of over a trillion dollars of taxpayer wealth, according to Military Times article that was summarized in the July 1, 2016 issue of The Week magazine, the Taliban in Afghanistan now control more areas of the country than at any point since 2001 when the Taliban government was overthrown by a U.S.-led military campaign. Afghan government troops have suffered a 28% increase in battle fatalities over the past year. 

Thousands of U.S. wounded and dead, a trillion dollars expended, and we are no better off than where we were fifteen years ago. An epic fail of historic proportions.

4) Let’s stay with failed U.S. foreign policy. According to an article in the July 1m 2016 issue of The Week magazine, the United Nations estimates that a whopping 63.5 million people were displaced just in the past year, the largest refugee count since the end of World War II. 

Much of that displacement happened in the Middle East where 1) the terrorist group ISIS, that Obama once classified as the JV team of the terrorism world, has had much success in rampaging through large swaths of Syria and Iraq with little resistance; since Obama and the rest of the world have never had a plan to defeat to defeat ISIS, world setting refugee records should not be a surprise and 2) Obama and Clinton launched an illegal and un-Constitutional war to topple the government of Libya, leaving a void that terrorists quickly filled which caused untold thousands of Libyans to become refugees.

Ramsey Clark once said: “The greatest crime since World War II has been U.S. foreign policy.” That crime has continued under both the Bush and Obama administrations.

5) One last piece of insanity for today. Obama has constantly railed against anyone who says that we need to secure our southern border with Mexico. Surely those that want to make it more difficult for illegal drugs, drug cartel personnel, human traffickers, and illegal immigrant to cross into this country simply do not understand our history of immigration or are out and out racists. 

And yet...and yet, the Obama administration, via its State Department outpost in Tunisia announced with little fanfare that the State Department would give the government of Tunisia almost $25 million of taxpayer money to begin building border fortifications and resources to prevent illegal immigration from war torn Libya into Tunisia. The money will be used to install state-of-the-art electronic surveillance systems along the border to improve the existing barriers against illegal immigration and to train the Tunisian security forces on how to use the equipment.

Such hypocrisy. If American taxpayers want to build a wall to protect themselves, they are racists. But the Obama administration has no qualms about other countries building walls and using American taxpayer money to build those walls. 

Even if you are an American who does not want to build a wall along the Mexican border, wouldn’t you agree that spending that $25 million on hungry Americans, drug addicted Americans, American veterans’ sorely needed medical care, homeless Americans, and unemployed Americans is a far better use of American taxpayer wealth than sending it half way around a world for a non-strategic, minor country?

That will do it for today: building walls in foreign countries with American taxpayer money, setting refugee records because of a lousy U.S. foreign policy, losing to the Taliban, wasting taxpayer money in Iceland, and more violence in Chicago. Their insanity is wide and varied and unfortunately, expensive. More insanity tomorrow.

Reason, Egypt, and The Latest Moments Of Political Class Insanity

I received my latest issue of Reason magazine today and thus, thought it would be a good time to review the latest insanity from our political class across a wide variety of topics. Reason magazine is a libertarian thinking publication with great writers who both understand the principles and issues of freedom and liberty and who are smart enough to explain complex issues in easy to understand terms. They provide a refreshing viewpoint based on facts and reality, not based on the political leanings of other journalistic outlets.

One of Reason's best columns is in the beginning of each issue where they document local, national, and international acts of stupidity and insanity from politicians all over the world. The most recent issue includes:

- The Transportation Security Administration instituted "enhanced"security procedures last year which included the installation of new x-ray equipment capable of seeing passengers nude and more invasive pat-downs for secondary screening. These procedures set off a lot of angst and protests, climaxed when air passenger John Tyner spoke his now famous words prior to an aggressive pat down, "If you touch my junk, I'm going to have you arrested." 

The first bit of insanity is that Mr. Tyner was investigated by the Feds and faced a fine $11,000 just because he did not want his body groped. Seems like a reasonable reaction and certainly did not merit Federal authorities going after him.

The second bit of insanity is the fact that the same Federal government responsible for the enhanced security also issued a report, through the Federal Government Accounting Office, that found that the enhanced scanners and pat downs probably would not have prevented the underwear bomber from getting as far as he did on Christmas day in 2009, i.e. over Detroit in an airplane with a bomb that had a faulty ignition device. This averted act of terrorism was the driver behind the scanners and the aggressive pat downs.  Thus, even when the government and political class correctly identify a problem, they cannot get the solution right.

- The Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently issued a report indicating that although the U.S.Congress had appropriated an extra $190 million to the District of Columbia public schools between 2004 and 2009, no one in the D.C. school system could provide an accurate accounting of where the money went after the school system had it. The GAO found that financial records of the $190 million were either incomplete or non-existent, education plans for how the money was to be spent were incomplete, and files that the GAO requested were missing.

A spokesperson for the GAO stated that the D.C. public schools "have long standing problems." You think? It is not easy to lsoe $190 million. Makes you wonder how much other government money gets "lost" from when Congress approves an expense but somebody spends it.

- The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority recently approved a $5.2 billion subway extension. Sounds like a good idea until you look at the numbers and history. As the city historically poured more and more resources into light rail, it raised rates on buses as it cut bus service. Thus, bus ridership went down but the enhanced light rail and subway extensions never picked up ridership. It is likely the same will happen here, at a wasteful spending of $5.2 billion.

Since 1985, when the construction of the L.A. rail system began, the population of the county has grown 35% while overall mass transit usage, buses and rail, has actually gone down to the tune of 3 million boardings in the past 25 years. The Reason article quotes a member of the Bus Riders Union: "If you go back to 1985, L.A. had more people using public transit than use it today. They spent more than $8 billion over that time, and we have seen a drop in transit use."

Talk about unintended consequences: as the political class builds more and more rail systems to increase mass transit options, mass transit usage goes down. Wonder how far down it can go if Obama builds out his costly and unnecessary national high speed rail lines?

- A new Pentagon report on Afghanistan is not good:

• Violent incidents were up 65% in the third quarter of 2010 vs. 2009.
• While the NATO forces have made some progress in battling the Taliban in the southern part of the country, the Taliban has just moved north to other, more northern districts in the country.
• The percentage of Afghan civilians who think their security situation is bad is up to 20%, higher than it has ever been since tracking was implemented.
• The confidence that Afghan citizens have that their government can deliver reliable and formal justice declined 7% in the latest report.
• The Pentagon report indicates that both the Taliban and widespread government corruption are both causes for serious concern.
• The report concludes that as long as the Taliban can hide safely in Iran and Pakistan and that both the Taliban and Afghan citizens believe that NATO will be leaving soon, the chance for success will be slim.

Ten years after we entered the country, thousands of deaths later, hundreds of billions of dollars later, and this is where the political class has gotten us. Pathetic and insane.

- Last August, September, and October heavily armed sheriff deputies in Orange County, Florida raided nine barber shops in the Orlando area. Some employees and customers of the barber shops were handcuffed and some were thrown to the the ground. In total, 37 people were arrested. The grounds for the raids were to look for illegal drugs and weapons.

Two serious problems here. First, of the 37 arrests, 34 were for barbering without a license. Hardly a reason for an armed sheriff raid. Two arrests resulted in misdemeanor marijuana possession charges and one arrest was for a felony drug and weapons charges. hardly a reason for such a show of police force.

Second, and more troubling, the raids were done without warrants. The sheriffs got around the standard practice of doing research and then convincing an impartial judge to grant a search warrant by coming in the side door of legality and using the Florida regulatory system, i.e. they were not looking for drugs, they were inspecting barbershop for compliance with barbering laws. They were just using a SWAT team to do so.

Very scary to think that armed government agents can intrude into your life or business without a warrant for a fishing expedition of illegal activity. One would have thought the Constitution, specifically the fourth Amendment, would prohibit that. Fortunately, the U.S. Court of appeals has ruled that it is excessive to bring a SWAT team along on one of these regulatory inspections. Freedom is protected, at least temporarily by this court.

- A group of students at Ithaca College in the college's Environmental Studies and Sciences Department wanted to build a replica of Henry David Thoreau's cabin at Walden Pond, based on the book of the same name. Unfortunately, the local political class and government insisted that the 150 square foot cabin meet all modern code requirements including a sprinkler system. Talk about a waste of taxpayer resources if  money, time, and resources are spent on these types of regulation enforcement.

- Back to the TSA. During a pat down of a flight attendant at Charlotte-Douglas Airport, a screener felt something suspicious when she patted down the attendant's right breast. When asked for an explanation, the flight attendant explained that she had a breast removed due to breast cancer and wore a prosthesis. Unfortunately, the TSA agent demanded she remove the prosthesis and show it before proceeding to her flight. How embarrassing and humiliating, there has to be a better way, especially given the fact that according to the Federal government's own experts, the process does not work.

None of these examples of government and politicians that run that government make any sense.

But Reason magazine does not have a monopoly when it comes to political class insanity. Consider some other examples from different sources:

- Remember how the American taxpayer had to bail out big Wall Street banks based on the political class false premise that the banking system was about to collapse?  One reason the banks may have been in trouble is because of some of their own wasteful spending. According to an article in the December 13, 2010 issue of Businessweek magazine, a high ranking Merrill Lynch executive spent the following on himself:

• Hired a famous interior decorator to redesign his office who developed a $1.2 million plan for the executive's office.
• The plan included a $35,000 commode.
• There was also a $87,000 rug and a $68,000 19th century credenza.

Glad we could help out some of these needy bankers. Makes no sense.

- Over the past six years alone, the discriminatory military Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy has cost the American taxpayer over $193 million, according to the Government Accounting Office. The GAO's estimate was mostly made up of additional training costs incurred to replace gay soldiers who were kicked out of the service. Think about that: we have willing and trained Americans eager to serve our country and we refuse their offer and incur millions of dollars in expense to do so. Makes no sense.

- The Week magazine reported in their January 28, 2011 issue that a dedicated Houston couple was told to stop feeding the homeless because they don't have a permit. The couple had been feeding 120 people nightly using donated food and volunteer cooks and servers. But Houston officials shut down the program because the kitchen was not inspected or certified. An official stated that "Poor people are the most vulnerable to food borne illnesses." I guess it is better that they starve to death in a healthy way. Wouldn't a better solution have been to leverage the kind and dedicated work of this couple and their volunteers to get them certified vs. shutting them down? Sounds like the same cold hearted people that insisted on a water sprinkler system in a cabin at Walden Pond. Makes no sense.

- An article in the January 23, 2011 issue of The Week magazine,  had the title, "Bailouts: A Resurgent AIG Pays Back The Fed." The article was based on a report from the Wall Street Journal that reported that AIG had paid back the last of its bailout funds to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. As you may recall, AIG was one of the few companies that actually would have gone belly up as a result of the Great Recession if the American taxpayer had not bailed it out.

The article reported that $47 billion had been repaid which is good news. However, it want on to say that $27 billion of that $47 billion was paid with money received from the U.S. Treasury Department. Thus, how can AIG and the government claim that AIG had paid back all of its bailout money when it paid back one arm of the government with funds drawn from another arm of the government? Makes no sense.

One last piece of insanity as it relates to the situation in Egypt. One could obviously write a bunch of stuff about our government's and political class' breakdown in this situation:

1. Why did no one in the State Department see the situations coming in Tunisia and Egypt before they exploded?
2. Why did no one in the CIA see the situations coming in Tunisia and Egypt before the exploded?
3. Why did no one in Congress on foreign affairs committees see the situations in Tunisia and Egypt coming before they exploded?
4. Did someone, somewhere in the U.S. government or political class see the situations coming but due to inefficiencies and incompetence the right information never got to the right people in time, much like what happened with the 9-11 terrorists who were identified taking flying lessons but no action was ever taken?
5. Was this administration so preoccupied with beating up Israel for building a few new buildings in Jerusalem that they missed the bigger picture of Tunisia and Egypt?
6. Is there a plan for dealing with these two situations and the possibility of other disruptions in the Middle East? If there is, it is not apparent. This looks like the BP oil spill of incompetence all over again just in a different arena, no contingency plans whatsoever.

One could write about each of these shortcomings in detail but I will not. What worries me is that while our political class is running around clueless about what happened in Egypt, what is happening, and what all this could lead to, our economic competitors, China, India, Singapore, South Korea, etc. are calmly focused on their own people and their own economies.

For example, in the January 28, 2011 issue of The Week magazine, an article reported that China has now lent more money to developing countries than the World Bank has. A conservative estimate is that Chinese banks and government have loaned out at least $110 billion, mostly to suppliers of raw materials around the world in countries including Venezuela, Brazil, India, Ghana, and Argentina.

Thus, as our political class runs around aimlessly without a plan regarding Egypt, China and others are going about executing an economic strategy of their own that will push us further and further down the economic ladder. They will establish economic and business relationships before our politicians ever get their act together. How many important people in the Federal government actually worked on vital economic issues in the past few weeks as Tunisia and Egypt exploded? Very few, I would guess. That is just one of the domestic tragedies of Egypt.

It's insanity and a mess on so many fronts. Focusing on the wrong issues (sprinkler systems in a cabin in the woods), wasting resources on issues that should not be issues (preventing kind hearted Americans from feeding the homeless), wasting money on bailouts and then expecting us to be so stupid not to understand when the government pays itself with our own tax money (AIG), so closed minded that they come up with only the crudest airline safety approaches that do not even work (TSA), distractions from fixing our ailing economy, and  having no foresight or contingency plan for one of the biggest historical events of our times, the awakening of liberty in the Arab world (Tunisia and Egypt). Never has a case for term limits been so clear (Step 39 from "Love My Country, Loathe My Government"): how much worse could it get if we turned over Congress at every opportunity? Allowing them to stay on forever is proving to be insanity.
