August, 2020, Part 8, Political Class Insanity: The Continued Failure of American Politicians Drive Major American Cities To Their Expiration Date

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

1) Earlier this year a huge part of downtown Seattle was taken over by a group of thugs and anarchists and held it and its residents and businesses virtually hostage for weeks. The mayor and local politicians had neither the courage nor the will to take back a part of the city that they were supposed to be in control of. They prohibited the police from doing their jobs for weeks which resulted in all kinds of lawless chaos in downtown Seattle.

Not happy with that charade of lawlessness, the city politicians have taken their idiocy to the next step:
  • The city council has put forth a proposal that would reduce the Seattle police force by up to 100 police officers.
  • Yes, the politicians that could not prevent a part of their city from being taken over by thugs, want to reduce the very force in the city that was designed to handle, thugs, lawlessness and criminals.
  • Included in these proposals is the objective of reducing the city’s police force budget by $3 million.
  • In addition, the city’s politicians want to reduce the salary of its police chief along with the salaries of top police leaders and disband a police team that breaks up illegal and dangerous homeless camps.
  • And if this all is not enough idiocy, some council members claim this is just a start in the reducing and gutting of the city’s police force.
So, the city cannot protect the lives and property of its residents today, as witnessed by the city center takeover by criminal elements and they now want to reduce their ability to control criminal elements even more. Insanity.

I am sure that this will do what political class insanity and stupidity has done in such other places as NYC and Los Angeles: law abiding, taxpaying, and hard working citizens and their families will move somewhere where their lives and property are safer and where the local political class and the police force under them do their basic function much better than in Seattle, protecting lives and property, a very basic government function.

But this should not surprise us. We have previously done a post on how the local politicians were killing off a wonderful American city. The basis of that post was the much viewed video documentary, “Seattle Is Dying:”

So it's no surprise this latest nonsense is coming out of Seattle’s politicians, they have been killing off the city long before this year.

2) This mania of “defunding the police” in a time of lawless crises is not restricted to Seattle:
  • The city streets of Portland, Oregon have been the scene of violent ugly, and dangerous protests for well over 70 days, over two months.
  • The mayor and city council have either been unwilling or have no idea how to stop two months worth of rioting.
  • And despite losing control of their city, the political nimrods in Portland are also looking to reduce the Portland police force by 100.
Yes, your streets are controlled by unruly, dangerous, and criminal mobs every night and your priority as Portland politicians is to reduce the size of the police force, not get control of the city streets again or protect innocent residents and businesses first. Insanity.

3) Above we discussed the probable reality that residents and businesses in Seattle will likely leave the city to get away from the violence and threats against their lives and property because of the failure of the local political class to operate an orderly, law abiding city. And in a surprise move, one of Seattle’s most visible and well known residents is doing just that:
  • Carmen Best, Seattle’s African-American female police chief, has decided to bag the job and has resigned from her post.
  • And who can blame her as she tried to maintain law and order in the city only to be undermined and not supported by just about every city politician who would rather that criminals and thugs take over the city’s streets.
  • Mayor Jenny Durkan said she accepted Chief Best’s resignation decision ``with a very heavy heart.”
  • Ms. Best was a military veteran who had joined the Seattle police force in 1992, had held a variety of assignments running from patrol, media relations, narcotics and operations, deputy chief and to eventually chief of police in 2018.
  • Thus, she has a long, noble record of service to the country and the city.
In her resignation letter she correctly pointed out that these haphazard stupid police budget cuts were not constructive in improving the police work and their relationship with the community it served. But hey, if my work force was being lambasted, demeaned, slandered and reduced and yet I was supposed to still protect the citizens of the city with less money, less personnel and you were cutting my salary, not sure I would not hang around either.

As we said above, people are going to leave Seattle at a faster and faster pace as the city death spirals into chaos and violence and nothing illustrates that any better than the police chief getting out of Dodge herself.

4) While people are likely already getting out of Seattle and Portland given that the local political class in each city cannot provide basic safety and security to families and business, that outward migration has already begun in earnest in the state and city of New York.

We have recently discussed the reality that New York governor, Andrew Cuomo, has at least realized how he and the rest of the New York politicians have made New York so unsafe and taxed so high that people are moving out to where they feel safer and they can keep more of their hard earned wages. Cuomo has pathetically begged people to come back, stating he will buy them a drink, have them over for a cookout if they come back.

But according to a recent article on the Real News Real Patriots website, many New York City people are on the way out (which assumes they can find a moving company to get them out since we also recently reported that NYC moving companies cannot provide enough moving vans and resources to satisfy the outbound migration from the city):
  • A mother, Elizabeth Carr, who lives in the affluent Upper West Side of Manhattan in NYC had this to say about living in NYC: “In the best of times, NYC is a hard place to live, Now you have all this other stuff. It’s a question for families … to have to see a guy masturbating on the corner or explain to my kids while I’m buying diapers at Duane Reade why this guy wearing no shoes is collapsed on the floor and they’re doing CPR on him.”
  • Another Upper West Side resident: “There was no reason to leave before. Now, I’m done. I can leave tomorrow and never look back. If I never came back to this block that would be fine. I have definitely seen more crime, drugs, and harassment in one week than in my whole experience growing up here. I don’t want to see a child get hurt or raped, before they realize maybe it was a mistake to put [hundreds of] drug addicts and sex offenders near schools in the most dense residential population in the city.”
  • Another resident, Allison Eden: “As a parent, this isn’t the place I once knew. I feel like NYC is disappearing so fast and no one’s doing anything. There’s nowhere for them to go. I don’t want to feel afraid, and I don’t want my children to be scared to go outside.”
  • Another area mom, Jennifer, blames Mayor de Blasio For the decline of the city: “De Blasio seems to have some sort of vendetta against this demographic, no incentive to live here. I don’t feel safe going to the Fairway and Citarella anymore. I have to walk by the sex offenders at the Belleclaire with my kids. Not knowing what these people are on and what it does to them scares me.”
  • One reason for these long term residents giving up on the city, besides the pedophiles and sex offenders being thrown into their families’ midst, is that there have been more city shootings this year than the whole year of 2019.
  • July shootings this past July were 176% higher than shootings in July, 2019.
  • According to Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYC police sergeant, who was quoted in the article: “As the shootings continue, so will retaliation. It’s a vicious cycle that the NYPD worked hard to mitigate, but that they are no longer able and in some cases willing to do.
  • In the middle of the rising crime and violence the mayor has taken the boneheaded position that he wants to take a billion dollars out of the police budget and he has disbanded the plain clothes anti-crime police unit that was highly instrumental in keeping the city safe.
So sad, a city that had been safe and prosperous for decades, having survived the drug infested, crime infested days of the 1970s and 1980s, is going down the tubes today. And now all of the hard work to make the city safe for families, businesses, and individuals appears to have imploded due to the ineptness of the political class, starting with and made so many ways worse by a mayor who was recently branded as the worst American mayor EVER,

Elizabeth Carr, of the Upper West Side people quoted above, said it best: “We reached our New York expiration date. Things weren’t heading in the right direction. What we’re seeing now isn’t at all surprising.” And once anything in life expires, it rarely comes back to life. Thus, the reasons for living in NYC seem to be expiring because of the local politicians’ inability to do anything right and despite the governor’s promise of a drink and a barbeque, many people are well past their NYC expiration date.

When politicians fail dramatically for so long, from NYC to LA to Seattle, at some point there is a breaking point, financially criminally, tax wise, and livability. And we are now seeing the death spiral for some very big cities pick up speed as they too also get to their expiration date.
