September, 2014 I Am A Global Warming Doubter and A Believer In Science, Part 1: The Arctic Ice Cap Is Growing and Other Climate Change Realities

On a semi-regular basis we have taken an in-depth look at ALL pertinent and relevant global warming/climate change data, statistics, trends, and science under the theme, “I am a global warming doubter and a believer in science.” It was our feeling and position that the people who believed and supported the theory that humanity’s actions was causing global warming and climate change were not being completely honest in their discussion.

It seemed that they were cherry picking information to prove their point rather than looking at all of the information available to reach a scientifically sound basis. To make matters worse, their attitudes to towards those of us that were believers in science but were skeptical about the whole global warming thesis to be honest with you just ticked us off. People like Al Gore go about bashing folks like ourselves, calling them ignorant of science, racists, homophobes, and other derogatory names just because we want to look at the entire picture, just not a slanted, narrow and quite possibly incorrect view of reality.

Past discussions under this theme in this blog can be accessed by entering “I am a global warming doubter” in the search box above. By reviewing those discussions and posts with an open mind, you will find that the science on man made global warming/climate change is far from settled, contrary to the views of global warming advocates. That conclusion is further verified by the latest research and realities that will be discussed below in today’s post and probably over the next few days.

1) One of the things that drive us doubters crazy is the denial of reality by the people like Al Gore that refuse to look at real life data and realities that are contrary to their views. Even when reality smacks them in the face, even when their forecasted events never take place, they still cling to their narrow view of science and data to prove they were never wrong about global warming.

About seven years ago, Al Gore predicted that things were getting so bad that global warming could lead to the Arctic ice cap being “completely gone” by the year 2014.

Well, since it is now 2014 and the ice cap is still with us, this is another global warming prediction that proved to be false. In fact, according to scientific sources and data cited in a recent article in the UK’s Daily Mail newspaper, the Arctic ice cap is actually expanding rapidly, not shrinking rapidly:
  • According to the article, the Arctic ice cap has expanded by 41% over the past two years.
  • If this is indeed true, the ice cap has made up all of the ice mass which it lost between 2009 and 2012.
  • The article claims that satellite images show that the summer Arctic ice cap is thicker and covers 1.7 million square kilometers more than just two years ago.
  • This area is twice the size of Alaska.
  • The satellite images taken from University of Illinois's Cryosphere project, using daily satellite readings issued by the US National Snow and Ice Data Center, verify this finding.
  • The latest readings of the ice cap size were highest levels recorded since 2006.
  • The article goes on to cite other sources including the Danish Meteorological Institute whose analysis and data indicate that the growth has been even more dramatic.
  • Using a different measurement, the Danish Meteorological Institute that the ice cap has grown by 63% in size and is thicker than in the recent past, making it less susceptible to future melting.
Now, some global warming advocates might shoot the messenger here, the Daily Mail, since it is not a part of the “mainstream” U.S. press. But given the sourced data and information, shouldn’t a true believer in science investigate the claims to be sure that critical data and realities are not excluded from the discussion?

But if people like Al Gore did indeed look at ALL data and all science, then they might prove that their views were wrong and that usually is a truth a global warming advocate usually cannot handle.

The entire Daily Mail article can be accessed at:

2) A Senate minority report on global warming/climate change was recently published by the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on September 4, 2014: “Critical Thinking on Climate Change - Empirical Evidence to Consider Before Taking
Regulatory Action and Implementing Economic Policies.”
The report is a comprehensive review of the latest science and realities as it applies to the global warming/climate change debate in Washington.

The document is well sourced, easy to read despite a lot of the science referenced and is the type of information that should be used to formulate scientifically based legislation. The entire publication can be accessed at:

Rather than try to explain all ninety or so pages of the research, I will give you the highlights below and allow you to dive deeper in to the publications' findings, research, and conclusions on your own.

Top line conclusions on our changing climate dispute the assertions of people like Al Gore:
  • Rising sea levels due to climate change? Nope, sea levels are stable.
  • Increased frequency of wildfires due to climate change? Nope, the incidence rate of wildfires is down.
  • More severe weather due to climate change? Nope, sever weather frequency is normal.
  • Increased frequency and intensity of hurricanes due to climate change? Nope, frequency and intensity of hurricanes are down.
  • Dwindling number of polar bears due to climate change? Nope, no discernible drop in populations of polar bears,
  • Increased accuracy of climate change computer forecasting models? Nope, models get worse and worse as time goes by in their predictive accuracy.
The publication also takes a look at what is happening in other countries relative to climate change:

1. Australia repealed their carbon tax after the severe and negative economic consequences of such regulation was recognized.

2. Australia is now investigating serious concerns with corruption of the temperature records to falsely and artificially produce a warming trend that did not exist. The publication points out that it is important to note that similar charges and concerns have been raised with in other countries and with other scientists who were caught and/or accused of changing real life data to better fit their non-real life models and hypotheses.

3. The economic impacts in European Union countries that adopted climate regulations, including Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom have been disastrous. Serious concerns are now being raised over the economic viability of their manufacturing sectors as well as budget and energy poverty concerns.

4. The poor and elderly are suffering the worst consequences from
these policies.

5. India has since identified Greenpeace as an economic threat,
with Greenpeace long having a record of making significant, scientifically implausible claims.

6. China and India, the two countries whose economic growth is resulting in the bigger and bigger use of coal for power, have indicated that they will not attend the UN summit conference in New York City this year.

7. Only 11 of the 144 original parties to the Kyoto Protocol have thus far signed an extension.

Thus, two overall conclusions drop out of this effort, conclusions that are not at all different than the conclusions we have already come to a number of times in previous posts based on different scientific data and realities:
  1. All of the dire predictions of people like Al Gore, relative to man made activities and the negative effects on the earth’s health, have not come true.
  2. Even if the U.S. was to embark on a sever climate change/carbon footprint reduction effort, any savings in the world’s overall carbon footprint in this country would be substantially offset by the increased carbon footprint of other countries who are increasing their use of carbon intensive coal (e.g. China and India), not signing up for the Kyoto protocol extension, and who are backing off other carbon reduction activities because of economic hardships
Thus, the U.S. would be severely crimping our economy well being for a problem that might not even exist in the face of other countries who do not care.

That will do it for today. More realities relative to the Arctic ice cap and a well sourced, well written review of today’s global warming/climate change reality prove once again that it is perfectly logical and sane to be a global warming doubter and a believer in science, despite what Al Gore thinks and what slurs he might cast.

And the best news for doubters: we are not done with this update. We will need at least one more day to further prove that doubters are realists that look at all science and all realities.

March, 2014: I Am A Global Warming Doubter and A Believer In Science, Part 2

On a regular basis we revisit an ongoing topic in this blog called “I am a global warming doubter and a believer in science.” This series is in rebuttal to people like Al Gore and President Obama and their incorrect and deception assertion that ALL scientists support the concept of man made global warming, or its rebranded theme of climate change.

The latest update on science and this topic was posted Friday and can be accessed at:

The first post in the previous series can be accessed at:

We were not able to finish our review and update yesterday so we needed today to prove again that it is more than possible to be a global warming doubter, a believer in science, and likely be right on both counts.

1) In 2008, Al Gore was interviewed by CBS’s Leslie Stahl on "60 Minutes" when he asserted, "I think those people [global warming doubters] are in such a tiny, tiny minority now with their point of view. They're almost like the ones who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the world is flat." However, according to a Newsmax article that was published shortly after that interview:
  • Dr. Arthur Robinson of the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, (OISM) announced the results of a petition drive asking scientists to sign a petition if they were global warming doubters
  • The petition read as follows: “We urge the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto Japan in December 1997, and any other similar proposals. The proposed limit on greenhouse gasses would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind.”
  • The petition results again showed that Gore was either being deceptive or ignorant of reality since an amazing 31,072 Americans with university degrees in science, including 9,021 Ph.D.s, signed that petition that flatly denies Al Gore’s claims that human-caused global warming is a settled scientific fact.
  • This effort was consistent with a previous effort back in 2001 which involved another petition effort, an effort led by Dr. Frederick Seitz, past president of the National Academy of Sciences and of Rockefeller University.
  • That petition gathered an impressive 17,800 signatures of scientists who also indicated they were global warming doubters.
  • In both cases, 31,072 and 17,800 scientists’ signatures, could they be considered a “tiny, tiny minority.”
  • In most, if not all, of the cases I would bet that these scientists support the fact the we actually did go to the moon and believe that the world is not flat.
Somebody once said if you tell a lie often enough it eventually becomes the perceived truth. Al Gore keeps telling this lie but almost 50,000 instances of scientists opposing his lie and deception should be enough to keep it from becoming the perceived truth. As Dr. Robinson explained in the Newsmax article, OISM’s petition project was to show the assertion of “settled science” and an overwhelming “consensus” in favor of the hypothesis of human-caused global warming and consequent climate damage is just plain wrong.

2) Friday, we reviewed, and somewhat mocked an Al Gore assertion from five years ago when he boldly predicted that within five years or so the North Pole could be completely melted. That prediction could not have been any further from the truth since the average temperatures around the world have not increased since that prediction and the North Pole ice cap has actually been growing over the past few years, not disappearing.

Let’s look at a few other Al Gore quotes through the years:

- “The planet has a fever. If your baby has a fever, you go to the doctor. If the doctor says you need to intervene here, you don’t say, ‘Well, I read a science fiction novel that told me it’s not a problem.’ If the crib’s on fire, you don’t speculate that the baby is flame retardant. You take action.”

Comment: according to real measurements of temperatures, the fever broke, assuming there was a fever, about sixreen years ago when the earth’s surface temperatures stopped rising, contrary to what EVERY global warming forecast said it would be doing.

- “Here is the truth: The Earth is round; Saddam Hussein did not attack us on 9/11; Elvis is dead; Obama was born in the United States; and the climate crisis is real.”

Comment: About 50,000 scientists that signed the two petitions discussed above would differ from this assertion of the climate crisis being real.

- “The interior of the earth is extremely hot – several million degrees.”

Comment: Mr. Gore needs to do a little bit of simple research in order to not let his credibility take another hit, especially on something that is easily tested. Every source I checked estimate that the center of the earth is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus, how can we trust what he says about global warming if he exaggerates on this simple scientific fact?

- “Many scientists are now warning that we are moving closer to several “tipping points” that could — within as little as 10 years — make it impossible for us to avoid irretrievable damage to the planet’s habitability for human civilization.”

Comment: Note how he said many scientists, not all scientists? Maybe he is starting to doubt himself a little also. Anyway, since he said those remarks at NYU’s law school in 2006 the ice caps have gotten larger and the temperatures have stopped rising so those tipping points may have to be recalculated.

He has said a lot of other stuff but let’s cut it here. His predictions have been wrong so many times that his credibility is in a shambles. A million degrees at the center of the earth, really.

3) Okay, let’s let a few other folks take over this discussion. The following link is to a 12 minute cartoon that lays out many of the logical conclusions, based on scientific data, of global warming doubters. It is done in a fun, informative way with a few mild swear words but it is chock full of scientific rebuttals to people like Al Gore:

4) If you liked the logic and sensibility of that video, check out this one. It basically has an off camera narrator going through a logical progression of reasons and rationality of why there is merit, indeed virtue, being a global warming doubter based on scientific fact and reality:

That should do it for now in our continuing series of showing there is true scientific merit in being a global warming doubter, regardless of what the likes of Al Gore say. The bottom line is that maybe man made global warming is a reality. If so, we should all work together to find a solution that minimizes the impact to the environment AND the economic well being of Americans.

In fact, we have already proposed such a solution, a solution that would accomplish both of these objective regardless of whether or not global warming is a myth or a reality. That plan can be accessed at:

However, two things will stop this rational and sane approach to problem solving to ever take hold:

1) People like Al Gore and others continue to insult the intelligence and humanity of global warming doubters. Gore has likened people like us to racists, homophobes, conspiracy theory nuts, and a host of other insults and unflattering names. President Obama has called global warming doubters believers in the earth being flat. It makes it difficult to have a give and take, adult conversation when one side continues to yell, scream, and hurl insults at the other side. They are the ones that are intolerant and close minded, they are the ones that are preventing an adult conversation on the possibility of global warming.

2) If global warming is a reality, there is nothing the United States can do that would matter in the whole picture unless the rest of the world, notably China, India, Brazil, and other fast growing and carbon spewing economies also follow suit. As an example of what we are talking about, consider:
  • A January, 2014 article by Bloomberg reviewed a recent study that found Chinese pollution contributes to pollution in California, Oregon and Washington. China's nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide gases contribute to at least one extra day of smog per year in Los Angeles, and the Chinese pollution reaching the West Coast exceeds Federal ozone standards. Thus, Chinese manufacturing and minimal pollution controls are already negatively affecting the U.S. and the environment, a situation that would have to be resolved for any domestic global warming steps to be effective.
  • The Week magazine reported on August 30, 2013 that Ecuador has given up on trying to protect the Amazon from oil drilling after having failed to do so over the past six years. More oil drilling, larger carbon footprint, moslty for the Chinese economy.
  • In that same issue, another article pointed out Brazil will now devote all of its oil royalties to education and health care going forward. Thus, it is difficult to believe they will cut back on their oil drilling if it negatively affects education and health care in that country.
However, given that the rest of the world has little respect for this Presidential administration, the chances of Obama leading the world forward in a united global warming crusade is next to nothing.

That will do it for now but we will revisit the issue going forward where I am sure there will be more science showing that global warming is quite possibly a myth and Al Gore will keep insulting those of us that are global warming doubters but believers in science.

I Am A Global Warming Doubter and Believer In Science, Part 1 Update: I Believe CERN Before I Believe Al Gore

Today begins a multiple part series on “global warming,” or as the new brand campaign goes, “climate change.” Having been unable to prove that global warming definitively exists, those in support of global warming have expanded their definition of environmental disaster into a broader, more murky concept called climate change. Their purpose, of course, is to prove that mankind is perverting nature and causing widespread environmental damage, actions that require massive government and political class intrusion into our lives and our freedoms.

Those of us that have expressed our doubts about global warming have been the target of childish and brutal slurs by those that believe in the global warming process. Al Gore, the most ardent global warming supporter, has been the most vocal and disgusting taunter of those that have their doubts. We will review his latest slurs in a few days but constantly yelling at someone who does have quite a bit of science on their side in an effort to convince them of your point of view is stupid and fruitless.

Today and tomorrow we will review some summary findings from previous posts that we have done in this blog under the theme, “I am a global warming doubter but a believer in science.” See, those that doubt the many global warming theories are often accused of being blind to reality and not believing in the “science” of global warming.

We must be ignorant dunces not to believe what Al Gore states. These previous posts debunk that fallacy by reviewing a slew of scientific findings and research from credible scientific sources that cast many a doubt on global warming, now climate change, hysteria.

The detailed original posts from “I am a global warming doubter but believer in science” can be accessed at:

The following is a summary of the detailed findings that can be read at these links, a summary which we will complete tomorrow. After these two days of summary, we will look at the latest scientific findings and research that further support our position that you can be a believer and devotee of science but still have serious doubts of anything Al Gore states.

1) A climate study published in the journal, Nature, in the summer of 2012 seemed to debunk previous claims that earth’s temperatures in recent decades are in any way historic. The research study was done by Professor Dr. Jan Esper at the Institute of Geography at Johannes Gutenberg University.

He used tree-ring density measurements from ancient pine trees native to Finnish Lapland to produce a climate reconstruction reaching back to 138 BC. He found that the earth’s climate was much hotter on this planet during Roman times than previously believed, long before man was driving cars around and throwing carbon into the atmosphere.

According to the article, his researchers were able to precisely demonstrate that the long-term trend over the past two millennia has been towards climatic cooling. According to Dr. Esper: "We found that previous estimates of historical temperatures during the Roman era and the Middle Ages were too low. Such findings are also significant with regard to climate policy, as they will influence the way today's climate changes are seen in context of historical warm periods."

A novel scientific approach, based on scientific data and measurement that casts some serious doubt on the assertion that we are in a unique period of man made global warming.

2) The data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), as reported in several sources including the website Real Science:

indicate that the Antarctic ice cap has never been larger. If global warming is occurring, and the Antarctic ice cap is many times larger than the Arctic ice cap, why is the southern hemisphere ice cap bigger than ever? I have no idea, I am not an expert on these things, but it seems a reasonable question to ask and try to answer in light of what the global warming alarmists are trying to tell us.

In fact, as we will review in a couple of days when we review the latest global warming findings, the Artic ice cap grew tremendously in the past year, making it larger and more expansive than it is been in quite a while. Is global warming, climate change causing more ice to form in the Arctic?

3) On March 28, 2012, a joint letter signed by 49 former NASA engineers, astronauts, and scientists was sent to upper management personnel at NASA, accusing NASA of short circuiting the scientific process by presupposing certain facts and theories that support the man made global warming theory without a sound basis for doing so.

The attached signatures of the 49 people included their years of NASA service and included veterans with over thirty and forty years of service. Now, none of these 49 appeared to be experts in climate studies. However, most of them appear to be experts in scientific methods, methods that they felt were not being properly used or not being used at all to support the man made global warming theory. They are like myself, believers in science but perhaps doubters of the man made global warming theory.

4) According to a recent article in Slate.com written by Bjorn Lomborg:
  • In 2012, United States’ carbon emissions, the assumed culprit in man made global warming, dropped to their lowest level in 20 years.
  • The emissions are down 14% from their peak in 2007. The main reason for the drop is not due to government intervention in the marketplace with massive legislation, taxes, and bureaucracy but the simple fact that the growth in natural gas development, mostly via fracking, which has resulted in low cost natural gas availability.
  • High gas availability has led to lower prices and costs for natural gas which has led utilities to increase the use of cleaner burning gas vs. dirtier burning coal, which is about twice as carbon intensive than gas.
  • In total, the U.S. carbon emissions dropped by a whopping 500 megatons a year, about twice the total impact of the infamous Kyoto Protocol on emissions throughout the rest of the world, without any cap and trade laws being passed.
Looks like we are doing exactly what the global warming advocates want us to do, reducing carbon emissions, but that is happening due to nothing the government is doing but because of scientific and technical breakthroughs in mining energy sources. In fact, I would contend that this great leap in reducing carbon emissions would not have happened if the political class got involved and mucked up the market forces that led to the reduced emissions.

5) Several years ago the Environment Protection Agency suppressed a report from one of its own employees that called into question and raised doubts about the validity of the global warming theory. The author, Alan Carlin, an EPA employee, was told not to release his findings and was also told to discontinue working on climate change issues entirely.

Carlin and his co-authors accused the EPA and other government agencies of ignoring scientific analysis that is casting doubt on global warming and for relying too much on the work of outside organizations that "have tended to accept the findings reached by outside groups, particularly the IPCC and the CCSP, as being correct without a careful and critical examination of their conclusions and documentation." Their report also went into some degree of detail which contests the global warming claims of these organizations.

I have no idea if Carlin's accusations and report are accurate and valid. But as someone who believes in the scientific process, the report should have been released and rebutted on a factual, peer reviewed, scientific basis. Instead, he was told by his boss at the EPA, Al McGartland, "Please do not have any direct communications with anyone outside of (our group) on endangerment. There should be no meetings, e-mails, written statements, phone calls, etc." Not very scientific, and very suspicious, when you suppress data, research, and analyses just because it conflicts with your view. That is not science, that is politics.

6) An article in the December 9, 2012 issue of The Week magazine reviewed how a recently released set of illegally hacked emails, taken from the leading global warming science establishments, one in England and one in New Zealand, cast doubt on whether those scientists who believe man made activities are causing global warming are actually being unbiased in their work.

According to the article, the emails reveal that the people working in these establishments state that their global warming forecasts models are not correctly predicting reality, that they needed to ensure that “inconvenient data are ‘well hidden’ though various tricks.” According to Christopher Caldwell, writing in the Financial Times, after reviewing at least some of the emails, the scientists "openly discuss how to make the threat of climate change seem as urgent as possible and how best to wage a political and PR campaign against their perceived enemies."

It gets very scary, and very suspicious, when scientists admit that their models do not work, their science and data are being manipulated, and they are just as involved in PR campaigns and politics as they are in research. Hardly a scientific approach or mindset.

7) According to an article in the Boston Globe, Ivar Giaever, a Nobel laureate, quit as a fellow of the American Physical Society over the Society's unequivocal position that man made global warming is "incontrovertible" and his personal position that no "scientific assertion is so sacred that it cannot be contested."

As a Nobel laureate, I am assuming that Mr. Giaever is well aware of unbiased scientific research protocols and procedures in order to find the truth. I am also assuming that that the accusations he puts forth against the American Physical Society are based on data, reports, or actions he witnessed and were not made up. If they were, I am also assuming that a reputable paper like the Boston Globe would not have published them.

8) The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is comprised of some of the top physics scientists in the world. CERN is the organization that is primarily responsible for the development of the World Wide Web and it built the multi billion dollar Large Hadron Collider in Europe. It is affiliated with 8,000 scientists at more than 600 universities in 60 countries. I do not think there is any doubt that CERN is the epitome of quality, unbiased scientific research.

In the summer of 2011, CERN scientists conducted global warming experiments where they actually modeled global warming conditions in a lab environment. To do so, they "built a pristinely clean stainless steel chamber that precisely recreated the earth's atmosphere." (Source: European Union Times, September 3, 2011). The experiments they conducted were carried out by 17 European and American institutes and 63 CERN scientists. Their findings were then written up and published in the highly acclaimed scientific publication/journal, Nature.

Their findings and conclusions: the sun's changing cosmic rays and their role in cloud formation, rather than man made carbon  emissions, are responsible for the earth's warming temperatures. Wow, real scientists working at a prestigious research facility using scientific means concludes that global warming is not caused by anything man is doing.

All of those people who believe that science is a great way to learn, even if it upsets their belief that man is causing global warming, should have been hungry to learn about this new, scientifically derived knowledge. However, I could not find mention of these findings in any main stream media. Al Gore has not embraced this new scientific information. The EPA has not announced it is reconsidering its position its position on global warming, given this new scientific information and data.

In fact, the follow up controversy to these findings is the belief of some of the scientists involved that the Director General of CERN, Rolf-Dieter Heuer, was trying to suppress the findings, wanting "the results to be presented clearly, but not to interpret them."

But isn't that what trained scientists do, develop experiments and interpret results? Is this another case of suppressing information and findings that are not coherent with man made global warming side? If so, isn't this a misuse of science, scientific principles, and scientific integrity?

CERN proves there is great validity to the fact that man made global warming is potentially a myth. Global warming advocates misuse scientific principles and fail to admit when their models are wrong. The U.S. Federal government represses the scientific principle of peer review when it suppresses taxpayer funded work from its own employees.

This completes the first half of our reviewing previous scientific work that proves you can be a global warming doubter and still be a firm believer in science. We will finish up the second half of that review tomorrow and then follow with new evidence that proves global warming doubters are not as evil as Al Gore would have you believe.

I Am A Global Warming Doubter and A Believer In Science - Part 2: Tree Rings In Finland, Mutiny At NASA And More

On February 1, 2012 we put forth a blog post entitled, "I Am A Global Warming Doubter and A Believer In Science." That post can be accessed by clicking:

http://loathemygovernment.blogspot.com/2012/02/i-am-global-warming-doubter-and.html

The first paragraph from that post set up the argument:

One of the favorite slurs of those that ardently believe in global warming is to demean and slander those of us that have our doubts by declaring that heathens like myself must not believe in science. No discussion, no debate, just a gross lumping of us into one uneducated grouping. We must be uneducated slugs if we do not believe what they believe, namely that man made activities are warming the earth's surface which will eventually result in cataclysmic weather and environment disasters.

From that point, the post went on to describe how it really is the believers in man made global warming that are the most anti-science:
  • When an EPA employee developed a scientific research paper that cast doubt on the whole global warming theory, EPA upper management suppressed the publication of the paper. A true, pure scientific approach would have involved the publication of the paper for review by other scientists, i.e. peer review, a standard scientific process. By suppressing the research, the EPA suppressed that scientific process.
  • Global warming science was thrown into doubt when the emails among scientists from a research organization in England, who supported the theory, were published. The emails showed how these scientists discussed changing some of their data and findings to conform to their theories, the exact opposite of what real scientists and science processes do.
  • A similar doubt was also uncovered in internal emails from a New Zealand scientific group,  also supporters of the theory of man made global warming, and who also discussed the potential need to change their data and findings to fit the theory.
  • The post reviewed the words and actions of a Nobel scientist who disputed the claims that there was undeniable evidence of man made global warming.
  • And most damning, the article reviewed the work done by dozens of scientists at the CERN Institute, home of the Large Hadron Collider in Europe. CERN is affiliated with 8,000 scientists at more than 600 universities in 60 countries and is one of the premier physics scientific communities in the world. Their lab tests showed that global warming, while it may be happening, had little to do with humankind’s activities and was driven mostly by actions on the surface of the sun. However, the administration at CERN sought to suppress these findings, certainly an unscientific approach to the problem.

The details from the above abuses of science in the name of proving man made global warming can be found at the link above.

Today’s post reviews some of the science, trends, and findings related to man made global warming that have occurred since early February and how the solution we proposed back in February still is the best approach, by far, to address the issue. In the process, we will reiterate our findings and conclusions that allowing the Federal government to come into this issue in its typical heavy handed incompetent manner, e.g. a massive cap and trade process, is unnecessary, unwieldy, and unlikely to succeed.

So what has happened since our declaration in February regarding our belief in science but our doubts about man made global warming:

1) A new climate study published in the journal, Nature, this past summer seems to debunk previous claims that temperatures in recent decades are in any way historic:
  • The study methodology indicates our climate was much hotter on this planet during Roman times than previously believed:
  • Professor Dr. Jan Esper's research at the Institute of Geography at Johannes Gutenberg University used tree-ring density measurements from ancient pine trees native to Finnish Lapland to produce a climate reconstruction reaching back to 138 BC.
  • According to the article, his researchers have been able to precisely demonstrate that the long-term trend over the past two millennia has been towards climatic cooling.
  • According to Dr. Esper: "We found that previous estimates of historical temperatures during the Roman era and the Middle Ages were too low. Such findings are also significant with regard to climate policy, as they will influence the way today's climate changes are seen in context of historical warm periods."
In simpler terms, as I understand the research, there have been times in our history that the planet was much warmer than now and what was previously believed, warmer temperatures that occurred without the influence of mankind and our industrial society we see today. This proof of warmer temperatures in our history undercuts some of the basic assumptions in the global warming models that have been put forth to prove man made global warming is a unique reality of present times.

Does this study prove conclusively that man made global warming is a myth? Probably not, but it does cast scientific doubt on the theory by using a novel scientific approach and analysis.

2) The latest data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), as reported in several sources including the website Real Science:

http://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2012/09/30/sea-ice-sets-all-time-record-high/

indicate that the Antarctic ice cap has never been larger.

3) On March 28, 2012, a joint letter signed by 49 former NASA engineers, astronauts, and scientists was sent to upper management personnel at NASA, accusing NASA of short circuiting the scientific process by presupposing certain facts and theories that support the man made global warming theory without a sound basis for doing so:

March 28, 2012

The Honorable Charles Bolden, Jr.,
NASA Administrator, NASA Headquarters
Washington, D.C. 20546-0001

Dear Charlie,

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that NASA and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) refrain from including unproven remarks in public releases and websites. We believe the claims by NASA and GISS, that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated, especially when considering thousands of years of empirical data. With hundreds of well-known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership, it is clear that the science is NOT settled.

The unbridled advocacy of CO2 being the major cause of climate change is unbecoming of NASA’s history of making an objective assessment of all available scientific data prior to making decisions or public statements.

As former NASA employees, we feel that NASA’s advocacy of an extreme position, prior to a thorough study of the possible overwhelming impact of natural climate drivers is inappropriate. We request that NASA refrain from including unproven and unsupported remarks in its future releases and websites on this subject. At risk is damage to the exemplary reputation of NASA, NASA’s current or former scientists and employees, and even the reputation of science itself.

For additional information regarding the science behind our concern, we recommend that you contact Harrison Schmitt or Walter Cunningham, or others they can recommend to you.

Thank you for considering this request.

Sincerely,

(Attached signatures)

The attached signatures of the 49 people included their years of NASA service and included veterans with over thirty and forty years of service. Now, none of these 49 appeared to be experts in climate studies. However, most of them appear to be experts in scientific methods, methods that they felt were not being properly used or not being used at all to support the man made global warming theory. They are like myself, believers in science but perhaps doubters of the man made global warming theory.

4) Lets get back to the infamous “cap and trade” legislation proposal that fortunately has not been passed. This legislation was supposed to counteract the impact of man made global warming by setting up this massive bureaucracy of energy credits that was supposed to reduce carbon emissions over time.

The proposed legislation was going to be thousands of pages long, one of the sponsors of the legislation, Congressman Henry Waxman, publicly stated that he had not even read the proposed legislation’s text, and much like every other Federal entity, the bureaucracy that was needed to implement the legislation would have been massive, ineffective, and inefficient. All this for a scientific theory that may not even be true, if you believe the science research above and in the previous post.

And it all may have been unnecessary anyway. According to a an article in Slate.com written by Bjorn Lomborg:
  • In the past year, United States’ carbon emissions, the assumed culprit in man made global warming, dropped to their lowest level in 20 years.
  • The emissions are down 14% from their peak in 2007.
  • The main reason for the drop is not due to government intervention in the marketplace with massive legislation, taxes, and bureaucracy but the simple fact that the growth in natural gas development, mostly via fracking, which has resulted in low cost natural gas availability.
Bravo, scientific technology and know how reducing the carbon footprint AND the cost of energy, what could be better? All without a government bureaucracy to muck things up. And if man made global warming is a reality, this scientific approach will address that need, just in case.

The bottom line is that you can believe in science and scientific research methods and procedures and still be a man made global warming doubter. There is just to much evidence that man made global warming is a myth and overreacting to the claims of its proponents could be a huge waste of time and wealth.

But it could also be true, despite the manipulating of data and research results, adjusting mathematical models to fit the theory and not the science, etc. If it is true, having both sides yell at each other will not resolve anything.

We proposed a solution back in February that would cover all of the bases, be inexpensive relative to cap and trade, and would not matter whether or not man made global warming was a reality since our solution would take that into account. The top line points of our proposal included the following components:
  1. The Federal government would impose an additional  tax of $5 per barrel of oil every year for ten years.
  2. If everyone knew that the cost of gasoline would be about 50% higher in ten years, most of them would act appropriately and purchase a more fuel efficient vehicle the next time they needed a new car.
  3. Those people that did not act rationally and continued to purchase gas guzzlers would have to pay the steep economic price.
  4. This economic approach would reduce most people's carbon footprint, a goal of  man made global warming alarmists.
  5. This approach would also reduce our dependence on foreign oil sources, a good thing to do even if there is no man made global warming.
  6. The twist on this approach is that the Washington political class would never get their hands on this additional tax. The $5 a year additional cost per barrel of gas would be funneled into a Treasury account and used to rebate back to Americans when they file their income taxes.
  7. We all know the political class would squander this pot of money, like they squander all other taxes, so giving it back to citizens would protect it and would insert it back into the economy, helping economic growth.
  8. Best of all, no legislation that is thousands of pages long and is never read by the politicians that sign off on it comes into play. Hence, no cap and trade bureaucracy.
This approach is simple to understand, is revenue and tax neutral to the bad spenders in D.C., rewards good behavior (i.e. people purchase more gas efficient vehicles), addresses the potential global warming issue by reducing the nation's carbon footprint, reduces our dependence on foreign oil sources, and leverages the entire auto industry to get the desired results. The elegance of such an approach is so much better than the blunt force attempt of cap and trade.

A similar approach would be done with the other carbon culprit, coal. This simple, economic based approach was actually put together by two Republican Congressmen but was squashed by Obama, Reid, and Pelosi when they controlled Congress and the Presidency. Since then, they have done nothing to break the gridlock of those supporting and opposing the man made global warming  thesis.

No one knows if man made global warming is a myth or not. But we need to stop yelling at each other since there is plenty of scientific proof and evidence that man made global warming is actually a myth. Stop the yelling and let's work together to find a solution that covers all bases, just in case.

We invite all readers of this blog to visit our new website, "The United States Of Purple," at:

http://www.unitedstatesofpurple.com/

The United States of Purple is a new grass roots approach to filling the office of President of The United States by focusing on the restoration of freedom in the United States, focusing on problem solving skills and results vs. personal political enrichment, and imposing term limits on all future Federal politicians. No more red states, no more blue states, just one United States Of America under the banner of Purple.

The United States Of Purple's website also provides you the formal opportunity to sign a petition to begin the process of implementing a Constitutional amendment to impose fixed term limits on all Federally elected politicians. Only by turning out the existing political class can we have a chance of addressing and finally resolving the major issues of our times.

Our book, "Love My Country, Loathe My Government - Fifty First Steps To Restoring Our Freedom And Destroying The American Political Class" is now available at www.loathemygovernment.com. It is also available online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Please pass our message of freedom onward.
