April, 2016, Politicians Say The Darndest Things...Unfortunately

I recently came across a listing of stupid things that politicians and other public figures have recently spouted out. While many of these things are funny in one sense, that fun goes away when you realize how much power they have over our lives.

They have control over our retirement incomes and medical care (Social Security and Medicare), they have control over how much taxes we pay to the Federal government, they have control over the future financial solvency or insolvency of the country, they determine what laws get written, considered, voted on and enacted, etc. Once you put their idiotic quotes in that light, it gets really scary.

1) "I’ve been in 57 states. I think I have one left to go." Barack Obama, during his first Presidential campaign. Are we sure he went to college?

2) "The number one job facing the middle class, and it happens to be, as Barack says, a three-letter word” jobs. J-O-B-S." Joe Biden, I love how he got it wrong twice, once when he said it and then when he spelled it.

3) "Eight more days and I can start telling the truth again." Senator Chris Dodd while campaigning for the Senate, finally an honest politician, at least for one sentence.

4) "A zebra does not change its spots." Al Gore, and he still thinks he can recognize climate change far into the future when he does not know the difference between spots and stripes today.

5) "Every month that we do not have an economic recovery package 500 million Americans lose their jobs." Nancy Pelosi, given that there are only 300 million Americans in the country today, with many of them kids, we now have proof that Ms. Pelosi lives in a different dimension altogether where mathematical logic is sorely lacking.

6) "Jews should get get the hell out of Palestine ...and go home to Germany and Poland." Journalist Helen Thomas, a statement that does not deserve another ounce of attention or consideration, given how inane and insensitive it is.

7) "African Americans watch the same news at night that ordinary Americans do." Bill Clinton, I bet they put their pants on the same way also Bill.

8) "If you take out the killings, Washington actually has a very, very low crime rate." Former DC Mayor Marion Barry, yeah, such a shame that they include killings as part of the crime statistics.

9) "Those who survived the San Francisco earthquake said, ‘Thank God, I am still alive.’ But of course, those who died, their lives will never be the same again." California Senator Barbara Boxer, an understatement of epic proportions Senator.

10) "We’d like to avoid problems, because when we have problems, we can have troubles." Former Arizona governor, Wesley Bolin, problems cause troubles, who knew?

11) "It all depends on what the meaning of the word “is” is." Bill Clinton, yes, there are so many meanings of the word is, I can see your confusion.

12) "I am clearly more popular than Reagan, I am in my third term. Where’s Reagan? Gone after two! Defeated by George Bush and Michael Dukakis no less!" Former DC Mayor Marion Barry, ever here about term limits Mr. Mayor?

13) "His mom lived in Long Island for ten years or so. Bless her soul. And - although, she’s - wait - your mom’s still - your mom’s still alive. Your dad passed. God bless her soul." Vice President Joe Biden talking about the mother of Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen whose mother was indeed still alive, maybe the VP should have read his prep notes before talking.

14) "I’m blacker than Barack Obama. I shined shoes. I grew up in a five room apartment. My father had a little laundromat in a black community. Not far from where we lived. I saw it all growing up." Former Illinois Governor and current prison inmate Rod Blagojevich, yes, all black people shine shoes, what a racist statement to make.

15) "When Aretha first told us what R-S-P-E-C-T meant to her, she had no idea it would become a rallying cry for African-Americans and women and then everyone who felt marginalized because of what they look like and who they love." Barack Obama, I guess that takes Dan Quayle off the top of the list for worst spelling politician ever.

15) Bonus quote: “I don't fear the terrorists, they are mothers and fathers.” Rosie O’Donnell, she must have forgot that the San Bernardino terrorists that shot up their co-workers were a mother and father as are probably hundreds of other suicide bombers around the world.

16) An oldie but goodie quote: “But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it .” Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, regarding the pending Obama Care legislation, she must love opening Christmas gifts to find out what is inside them.

There you have it, a quick review of the continued insanity that comes out of the mouths of those involved with our political processes. These would be hilarious except for the fact that the people saying these idiotic things are the same ones that spend our tax dollars, control major aspects of our lives, and have no clue they are so inept and stupid sounding. Their constant jabbering make the case for term limits so much necessary:

September, 2015, Political Class Insanity, Part 5: Iranians Buying U.S. Senators, The Federal Inability to Build A Fence and More

It is the start of another month which means it is time for our monthly review of the latest political class insanity that continually spews forth from America’s politicians. Their actions, words, quotes, incompetency, and general ineptness continue to reinforce our theory that we are currently being served by the worst set of politicians in the history of the nation.

As you read about the latest shenanigans and ineptness of the political class, keep in mind what should be their priorities in these difficult times and compare this list to what they are actually working on:

  • NBC recently reported that ISIS forces are getting larger and stronger despite the Obama administration spending billions of dollars on a failed air campaign and military strategy.
  • The stock market is in free fall.
  • Job creation is barely keeping up with population growth.
  • Wage growth is anemic, growing just .2% in the second quarter, the lowest quarterly growth since 1982.
  • The labor participation rate is at the lowest level in decades because the Obama economy cannot generate enough jobs.
  • Thousands of veterans are still not getting the medical care they were promised by the Federal government.
  • 46 million Americans are still receiving monthly Federal food assistance.
  • Our borders still leak and thousands of illegal immigrant criminals continue to walk our streets
  • A record number of police officers have been assassinated in the past week.
  • Major programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are hurtling towards insolvency and lose hundreds of billions of dollars every year to fraud and mismanagement.
  • Our kids are still getting lousy public educations at most public schools.
  • The IRS and other government functions seem to be getting their computer systems hacked on a regular basis, exposing tens of millions of Americans to identity theft potential.
  • Obama Care is a failure along so many dimensions as health care costs continue to soar despite the Obama promise that they would decrease.
  • Annual Federal deficits, while down, are still about half a TRILLION a year meaning that even though the Federal government is collecting more in taxes than ever before, it still cannot run a balanced budget.
Again, keep these real crises in mind as you read what our politicians are actually doing.

1) While we try to respect everyone’s opinion, we find it difficult to believe why anyone believes that Obama and Kerry did not get their pockets picked by the Iranians when you look at the lopsided, one sided deal that was agreed to to limit Iran’s ability to get a nuclear weapon or two. We will be talking about the idiocy of this deal in a near term future post and have already shown its shortfalls in the following past post:

http://loathemygovernment.blogspot.com/2015/09/why-iran-nuclear-weapons-deal-stinks.html

But somehow dozens of Democrats in the Senate are supporting this atrocious deal which puzzled me until I remembered that old adage: “follow the money.” In a recent article by Daniel Greenfield, writing for the Israel’s Voice website, he laid out the the amount of money that Iranian interests and lobbyists have showered onto Democratic U.S. Senators. Once you follow the Iranian money, it becomes clearer why a Senator would vote to support this crazy deal:

  • Senator John Markey of Massachusetts supports the Obama Iranian deal and also was the top recipient of campaign funding contributions from the Iranian American Political Action Committee (IAPAC) which maxed out the amount of dollars it could contribute to his campaigns.
  • Senator Al Franken of Minnesota also supports the deal and also received a load of money from IAPAC.
  • Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire also supports the deal but is obviously a lousy money negotiator since she supports the deal but only got half the amount of money from IAPAC given to Markey and Franken.
  • Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York also supports the deal and she also had received IAPAC money a few years ago.
  • The Iranian lobbyists also tried to turn Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona and Charles Schumer of New York with campaign contributions but those investments went sour since neither supports this deal.
  • Iranian lobbyist Hassan Nemazee has also contributed to Gillilbrand, served as Hillary Clinton’s national campaign finance director, raised campaign funds for both her and John Kerry, pleaded guilty to a fraud scheme involving millions of dollars and has served as an IAPAC trustee.
  • Nemazee also contributed to deal supporter Senator Barbara Boxer who also received IAPAC money.
  • Vice President Joe Biden has also received big bucks from Iranian interests including the American Iranian Council and the Iranian Muslim Association of North America.
  • According to the article: A member of Iran’s oppposition had accused Biden's campaigns of being “financed by Islamic charities of the Iranian regime based in California and by the Silicon Iran network.” Biden’s affinity for the terrorist regime in Tehran was so extreme that after 9/11 he had suggested “Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran”.
  • Akbar Ghahary, a co-founder of IAPAC, has donated and raised more than $50,000 for Obama’s election campaigns.

Now, supporters of the deal might point out that Israel also plays the lobbyist game and has probably donated far more to American politicians than Iranians lobbyists have done. There is a big couple of differences though:

  1. First, Israel’s leaders and its citizens do not preach “Death To Iran” and vow to wipe Iran off the face of the earth.
  2. Israel does not support terror organizations and terrorist attacks across a wide swath of the Middle East and throughout the world.
  3. Although the Israelis probably have had nuclear weapons for a long time, they have proven themselves to be responsible owners of such weapons, something that the Iranians have not proven they would be.
Of course, we could have avoided the whole mess of Senators prostituting themselves and their principles to the highest bidders if we had implemented Step 6 from our book, “Love My Country, Loathe My Government.” Step 6 would allow only individual American citizens to donate to political campaigns. No PACs, no foreign interests, only American citizens.

But Step 6 is not in play and as a result, the worst set of politicians to ever serve in Washington have again proven themselves to be weak willed, shallow people who would trade the safety of millions of people for a few thousands dollars. Insanity.

2) We have often showed that projects and programs started by the Federal government never get completed as planned. Much money is promised, much ballyhooing is done at the beginning, and years and billions of dollars later, nothing has been accomplished. Such is the case with building a Federal government wall to secure our southern border with Mexico.

According to reporting by Paul Bedard, writing for the Washington Examiner, on September 4, 2015, the Department of Homeland Security recently admitted that only 36 miles along the U.S./Mexican border had effective double fencing. 36 miles out of thousands of miles. Pathetic. Especially pathetic since the Federal government has been trying to build an effective security fence since at least the Reagan administration over three decades ago...and probably billions of dollars ago.

How badly has the effort gone? Consider some recent Congressional testimony from Homeland personnel:

  • With a current budget of $2.5 billion, the Feds have still only been able to build less than 40 miles of effective fencing.
  • Another 352 miles of border have different types of less effective fencing which cost an amazing $7 million a mile. For that cost, the fence should go a mile under ground and a mile in the air.
  • Some of this 352 miles of fencing are built out of Vietnam era helicopter landing pads, not a very effective approach to security fencing.
  • 1,300 miles on the border have NO fencing at all. This is 66.5% of the border mileage.
Incompetence, plain and simple.

3) Let’s stay with the Department of Homeland Security for one more piece of insanity. This organization has probably received at least hundreds of billions of funding to secure the homeland since the 9-11 attacks. How well they have done is open for debate given the dozens of attacks, both executed and thwarted, over the years.

However, along one dimension of measurement they have been a total failure despite hundreds of billions of dollars. According to more Paul Bedard reporting from the Washington Examiner, a recent opinion survey by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs found that 72% of those surveyed think an Islamic terror attack on our shores is critical threat.

Additionally, the percentage of respondents who perceive a "critical threat" from Islamic fundamentalism has increased 15 percentage points in just a year, to 55%, up from 40% in 2014 and is at the highest level since 2002. So much for making us feel safe. Given the ineptness of the Department of Homeland Security to build a simple, effective border fence, this fear and tribulation is probably real and justified.

Another day, another three examples of political class insanity: Iranian lobbyists buying U.S. politicians, a Federal agency that needs $7 million to build a mile long fence, and the same Federal agency that has not calmed our fears of being attacked in our own country. And the insanity will continue to march on again tomorrow.

Why There Is Still Hope For America, Part 2......Despite The American Political Class

Unfortunately, when discussing the political class in America it usually gets pretty depressing. Runaway national debt, leaky borders, escalating healthcare costs, a lost war on drugs, failing public schools, selfish politicians whose only priority in life is their own personal enrichment and egos, a government bureaucracy that fails at everything it does, etc. It can get pretty depressing with all of the bad news that originates with a petty and inept political class.

This situation led us to write the book, “Love My Country, Loathe My Government,” a fifty step plan to fix what ails the country. Sadly, since the book was published in 2009, the politicians in this country have followed absolutely none of the common sense steps that were proposed. Doing so would have put the country in a much better position today vs. what we are currently living through.

So rather than dwell on the continuing bad news that is spawned by today’s political class, lets take a couple of days, starting yesterday, to talk about some good things that are going on that should give us all some hope that eventually we can actually fix what the political class has broken and finally actually resolve some major issues of our times.

1) Back in 2011, Michelle Bachman, a Congresswoman from Minnesota, was trying to become the Republican candidate for President. At that time, when gas prices had been skyrocketing under the Obama administration, she promised to get gas prices down to $2 a gallon if elected President.

She was universally ridiculed for such a goal, especially by the main stream media. Time magazine called her goal a "fantasy." Well, she either got really lucky or knew more than most of the world as gas prices are fast approaching $2.00 a gallon, and in some parts of the country has already broken down below $2.00. That should give everyone hope and a little economic relief.

See more on her accurate prediction at:

http://lastresistance.com/9408/michele-bachmann-mocked-2-gas-claim-now-proved-right/#c6a7WlIJrpJkqEsh.99

2) As we discussed yesterday, according to Gallup polling, more Americans than not now believe that government is the biggest threat to this country. A recent article on the Conservative Tribune website did a nice summary job of how almost three dozen states and their citizens are fighting back against the oppression and misdeeds of the Washington political class.

The method of fighting back is via Article V of the Constitution, an Article that forces Congress to call a Convention of States to propose amendments to the Constitution if two thirds of the state governments request one. The article went through how close the country and its citizens are to reining in an out-of-control Washington political class:
  • Michigan became the 34th state to submit its Article V petition.
  • However, it is not clear that all state petitions are valid or still in effect since some have been rescinded.
  • The 34 states that have submitted petitions, even if they have been rescinded include Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming.
  • The good thing about this list is that it is pretty diversified: states from all four corners of the country, states that are both liberal leaning and conservative leaning, poorer states and more affluent states, etc., indicating a nationwide disgust with how Washington operates.
So yes, there are some problems to work out. But the country and its fed up citizens are getting very close to calling a Convention of States to fix what Washington has broken, an unprecedented Constitutional effort required because of an unprecedented ineptness of Washington politicians.

3) An October 28, 2014 article by Heather MacDonald for the Heritage Foundation reported that according to FBI statistics, violent crime in the country has declined rapidly over the past few years, certainly good news. Details of the crime rate drop includes the following:

  • From 2000 to 2012, the nation's violent crime rate fell by over 23%.
  • This drop follows another big drop in the violent crime rate which was a 32% drop from 1993 to 2000.
  • The article states the greatest beneficiaries of the crime rate drop has been minority neighborhoods.
  • The drop in violent crime overall was accomplished by drops in each category of violent crimes and across all sections of the country.
According to Ms. MacDonald, there is not clear cut reason or reasons why this has happened but it has happened and that is the good, hopeful news for all of us.

4) One final bit of good news today. Long time California Senator Barbara Boxer has announced that she will retire after her current term expires. Why is this good news? Since no major issue has been resolved during her Senate tenure, I am assuming she is part of the problem and not part of any elusive solution.

I applaud any long term Washington politician leaves office, it gives us a hope that her their replacements can do a better job. Lord knows they could not do much worse.

That will do it for the good news for today. A long term incumbent politician is retiring, violent crime is down, the price of gas is way down, and Article V efforts. Keep in mind that these good news items and hopes are in spite of Washington politicians rather because of these politicians.

One more day of good news and hope will be done tomorrow, after which we go back to the insanity, idiocy, and waste that is today's political class.

October, 2013, Obama Care Disaster Update, Part 5: Crashing In California, Paying More In Colorado, Identity Theft Everywhere, and Another Delusional Washington Politician

This is our fourth day in reviewing the latest, unfolding disasters from the Obama Care legislation and we are having trouble keep up with them all. Skyrocketing insurance premiums, rampant identify theft attacks and threats, people losing their insurance or access to their current doctors, massively flawed data systems and websites, the list seems endless.

But we will keep reviewing the events that are proving our hypothesis that Obama Care is the worst piece of legislation ever produced by the Washington political class.

1) While the $600 million Federal Obama Care website has deservedly gotten the lion’s share of attention for incompetence and idiocy, the California Obama Care exchange process has also been a total bust. According to the San Jose Mercury News, two weeks after the now infamous debacle that was the Obama Care exchange rollout, California’s process  is also a bust:

  • The California website does not offer a way to find out which doctors and hospitals are included in each health plan, a major aspect of the entire effort that has not materialized as a reality.
  • That feature of the website showed up about a week later than expected but when it did finally appear, it was only in place and online for  about 48 hours before it was removed because of what exchange officials called “uneven” performance.
  • This faulty website cost a whopping $313 million to develop, funded almost entirely with federal taxpayer dollars.
  • So, just between the Federal and California Obama Care data systems processes, the American taxpayer has paid almost $1 billion for less than mediocre results.
  • Even worse, in an effort to keep premiums low, some major insurance companies in California are limiting the number of doctors and hospitals they are offering consumers.
  • Blue Shield of California confirmed that it will offer only 50% of its network doctors and 75% of its network hospitals to those who sign up for its exchange plans.

Compare this last major shortcoming to what President Obama pledged several years ago: “No matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what.”

More untrue words have rarely been spoken in the history of this nation, for both Americans in California and across the country.

2) An article by David Hogberg that appeared on October 5, 2013 on the Amy Ridenour’s National Center Blog did an extensive comparison of Obama care health insurance policies obtained via the Obama Care Colorado exchange website and current health insurance policies in the state and city of Denver, Colorado.

Not surprisingly, based on everything we have been discussing over the past few years, Americans are likely to pay much more for health insurance because of Obama Care than they would have had to spend if Obama Care was never developed:

  • The author went in to the Colorado Obama Care exchange website and hit the “Find a Plan” button.
  • The first test run involved  entering a date-of-birth in 1984, i.e., age 29, 1 person to be covered, and zip code 80224 (Denver).
  •  Here are the top three results from the search in order of cheapest premium: The cheapest plan listed is a $148 a month catastrophic plan for which subsidies are not available. The cheapest policy for which there are possible subsidies is the $163 a month Bronze plan. The author then left the exchange website and went over to see what health insurance plans were available today at the ehealthinsurance.com website, keeping all of the personal information the same.
  • The results show that 11 current plans on ehealthinsurance.com cost less than the cheapest catastrophic plan on the Colorado exchange and 18 plans that cost less than the cheapest Bronze plan.
  • In addition, there are three plans with both lower premiums and deductibles than the cheapest catastrophic plan and four such plans compared to the cheapest Bronze plan.
  • As an experiment, the author reran both website searches with the same personal information except that rather than a male looking for insurance he changed it to a female looking for insurance.
  • Here are the three cheapest plans: For a 29-year-old female in Denver there are nine plans that are cheaper than the lowest-cost catastrophic plan and 18 current Colorado plans that cost lest than the Bronze plans from Obama Care. There are the same number of plans with both lower premiums and deductibles as there are a for a male.
  • In short, the comparison shows that there are 20 plans cheaper than the lowest-cost catastrophic plan on the Colorado Obama Care exchange and 36 plans that cost less than the cheapest Bronze plan from the Obama Care exchange.

The most obvious conclusions from all of this is the majority of residents in Colorado who need health care insurance on the private market would have been better off if Obama Care never existed since current state plans are far less expensive than what they will be able to get from the Obama Care exchange process.

However, the more subtle finding of this analysis is in regards to Obama Care subsidies. It is true that the Obama Care legislation sets up a subsidy process so that lesser earning Americans may get credits towards the costs of their health insurance. This a point that many Obama Care supporters constantly harp on, that this kind of comparison above does not take into account the subsidies.

However, that supporting argument is mostly thrown out by the author’s final analysis. The 29-year-old Denver resident in these scenarios will need a monthly subsidy of about $88 to make the lowest cost future Obama Care Bronze plan equal to the lowest current  ehealthinsurance.com plan (Bronze - ehealth = subsidy needed, or $163 - $74.70 =  $88). To qualify for that level of subsidy an individual cannot make more than $23,817 annually.

For all you 29-year-olds in Denver who make more than that and have that $74.70 plan, you are likely to pay an additional $1,056 a year for health insurance ($88 per month times 12 months) with probably no additional benefits. If you break down that $23,817 to a per hour working wage rate, if you are earning more than about just $11.45 an hour, you will not receive any Obama Care subsidies to pay for that increase of $1056, it is all on you.

Even worse, at the current market plan of $74.70 a month, this equates to $896.40 a year, which is less than the $1,056 annual INCREASE that you will be paying under the scenarios listed above. Not a good deal at all.

The original article with the screen shots of the actual website search results can be accessed at:

http://www.conservativeblog.org/amyridenour/2013/10/5/fun-with-obamacare-exchanges-colorado-version.html

3) For those of us that fear identity theft will be a major problem with Obama Care, those fears are well placed if you look at just two helpful tips that Obama Care “navigators” are supposed to follow in processing a person’s private and sensitive information:

1) “Do not leave documents that contain PII [Personally Identifiable Information] or tax return information on printers and fax machines.” The warning is contained in Section 2.4.3 of the 207-page “Health Insurance Marketplace Navigator Standard Operating Procedures Manual.”

2) The same section asks navigators to “double-check” the fax number before faxing Obama care enrollee’s tax returns: “When faxing PII or tax return information, double-check that the recipient’s fax number is correct and that someone is able to pick up the faxed information immediately.”

The official HHS/Obama Care Navigator manual describes Personally Identifiable Information as follows:

  • Identifying information such as consumers’ names, addresses, or SSNs
  • Information about consumers’ incomes, personal finances, debts, deductions and exemptions
  • Any action taken by the IRS against consumers, such as investigations or penalties
  • Any private written agreements (such as a pricing agreement) with the IRS and any background information about these agreements
  • Relevant information, even if not found on the return (e.g., expenses)

Scared yet? This type of personal information, your personal information, is floating around in the hands of people that were never screened for criminal backgrounds or identity theft potential. Personal information that could be sitting around some office some where on a printer or fax machine or being send out unencrypted to a potentially unattended fax machine. Be scared, be very scared.

4) One funny yet pathetic topic on Obama Care to close today. I love California politicians like Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, and Diane Feinstein, their quotes help keep bloggers supplied with alternative reality material on a constant basis. To this infamous list today we add Congressman  George Miller, a Democrat from the great state of California.

In the most delusional case of wishful thinking in recent times to come out of Washington, this Congressman actually stated on C-SPAN  that “ongoing computer failures in Obama Care’s exchange health insurance markets are actually signs of a huge success.” You cannot make this up.

Lets review: A success sign up rate of about 1%, as we previously reported, in regards to Americans actually signing up of a plan via an Obama Care exchange. Tech and systems experts proving that this website process is a calamity of monumental proportions. The inability for anyone to actually confirm that the exchange website actually worked and they actually got insurance. These are the signs of a huge and epic failure in the real world, which again proves our point that Washington apparently does not live in the real world. I would hate to see what he considers a huge failure.

That will do it for today. Another delusional politician. The nightmare of your personal information sitting on top of an unmanned fax machine. Paying more in Colorado for your health insurance. And the epic failure that is the California Obama Care health exchange. More to come tomorrow…if you can handle it.
