December, 2014, Part 7, Political Class Insanity: The Hottest U.S. Senator, More Wasteful Pentagon Spending, And More

It’s the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from America’s politicians. Whether it is wasteful spending, inane quotes, faulty government operations, or insulting the American public, there is always new material spewing forth from these people, usually enough to fill up half a dozen or so posts every month. Given what we know today, this month should be no different as the insanity seems to be expanding exponentially from those in office today.

This is our seventh installment this month and we are getting near to the end of the latest insanity from our politicians. A lot of what you will see today comes from events that happened this past summer. It is only now that we have been able to get through the recent insanity that we can now review older, but still crazy, political class insanity. With any luck and no more political shenanigans, we might be able to wrap up this month’s political class insanity with this post (but don’t bet on it.)

1) According to an October, 2014 New York Times article, soon after U.S. military forces defeated the Iraqi government of Saddam Hussein, caravans of trucks started to bring pallets of $100 bills to Andrews Air Force base outside of D.C. The money came from accounts of the former Iraqi government and was being sent to Iraq to try and kick start the economy and new Iraqi government that was to replace Hussein.

In total, over an 18 month period, between $12 and $14 billion in cold cash was sent into Iraq and an additional $5 billion was returned to the country by electronic transfer. Where that money ended up and what it was used for then became a mystery.

So much of a mystery that a special inspector general had to be appointed to find out what happened to the cash. Stuart Bowen drew that assignment and while he found that a lot of the money probably was used as intended by the new Iraqi government, billions of it were unaccounted for. Finally, he had a breakthrough and proved that about $1.5 billion of physical U.S. cash had been stored in a bunker in rural Lebanon.

However, given his findings, no one seemed to want to do anything about it. According to the article, the Bush administration showed no interest in tracking it down and retrieving it, the Obama administration followed suit, and the Iraqi government also decided not to take steps to retrieve it. All of these administrations along with the FBI and the CIA refuse to discuss the missing billion dollars plus.

It is not easy to transport, lose, and store $1.5 billion or so. This is not pick pocket money. Yet, despite the large amount of money, nobody in the political class in Washington is interested in getting it back before it can be used for nefarious purposes. $1.5 billion in U.S. cash can buy a lot of terrorists a lot of weapons. But apparently no one in Washington cares. Insane.

2) Washington Democrats, including the President, have often tried to divide the country by claiming that Republicans have declared a “war on women” and Democrats are the only ones helping women in the country. We have previously pointed out how hypocritical this propaganda is since many famous Democratic politicians have been caught cheating on their wives, not something an advocate of women should be doing, lying and cheating on women:
  •  Former President Bill Clinton
  • Former New York State District Attorney Eliot Spitzer
  • Former New Jersey Governor James MacGreevey
  • Former U.S. Senator John Edwards who not only cheated on and lied to his wife he did these dastardly acts while she was battling cancer and fighting for her life.
There are many others but you get the idea. To this ignoble list of insulting women, we add a recent quote by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid who publicly declared at a recent campaign fundraiser: “We in the Senate refer to [New York U.S. woman] Senator Gilibrand as the hottest member.” Yes, nothing says you respect women than to refer to them in public as the “hottest.” Such insane hypocrisy.

3) Throughout this week and previously months’ political class insanity posts, we have often pointed out how inept the Pentagon is when it comes to managing taxpayer money. And now thanks to a recent article from Businessweek, that was summarized in the August 8, 2014 issue of The Week magazine, we now know that the average major Pentagon acquisition program comes in at 40% over budget.

As just one example of how incompetent the Defense Department is at logistics and procurement, Businessweek points out that even when the Defense Department purchases prescription drugs for members of our armed forces, it ends up paying a whopping 60% more than what Medicaid pays for the same drugs.

You really must be incompetent when you are 60% more incompetent than the dysfunctional Medicaid process, a process we have previously reported loses anywhere form $30 to $40 billion a year to fraud and waste. Pathetic disregard for taxpayer wealth and as always, I doubt that anyone who is responsible for this irresponsible spending ever lost their jobs or were otherwise penalized for their ineptness.

4) Political class insanity and incompetence is not restricted to Washington. A Reason magazine article from the November, 2014 issue reported on what is happening in Colorado as a result of the gun control legislation that state passed last year. Part of that legislation required that all private transfers of weapons go through a background check similar to the kinds of checks that gun stores have to do.

So how is that working out? According to the article, the state expected that there would be about 420,000 background checks as a result of the law in the first two years after enactment. One year after enactment there have been only 13,600 background checks or only about 7% of what the state politicians expected. So either the politicians did a really lousy job of estimating the impacts of their law or citizens of Colorado are simply ignoring a law that many found repugnant to begin with.

In either case, a lot of legislative time and effort was spent on a law that is having little real world impact, not a surprising outcome when talking about American politicians today.

5) One last piece of insanity for today and it is also a doozy. Nick Gillespie, writing for the Against Cronyism website, cited an Associated Press report back August that stated that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had actually paid an Amtrak secretary $854,460 over a twenty year period for confidential information on Amtrak train passengers. A secretary, a secretary in a different federal agency, twenty years, over $854,000, unbelievable.

Amtrak’s inspector general FINALLY uncovered the shenanigans after twenty years. Also unbelievable was the fact that the secretary was allowed to retire without any other significant repercussions or punishment.

Even worse, according to the inspector general’s report and the Associated Press reporting, Amtrak could have lawfully and legally obtained the same information for free over those twenty years through a standing joint drug enforcement law enforcement organization that includes both DEA and Amtrak’s own police force.

Keystone Kops could not be any more screwed up. One agency of the Federal government paying a secretary big bucks in another Federal agency for confidential customer information that they could have obtained for free. Again, you cannot make this stuff up.

Although I promised that this might be the last insanity post for this month, I have to take back that promise. I could not it all into this post. Tomorrow will be the last insanity post for this month, not necessarily because we covered all of the idiocy but because it is too depressing to go beyond tomorrow.

Until then, please consider visiting our term limits website and join the cause to clean out Washington of the insane and the insanity:

Part 3, The Lamest Washington Politicians Of All Time: In Their Own Words

We have spent the past two days reviewing some of the funnier, sadder, and more insane political quotes from our current set of politicians. This review has been keeping with our theory that we are currently being served by the lamest set of politicians in Washington in the history of our country. They somehow keep drawing high salaries and high benefits without ever resolving a single major issue facing the country.

Their ineptness is easily illustrated by their own words. Politicians that have no concept of simple math, e.g. you cannot have more people losing their jobs every week than which live in the country (Nancy Pelosi).

Politicians that would rather see American citizens who differing views from them on a issues “go to hell” rather than have a civilized, adult conversation about those issues (Maxine Walters).

Politicians that have no accurate concept of American history, e.g. Joe Biden who thinks that FDR went on television when the Great Depression hit, not knowing that the Great Depression hit before he was in office and before TV was more than a lab experiment.

Nowhere have we been able to find a recent politician’s quote that offered hope, change, insight, and solutions to our problems. All great American political quotes are attributable to politicians/leaders that lived long ago, e.g. Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR, Teddy Roosevelt, Kennedy, etc. It could be that great leaders have greats words to say and great quotes and that is why we cannot find any form the current set of politicians running the country.

Unfortunately, we could not get all of the inane and stupid quotes into only two posts and need today to finish the job…for now. I am sure more evidence of the ineptness of the current political class will come forth, to be reviewed here, in the coming months.

One disclaimer before we finish up with up. I am sure that my liberal friends and family members will eventually tell me that I am biased in that I did not include George Bus quotes, Sarah Palin quotes, Mitt Romney quotes, etc. And they would be correct, I purposely omitted their quotes but for good reason.  Bush, Palin, Romney, etc. are no longer in office and are unlikely to be in public/political office anytime soon.

They have really no impact on my life, my family, and my freedoms. Thus, I do not worry about what they say or think. I only worry about the knuckleheads that are in office today because every day, they negatively impact my life, my family, and my freedom at an alarming rate. Their incompetence deserves to be called out, using their own words. For all to see how poorly they are serving every one in this country.

Okay, let’s finish up the latest uncovered insanity quotes from the current political class.

1) ''I actually did vote for the $87 billion, before I voted against it.'' Former U.S. Senator and current Secretary of State John Kerry, on voting against a military funding bill for U.S. troops in Iraq, March 19, 2004. I guess he has all the bases covered and thus, cannot be wrong.

2) ''Our economy, I think, is still -- the fundamentals of our economy are strong.'' Senator John McCain on September 15, 2008. Shortly thereafter, major Wall Street banks collapsed, the economy imploded and the Great Recession started, the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Kind of missed the boat on that prediction, Senator.

3) "In Delaware, the largest growth of population is Indian Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7/11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking." Vice President Joe Biden. I am still trying to figure out how Paula Deen got so lambasted and screwed for something she said decades ago while this politician can get away with this kind of racist statement.

4) "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet." Former Senator and Vice President and current global warming maniac Al Gore. Sorry Mr. Gore, but…no…you did not create the Internet. Smart scientists and engineers created the Internet, not some Washington politician.

5) "We're seeing the reality of a lot of the North Pole starting to evaporate, and we could get to a tipping point. Because if it evaporates to a certain point - they have lanes now where ships can go that couldn't ever sail through before. And if it gets to a point where it evaporates too much, there's a lot of tundra that's being held down by that ice cap." Congressman Henry Waxman. Thanks for the info, Congressman, I always wondered what was holding down the tundra and now I know.

6) "If you take out the killings, Washington actually has a very very low crime rate." Marion Barry, former mayor of Washington, DC. Yeah, that’s a shame that you cannot take out the murders, that really would have improved your crime results. But you cannot take them out. [I included Mr. Barry’s quotes since even though he is not currently in office, he has been known to reappear many times over in public life.]

7) "We'd like to avoid problems, because when we have problems, we can have troubles." Wesley Bolin, former governor of Arizona. It is amazing how many times troubles and problems spring up at exactly the same time. Uncanny coincidences.

8) "I am clearly more popular than Reagan. I am in my third term. Where's Reagan? Gone after two! Defeated by George Bush and Michael Dukakis no less." Marion Barry, former mayor of Washington, DC. It’s called term limits, Mr. Barry, term limits.

9) "A zebra does not change its spots." Al Gore. Huh?

10) "Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn't even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas.''  Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann. I would bet that there are, indeed, at least a few studies that show carbon dioxide is harmful.

11) "We have a lot of work to do. It's a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq-Pakistan border." John McCain. What makes it extra hard is that Iraq and Pakistan do not share a common border.

12) "Can I explain to you what happened? First of all it happened during a period after she was in remission from cancer." Former Sen. John Edwards, on cheating on his wife. Well, that makes the adultery okay, she was in cancer remission when you had the affair, how very decent of you. Thanks for the explanation.

13) “I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.” Hillary Clinton. Spoken on her visit to Bosnia in 1996, contradicting every other account that said there was no threat or actual of gunfire. Clinton later said she "misspoke." How can you mispeak about people shooting guns at you? It either happened or it did not happen.

14) "I'm just not giving it up for f***in' nothing. I'm not gonna do it. And, and I can always use it. I can parachute me there." ... "Give this motherf****r Obama his senator? F**k him. For nothing. F**k him.'" Former Illinois Governor, and current state penitentiary convict,  Rod Blagojevich. Nice language, true leadership in those words.

15) “There are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.” Barack Obama. This quote I find particularly disgusting and disgraceful, he has obviously not operated a small business of any kind and does not recognize the major sacrifices small businesses and their owners own make. To assert they did not build their businesses is the utmost Washington condescension of all time.

16) “No, no. I have been practicing... I bowled a 129. It's like -- it was like Special Olympics, or something." Barack Obama. Paula Deen syndrome again, how does he not got skewered for a heartless statement like this?

18) “Our assessment is that the Egyptian government is stable.” Hillary Clinton, shortly before the country exploded and its long time dictator was toppled. Must come from the John McCain school of forecasting (see McCain quote above.)

19) “I had the great honor in seeing some of you because a comrade of yours, Jared Monti, was the first person I was able to award the Medal Of Honor to who actually came back and wasn’t receiving it  posthumously.” Barack Obama. But Monti died in 2006 and received the medal in 2009, the true definition of posthumously.

20) “Well, the good news is that emissions are down because of the economy.” Senator Claire McCaskill. Great news, Senator. If we can another ten or twenty million  more Americans to lose their jobs then the air would be really clean.

21) “We used to have the best infrastructure in the world. We are the country that built  the Intercontinental Railroad.” Barack  Obama. Sorry, Transcontinental railroad, no such thing as the Intercontinental Railroad. Are you sure you were born here, given such a bad grasp of U.S. history?

I am going to finish this series with seven quotes from Hillary Clinton. I include them since up until recently she was a top member of Obama’s Cabinet, serving as secretary of state. She is highly likely to be a Presidential candidate in 2016. Thus, she will likely be in our lives at least for a little while longer.

Before we review her quotes, let me share an old saying that has guided me through the years: “The reason a person curses and swears is that they are not creative enough or intelligent enough at that moment not to curse or swear.”

Now, ask yourself, given the following Hillary quotes and my quote, do we really think that she is creative enough and intelligent enough to lead or become President when this is how she behaves around other human beings and how she treats other human beings? I cannot imagine other great leaders from our past behaving as she reportedly does.

All of these quotes are cited with the sources they come from, they are no made up on my part, I am just reporting them from other sources, none of whom to my knowledge have been sued by her for false representation of facts.

#1 “Where is the G*damn f**king flag! I want the G*damn f**king flag up every morning at f**king sunrise.” Inside the White House by Ronald Kessler, p.244- Hillary to staff at the Arkansas Governor’s mansion on Labor Day 1991.

#2 “F**k off! It’s enough I have to see you shit-kickers every day, I’m not going to talk to you too!! Just do your G*damn job and keep your mouth shut.” America Evita by Christopher Anderson, p.90-Hillary to her State Trooper body guards after one of them greeted her with “Good Morning.”

#3 “If you want to remain on this detail, get your f**king ass over here and grab those bags!” The First Partner p.259- Hillary to a Secret Service Agent who was reluctant to carry her luggage because he wanted to keep his hands free in case of an incident.

#4 “Stay the f**k back, stay the f**k back away from me! Don’t come within ten yards of me, or else! Just f**king do as I say, Okay!!?” Unlimited Access by Clinton FBI Agent in Charge, Gary Aldrige, p.139- Hillary screaming at her Secret Service detail.

#5 “Where’s the miserable c**k sucker!” The Truth About Hillary by Edward Klein, p.5- Hillary shouting at a Secret Service officer.

#6 “You f**king idiot” Crossfire p.84-Hillary to a State Trooper who was driving her to an event.

#7 “Put this on the ground! I left my sunglasses in the limo. I need those sunglasses. We need to go back!” Dereliction of Duty p.71-72– Hillary to Marine One helicopter pilot to turn back while en route to Air Force One.

There you have it. Politicians that curse and swear like drunken sailors and are about as effective in getting things accomplished as drunken sailors.

Politicians that do not know American history.

Politicians that are lousy forecasters which makes them lousy legislators who cannot anticipate the future to any degree at all.

Politicians that insult those that work for them, Special Olympic participants, and Indians.

What a disgrace. Time to dump them all out of office and start again, because really, how much worse could it get:

The Latest Insanity, Disgraces, And Misbehavior From Our Political Class

Although I have been on the road and away from home the past two weeks, the insanity, disgraces, and misbehavior that is our political class continued unabated. It is difficult to keep up with their antics while traveling, there are so many of them. It is unbelievable that we allow these types of people and their actions to go on. Their actions are rarely conducive to problem solving and their lack of focus and ability often makes bad situations worse.

The first step in treating an illness is identifying the symptoms and causes. Thus, in no particular order, I bring you the latest maladies from the American political class:

- A May 25, 2011 Associated Press article reported that former North Carolina Senator and Presidential hopeful John Edwards will likely be indicted on criminal charges in the next few days by the Justice Department. This is a result of a two year investigation of whether Mr. Edwards illegally used campaign money from his political backers to cover up an extra martial affair. This affair took place while Edwards' wife was battling cancer and resulted in an out of wedlock child.

This affair has been disgraceful all along and now might turn criminal with jail time if the charges are proven in court against a man that was reasonably close to being named the Democratic party candidate for President. How is it that our political processes allowed this to almost happen?

- I recently came across a short blurb from the April 15, 2011 issue of The Week magazine that I have verified from other sources. It appears that President Obama had accepted an award in April for supporting government transparency, a major campaign goal of his. However, the presentation was done in secret in a private ceremony from which reporters and the public were barred from. Tough to figure this one out, quite insane. You campaign for government transparency, you get an award for government transparency, and then you  receive the award in secrecy. Go figure. I cannot provide anymore details because...it is a secret.

- A report published on May 24, 2011 on the Huffington Post reviewed the analysis and report done by four university researchers that tracked and analyzed the investments made by members of Congress over the past sixteen years. The researchers examined over 16,000 stock transactions made by various members of Congress during this time. Their findings included the following:
  • House Of Representatives members enjoyed "significant positive abnormal returns," with their stock trades beating the general market performance by six percent annually.
  • A similar study done on Senators by the same group of researchers five years ago found that the Senators' stock trading outperformed the market by 10%.
  • The researchers found these measures to be "economically large and statistically significant."
  • Democratic politicians do better at beating the market performance than Republicans by a wide margin.
  • Newer members of Congress do better than more senior members of Congress, possibly because they need the money more and are willing to take the risk while as more senior members have already made their money from insider trading.
The researchers concluded that since members of Congress often have insider insights to legislation that may or may not influence the market and the stock price of companies in that market, they often have advantage of what a piece of legislation might influence and could possibly be using this unique position of power for personal gain.

Members Of Congress are not required to divest any stock holdings when the assume office, they can freely trade stocks while in office, and they do not have to disqualify themselves from voting on legislation that they may have a stock interest in. Attempts to reign these types of investment abuses have always been blocked. Thus, if you or I indulge in insider trading, we go to jail. If the political class indulges in insider trading, they just get higher stock investment returns than the rest of us outside of the political class. Disgraceful

- A New York Post report earlier this week reported that President Obama's political campaign personnel are digging into New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's background for scandal, dirt, and other information that the Obama campaign could use later on if Christie is a Presidential opponent.

Two problems with this scenario. First, Christie is adamant that he is not running for President and will continue to serve out at least his first term as New Jersey governor. Thus, why is the Obama operation so worried, do they fear him that much more as a political opponent than those Republicans that have already declared their intent to run? Maybe Christie should run if Obama is so concerned about what Christie brings to the Presidential table.

Second, and this is the big concern and disgrace, this feels like Richard Nixon and his slimy dirty tricks campaign all over again. For once, could our political class please run a campaign based on ideas, ideals, and plans and not mud, dirt, and hollow campaign themes?

Is Obama that scared of 2012 that he needs to send out his minions to dig up dirt on someone who is not even running for the office? Insane. How about worrying about problems and issues in a campaign, the press will dig up whatever dirt there is to dig up. A disgraceful, Richard Nixon-like operation if there ever was one.

- Speaking of insanity, a recent article by Arthur Laffer of the Wall street Journal was summarized in the April 29, 2011 issue of The Week magazine. Mr. Laffer's analysis showed how inefficient our current tax system is:
  • For every dollar an average taxpayer pays in Federal income taxes, an additional $.30 is spent on conforming to the ever growing tax code requirements.
  • This jungle of tax regulations results in the country spending $431 billion annually just to stay in compliance with the tax code. Theoretically, reducing this burden by 50% would annually put about $1,800 back into every American household's pocketbook.
  • The insanity of our tax code causes individuals and companies to take extra effort and make changes to how the run their business in order to comply and optimize their tax burden, efforts that might be better spent actually growing their businesses and thus, growing the economy.
Thus, our tax processes are expensive from a monetary perspective and distracting from a business operations perspective, a double dose of insanity. The complexity of the tax code also promotes misbehavior by those individuals and companies that try to leverage  the complexity of the system for their own benefit to the detriment of the rest of us.

- Several weeks ago, four U.S. Senators wrote a joint letter to Apple, Blackberry, and other smart phone manufacturers, strongly suggesting that these companies no longer provide apps for their smartphone users that identify likely police drunk driving checkpoints. At that time, we blogged that this really was a waste of political time, that the rising national debt, two foreign wars, failing public schools, leaky borders, and other major issues were more worthy of attention than a smartphone application or two.

Well, talk about insanity. A USA Today article from last week reported that sales of these apps have doubled since the Senators intervened. Seems that many smartphone users did not know about these apps until the Senators raised this minor issue, resulting in the exact opposite behavior the Senators desired. If the Senators could not foresee the likely unintended consequences actions of this relatively straightforward issue, do you really think that they understand the unintended consequences of the 2,000 page healthcare reform bill they passed? Not a chance.

- An April 29, 2011 article in The Week magazine reported on a U.S. Senate report that reviewed the causes of the Great Recession. The report concluded that just about everyone involved was to blame for the financial meltdown including mortgage banks, investment firms, ratings agencies, and Federal regulators. Of particular disgraceful behavior was the Federal Office Of Thrift Supervision. This Federal agency allowed Washington Mutual to become the largest bank to ever fail in the country's history even though it had cited the bank for over 500 "serious deficiencies" over a five year period.

The main disgrace in this area, as pointed in the report, is that a needed criminal investigation was never undertaken. I believe that very few of the main characters in the guilty entities above ever suffered jail time, fines, or the loss of jobs, both inside and outside of government. Thus, misbehavior without any consequences, a sure formula for crisis.

- If the city government of San Francisco is like most other U.S. governing bodies, I would assume they have a lot on their plate. Given the dire economic circumstances of the state government in California, I would bet that the San Francisco local government is facing revenue shortfalls, high government employee pension and health care costs, reduction of city government services, ineffective schools, etc. Serious, serious challenges.

However, according to an Associated Press May 18, 2011 article, the local government has worked on and has cleared a voter referendum proposal that would outlaw the circumcision of male children within the borders of San Francisco. They have nothing better to do on the ruling body than work on this issue, assuming it is an issue, while budgets and schools continue to suffer. The article points out that this proposal could easily be viewed as an intrusion to the personal and religious life of families and more importantly, if passed, it's implementation would almost immediately be delayed for years while court cases were heard.

Thus, why do it now? Wouldn't the sane thing be to work on some of the dire immediate threats to its citizens and not worry about overreaching government intrusion into our lives that would take years and years to implement, assuming it passed AND survived court cases? Insane from a logic perspective, a disgrace from a liberty perspective, and serious misbehavior when other, more pressing issues exist.

- Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Enough said relative to insanity, disgrace, and misbehavior.

There you have it. A small sampling of the types of people continually elected to office.  Wouldn't it be nice to occasionally talk about sanity, honor, and integrity when it comes to our politicians rather than the exact opposite? Not going to happen until we change our political processes including the implementation of term limits, the removal of institutional money from election campaigns, and we start demanding sanity, honor, and integrity from those that are supposed to be serving us, not themselves.
