May, 2020, Part 9, Political Class Insanity: Scamming Food Banks In MInnesota, Cuomo Under Attack In New York, and Michigan Governor Still A Dictator

It is the beginning of another month which means it is time again to review the latest political class insanity from the American political class. Each month it takes us multiple posts to cover the wasteful spending, incompetent government organizations and employees, government programs that usually make a problem worse than resolving it, inane and idiotic politician comments, etc.

To review past posts on this insanity and idiocy, just click on the first few posts in each month listed to the right of this page. After reviewing just a handful of these insanity posts we think you will agree that we are currently being served by the worst set of American politicians ever to hold office in our entire history.

1) Ilhan Omar is a freshman Congresswoman from Minnesota. She has Made a name for herself in many ways, none of them flattering, positive or constructive:
  • She has proven to be a strong enemy of Israel on any number of occasions.
  • There are substantial alleged rumors that she illegally married her brother to go around this country’s immigration laws.
  • She then had an affair with one of her campaign players that eventually led to his divorce.
  • She is under investigation for potential misuse of campaign funds.
Quite the dubious record in less than two years. And now she may have been involved in using the cover story of the coronavirus relief work relative to a food bank to fund her political needs:
  • Omar tweeted out the following tweet: “As Minnesotans struggle with hunger, I am partnering with @MNFoodShare and other local groups that pack and deliver to students and families. Chip in $5 today to power their efforts and keep our communities fed. #GivingTuesdayNow #GiveAtHomeMN”
  • On the surface this appears to be a worthwhile and noble effort.
  • But at the end of the tweet, was the following verbiage: “Donate. step up to feed Minnesota's students and families. secure.actblue.com.”
  • The "Donate" word was large and the whole structure of the tweet led people to the actblue.com website, where it appeared that giving money to Act Blue would benefit the food banks.
  • Act Blue is a Democrtaic Party fundraising website that directs donations to, who else, Ilhan Omar!
  • After the tweet came out, the executive director of Minnesota Food Share tweeted out that her food bank organization that Omar referenced has no idea what Omar is talking about and they had had no conversations about Omar helping them get financial help.
  • In fact, the director stated quite clearly that she had no idea where any of these donations were going.
  • At about this point, given that the food bank had denied getting any help from Omar and the fact that people were pointing out that the original tweet was misleading, funneling attention and donations to the Act Blue website, which has nothing to do with feeding needy American, Omar suddenly deleted her original tweet.
Nothing says “a corrupt American politician” than fundraising off of hungry Americans in the middle of a crisis. Class act Congresswoman.

2) We live in a time of extreme political partisanship where the two major parties would rather have the country fail than have the other party succeed. So when members of the same party go after members of their party I sit up and take notice:
  • As we have previously discussed, the Democratic governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, really screwed up when he forced state nursing homes to accept elderly patients that may have had or currently had the coronavirus.
  • Since the virus is especially dangerous to older folks, Cuomo’s edict may have had a devastating impact on the death rate in New York from the virus.
  • One would expect the Republicans to jump on and take advantage of such a terrible decision.
  • But when Democrats from Cuomo’s own party start calling for investigations into this potential misdeed, you know he really screwed up.
  • There are calls from all over the political spectrum for an independent investigation into why this decision was made and the impact it had, especially in light of the fact that well over 5,000 New Yorkers residing in nursing homes have died from the virus.
  • The Cuomo edict in question specifically ordered that “[nursing homes] are prohibited from requiring a hospitalized resident who is determined medically stable to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.”
  • To cover up this screw up, the New York Times reported that Cuomo’s staff then “quietly inserted a provision on Page 347 of New York’s final, voluminous budget bill” that the newspaper called “unusual legal protections” for nursing home operators.
  • Democrat assemblyman, Ron Kim, went to Twitter to say, "The governor’s flip-flopping policies on nursing homes must be held accountable. First, they tried to keep the virus out by denying access. Then they tell unprepared facilities to take in #COVID19 patients. Now they are back to keeping the virus out again.”
  • Democrat state senator, Gustavo Rivera, also went after Cuomo: “I strongly believe that the Legislature is one of the key entities that should look into this issue, which has devastated so many families across our state. It is imperative to hold public hearings as soon as possible to get to the bottom of what truly happened at our state’s nursing homes as the COVID-19 pandemic developed.”
The bad news is that Cuomo made a massively bad decision in the panic of the crisis and that decision likely resulted in many incremental deaths. The good is that Democrats in the state are putting aside political biases and actually doing the right thing in calling for an independent investigation to find out the ramifications of this bad decision.. Politicians doing the right thing vs. the potlicial thing, refreshing... if only a little too late for those that got sick from this horrid government policy.

3) Nowhere has the arrogance and pompousness of the American political class been more on display within the context of the virus crisis than in the Michigan governor’s office. Michigan is a very large state, with a diverse set of cultures, geography, and needs.

During the crisis, the governor, Gretchen Whitmer, has decided she is in charge of every state resident’s life and has basically shut down the entire state regardless of where anyone lives in the state. Within that shutdown she has put into place some really weird and stupid restrictions including:
  • You cannot buy paint to paint your house unless you buy it from a store that is smaller than 50,000 square feet.
  • You cannot buy garden equipment or seeds for your home unless you buy it from a store that is less than 50,000 square feet.
  • Public works construction can commence but private construction is prohibited, not explaining how it is safe during a pandemic to build things for the government but at the same time unsafe to build things for non-government customers.
So, you can see her credibility and common sense were in need of questioning from the get go, given how dumb some of her edicts were. As time has gone on, there have been some seriously protests in the state capital against some of the restrictions because they are dumb and more importantly, really unnecessary in some parts of the state. The vast majority of the coronavirus infections in Michigan have been inside and nearby Detroit, a major metro area.

Many of the outlying areas of Michigan have had few if any infections. Thus, from a common sense perspective, it made no sense to put forth some draconian restrictions on areas far from Detroit where the virus was basically non-existent. That is what people were protesting, not the need to take action where action was needed, but why take dire economic actions when it was not needed.

Of course, like a good politician Whitmer, was horrified that citizens would exercise their first Amendment rights and protest. She initially called them racists and Nazis without any proof that any of the protesters actually were such bad people. The vast majority, if not all, were just ticked off of how this dictator-like politician had ruined their lives and endangered their families for no good reason.

She recently doubled down on her baseless accusations by claiming the virus was being spread to rural parts of the state by protesters coming to Lansing, the state capital: “We have seen from initial protests here is that we’ve got COVID-19 spreading in rural parts of our state, from which people traveled.”

As often happens with out of control politicians, she provides no research, statistics, of valid medical information that this is true. Much like her Nazi and racists comments, she paints and taints a broad brush of citizens without any basis or facts. In fact, some of those that attended the earlier protests claimed that the Nazi flags were symbol of Whitmer’s dictatorial stance, not a glorification of Nazism.

A true leader would either sit down with her citizens and hash out a workable compromise or provide data, statistics and research to prove her points. She does neither, lashing out at those that dare to have a different opinion than hers and in the process slander those with some very nasty and unfounded accusations.

That will do it for today: a slandering dictator arises in Michigan, Cuomo’s actions were so bad that even his own party peers want an investigation and a Congresswoman runs a scam using the coronavirus and the vital need of food banks as a cover. Despicable behaviors from Michigan to Minnesota to New York.
