January, 2024, Part 7, Political Class Insanity: Corruption Thrives In DC, Dumbing Down Teachers In New Jersey, and Claifornia's Financial Death Spiral

Every month we devote posts to just general political class insanity that is running rampant through the country. The members of the American political class continue to show that they are incapable of operating any level of government in this country.

Even their best efforts are almost always inefficient and ineffective at resolving any problem facing Americans. They spend a great amount of time not trying to improve the lives of their citizens but continually ensuring their reelection and enriching themselves, their families, and their friends in the process, all at taxpayer expense.

1)We have often discussed the reality that almost every politician that goes to Washington ends up being very, very wealthy by the time they leave Washington. Be it misuse of campaign funds, donations under the table, using insider government information to make a killing in the stock market, making sure that their friends and family get in on  government contracts, etc., being a Washington politician can be very rewarding financially.

But it  is not just the actual politicians that usually gets rich:

  • Apparently Dixon Slingerland has been a prominent and  important political fundraiser over the years, usually supporting Democratic Party interests.

  • He was a significant campaign donor to Obama and a mayor of Los Angeles.

  • Unfortunately for him, he was recently found guilty of embezzling funds from a non profit organization that he was in charge of to finance a very expensive lifestyle.

  • He was in charge of the Youth Policy Institute, a Federal taxpayer funded non-profit organization that was supposed to alleviate poverty in LA.

  • According to the Department of Justice, he used the Federal taxpayer money of his organization to fund a $6,000 dinner in New York City, hire a private $11,000 tutor for his family, bought almost $2,000 worth of computer equipment and software and in  total  misappropriated $600,000 from the non-profit.

  • He was sentenced to six months in  jail, ordered to pay $750,470 in fines, and do 200 hours of community service.

  • His non-profit received millions of dollars over the years from the Federal  government during which he was not bashful in granting himself an annual  salary of $400,000.

  • He raised almost $750,000 for Obama between  2007 and 2012 and was a frequent Obama White House visitor.

The corruption of the political system does not start and end with the actual politicians, it involves those that know how to milk the system for untold billions of taxpayer dollars every year.

2)The political class in California, as we have  often pointed out, has been a disaster for the residents and businesses in that state: sky high taxes, onerous business regulations, an out of control homelessness and crime situation, mass out-migration of residents and businesses for better quality of life, and wasteful and intrusive spending and  legislation.

And  despite having some of the richest industries in the world headquartered in their state, Hollywood and Silicon Valley:

  • The state government is facing a likely record budget deficit of about $68,000,000,000.

  • This is likely to create a need for severe budget cuts throughout the state government functions, cuts that are likely to drive even  more people  out of the state, further reducing the tax stream and enlarging the deficit.

  • In a recent report from the nonpartisan  Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO), the state government budget deficit is surging.

  • It has gone from $14.3 billion in June to over $54 billion now, i.e. the trend is not good.

  • According to the IRS, California  lost $29 billion in tax revenue in 2021 which came on the heels of losing $18 billion in 2020 as people left the state and shrunk the state economy.

  • Between January, 2020 and July, 2022, the state had a net loss of 700,000 residents.

  • While the state government has $24 billion in cash reserves, those reserves are obviously not enough  to cover this year’s $68 billion deficit and likely large budget deficits in the years to come unless drastic government budgets are shrunk.

We  have  often discussed the real possibility that one of several  states (California Illinois, New York) could very well go bankrupt relatively soon as a result of getting themselves into a financial death spiral: high taxes and high business regulations drive out residents and businesses. This out-migration reduces the tax base which reduces the tax stream resulting in  lower government revenue.

Rather than reduce government  spending, state politicians raise taxes to  compensate for the lower tax revenue which drives more residents and businesses out of the state, further reducing the tax stream. Eventually the state politicians reduce spending which reduces the quality of life and drives more people out of state and the death spiral is underway. Sounds like California is well underway of beating its rival states to bankruptcy court.

3)We recently discussed the reality that the scores on  the ACT college entrance tests have been  declining for ten straight years. We have also discussed the reality that the majority of Baltimore high school  graduates were reading at the third grade level  of below. A recent analysis of Chicago high schools found that not a single kid was performing at their expected average level of proficiency.

The bottom  line is that the over $80 billion we as taxpayers pay every year for the Federal Department of Education has resulted in abysmal  education performance in our public schools. Many other countries, who spend far less on a per student basis for education, educate their kids much better than we do. We are NOT getting value for the dollars we spend for education.

And if a New Jersey teachers union gets its way, our kids are going to continue to get an inferior education in that state:

  • The teachers’ union in that state wants to get rid of basic core competency of its state teachers.

  • The New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) wants to dump the “Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading, Writing and Math.”

  • Yes, we currently do such a horrible job educating our kids now, let’s dumb down the teacher population.

  • The governor of the state,  Phil Murphy, said that it was necessary to get rid of the competency test because it was “an unnecessary barrier” to  hiring  more teachers.

  • Nicki Neily, founder and president of Parents Defending Education, insisted that there were better options for overcoming the teacher shortage other than reducing entry standards: “Teachers should be able to pass a basic skills test before they’re tasked with educating children in those core subjects.”

Insanity. If teachers cannot pass a basic skills test how do we think that the  kids in their  classrooms will be able to pass a basic skills test? Taxpayers are paying more and more and getting less and less from today’s political class.

4)And while we have already discussed the reality that a long time political  donor had been found  guilty of misusing taxpayer funds for self enrichment, let us not forget that Washington politicians are still the premier self enrichment folks involved in government today:

  • An ethics watchdog group, the Foundation For Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) has submitted an  ethics complaint against ten Democratic Congressional  lawmakers.

  • The complaint alleges these politicians used public resources for their own,  partisan political purposes.

  • The accused include Democratic Representatives Nancy Pelosi of California, Cori Bush of Missouri, Jamaal Bowman of New York, Sean Casten of Illinois, Greg Casar of Texas, Maxwell Alejandro Frost of Florida, Ted Lieu of California, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and Ritchie Torres of New York.

  • FACT  maintains that the current law says that government sources and taxpayer wealth cannot be used for “campaign or political purposes”  and that  "official House photographs and video, government buildings, a Member’s official website and social media accounts, and anything created by government employees are strictly off-limits for such purposes.”

  • An example of the corruption was when Nancy Pelosi used a House of Representatives video on a  campaign website for herself.

  • Kendra Arnold, Executive Director of FACT, expressed her concern in the press release, stating, "These violations are rampant and obvious, and clearly the OCE’s failure to act has encouraged continued violations. This failure has also incentivized these Members to use House proceedings for political campaigning rather than doing what is in the best interest of the country."

Another example where the rules are for  ordinary Americans while those in the political class again consider themselves immune to the rules they impose on us.

Enough insanity for today: Washington politicians and their friends are still  corrupt, California politicians are driving their state into  financial  ruin, and New Jersey dumbs down its teachers.

October, 2019, Part 7, Political Class Insanity: NYC Goes Orwellian, Journalism Losses Its Integrity, and New Jersey Governor Imitates Marie Antoinette

It is another month which means it is again time to review the latest political class insanity from Washington and around the world. Political class insanity takes many forms including the wasting of taxpayer wealth, criminal fraud within government programs, inane and stupid political quotes and actions, the inability to create and implement effective and efficient government programs, stupid and ill performing economic policies and strategies, and other forms of insanity that continue to evolve and surprise and shock us.

Let’s get started:

1) Novelist George Orwell, writing in his classic novel “1984,” stated that “manipulation of language as a weapon of mind control and abuse of power.” Control the language and you can control the conversation and wherever there is control there is a loss of freedom.

Which is the situation in New York City as a result of a recent law that it enacted:
  • The law has banned people from threatening anyone by calling them an “illegal alien.”
  • If found guilty of hatefully calling someone an illegal alien the penalty could be a fine up to a quarter million dollars.
  • It is illegal to use the term even though from a Federal government perspective, it is an accepted legal definition.
  • What exactly it means to use it in a hateful or threatening way has not been defined by the law so it is obviously open to interpretation and abuse.
  • And it obviously is an affront to the First Amendment, a city government and mayor cannot go around and banning someone from saying two words regardless of how and when they are said.
  • Which means after a long legal battle, the law will be struck down as being un-Constitutional and a whole lot of time, energy, and resources would have been wasted for nothing.
Besides being repugnant and illegal, why was such effort put forth on this waste of time? Would not have political efforts and capital been better spent on fixing a lousy school system, helping the homeless on the streets of the city, repairing the crumbling subway system, etc.? So many major things broken affecting millions of city residents and the politicians in the city focus on this tripe. Insane.

2) We have always claimed that a free, unbiased press is critical to the maintenance of democracy. A free press keeps an eye on the greed and corruption of the political class and should be educating citizens on facts and allowing those citizens to make informed judgments based on all of the facts and realities of the issue.

But we have also claimed that the field of journalism today is not doing what the Founders hoped they would do via the First Amendment. Media outlets today are themselves biased. corrupt, and always working an agenda rather than being good, unbiased journalists. This reality was vividly and recently pointed out by some stupid and biased comments from an MSNBC broadcast:
  • Gabriel Sherman, a Vanity Fair writer, was recently interviewed on an MSNBC telecast.
  • The topic of discussion was the faux impeachment drive that Democrats in the House are trying to put together without any real evidence of anything.
  • Without pointing out any evidence of substance, Sherman said that the case for impeachment was so simple that “even the Fox audience can understand” how guilty Trump is.
  • The obvious cruel insinuation is that Fox viewers are so stupid.
This is obviously no way to have an adult conversation on the issues of the time. This is no way to be an unbiased and respectful journalist. Another example of media news bias and disgrace.

Oh, Mr. Sherman, by the way, the Fox News audience is more than twice the size of the audience of CNN and MSNBC COMBINED so I am pretty sure that in sheer numbers Fox viewers may be as smart as the viewers of your outlet.

3) But Sherman is not the only condescending “journalist” on TV these days who is as biased and hateful as Sherman. Jake Trapper of CNN recently was talking about impeachment and said that: “He [Trump] has an army of trolls [that support him.]” So in Tapper’s mind, a great number of Trump supporters, ordinary American citizens, are nothing but mindless “trolls” in his Tapper’s mind.

Cannot get more spiteful than that. Again, talk about not being unbiased, not searching out for truths and realities like a real journalist would. Just mindlessly calling millions of citizens trolls because you disagree with their political preferences.

Two examples, Sherman and Tapper, why I fear for democracy in this country because the press and journalism in this country have lost the only thing that made them a valuable part of a free nation: their integrity. And when you lose your integrity it is very, very difficult to get it back.

Oh, by the way Mr. Tapper, you have so few trolls tuning into CNN that many nights your ratings and CNN ratings fall below the audience levels of the Hallmark channel and shows like “Cupcake Wars” on the Food Channel. Again, the loss of integrity, when integrity is the only thing your professional stands for, is a terrible thing to waste.

4) I was born, grew up, and spent much of my working life in New Jersey so it obviously by original home state. Thus, I saw first hand for many, many years the wasteful and irresponsible spending of state taxpayer wealth on failed projects, greedy political, etc.

I moved to Florida 14 years ago and have probably saved over $130,000 in lower property taxes and a non-existent state income tax in Florida. This all came to mind today when I found out how the current governor of New Jersey was still wasting taxpayer wealth back in New Jersey:
  • According to Brent Johnson, writing for the website, NJ.com, current NJ governor, Patrick Murphy, spent over $1 million on a satellite governor’s office for himself in Newark, New Jersey.
  • This is one millions dollars spent, not on his primary office in the state capital where he will spend the vast majority of his time, but on a secondary office that he will likely use very infrequently.
  • He already had a Newark office but decided he deserved a larger office in that city, at a cost of $1 million.
  • But it gets better: the annual rental cost, which taxpayers will pay, of the new office will be more than $145,000 a year compared to the original, smaller office which cost less than $45,000 in annual rent.
  • The governor tried to defend this outrageous spending of taxpayer wealth by declaring that having an office in Newark, the state’s biggest city was important.
  • But he misses the point: he already had an office in the city, he just wanted a bigger, more lavish one and spending $1 million of someone else’s money was his way to get it.
As with most pompous politicians, such a bad set of priorities:
  • How many homeless and hungry New Jersey folks could have gotten a meal or two out of that unnecessary $1 million one time investment and the $100,000 more that he is paying in annual rent?
  • How many drug addicted New Jersey folks could have gotten some addiction treatment out of that unnecessary $1 million one time investment and the $100,000 more that he is paying in annual rent?
  • How many computers could have been purchased for inner city school kids out of that unnecessary $1 million one time investment and the $100,000 more that he is paying in annual rent.
  • Patrick Murphy’s “let them eat cake moment:” I want a million dollar new office, other human priorities be damned.
That will do it for this month’s insanity: wasting money on unnecessary office space, the loss of integrity and the resulting danger to democracy from the mainstream media, and NYC goes Orwellian. More insanity sure to follow next month.

July, 2019, Part 7,Political Class Insanity: Kamala Harris Is Running For Queen, Stupid Gun Control Laws and the Hypocrisy of Biden and Sanders

1) Democrats running for President have been very hard on corporate America and Trump’s business tax cuts. Never mind that American companies create untold wealth and economic growth and that the Trump tax cuts have led to historically low unemployment rates for all sections of Americans.

And Obama was no better as he tried to close out a business loophole from a tax perspective. But do not tell Joe Biden any of this, a man who is both a Democratic Presidential candidate and Obama’s Vice President:

  • According to Brittany De Lea, writing for Fox Business News on July 10, 2019, Biden exploited a business tax loophole to tremendous self enrichment levels, a business tax loophole that Obama had tried to eliminate.
  • Apparently Biden and his wife have taken profits from their book sales and speeches and funneled them through S corporations in order to minimize their tax impacts.
  • This S corporation strategy saved them about $500,000 in Federal taxes.
  • This allowed the Bidens to avoid massive payroll taxes such as Social Security and Medicare.
  • And despite being just a politician, Biden and his wife have earned a remarkable $15 million in the TWO years since he left office.
All of this is legal. But the hypocrisy of demonizing American businesses when you are using tax loopholes to avoid paying taxes that most other Americans are paying and then leveraging a lackluster political career into millions and millions of dollars shows that our political processes continue to be so broken.

2) According to Gallup polling, gun control is about the 20th most important issue that concerns Americans. That means that there are 19 or so more important things that politicians should be focusing on before tackling a likely fictitious issue called gun control.

But that has not stopped Presidential candidate Kamala Harris from harping on the need for gun control, even if it means violating the Constitution:

  • Harris recently dropped the un-Constitutional threat that if Congress does not act on her gun control plans she will violate the Constitution and do whatever she wants.
  • Her words: “Gun violence is the leading cause of death for young Black men in America. We must stop this. When president, I will take executive action to ensure guns do not fall into the wrong hands.”
  • And not only is she threatening to bypass the Constitution she issued an ultimatum to Congress: if Congress does not do what she demands within the first 100 days she will ignore them and do what she wants.
Not sure Harris is running for President or a queen, where she does whatever she wants, the Constitution be damned. Insanity.

3) But Harris is not the only "damn the Second Amendment" politician out there. New Jersey’s governor, Phil Murphy, recently signed four new gun control bills. This is about a year after he signed six other gun control laws.

Components of these laws include the following:

  • Every gun dealer in the state now has to sell at least one “smart gun” that can only be fired by designated users.
  • Criminals that previously had convictions of carjacking and making terroristic threats can now no longer buy guns in the state.
  • It is now a third degree crime if someone tries to obtain a gun who is not allowed to have one.
  • Encourages, not requires, gun retail dealers and operators of shooting ranges to attend a suicide prevention course.
And Murphy and the New Jersey political class are not done, other gun restrictions are pending:

  • Require guns to be locked away when the New Jersey gun owner leaves their home or premises.
  • Make it a second-degree crime in New Jersey to act as a straw purchaser and a third-degree crime to transport, sell or possess a firearm without a federally licensed serial number.
  • Require gun owners in the state to renew their gun id card every four years and prove they have attended a gun safety training course.
  • Require that a New Jerseyan be at least 21 years old in order to buy gun ammunition in the state.
  • Require ammunition sales outlets to report their sales to the State Police.
A few questions for the governor:

  • Do we really think that gun toting criminals are going to go to a gun safety course every four years?
  • Do we really think that gun toting criminals are going to renew their gun id card every four years?
  • Do we really think that gun toting criminals care what the degree of criminality exists?
  • Do we really think that gun toting criminals care about smart guns?
  • Do we really think that gun toting criminals care about locking up their guns when not home?
  • Do we really think gun toting criminals care it is a third-degree crime to transport, sell or possess a firearm without a federally licensed serial number?
Thus, new laws will restrict and make it more difficult for New Jersey citizens to utilize their Second Amendment rights while it will have no impact on criminals. Why? Because they are criminals, not a complex concept. Insane.

4) According to a recent Godfather Politics article by Warner Todd Huston, Senator and Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders quite the hypocrite when comes to having a minimum wage of $15 an hour:

  • Sanders has hassled companies like McDonalds and Walmart for underpaying these companies’ employees.
  • He has been a national advocate for a Federal mandated $15 an hour minimum wage.
  • But his hypocrisy was uncovered when it recently became known that while he has badgering private companies to raise their employees wages to at least $15 an hour, he does not pay many of his staff this level of wages, with many of them getting only $13 an hour.
  • An organized group of Bernie’s employees have sent a letter to Sanders campaign manager, Faiz Shakir: “Many field staffers are barely managing to survive financially, which is severely impacting our team’s productivity and morale. Some field organizers have already left the campaign as a result.”
But this is usually what happens in socialism dominated countries. The elite make the big bucks and despite promises of socialistic programs, regular citizens always get the short end of the stick. Elitist Sanders is a millionaire many times over, owner of at least three different homes in different parts of the country, but despite his high rhetoric he shortchanges his own employees. The hypocrisy is blatant and very telling.

That will do it for today: Democrats focus on a minor issue relative to Americans priorities and rich politicians consider themselves above the law and not bound by decency or integrity. More insanity to follow.
