A Libertarian View On Today's World and What To Do About It

[Note: the first three paragraphs of this post comes from a Facebook post of a friend but I do not know where she got it so apologies for not crediting the person who originally penned these words.]

I’m sick of COVID-19. I’m sick of black vs. white. I’m sick of Democrats vs. Republicans. I’m sick of gay vs. straight. I’m sick of Christians vs atheists. I’m REALLY sick of the media. I’m sick of no one being allowed to think what they want and feel what they do without offending someone. I am sick of the nosy ass people who call the cops when anyone does anything they don’t approve of. I am sick of blaming the whole for the sins of a few.

We’re one race—the human race. You want to support President Trump? You do you. It’s your choice. You want to support Biden? Fine... also your choice! You want to believe in God? Okay, believe in God. You want to believe in magical creatures that fly around and sprinkle fairy dust to make life better? Awesome... you do you.

BUT stop thrusting your beliefs on others and not being able to deal with the fact that they don’t have the same exact mind-set as you. Having our own minds is what makes us all individual and beautiful. If you can’t handle the fact that you may have a friend that has opposing views as you, then you are not any better than the bigots and the racists. I don’t have to agree with everything you believe to be a decent human being and your friend.

Remember, those trying to take away our liberties and freedoms are not our neighbors, our co-workers, our friends or family members. It is the political class in this country and their cohorts in the biased media and journalism industry. Their strategy is to divide us, make us fight among ourselves while they reap the rewards of public office where getting reelected over and over is more important than ever resolving any issue facing the country.

People have different views, that is human nature. But people should be able to come together in a civil, adult, mature manner to resolve problems, not change someone else's view. But civil, adult and mature is anathema to politicians' overall selfish aims of greed, power and ego. They are the root cause of the problems in this country, not your neighbor's differing political views.

Never forget the words of George Orwell in his novel, 1984: "The propagandist's purpose is to make one set of people forget that certain other sets of people are human." Adult and civil conversation and problem resolution is not possible if we allow the media and the political class to make us think those with differing views are somehow not human and not worthy.

October, 2019, Part 7, Political Class Insanity: NYC Goes Orwellian, Journalism Losses Its Integrity, and New Jersey Governor Imitates Marie Antoinette

It is another month which means it is again time to review the latest political class insanity from Washington and around the world. Political class insanity takes many forms including the wasting of taxpayer wealth, criminal fraud within government programs, inane and stupid political quotes and actions, the inability to create and implement effective and efficient government programs, stupid and ill performing economic policies and strategies, and other forms of insanity that continue to evolve and surprise and shock us.

Let’s get started:

1) Novelist George Orwell, writing in his classic novel “1984,” stated that “manipulation of language as a weapon of mind control and abuse of power.” Control the language and you can control the conversation and wherever there is control there is a loss of freedom.

Which is the situation in New York City as a result of a recent law that it enacted:
  • The law has banned people from threatening anyone by calling them an “illegal alien.”
  • If found guilty of hatefully calling someone an illegal alien the penalty could be a fine up to a quarter million dollars.
  • It is illegal to use the term even though from a Federal government perspective, it is an accepted legal definition.
  • What exactly it means to use it in a hateful or threatening way has not been defined by the law so it is obviously open to interpretation and abuse.
  • And it obviously is an affront to the First Amendment, a city government and mayor cannot go around and banning someone from saying two words regardless of how and when they are said.
  • Which means after a long legal battle, the law will be struck down as being un-Constitutional and a whole lot of time, energy, and resources would have been wasted for nothing.
Besides being repugnant and illegal, why was such effort put forth on this waste of time? Would not have political efforts and capital been better spent on fixing a lousy school system, helping the homeless on the streets of the city, repairing the crumbling subway system, etc.? So many major things broken affecting millions of city residents and the politicians in the city focus on this tripe. Insane.

2) We have always claimed that a free, unbiased press is critical to the maintenance of democracy. A free press keeps an eye on the greed and corruption of the political class and should be educating citizens on facts and allowing those citizens to make informed judgments based on all of the facts and realities of the issue.

But we have also claimed that the field of journalism today is not doing what the Founders hoped they would do via the First Amendment. Media outlets today are themselves biased. corrupt, and always working an agenda rather than being good, unbiased journalists. This reality was vividly and recently pointed out by some stupid and biased comments from an MSNBC broadcast:
  • Gabriel Sherman, a Vanity Fair writer, was recently interviewed on an MSNBC telecast.
  • The topic of discussion was the faux impeachment drive that Democrats in the House are trying to put together without any real evidence of anything.
  • Without pointing out any evidence of substance, Sherman said that the case for impeachment was so simple that “even the Fox audience can understand” how guilty Trump is.
  • The obvious cruel insinuation is that Fox viewers are so stupid.
This is obviously no way to have an adult conversation on the issues of the time. This is no way to be an unbiased and respectful journalist. Another example of media news bias and disgrace.

Oh, Mr. Sherman, by the way, the Fox News audience is more than twice the size of the audience of CNN and MSNBC COMBINED so I am pretty sure that in sheer numbers Fox viewers may be as smart as the viewers of your outlet.

3) But Sherman is not the only condescending “journalist” on TV these days who is as biased and hateful as Sherman. Jake Trapper of CNN recently was talking about impeachment and said that: “He [Trump] has an army of trolls [that support him.]” So in Tapper’s mind, a great number of Trump supporters, ordinary American citizens, are nothing but mindless “trolls” in his Tapper’s mind.

Cannot get more spiteful than that. Again, talk about not being unbiased, not searching out for truths and realities like a real journalist would. Just mindlessly calling millions of citizens trolls because you disagree with their political preferences.

Two examples, Sherman and Tapper, why I fear for democracy in this country because the press and journalism in this country have lost the only thing that made them a valuable part of a free nation: their integrity. And when you lose your integrity it is very, very difficult to get it back.

Oh, by the way Mr. Tapper, you have so few trolls tuning into CNN that many nights your ratings and CNN ratings fall below the audience levels of the Hallmark channel and shows like “Cupcake Wars” on the Food Channel. Again, the loss of integrity, when integrity is the only thing your professional stands for, is a terrible thing to waste.

4) I was born, grew up, and spent much of my working life in New Jersey so it obviously by original home state. Thus, I saw first hand for many, many years the wasteful and irresponsible spending of state taxpayer wealth on failed projects, greedy political, etc.

I moved to Florida 14 years ago and have probably saved over $130,000 in lower property taxes and a non-existent state income tax in Florida. This all came to mind today when I found out how the current governor of New Jersey was still wasting taxpayer wealth back in New Jersey:
  • According to Brent Johnson, writing for the website, NJ.com, current NJ governor, Patrick Murphy, spent over $1 million on a satellite governor’s office for himself in Newark, New Jersey.
  • This is one millions dollars spent, not on his primary office in the state capital where he will spend the vast majority of his time, but on a secondary office that he will likely use very infrequently.
  • He already had a Newark office but decided he deserved a larger office in that city, at a cost of $1 million.
  • But it gets better: the annual rental cost, which taxpayers will pay, of the new office will be more than $145,000 a year compared to the original, smaller office which cost less than $45,000 in annual rent.
  • The governor tried to defend this outrageous spending of taxpayer wealth by declaring that having an office in Newark, the state’s biggest city was important.
  • But he misses the point: he already had an office in the city, he just wanted a bigger, more lavish one and spending $1 million of someone else’s money was his way to get it.
As with most pompous politicians, such a bad set of priorities:
  • How many homeless and hungry New Jersey folks could have gotten a meal or two out of that unnecessary $1 million one time investment and the $100,000 more that he is paying in annual rent?
  • How many drug addicted New Jersey folks could have gotten some addiction treatment out of that unnecessary $1 million one time investment and the $100,000 more that he is paying in annual rent?
  • How many computers could have been purchased for inner city school kids out of that unnecessary $1 million one time investment and the $100,000 more that he is paying in annual rent.
  • Patrick Murphy’s “let them eat cake moment:” I want a million dollar new office, other human priorities be damned.
That will do it for this month’s insanity: wasting money on unnecessary office space, the loss of integrity and the resulting danger to democracy from the mainstream media, and NYC goes Orwellian. More insanity sure to follow next month.

August, 2019, Part 4, Political Class Insanity: Jail Time For Feeding Two Cats, Orwell Is Back, and Inane Laws Across the Country

1) Hillary Clinton breaks Federal laws and government protocols by having an unsecure computer server, a server that is hacked by the Chinese and probably other countries, in her house and does not get in criminal trouble. Barack Obama breaks existing laws, shreds the Constitution and ignores judicial rulings and does not get in criminal trouble. A 79 year old woman in Ohio feeds two stray cats and goes to jail for 10 days.

Whoever says that justice is evenly distributed across all segments of the American population is obviously blind to how the political class gets away with so much more severe crimes than ordinary Americans:
  • Ohio resident Nancy Segula, who is 79 years old, was recently sentenced to 10 days in jail for feeding two cats.
  • One of her neighbors had moved away but had left her pet cats behind on the streets to fend for themselves.
  • Being a kind hearted human being, Ms. Segula took pity on the cats and started to feed them so they would not starve.
  • Neighbors called animal services and they dropped four citations on her for feeding the cats instead of taking the cats off of the streets themselves.
  • By the time she got the fourth citation, she was required to report to the local government and was then sentenced to jail.
So remember, if you are not a politician, be careful what stray animals you feed, you could get jail time. The news report with additional details is at:

2) For anyone who has read the George Orwell novel, “1984,” you know that it predicts that eventually the government will overtake and destroy all of our freedoms. In that world, the government controls the news, the language we speak, the actions we take and if we dare to violate their dictates, then severe penalties are in store. In such a world, government surveillance is everywhere, there is no hiding from the prying and spying hand of the government and “Big Brother.”

Very scary reading, reading that just got scarier based on a recent USA Today article:
  • According to the article, the Pentagon and Federal government are launching and testing unmanned surveillance balloons to observe what is going on on the ground within the country.
  • The balloons are currently being launched from sites in South Dakota and are hovering via solar power over a number of midwest states.
  • Theoretically, the balloons are to provide "a persistent surveillance system" to help counter drug running and homeland security threats.
  • These purposes are on file with the FCC which had to approve the balloon launches for "experimental special temporary authorization."
  • The balloons float miles and miles above the surface (65,000 feet) so they are unlikely to be seen by criminals, terrorists and drug runners.
  • But their high tech equipment allows them to track individual vehicles as these vehicles travel miles and miles through all kinds of weather and through days and nights.
  • Each balloon can cover 25 square miles in detail and can communicate with each other and hand off tracking if necessary.
So many issues here:
  • Why is the Pentagon involved in domestic crime fighting, a slippery slope on domestic use of military resources?
  • Given that Obama illegally seized and spied on just about every American’s electronic communications, who and what is to prevent another person like him to do the same with this technology and turn it against their political rivals?
  • Given that the Obama administration abused the FISA court process to illegally spy on Trump’s campaign, who is to say a future administration would not do the same thing relative this technology and abuse the need for a court order to use this balloon technology?
Privacy is key to living in a free society and the potential for the military or crooked politicians to take away our privacy via this technology is immense and would certainly help fulfill Orwell’s vision of Big Brother and the destruction of democracy in this country.

3) Let’s finish off today’s and this month’s political class insanity with something a little more light hearted than the destruction of democracy. We often maintain that American politicians are not smart enough, resourceful enough, or energetic enough to resolve real issues facing their constituents and the country. As a result, they waste time, resources, and taxpayer wealth on inane rules, laws, and efforts that in the big picture make very little sense and have very little impact on Americans’ lives.

I recently came across a source that listed out the most insane rules and laws in each state. As you read some of the craziest ones I have listed below, keep in mind that these ideas were proposed, debated, changed, and finally enacted by state and local politicians even though I am sure there were far more important issues (e.g. failing public schools, crumbling infrastructure, drug addiction, crime, etc.) that could have been addressed rather than enacting these laws:
  • In Alaska you can only legally convert a picnic table into a boat if it contains the necessary safety equipment such as life vests and is properly registered as a boat.
  • In Arizona it is illegal for a donkey to sleep in a bathtub.
  • In California, it is illegal to eat a frog who died during a frog jumping contest.
  • In Florida, pregnant pigs have the legal right to be unconfined and able to roam free while pregnant. No other animal in Florida has these same pregnant rights.
  • In Pocatello, Idaho, it is illegal not to smile in public.
  • In Iowa, the only legal size of all boxes used for picking hops has to be precisely 36 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 24 ¼ inches deep.
  • In Topeka, Kansas, it is illegal to scream in a haunted house.
  • In Missouri it is illegal to remove mattress tags or bring untagged mattresses into the state.
  • In Montana it is illegal to raise pet rats unless they are used as reptile or bird food (that has to be a big bird).
  • In New Hampshire it is illegal to collect seaweed off of beaches during night hours….but apparently okay to do it during the day.
  • In New Jersey it is illegal to wear a bullet-proof vest while murdering, kidnapping, robbing, or raping, a law that I am sure all felons abide by.
  • In Pennsylvania it is illegal to run a bingo game if you are a convicted felon. Could that really be a problem, massive numbers of felons running bingo games?
  • In South Carolina it is illegal to play pinball unless you are 18 or older.
  • In Huron, South Dakota is is illegal to cause static electricity.
  • In Vermont, it is illegal to dress one’s horse up in a disguise and to disguise it as something other than a horse. I have to think it is pretty hard to dress up a horse and actually make it look anything other than a horse.
  • In West Virginia is its illegal to hunt wild animals using a ferret.
Again, these are real rules and laws, negotiated, fine tuned, and enacted by inept politicians who cannot fix real problems but instead worry about disguised horses and other such nonsense.

More insanity next month, to be sure.

October, 2016, Part 4, The Unfolding Disaster That Is Obama Care - Making Up Excuses For Failure, IRS Harassment of Citizens, and More

Every month for years now we have had to discuss how bad Obama Care is turning out to be under the continuing theme, “the unfolding disaster that is Obama Care.” This month is no different. As the legislation continues to march through America, driving up health care and health insurance prices as it serves as dead weight on economic growth, it cements its rightful place as the worst piece of legislation Washington has ever produced.

It never had a chance to be successful since it really never addressed the underlying root causes of our ever increasing health costs in the country:

  • Americans eat too much of the wrong kind of food, resulting in obscenely high obesity rates for the country.
  • Our food chain is infested with overdoses of high fructose corn syrup, salt, and other unhealthy additives.
  • Americans smoke too much.
  • Americans do not exercise enough.
  • The country is in serious need of health care tort reform.
  • Barriers to insurance company competition across state lines need to come down.
  • Obama Care never “followed the money” to find out who is actually profiting from the ever escalating healthcare costs in this country and how to get those factors under control.
  • Obama Care never got the immense amount of fraud and abuse in current government healthcare programs, Medicare and Medicaid, under control in order to save money to efficiently fund other government health care initiatives.
  • Obama Care never put serious research money towards curing the major diseases that drive high healthcare costs such as high frequency cancers and dementia type diseases.
You cannot resolve any problem unless you understand and address the underlying root causes. No difference here: Obama Care legislation never addressed these listed root causes and thus, has no chance of ever being successful.

But it is not just missing the root causes of our healthcare costs that makes Obama Care so horrible. It resulted in millions of Americans losing access to their favored doctors, hospitals, and insurance policies. It has caused insurance premiums, deductibles and co-pays to escalate substantially. It will likely add trillions of dollars to the national debt. It has exposed millions of Americans to higher than necessary identity theft chances. It has created government bureaucracies that are wastefully spending taxpayer wealth and being exploited by criminal elements. It has stifled economic growth and job creation.

These are just a sample of the types of idiocy that we have been reviewing for the past several years in this blog relative to Obama Care., To read those past posts, just enter the phrase, “the unfolding disaster,” in the search box above.

This week we will be reviewing the latest unfolding disasters from the worst piece of legislation ever written by Washington:

1) The October 14, 2016 issue of The Week magazine did an article on the downfall of Obama Care called, “Why Obama Care Is Struggling.” It covers much of the failures we have already discussed this week and adds in a few others along with the very few, and very weak, Obama Care success stories:

  • Some of the largest health insurers in the country, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Humana, and Blue Cross Blue Shield are rapidly pulling out of the Obama Care market because they are losing billions of dollars by being in those markets.
  • Only 12.7 million people enrolled in the Obama Care exchanges this year, far short of the forecasted and promised 21 million who should have already enrolled. [Note: not included in the article is the reality that over 1.6 million original enrollees out of the 12.7 million have already been kicked out of their policies because they never paid the first installment of their premiums so the miss relative to the 21 million is even worse.]
  • As many as 19% of those customers will have access to only one Obama Care insurer in 2017, very short of Obama's promise that Obama Care would increase competition, not reduce competition to only one provider.
  • The main reason cited for the failure is that not enough young people have signed up for Obama Care policies, preferring to pay the penalty for not having insurance.
  • While the business case and financials of the Obama Care effort required at least 35% of the enrollees to be aged between 18 and 34, in reality that percentage is only a meager 28%.
  • Another problem with the shortfall is that small businesses did not kick employees off of their business insurance plans and onto the Obama Care policies as often as the Obama Care planners and forecasters expected, leaving the Obama Care insurers with older, sicker, and more expensive customers than expected.
  • As a result, Obama Care insurance companies either have to hike up premium costs which drives away customers or strip down the benefits of their insurance policies, forcing customers to pay higher prices for less robust insurance coverage which drives away customers so much that many insurance companies decide that from a financial perspective, it is better to be out of the Obama Care world than be in it and take a financial beating.
What a mess, missed customer forecasts, higher premiums, less competition. Now, to be truthful, the article does point out that 20 million more people have health care insurance vs. the times previous to the Obama Care legislation. Also, the percentage of Americans without insurance coverage has dropped from 16% to 9% since Obama Care was passed. But there is a problem with considering the increased quantity of people having healthcare insurance vs. the quality of their healthcare insurance:

  • Many of those with Obama Care policy customers are paying more and getting less than what they had with their previous insurance policies, policies that Obama Care outlawed and doomed to termination.
  • Which gets us to another point, the 12.7 million who enrolled in Obama Care policies in 2016, were not all people who had not had health insurance before the law was enacted; likely more than half of the 12.7 million just traded their existing policies for Obama Care policies, often under duress, so that the incremental number of Americans insured under Obama Care insurance policies is likely closer to 4 or 5 million.
  • Half of those Americans that are now insured as a result of the law, have gotten insurance via Medicaid, a reality that places upwards of 10 million people on a government program that will add tremendous costs to our national debt, provide health care via very narrow networks of less than the best doctors and hospitals, it is a government program that is hurtling towards financial insolvency, is corrupted with inefficiencies and criminal fraud, and if a Harvard study is to be believed, being a Medicaid patient does not make you any healthier vs. not having Medicaid coverage at all.
So yes, Obama Care did increase the number of Americans with health care insurance coverage. But Obama never promised that it would be lousy coverage that costs a lot, has high deductibles, had narrow networks of doctors and hospitals that were not of the highest quality, the reality that we see today. Quality also matters, it is not just quantity that matters.

[Note: the article tries to make the point that “overall government spending on healthcare was $2.6 trillion less last year than what it was expected to be before Obama Care…” This is obviously a ridiculously wrong number. The entire Federal government budget is just under $4 trillion a year so to claim that it is spending $2.6 trillion LESS, not in total, $2.6 trillion LESS, a year on healthcare is obviously either a falsehood meant to make Obama Care look better than it is or a gross typo.]

2) Zachary Tracer, Katherine Doherty, and Tatiana Darie, writing for Bloomberg on October 14, 2016, continued the bad news train coming out of the Obama Care disaster:

  • According to an analysis by Bloomberg, 1.4 million Obama Care policy holders in 32 states will lose access to their policies in 2017, forcing them to find other insurance options.
  • Most of the damage is being caused by major insurance companies pulling out of the Obama Care world.
  • The search for replacement policies will like lead to fewer insurance policy choices that are more expensive.
  • S&P Global Ratings predict that 2017 enrollment in Obama Care insurance policies will be down by 8%.
  • Just in Washington DC 7,800 Obama Care customers will lose access to their current policies.
  • Kaiser Family Foundation has predicted that at least 19% of people in the Obama Care individual market will have the ability to choose from exactly one provider in 2017.
  • In North Carolina, Blue Cross Blue Shield will be the only Obama Care option in 95 out of the state’s 100 counties since Aetna and UnitedHealthcare have withdrawn from the state, leaving 284,000 state residents without Obama Care health insurance policies.
  • 117,000 residents in Tennessee will lose access to their Obama Care policies.
Another article, another set of implosions.

3) Obama Care from the beginning always had a little bit of the “Big Brother” syndrome ala George Orwell’s 1984. The government was forcing you to buy a product/service that you may or may not want to buy and making you a criminal if you did not heed their warnings and tracking your behavior to make sure you obeyed.

That Big Brother feeling came about again with a current IRS program that was put in place to ensure your compliance. The IRS, the enforcement arm, the “muscle” behind Obama Care is sending out official IRS letters to uninsured Americans (“reaching out” in their words) to remind them (“attracting” in their words) they need to get insured or be fined. The emphasis of the IRS has been to “remind”younger Americans to get insured because in order for Obama Care to work, younger Americans have to subsidize older, less healthy Americans, kind of a cross generational subsidy program from Americans with generally less wealth paying the bills of Americans with generally more wealth to their name.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Majority Whip Steve Scalise and Ways & Means Chairman Kevin Brady recently sent a letter to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. It stated, “We strongly object to any action by the Administration to improperly use sensitive taxpayer information to identify and harass individuals who have rejected the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) by choosing to pay a tax rather than be forced into a health care plan they don’t need and don’t want.”

Their other concern is that the IRS was using “protected taxpayer information” to conduct the outreach program and that “We do not believe it to be an appropriate tax administration activity, or a good use of scarce taxpayer resources, to use protected return data to direct taxpayers on their personal coverage decisions.”

So yes, Big Brother IRS is watching and like Santa Claus, knows if you have been naughty or nice when it comes to your personal decision on health care insurance, the First Amendment be damned.

4) This next story is great because it shows how out of touch many of the Obama Care architects are relative to the current meltdown of the program and how deep they are into denial. According to David Ruiz, writing for the Washington Free Beacon on August 16, 2016, Zeke Emanuel, one of the more primary and certainly one of the more obnoxious architects of Obama Care, implied that Aetna’s decision to withdrawal from 70% of the Obama Care exchanges markets is not because they were losing money on Obama Care policies but it was to spite the government for not allowing its merger with Humana.

Is he that much out of touch with reality or just pissed off that his work is turning out to be a disaster? Let’s consider some facts:

  • Blue Cross and BlueShield have also pulled out of a bunch of Obama Care markets because of heavy financial losses.
  • UnitedHealthcare has pulled out of a bunch of Obama Care markets because of heavy financial losses.
  • Humana and other insurance companies have pulled out of a bunch of Obama Care markets because of heavy financial losses.
  • 17 out of the 23 Obama Care co-ops have gone out of business already because of heavy financial losses.
  • We know for a fact that younger, healthier Americans did not sign up for Obama Care in the volume expected which increased insurance company costs more than expected.
  • The primary objective of any business executive is to maximize shareholder wealth so no executive would stop operating in a profitable market category if they were maximizing shareholder wealth in that category, i.e. being profitable serving that category.

And despite all of these realities, this sore loser blames Aetna for doing something the whole market has done or is considering doing. By the way, Emanuel provides not proof, no income statements, no Aetna financial disclosures, no Aetna SEC documents, he just accuses them of doing what everyone else is doing. Pathetic.

One last set of unfolding Obama Care disasters tomorrow.

Government Gone Wild, Part 4: Orwell or Obama, Take The Quiz

Over the past few days we have been covering the scandal and disgrace that was recently uncovered by the Guardian newspaper, namely the fact that the Federal government, the National Security Agency, and the Obama administration have secretly been collecting the telephone calling details of millions and millions of Americans. This unethical heist of private telephone information was executed via a secret court order signed by a secret judge in a secret court. Secret anything is usually never a good thing in a democracy.

Subsequent revelations by other reputable news sources have uncovered the fact that the government and this administration is also collecting other electronic communications activities of private citizens including emails, credit card transactions, etc. This was all done in the name of “national security.”

The scary aspect of these clandestine activities is the recent scandal on how the Obama administration was using, and abusing, the private citizen information available via the IRS to harass and deny freedom of speech rights to citizens and organizations, both political and religious, over the past few years. This severely broke the bond of trust between the citizenry and the government and the belief that the government was an impartial entity, not favoring anyone or any group based on their political or religious views.

Now, with that broken bond of trust, who is to say that the government and its agents will not similarly abuse the citizenry with this trove of private communications data? As the various scandals unfold, we seem to be getting closer and closer to the repressive form of government written about in George Orwell’s novel, “1984.” In that story, an all controlling, all knowing, repressive government, represented by the fictional propaganda figure, “Big Brother,” has squashed democracy and free will while keeping an extremely tight and oppressive leash on all citizens.

Which brings us to today’s post, courtesy of the following website:

http://www.buzzfeed.com/hnigatu/orwell-or-obama

Take the following quiz and try to determine whether the topic of each of the following ten questions describes the repressive tactics of Orwell’s Big Brother or the Obama administration (answers below):

1. "Telephony metadata"

- Another word for the information the Orwellian government is secretly collecting from its citizens’ phone records.

- Another word for the information the Obama administration is secretly collecting from its citizens’ phone records.

2. "Teledep"

- The department in Orwell’s “1984” that is in charge of re-writing history through media.

- The department in the Obama administration that is responsible for getting intelligence from telephone calls.

3. "The Custodian of Records"

- The figure in Orwell’s “1984” in charge of cleaning up all media to erase any hint of government wrong doing.

- The figure in the Obama administration who provides electronic phone records to the National Security Agency.

4. "Data-mining"

- The Orwellian practice of searching citizens’ data for national security.

And the correct answers in the quiz of who is the bigger of the “Big Brothers” are as follows:

1) Obama

2) Orwell - Teledep is short for The Teleprograms Department of the Ministry of Truth.

3) Obama - “The Custodian of Records shall produce to the National Security Agency (NSA) upon service of this Order, and continue production on an ongoing daily basis thereafter for the duration of this Order, unless otherwise ordered by the Court, an electronic copy of the following tangible things: all call detail records or “telephony metadata” created by Verizon for communications (i) between the United States and abroad; or (ii) wholly within the United States, including local telephone calls.” Source: The Guardian, the newspaper that broke the story on the NSA spying scandal.

4) Obama - “The request for the bulk collection of all Verizon domestic telephone records indicates that the agency [NSA] is continuing some version of the data-mining program begun by the Bush administration in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attack.” Source: The Guardian

5) Orwell

6) Orwell - “Upsub” is a part of the language of Newspeak.

7) Obama - “The FISC oversees requests for surveillance warrants against suspected foreign intelligence agents inside the United States by federal law enforcement agencies (primarily the F.B.I.). [Enacted in 1978]” Because of the sensitive nature of its business, the FISC is a “secret court”: its hearings are closed to the public, and, while records of the proceedings are kept, those records are also not available to the public.” Source: Wikipedia

8) Orwell - “Malreported - When the Times reports a fact which the government later deemed untrue. You see, the government is never “wrong”, the paper merely reported the facts incorrectly. This term was often used in describing newspaper articles that contained references to unpersons, unfulfilled economic projections, or altered government policies.” Source: A glossary of Orwellian terms.

9) Orwell - Pornosec is a division of the Fiction Department of the Ministry of Truth that produces pornography for proles (the working class/proletariat).

10) Orwell

How did you do? It is not easy distinguishing between the oppressive tactics of Big Brother, the Obama administration, and the entire political class in Washington. And, even though some of the answers above directly relate to Orwell, with a little imagination they could also apply to the Obama administration and Washington in general:
  • When a renegade U.S. Army soldier, a person who had been in touch with a leading terrorist leader in Yemen, goes crazy in Fort Hood and starts shooting up the place, killing and wounding many Americans, yelling anti-American slogans and pro Islamic slogans in the process, this administration insists it is not a terrorist attack, it is a violence in the workplace incident. Certainly a case of Orwellian thinking and “propagandist language marked by euphemism, circumlocution, and the inversion of customary meanings.”
  • A similar case of circumlocution and inversion is made by the Obama administration insisting that there never be a reference to “Islamic terrorism” even though there are many people devoted to Islam who are terrorists, i.e. newspeak. Did the Obama administration “upsub” the description of the terrorist attacks at Benghazi when the so-called “talking points” were changed or edited about a dozen times to minimize the appearance of government incompetence, eventually settling down to a point where the “talking points“ made up stuff and put the blame for the attack on a badly made, obscure YouTube video?
  • Isn’t it a form of Doublethink when the President says no one will lose their current health care insurance under Obama Care but the Congressional Budget Office says 7 million Americans will lose their insurance, when the President says not a single dime will be added to the deficit because of Obama Care but  numerous sources expect hundreds of billions of dollars to be added to the deficit because of Obama Care, when the President says that the entire ten year cost of Obama Care will be under $900 billion but the latest Congressional Budget Office puts the total cost at over $1l7 TRILLION, etc.
  • Didn't Nancy Pelosi recently experience a misreported episode when after four years of extolling the cost savings every American will experience under Obama Care she recently declared that she never declared that every American would see cost savings under Obama Care?
You get the idea. Even if this administration and the entire political class do not fit the exact quiz answers that were attributed to Big Brother, they certainly are showing distinct signs that they are behaving more like Big Brother rather than as representatives of Americans within a democratic system.

That is why Step 39 from “Love My Country, Loathe My Government” is so important. Step 39 would impose term limits on all Federal politicians so that we break this Big Brother mode of thinking and operation and get back to the principles of privacy, freedom, limited government. Because, as this quiz proves, along with the past few posts on government snooping and harassment, we are much closer to Orwell’s dysfunctional world than to Jefferson‘s, Franklin’s, and Washington’s vision for America.

Tomorrow, we will put forth our proposed steps needed to fix what ails our democracy and those that created this mess that would have made Big Brother proud.

Government Gone Wild, Part 3: The Face of Tyranny As Described By Some Very Smart People

We have spent the past few days reviewing the hideous Federal government program that recently came to light which uncovered the fact that the Federal government, and the political class that operates it, have been collecting, analyzing, and storing just about every form of electronic communications possible from just about every American, regardless of whether or not they are a threat to national security. These electronic records include phone calls, emails, Internet activity, etc. and were obtained from secret court orders issued in secret courts and approved by secret judges. Democracy is not served when the word "secret" is used so often to describe government activities.

This is truly the face of tyranny and just another in a recent set of examples of the Obama administration abusing freedom and liberty in this country. Government intrusion and abuse of privacy of citizens and organizations. The silencing of whistle blowers. Using government agents and agencies to silence political opponents and religious freedom. Spying on news organizations and secretly obtaining the phone logs of those news organizations' reporters. Forcing religious organizations to change their religious tenets for political reasons. And then accusing the governed of having a trust problem. Despicable and disgusting.

But possibly we can learn from others, from today and in the past, when it comes to tyranny and how to handle it since tyranny of this scope has never been seen to this degree in this country. This education process starts right now as we quote some very smart people from today and in our past who actually recognized the many faces of tyranny:

1) Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner, the Republican author of the Patriot Act, sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder saying he is “extremely disturbed” by reports that the NSA collected phone records from Verizon customers – and insists it violates the law: “These reports are deeply concerning and raise questions about whether our constitutional rights are secure.” Again, this is the guy whowrote the Patriot Act and even he is concerned our rights are being trampled by the Obama administration.

2) Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Injustice anywhere threatens justice everywhere.” I have heard a few scattered reports that some people applauded the IRS for targeting conservative and Tea Party entities. However, what they fail to realize that endangering the rights of any American citizen makes it easier for today’s and tomorrow’s politicians to violate every citizen’s rights and freedoms.

3) Thomas Jefferson: “When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty.” Pretty hard not to fear government when it and its agents have detailed knowledge of your calls, your Internet activity, use its power to suppress your freedom of speech and religion, etc.

4) James Madison: “If tyranny and oppression come to this land it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.” Sound familiar, we need to spy on every American, trample their rights, in order to win the war on terror.

5) Lysander Spooner: “Those who are capable of tyranny are capable of perjury to sustain it.” Today, perjury comes in the forms of denying Freedom Of Information Act requests and the non-transparency of government activity.

6) Thomas Jefferson: “Experience hath shown, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.” Sound familiar?

7) Alex Storozynski: “Tyranny anywhere is a threat to freedom everywhere.” Similar sentiment to the  MLK related quote above.

8) C.J. Redwine: “Silent acquiescence in the face of tyranny is no better than outright agreement.”

9) Ben Franklin: ”They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

10) Harry Truman: "Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear." How better to silence the voice of oppostion than to sic the IRS and NSA after them, to harass them and distract them not because they broke the laws but simply because they had a different political view?

11) Fourth Amendment to the Constitution: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

According to Wikipedia, the purpose of the Fourth Amendment was as follows:

The Fourth Amendment (Amendment IV) to the United Sattes Constitution is the part of the Bill Of Rights which guards against unreasonable searches and seizures, along with requiring any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause. It was adopted as a response to the abuse of the writ of assistance, which is a type of general search warrant, in the American Revolution. Search and seizure (including arrest) should be limited in scope according to specific information supplied to the issuing court, usually by a law enforcement officer, who has sworn by it.

Sounds like the Obama adminsitration massive secret data colleciotn of telephone records and other electronic communications has Fourth Amendment violations all over it since it is a general search warrant, it is not limited to specific information, it is not supported by probable cause, and the amount and volume of data colelcted of innocent citizens is certainly unreasonable by any measure.

12) Martin Nimbler (German pastor discussing the Nazi tyranny on its own citizens):

“When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.”

I love this last quote because only individual citizens, acting as one to protect everyone’s freedom can defeat tyranny. If you are not conservative, or religious, or a Tea Party supporter, you may not care that the Obama admnistration targeted them for harassment and abuse. If you are not a news reporter, you may not care that the Obama administration harassed and abused news reporters. But standing idly by encourages this type of behavior, making it even more egregious and wide ranging the next time, a time that may impact your beliefs, lives, and families.

Let this quote and the ones above serve as a guide to defeating what is the creeping tyranny and destruction of our democracy, regardless of which American or group of Americans are being subjected to that tyranny.

Tomorrow we will let you take a Big Brother vs. President Obama quiz to see whether there is any difference between Orwell’s "1984"  Big Brother character and the current actions of this administration. The next day we will propose a plan to defeat this tyranny, restore our freedom, and destroy the political class that has allowed this deterioration of liberty to occur.
