May, 2017, Political Class Insanity,Part 9: Insanity In Germany, An Obama Attorney Replaces the Supreme Court, and More

It is the beginning of another month which means it is again time to review the latest political class insanity from Washington and around the world. Political class insanity takes many forms including the wasting of taxpayer wealth, criminal fraud within government programs, inane and stupid political quotes and actions, the inability to create and implement effective and efficient government programs, stupid and ill performing economic policies and strategies, and other forms of insanity that continue to evolve and surprise and shock us.

Today and for all of the insanity posts this month, let’s start off with a welcome piece of honest political dialog. It comes from a State Department spokesperson. Mark Toner, who is about to start the daily State Department press briefing. In a joking matter, he makes the following quote: "Welcome to the State Department. I think we have some interns in the back. Welcome. Good to see you in this exercise in transparency and democracy."

He then burst out laughing at his own quote, indicating he also knew what a joke the Obama administration has been, especially Mr. Toner’s State Department, when it comes to cover ups, lack of transparency, denial of Freedom of Information Act requests, the prosecution of whistleblowers, etc. But at least it was a little refreshing to finally hear some actual honesty out of Washington as we see from the actual clip of the news conference:

With that context of honesty, let’s see what other insanity has been going down:

1) Let us start off today with some international political class insanity to prove the idiocy of our politicians does not make them unique. As we have always said, it is our opinion that one of the only few valid functions of government is to protect the citizens that support it via taxes and votes. Apparently that is not what is going on in Germany, where Middle Eastern immigrants are treated better than property owners in certain sections of Germany:

• In Hamburg, Germany, there are not enough housing units to shelter and support the migrants and immigrants that Prime Minister Angela Merkel has so willingly allowed to enter her country. 
• As a result, the local government and politicians are confiscating commercial properties and privately owned residences and are updating them and using them to house immigrants from throughout the Middle East.
• For example, the local government recently seized six residential units in the Hamm district of the city that are owned by a private landlord but have been vacant since 2012.
• The six units were rundown so the local government renovated them and had the nerve and gall to then turn around and bill the private landlord for the repairs they made even though the landlord cannot rent the units out and recoup his money since the city placed immigrants into the units.
• This power grab is legal under a long time law that enables the local politicians to seize any residential property they see fit as long as it has been vacant for more than four months.

Talk about an overreaching government bureaucracy. The national government unleashes a wave of immigrants across the country and a local government than seizes privately owned property to house the overflowing illegal immigrant population, property rights and private ownership and freedom be damned. Lenin would be so proud.

2) Sally Yates was a leftover attorney in the Justice Department from the Obama administration. She recently testified in front of Congress on why she refused to execute an immigration order from the Trump administration that was meant to enforce current immigration laws already on the books. 

Apparently, she decided unilaterally that the order was unConstitutional and decided that it was her prerogative as a single lawyer in the Justice Department to disobey an instruction from the President. During the hearing in front of Congress, a Senator asked some obvious questions: when did Sally Yates take the place of the Supreme Court, when did a lowly Justice Department attorney become the decider of what is Constitutional? 

According to BizPac Review: On her refusal, Yates told Kennedy that she “believed any argument [the Justice Department] would have to make in its defense would not be grounded in the truth. We would have to argue that it had nothing to do with religion.”

When asked whether or not there was another way to defend the order, Yates responded with her belief that the order’s intent was to discriminate against Muslims who wanted to come to the United States.

Then, the Louisiana senator went in for the proverbial kill-shot: “At what point does an Act of Congress or an executive order become unconstitutional?” Kennedy asked. “I can look at a statute and say ‘I think that’s unconstitutional.’ Does that make it unconstitutional?”

After some stammering from Yates, Kennedy said, “What I’m getting at, and I don’t mean disrespect… Who appointed you to the United States Supreme Court?”

Yates doubled down with the contention that it’s the Attorney General’s responsibility to say no if they believe an order is unlawful, “and that’s what I did.”

“I believe you believe what you’re saying,” said Kennedy.

Maybe so, but that doesn’t make it constitutional.

I guess that in Ms. Yate’s world, the Constitutional processes and checks and balances so wonderfully set up by the Founders in the Constitutional no longer apply to people like her, that now, it is unelected bureaucrats that get to decide what is and what is not Constitutional. Pathetic and an insult to the Constitution.

3) One of the beauties of the Constitution is the limitation it places on government and politicians that your personal lives theoretically cannot be intruded on by government bureaucrats and politicians unless there is a a real potential to hurt national security and personal security of a citizen and that a judge agrees with the request to intrude.

But as was often the case during the Obama administration, the law and Constitution are merely suggestions. According to a May 2, 2017 article on the NewsMax website:

• When the NSA does an information sweep regarding national security threats that have been approved by a court, they “mask” or cover up the names of innocent citizens that may have been swept up in the NSA activity.
• The reason they are masked is to protect the innocent who are just bystanders in the NSA investigation and to protect their Fourth Amendment rights.
• But that safeguard was not something that the Obama administration cared about since a recent uncovered government document showed that the Obama administration asked that the NSA unmask the names of over 1,900 innocent Americans who were swept up in NSA investigations.
• The accusations arising from this “unmasking” effort is that the Obama administration was looking for the names for political purposes, not national security processes. 

This is what happens when politicians and bureaucrats put political objectives ahead of Constitutional rights. Keep in mind, as pointed out in the article, in 2016 the Obama administration collected more than 151 million phone records of Americans. Given this rate of collecting over 400,000 phone records a DAY of Americans’ communications there is little doubt in my mind that Obama and his minions wanted information on his political opponents and could care less about national security in this case.

That will do it for the insanity for today: Obama and his disdain for the Constitution and privacy, an Obama attorney that thinks she is now the Supreme Court, and German political class insanity that proves that government officials around the world care more about foreigners than their own citizens.

August, 2014 Political Class Insanity, Part 6: Graft In Virginia, Ignroance in Kentucky, Corruption in New York, and Economic Ignorance Everywhere

This is our sixth and hopefully last post on this month’s update on political class insanity. This monthly series covers the wasteful spending, the idiotic quotes, the effective government programs, the selfish greed and other sins of the current set of American politicians. It is through this series that we contend that we are currently being served by the most inept and greedy set of politicians America has ever had to endure.

1) Let’s start off today on the greedy angle. According to a recent Associated Press report, a Federal prosecutor has accused Virginia's former governor and his wife of illegally accepting gifts from a businessman who sought their influence to promote his company.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber opened the trial of the former governor and his wife, Bob and Maureen McDonnell, a trial that charges the couple with accepting more than $165,000 in gifts and loans from Jonnie Williams, the CEO of dietary supplements maker Star Scientific. They are accused of accepting the gifts in exchange for helping promote his products.

Which just goes to prove that politicians at the state government level may not be any different than corrupt and now jailed politicians at the Federal level. Innocent to proven guilty but disgraceful nonetheless that this former politician and his wife acted so greedily that the Federal government thinks it has enough to put them away for their actions.

2) The Iron Dome system is a missile defense system that shoots out missiles with the intent of destroying incoming missiles from an enemy. It has been in the news a lot lately because the Israeli deployment of its Iron Dome System, has probably saved hundreds, if not thousands, of Israeli lives, by intercepting the thousands of rockets that Hamas has shot into Israel over the past months.

Pretty simple concept: anti-missile shot up in the air to intercept and destroy incoming missiles. Simple, but apparently not simple enough for a politician who is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate from Kentucky. Democratic Kentucky Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes says Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system prevents Hamas terrorists from tunneling into Israel.

Ms. Grimes was asked about the war going between the Israelis and Hamas during a recent interview with the Lexington Herald Leader: “The Iron Dome has been a big reason why Israel has been able to withstand the terrorists that have tried to tunnel their way in.”

Makes you wonder where she gets her information about life from. The Iron Dome is a MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM. It is not a giant iron cage or dome that is buried in the ground that prevent Hamas terrorists from tunneling into Israel. This is a quote and view of reality that is quickly moving up the charts as one of the dumbest quotes from a politician in recent times. 

According to an article in the Washington Beacon: the Iron Dome is a joint U.S.-Israeli missile defense system that is able to track terrorist rockets as they enter Israeli territory and destroy them in mid-air. The system has saved scores of Israeli lives and protected the Jewish state during Hamas’s latest terror campaign, in which some 9,000 rockets have been fired at Israel.

How out of touch can one be to not know this? How out of touch and inept is your campaign staff that they would allow you out in public so knowledge impaired? And you want to be a U.S. Senator? I don’t think so. Not if you are that naïve and out of touch with what is going on in the world.

3) A few days ago we reported on a New York Times article that reported on how New York governor Andrew Cuomo had shut down his own corruption investigation commission once the commission started investigating the potential wrong doings by one of companies he used for his election campaign.

Well, it seems that might not be the only shady dealings going on up in Albany. According to a recent Bloomberg report, the governor’s election campaign collected at least $650,000 in campaign contributions from companies or people whose companies were granted tax credits to redevelop industrial sites according to research done into state government data.

Related Cos. was the biggest donor, donating at least $262,700 to Cuomo’s campaign. Syracuse shopping-mall businessman Robert Congel, members of his family and executives at his Pyramid Cos. contributed $143,250.

According to Bloomberg, critics of the incentives, which have cost taxpayers more than $1 billion since 2006, claim they benefit wealthy developers and have done little to clean up contaminated industrial sites. Bloomberg cites a research study found that 94 percent of these tax credits have been used for redeveloping properties instead of fixing polluted and contaminated land.

Again, innocent until proven guilty. But as we have often said, the appearance of a conflict of interest is just as bad as a real conflict of interest. Deals and arrangements like this just smell bad, regardless of intentions, good or bad. 

That is why Step 7 from “Love My Country, Loathe my Government,” is needed in this country. Step 7 would allow only individual citizens to contribute to political election campaigns. Businesses, unions, PACs, Super Pacs, etc. would be prohibited form contributing and possibly buying influence and political favors. While it might not get rid of all the political hi-jinks and rip offs of taxpayers, a properly implemented and policed, Step 7 would go a long way to getting rid of even the appearance of conflicts of interest and might actually protect taxpayer interests in the long run.

4) According to a recent Bloomberg report that was summarized in the August 1, 2014 issue of The Week magazine, former secretary of State Hillary Clinton has made $12 million in speaking fees since leaving that position in February, 2013. That comes out to an amazing $750,000 a month. She is making in a MONTH, on average, fifteen times as much than what the average American household earns in a YEAR. I am sorry, nobody is worth that much money whose track record of accomplishment is next to nil.

5) More secrets about the National Security Agency’s (NSA) out of control spying on American citizens was made public recently. In an interview in the Guardian newspaper in England, former NSA analyst and whistleblower, Edward Snowden, made it known that NSA employees circulate ‘sexually compromising images” among co-workers that they came across when spying on innocent American citizens.

This type of behavior was “seen as sort of the fringe benefits of surveillance positions,” according to Snowden. We are getting oh so close to 1984 and Big Brother when the type of behavior is allowed to go on, secretly exploiting the lives of innocent American citizens using these same taxpayers’ wealth to do so.

6) According to a CNN.com report that was summarized in the August 1, 2014 issue of The Week magazine, a whopping 48% of the Dodd-Frank financial industry reform legislation’s regulations and rules have not be formulated or written yet. This is four years after the legislation was passed. 

What good is passing legislation if four years later the Federal government is just about half way to getting the guidelines put together never mind having that legislation having an positive impact in the market? I cannot imagine the IRS letting any citizen get away with similar behavior, e.g. granting a four year extension to file income taxes. But somehow, politicians can get away with idiotic legislation that never really gets implemented. Insane.

7) We often make the case that the current set of American politicians have no economic background, no economic experience, no economic sense, and no economic training, resulting in economic programs and strategies that often to more harm than good in growing the economy. A recent article from Bloomberg, summarized in the July 18, 2014 issue of The Week, magazine reinforced this opinion.

Despite spending about $830 billion on a failed economic stimulus, trillions of dollars in Federal Reserve “quantitative easing," record low interest rates, and an energy boom, the political class has screwed up the economy so much that around 15% of all Americans, about 45 million people, still live below the poverty level in this country. The poverty level is defined as earning less than $23,600 a year. 

If we had taken that $830 billion from the failed economic stimulus and written a check to each of those 45 million Americans, a family of four living below the poverty line would have gotten a check for over $70,000 or at least three times their annual income. That would have been the far better economic decision rather than squandering the money like Washington did on stupid programs and crony infested programs, none of which stimulated any economic activity.

That will wrap up the political class insanity for this month. A depressing but necessary exercise that shows once and for all that we are living under the worst performing, most inept set of politicians in the history of this country. December, 2013 Political Class Insanity, Bonus Post: ATF Loses Millions Of Cigarettes, FBI and NSA Go Wild, Detroit Goes Poof, and More

Okay, one last set of insanity for this month, courtesy of the American political class, As I feared, no sooner had we stopped writing about the lunacy and wasteful spending of the American political class, another wave of insanity hits us, requiring one last bonus post for this month.

The basis of this last insanity post is the current issue of Reason magazine. Reason is a great source of news and analysis when it comes to freedom and liberties. They provide deeper insights to the ways the political class is continually stripping us of our rights as government’s tentacles reach deeper and deeper into our wallets.

One of their monthly features is a section called ‘Citings” where they give quick hits on what we call political class insanity. The first four hits below are from their January, 2014 issue and the remaining hit is just another broken promise and boast from our current President.

1) It is no secret that the Obama administration, using the National Security Agency, has shredded the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution and the protection against unreasonable and unwarranted searches of our lives. This issue of Reason gives a little perspective on just one aspect of this intrusion into our private lives, for no reason:

• According to a report and analysis from the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Security Agency, every 90 days for the past seven years, has obtained secret warrants and orders from the ultra secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that compelled telecommunications carriers to give the Federal government the total telephone calling records, international and domestic, on EVERY American from EVERY day.
• Since 2008, the FBI was given free rein to investigate American citizens that were not even suspected of any crime or wrongdoing. Imagine the potential for abuse from that activity.
• The ACLU found that from 2009 to 2011, the FBI opened over 82,000 of these types of intrusive investigations and found less than 3,500 (only about 4%) justified any further investigation.
• It was not reported how many of those meager 3,500 actually led to any criminal or terrorist arrests or cases. 
• Thus, about 80,000 Americans secretly had their private lives violated without cause and without their knowledge.

The Fourth Amendment ceases to exist when government agents can capriciously get into your private communications for absolutely no reason or justification and not even have to tell you they did so. That is insanity in a free society.

2) Political class insanity does exist solely at the Federal government level. We have often covered the insanity at the local and state government levels. Consider a law and court case from the state of Texas. 

Let’s assume you found that you were really good at braiding hair. You figure you have a skill with minimal overhead that could make some money and possibly a career out of. Great, braiding someone’s hair does not require the use of harsh chemicals, noxious gases, dangerous and sharp instruments, or any other dangerous process. You are just creatively twisting someone else’s hair at their request. 

However, the assumption that this type of business has low overhead would be false. According to Texas state law, in order to simply braid hair in Texas, you have to maintain an official “barber college.” This entails having a facility with at least 2,000 square feet of space, you have to have multiple mannequins and associated wash stations, and you have to have 2,250 hours of training, hours that must cost a lot of money. All to braid someone’s hair. Lunacy.

This is what happens when government and the bureaucracy it spawns gets too large. Either unnecessary government agents and employees come up with ludicrous regulations like this to justify their jobs or excessive regulations are used to erect high barriers of entry into an industry, reducing competition and protecting special interests already in that industry. This protection is usually erected in cahoots with the associated politicians who usually get some type of financial reward for erecting the barriers.

Fortunately, a brave citizen in Texas, Isis Brantley is fighting this insanity in court. Best wishes to her as she looks to protect her freedom to earn a living at something she likes to do and is good at it without the political class and bureaucratic government it operates getting in the way. We wish her luck.

3) Let’s combine the previous two affronts to freedom, government snooping without just cause and overreaching and intrusive state government, and see what we come up with. According to Reason, we might come up with the snooping fiasco in the state of Ohio. According to Reason, the political class in that state quietly integrated facial recognition software into a state government website that includes driver’s license photos. Scary development.

Even scarier is the fact that a whopping 30,000 law enforcement officers in the state of Ohio are authorized to access driver license images without audits, warrants, or any oversight. Again, imagine the potential for abuse with such a wide open access to private lives for no reason. 

A police officer trying to find the identify of his ex-wife’s new boyfriend. A potential stalker police officer seeing a pretty woman on the street and using her photo to track down her name and address. The scenarios for abuse are large, dangerous, and downright creepy. That is what people in Ohio are facing from a political class that has very little respect for privacy and security of its citizens. And since the FBI research has found that facial recognitions is often wrong at the rate of about 20% of the time, is the risk worth the less than perfect results?

The article points out that Kentucky has a similar system but allows only 34 government employees to access the photos, software, and information. Twelve states do not have such software, the state of Maine forbids its use by any state agency, and several states that have the software absolutely forbid its use by law enforcement authorities.

4) One of the jobs of the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Federal agency is to clamp down on black market cigarettes sales. They are probably not doing a great job since recent news reports indicate that about 60% of the cigarettes sold in the state of New York are sold illegally on the black market but that is a topic for another day.

This latest issue of Reason magazine reported on major screw-up’s by ATF when it comes to undercover stings and operations by ATF agents:

• A recent study by the Justice Department found that the ATF may actually contribute to the supply of illegal cigarettes sold on the black market rather than stopping such sales.
• The study looked at “churning” investigations where ATF agents are actually allowed to engage in illegal cigarette sales, I am assuming as undercover sting operations, as long as the money made selling cigarettes in the operations is used to fund the ATF operations.
• Sounds like a nifty idea, let the criminals pay the government money during the stings and the government does not have to turn back the cash paid during the sting. They “theoretically” can use it to fund their operations, reducing the burden on the taxpayers.
• However, the Justice Department found that such operations had lousy oversight and auditing controls in place.
• In one case, the ATF allowed an informer to keep $4.9 million out of $5.2 million in profit that was made by one operation. 
• The study could also not account for the location of 2.1 million cartons of cigarettes that churning investigations were supposed to use to catch the smugglers.
• The missing cigarettes are worth more than a whopping $127 million on the retail market. 

Think about that last statement: the government cannot account for $127 million worth of assets. Unbelievable. Also, where do I sign up to become an ATF informant? At $4.9 million, that is a sweet gig.

5) In other insanity, recall this week that we have discussed the fact that General Motors still owes the American taxpayer about $10 billion from their government bailout. They are unlikely to ever repay that loan even though they are sitting on over $26 billion in cash reserves and are investing large amounts of money in China where they will be hiring Chinese workers, not American workers, to build cars.

But now recall the words from President Obama in October, 2012 when he was bragging about what he had done to “save Detroit” and bolster his reelection chances:

“Just a few years ago, the auto industry wasn’t just struggling – it was flatlining. GM and Chrysler were on the verge of collapse. Suppliers and distributors were at risk of going under. More than a million jobs across the country were on the line – and not just auto jobs, but the jobs of teachers, small business owners, and everyone in communities that depend on this great American industry… [we] refused to throw in the towel and do nothing. We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt.”

Well, he cannot make the promise or boast anymore. A judge has ruled that yes, Detroit can go into bankruptcy and will able do so after all of the appeals are heard and the ruling likely upheld. Detroit never had a chance, Obama’s claim last year was fortunate for him that it came a year or so before the eventual reality took place.

In just fifty years, the American political class took the fourth largest city in America, a city with the most prosperous middle class, and turned it into a Third World cesspool that had no other financial options except to seek bankruptcy protection from the courts. That is true insanity and another Obama failed promise, despite shoving tens of billions of dollars into the area, wasting billions and billions of taxpayer dollars in a futile attempt to fix an unfixable mess. Insane.

There you finally have all the insanity for this month. Broken political promises, losing millions and millions of dollars through botched ATF operations, unwarranted invasions of privacy, and erecting barriers to market entry for no good reason. Yep, sounds about right when talking about America’s current political class. Pathetic.

The Week The Obama Administration Entered Lame Duck Status, Part 2: Spying On Friends, Spying On Americans, Lying About The IRS and More

Yesterday, we postulated that we have already entered the lame duck era of the Obama administration despite the fact that he still has three years left in his term. We used the three words, humility, humanity, and integrity in conjunction with two major administration scandals, Benghazi and Obama Care, to support our lame duck theory.

From a Benghazi perspective, we pointed out the details from a recent CBS News “60 Minutes” broadcast that proved the administration was aware that the consulate attack in Benghazi was a true Al Qaeda terrorist attack while it was going on. How do we know that? The ambassador, Chris Stephens, actually completed an outgoing call in the midst of the attack stating they were under attack and that Al Qaeda flags were clearly visible, a call he completed before he was murdered.

Despite having this information and other intelligence information readily at hand, the Obama administration via the President, Hillary Clinton, U.N. ambassador, and other administration shills tried to cover up the facts and blame an obscure YouTube video for the attack. They tried to falsely paint the incident as just a street demonstration that got out of hand. The “60 Minutes” investigation shows clearly this was an intentional deception and cover up to keep intact the President’s campaign slogan that Al Qaeda was on the run and on the decline.

Obviously, this President and his administration were out of integrity when they lied about the cause of the Benghazi tragedy, they were void of humanity when the abandoned over 20 Americans in the midst of a terrorist attack, and probably never had any humility since their election year politics were more important than American lives or the truth.

The Obama Care lies are even more obvious. We showed yesterday via numerous video clips that the President often, clearly, and emphatically pledged that no American would ever lose access to their preferred health care insurance plans or their doctors under Obama Care if they liked their insurance policy and their doctors. There is no doubt that is what he meant, no American would ever lose access to their preferred policy or doctor.

However, events over the past week have showed that nothing could be further from the truth. Millions of Americans have either already or will shortly lose access to the insurance policies they desire and the doctors the desire. The President’s promise does not hold water. 

But the real integrity hit comes from the fact that NBC News’ investigative journalists uncovered administration documentation from 2010 that correctly predicted the carnage Obama Care would befall Americans’ health care situations. Three years ago those official documents estimated between 45% and 67% of Americans would lose access to their current policies and doctors.

Despite that reality and understanding, the President continued to lie and deceive Americans about what Obama Care had in store for them. We asserted that the President was certainly out if integrity by hoisting that sham promise on the American people while all the time knowing it was not true. 

We also noted his lack of humanity by never telling us the truth when it was known three years ago. It would have been a lot more humane if he had given Americans three years notice to adjust their family health care situation rather than waiting until weeks before that situation will change as a result of Obama Care. 

We also judged him void of humility since as we have seen this past week he refuses to apologize and make the situation right, e.g. possibly delaying or fixing the mess that the legislation has created. Instead of humility and leadership, we get political spin and smoke and mirrors to try and bury his deception.

When your constituents can longer trust you because you lied about Benghazi and Obama Care, when you show no humanity by leaving Americans to die in Benghazi or by not giving them the true impacts of Obama Care, and you never show any regrets or humility, your ability to convince, to cajole to energize, and to lead a nation is null and void. And null and void is just another name for being a lame duck.

These two scandals are bad enough and sufficient to cause a lame duck status but the lame duck train does not stop there. It turns out that the President has allowed the National Security Agency and other Federal agencies to spy on the leaders of our allies and innocent Americans, as recent news reports have uncovered:

• The Week reported in its September 27, 2013 edition that the President of Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff was besides herself when she learned that the Obama administration was spying on Brazilian government AND private communications. This spying included intercepting her own phone calls and emails. She was so upset that she cancelled a planned state visit to the U.S., a major, major slap in the face to the President.
• On October 28, 2013, the Associated Press ran a long, detailed article on the outrage in Europe over the fact that the Obama and Bush administrations, via the National Security Agency, has been doing massive spying and intercepting electronic messages of European leaders, governments and European citizens. Unbelievably, the agency had tapped German Chancellor Angela Merkel's own cell phone! The spying situation is so bad that European leaders and countries are seriously considering sanctions against the Obama administration and the U.S. for such a gross invasion of privacy of our allies. German has joined forces with Brazil, who recently denounced NSA espionage as a “breach of international law,” to promote the adoption of a U.N. resolution that would promote the right to privacy on the Internet.
  21 counries have lined up in the United Nations to draft a right of Internet privacy while the furor over the U.S. spying on at least 35 world leaders. Some of the details of this mess can be accessed:

• The September 20, 2013 issue of The Week magazine contained an article detailing the fact that the National Security Agency had violated its own privacy rules and regulations on domestic, private citizen surveillance for at least three years. While the agency is expected to show a “reasonable, articulate suspicion” that a phone number and citizen are involved with terrorist activity or groups, official government documents show that over a recent three year period, only 1,935 out of 17, 385 numbers on its “alert list” met that criteria. 
• Combine this finding with the knowledge we have already reported on that the Obama administration is collecting just about every single bit of electronic communications of every American and storing this information in a massive center in Utah, you realize the Europeans and the Brazilians are not the only people getting electronically violated by the Obama administration.
• According to a Washington Post article from October 13, 2013, The National Security Agency is constantly collecting hundreds of millions of contact lists from personal e-mail and instant messaging accounts around the world, many of them belonging to Americans, according to senior intelligence officials and top-secret documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. During a single day last year, the NSA’s Special Source Operations branch collected 444,743 e-mail address books from Yahoo, 105,068 from Hotmail, 82,857 from Facebook, 33,697 from Gmail and 22,881 from unspecified other providers, according to an internal NSA PowerPoint presentation. The article asserts the intelligence officials estimate that the buddy contacts lists of millions or possibly tens of millions of Americans have been collected without due cause or their knowledge.

Scary, scary abuse of power and control. And again, a complete lack of integrity, humanity, and humility. From a lack of integrity perspective, first consider the President’s own words from a Washington Post article:

In his own words, he claims no American is being spied on. But we know from the Washington Post and other news outlets that this is a lie and deception, we are being spied on by this administration. 

A second angle on lack of integrity is to not tell Americans or foreign allies we are spying on you, it is all done in secrecy. And secrecy makes it a lot tougher to trust you and believe you and follow your lead, making you a lame duck and the objective you desire that much further out of reach.

From a humility perspective, even after this administration got caught spying on our allies, they were not repentant. In the President’s own words, via the White House, relative to the Brazil spying scandal and outrage, that President Obama “understands the and regrets the concerns that disclosures of alleged U.S. intelligence activities have generated in Brazil.” 

Note that the President and the White House do not regret the act of spying and privacy invasion, they regret the “disclosures” of alleged spying. No humility or apologies at all, they are more ticked off that they got caught than from the heinous spying activity itself.

From a humanity perspective, how bad is it when this administration distrusts every American and most of our allies that they have to secretly spy on everything we do and what our allies do? Trust is one of humanity’s most cherished emotions and feelings, but trust is lost on this soulless administration.

We could  on and on about the lack of integrity, humanity, and humility in this administration. Remember the lies about the IRS and the White House harassing Americans’ freedom of speech who happened to disagree with this administration? 

We were initially lied to and told that only a few “rogue” IRS agents in Cincinnati were harassing Obama’s political opponents. That lie and deception have long been disproven as we know from IRS testimony in front of Congress, by people like Lois Lerner, that the harassment originated and was controlled from the highest government circles in Washington.

Remember the lies and deceit about Fast and Furious, the botched illegal gun running operation with the Mexican drug cartels? That operation is so bad and illegal that Obama has issued executive orders in an attempt to cover that lie and deception.

You cannot not lead when no one believes anything you say based on your past history of lies and deceptions. 

You cannot lead when no one believes your humanity, no one believes that you actually care what happens to them when you leave people to die in a far away land, when you force them to change their entire health care safety net for no reason, or when you track their every communication because you have no trust that most Americans are not terrorists.

You cannot lead when you have no humility. When nothing is your fault, when you refuse to admit mistakes, where you show no ability to learn from your mistakes or to be flexible about the needs of others, the lack of humility is not a true mark of a leader.

As we have tried to show over the past two days, this administration is extremely devoid of integrity, humanity, and humility. You cannot lead when that is you history, the lack of those three characteristics makes you a lame duck, going through the motions because no on believes your motions and even worst, no one cares about or trusts your motions. 

Bottom line: when your behavior causes your allies and friends to fear you and your enemies not to fear you, your have entered the realm  of failure and lameness.

Government Gone Wild, Part 6 - Is NSA Whistle Blower a Hero or Traitor?

The past five days we have been discussing the despicable and disgrace abuses of freedom and the Constitution that have come to light in the press, focusing on the fact that it is becoming more and more obvious that the Federal government is systematically collecting and organizing all of the electronic communications of private American citizens.

Combining this massive data collection effort with the fact that recent other scandals show how the Federal government have been using private information and government agencies (e.g. the IRS) to harass those with different political views than this President and have secretly obtained and tracked the call records of members of the press, the potential for the abuse of freedom and the growth of tyranny is staggering.

Which brings us to today’s discussion on this whole mess.   Edward Snowden is the ex-government employee who really blew the whistle on the National Security Agency’s effort to collect just about every bit of our private electronic communications information. Some people, both inside and outside of the political class, are calling him a traitor and want him arrested and tried for treason. Others are appalled at the information he disclosed and want the government reigned in and see Snowden as a hero, protecting freedom and the Constitution.  

Which ever way you see him, traitor or heroic whistleblower, I do not think you can call him a coward or a man without principles, much unlike much of the Washington political class. Consider what he has likely given up to call attention to something that disgusts him and should disgust every American:

• He has given up his high paying job, a job that paid him about $200,000 a year.
• He has given up his home, his girl friend, the freedom to spend time with family and friends.
• He has likely given up his freedom to live his life peacefully for what ever time he has left for once the Federal government physically gets its hands on him, who knows what happens.
• He has avowed that he does not want to live in a world where there isn't any privacy.
• He has stood up and said that he does not want to live in a world where everything that he says and does is recorded.

How many people in this country would shake off the apathy and make a stand for freedom like Snowden? Hate him or love him, he did a very brave thing by exposing excessive government intrusion into our private lives. Consider just a brief, frightening recap of some of the things Snowden is asserting:

• I can get your e-mails, passwords, phone records, credit cards.
• Any [NSA] analyst at any time can target anyone.
• We collect more digital communications from America than we do from the Russians.
• Even if you're not doing anything wrong, you're being watched and recorded.
• I do not want to live in a world where everything I do and say is recorded.
• I don't want to live in a world where there's no privacy, and therefore no room for intellectual exploration and creativity.
• And it will be turnkey tyranny.
• I understand that I will be made to suffer for my actions, and that the return of this information to the public marks my end.

Very scary stuff, a government out of control. Snowden made the biggest sacrifice of his life by disclosing this information and one that should be admired on principle. The big question is whether of not the American people will follow and insist that his sacrifice lead to an adult discussion in this country on how best to protect our physical safety without damaging our freedom and liberty. I wonder how many have the same amount of fortitude to do this that Snowden has shown.

Five thoughts before closing today:

1. I recently read a quote from a former head of Mousad, the Israeli secret service. He insightfully said that it is possible to win every battle against terrorism and still lose the war against terrorism. What good does it do to defeat the physical attributes and dangers of terrorism if you destroy the very things that the war on terrorism is trying to protect, our freedom, our liberty, our privacy, our democratic way of life?
2. Many in the Federal government and Washington political class want to “get” Snowden where “get” is defined however you think the government will react to being publicly humiliated like this. But if they go after Snowden, shouldn’t they also go after California Congresswoman Maxine Walters? Back in February, Ms. Walters made the same disclosures as Snowden did. She may have not been as explicit or as knowledgable about the data gathering process but she disclosed the same information when she said: “And I think some people are missing something here. The president has put in place an organization that contains the kind of database that no one has ever seen before in life. That’s going to be very, very powerful. 3. Let's not stop with Ms. Walters. Five years ago, actor Shia Labeouf was being interviewed by Jay Leno when he stated that the FBI consultant working with him on a movie at the time told him that, on average, the government actually listens in on about one out of every five phone calls that Americans make every day. If you combine this assertion five years ago with the recent disclosure that an NSA can listen in on any American's phone calls without a warrant and you see that Snowden was actually at least the third American to disclose the government's illegal snooping. 4. According to the web page listed above that was the source of the 27 Snowden quotes, one CNN reporter said that he really admires Snowden because he had attempted to get government insiders to also come forward with details about government spying over years, but none of them were ever willing to so. Thus, possibly there are other NSA employees who were equally appalled by the government’s intrusive behavior but did not have the same strength as Snowden. Hopefully, his actions will inspire them to also come forward so that we can more fully understand what is going on.

Government Gone Wild, Part 4: Orwell or Obama, Take The Quiz

Over the past few days we have been covering the scandal and disgrace that was recently uncovered by the Guardian newspaper, namely the fact that the Federal government, the National Security Agency, and the Obama administration have secretly been collecting the telephone calling details of millions and millions of Americans. This unethical heist of private telephone information was executed via a secret court order signed by a secret judge in a secret court. Secret anything is usually never a good thing in a democracy.

Subsequent revelations by other reputable news sources have uncovered the fact that the government and this administration is also collecting other electronic communications activities of private citizens including emails, credit card transactions, etc. This was all done in the name of “national security.”

The scary aspect of these clandestine activities is the recent scandal on how the Obama administration was using, and abusing, the private citizen information available via the IRS to harass and deny freedom of speech rights to citizens and organizations, both political and religious, over the past few years. This severely broke the bond of trust between the citizenry and the government and the belief that the government was an impartial entity, not favoring anyone or any group based on their political or religious views.

Now, with that broken bond of trust, who is to say that the government and its agents will not similarly abuse the citizenry with this trove of private communications data? As the various scandals unfold, we seem to be getting closer and closer to the repressive form of government written about in George Orwell’s novel, “1984.” In that story, an all controlling, all knowing, repressive government, represented by the fictional propaganda figure, “Big Brother,” has squashed democracy and free will while keeping an extremely tight and oppressive leash on all citizens.

How did you do? It is not easy distinguishing between the oppressive tactics of Big Brother, the Obama administration, and the entire political class in Washington. And, even though some of the answers above directly relate to Orwell, with a little imagination they could also apply to the Obama administration and Washington in general:

• When a renegade U.S. Army soldier, a person who had been in touch with a leading terrorist leader in Yemen, goes crazy in Fort Hood and starts shooting up the place, killing and wounding many Americans, yelling anti-American slogans and pro Islamic slogans in the process, this administration insists it is not a terrorist attack, it is a violence in the workplace incident. Certainly a case of Orwellian thinking and “propagandist language marked by euphemism, circumlocution, and the inversion of customary meanings.”
• A similar case of circumlocution and inversion is made by the Obama administration insisting that there never be a reference to “Islamic terrorism” even though there are many people devoted to Islam who are terrorists, i.e. newspeak. Did the Obama administration “upsub” the description of the terrorist attacks at Benghazi when the so-called “talking points” were changed or edited about a dozen times to minimize the appearance of government incompetence, eventually settling down to a point where the “talking points“ made up stuff and put the blame for the attack on a badly made, obscure YouTube video?
• Isn’t it a form of Doublethink when the President says no one will lose their current health care insurance under Obama Care but the Congressional Budget Office says 7 million Americans will lose their insurance, when the President says not a single dime will be added to the deficit because of Obama Care but  numerous sources expect hundreds of billions of dollars to be added to the deficit because of Obama Care, when the President says that the entire ten year cost of Obama Care will be under $900 billion but the latest Congressional Budget Office puts the total cost at over $1l7 TRILLION, etc.
• Didn't Nancy Pelosi recently experience a misreported episode when after four years of extolling the cost savings every American will experience under Obama Care she recently declared that she never declared that every American would see cost savings under Obama Care?

You get the idea. Even if this administration and the entire political class do not fit the exact quiz answers that were attributed to Big Brother, they certainly are showing distinct signs that they are behaving more like Big Brother rather than as representatives of Americans within a democratic system.

That is why Step 39 from “Love My Country, Loathe My Government” is so important. Step 39 would impose term limits on all Federal politicians so that we break this Big Brother mode of thinking and operation and get back to the principles of privacy, freedom, limited government.
