The Latest Washington Myth - The Obama Administration has "Improved the Tranquility Of the Global Community".....Not

About a week or go we tried to make the case that the Obama administration is nothing more than a version of the television sitcom, “Car 54.” that series centered on the comedic exploits of two bumbling police officers, Toody and Muldoon, who always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time or completely out of touch and no effective in doing their duties.

This kind of reminded me of the Obama administration, out of touch, ineffective, and clueless about how to do their jobs.(Note: to be fair, I would also apply this description to the entire political class in Washington, I am not just picking on the Obama administration). We felt the analogy was so strong that we actually rewrote the lyrics to the Car 54 theme song to adapt it to the ineffectiveness and detachment from reality of the Obama administration, the effort of which can be accessed at:

This Car 54 theory was recently reinforced when the White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, put forth the most incredulous statement, that the Obama administration had “substantially improved the tranquility of the global community.” Astounding if the White House actually believes this line or is living in a different reality from the rest of us and the growing turbulence in the world (turbulence = lack of tranquility). I cannot tell which is which.

White house Press Corp reporters were quick to react to this nonsense:
  • A number of reporters referred to a front-page Wall Street Journal article from that same day which highlighted many of the world crises currently going on around the world and with the Journal concluding “the breadth of global instability now unfolding hasn’t been seen since the late 1970s.”
  • Fox News white House reporter asked: “How does the White House react to the notion that the president is a bystander to all these crises?” The reporter cited the impasse in the Iranian nuclear talks, the conflict in and around Gaza, and the Syrian civil war as areas of the world where the word tranquility is not the appropriate adjective.
  • ABC News’ White House reporter Jon Karl quoted Attorney General Eric Holder’s assessment in a recent interview that the terrorist potential arising from Westerners returning home after fighting in Syria was “more frightening than anything I think I’ve seen as attorney general.” Again, not a very tranquil assessment.

But Earnest stuck to this ridiculous position during the questioning: “I think that there have been a number of situations in which you’ve seen this administration intervene in a meaningful way, that has substantially furthered American interests and substantially improved the, uh, you know, the – the tranquility of the global community.”

Let’s take a quick look around the world and see if there is an sanity to this White House position:
  • Syria is still wracked by a brutal civil war that has gone on for years and which has killed hundreds of thousands of people and made refugees of millions.
  • Russia is fighting a surrogate war against the Ukraine with its surrogates recently shooting down an unarmed passenger jet and killing about 300 innocent travelers.
  • Crazy Islamic radicals have taken over a huge swath or northern Iraq and are declaring a new, radical Islamic state that you know will be anything but tranquil.
  • Terror attacks are occurring all over Iraq as Sunnis try to kill Shiites and visa versa wherever they find each other and in the process, often end up slaughtering Christians and other minority religious followers in the process.
  • The crazies of Hamas in the Gaza Strip are in a real war with the Israeli defense forces by trying to preserve their ability to shoot rockets deep into Israel and tunnel into Israel and launch terror attacks against civilians.
  • China is ticking off just about every one of its neighbors in a sea and territory grab in the South China Sea.
  • Although Earnest tried to claim the elimination of chemical weapons from Syria as an Obama success story, he failed to mention that 1) Putin was the driver of the effort to rid Syria of its chemical weapons supplies, Obama just wanted to bomb Syria, 2) it is not a given that all of the chemical weapons have been removed and it is probably a fact that the Syrians have switched to different chemical weapons, e.g. chlorine, that were not included in the agreement of removal, and 3) the facilities that produce those chemical weapons are still in existence, many months after they should have been destroyed. Three points that make Earnest’s claim to fame here moot.
  • The West and Iran have still not figured out a way to keep Iran from gaining a nuclear weapons capability.
  • North Korea has quietly forged ahead with its effort to put its nuclear weapons on top of intercontinental missiles.
  • Obama was a co-conspirator in overthrowing the Gadaffi government in Libya by unilaterally, illegally, and unconstitutionally innovating the United States in that civil war that had nothing to do with our security or energy needs. This mess gave us the Benghazi slaughter of four Americans and has now devolved so much the U.S. has pulled all of its diplomatic personnel out of the country because of the new civil war that is raging across the country.
  • The U.S. fostered violence in Libya has spread to nearby Mali.
  • The Nigerian Islamic terrorist group Boko Haram is attacking cities and abducting and enslaving their female children.
  • Japan has started to rebuild its defense forces in response to Chinese provocations in the area around Japan.
  • In Central America, powerful drug cartels and other criminal gangs have made that area one of the most violent in the world. So much so that families are shipping their kids thousands of miles north in an attempt to force them into the U.S.
  • Anti-Semitism violence and riots are on the uptick across Europe.
  • Chicago, the city with the nation’s strongest and most stringent gun control laws, is far from tranquil, sometimes seeing dozens killed over a weekend, most due to drug gangs and drug activities.
Have we missed any other “non-tranquil” word hot spots? Probably, but let’s stop the list here. A couple of observations:
  • While a few of these crises predate the Obama administration, e.g. Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the Israeli/Palestinians situation, the majority of them have arisen solely during the Obama administration, e.g. the Russia and Ukranian fighting, Chinese antagonisms, etc. Even those that predate Obama, they have gotten worse during his administration.
  • Thus, I am at a loss to figure out how the press secretary possibly came to the conclusion that this Presidency “substantially improved the tranquility of the global community.” What color is the sky in he world where these people live? What reality do they live in?
The first step in addressing any human deficiency is self recognition that the deficiency exists. It seems as if the Obama administration is very, very far away from taking that first step and recognizing that it has been a near total failure on the foreign relations front, especially when it comes to calming the world and making it more tranquil.

Maybe that is why the President does so many golf outings, vacations, and fundraisers. At wealthy donor homes, plush country clubs, and high end vacation spots, I bet it is very tranquil. But in the rest of the world, that is certainly not the case, no matter how ignorant and stupid Josh Earnest thinks we are.

Thus, the car 54 analogy stands. Biden and Obama are just our version of Toody and Muldoon when it comes to calming the trouble spots around the world.
